Sorry to keep talking about the twins, but is any of the steel being used in this tower?
Not that I am aware of, it's of a lesser grade than that being used in Tower One. Though they could use it with modifications to the chemistry.

I remember when it was decided not to use a central plant like the old complex. As I recall, it had something to do with the Hudson River fish. It also led to the office towers being designed a little higher.
Now that the Hudson has fish again.:D
Yea, the first plant had to cool but 2 towers and some low rise buildings. It would take a huge central plant to cool 4 towers and the Hub and the Memorial. (The new plant cools the Memorial and the Hub.)

Sorry to keep talking about the twins, but is any of the steel being used in this tower?
I'm not sure how much steel was actually recovered and recycled from Ground Zero, but about 7 tons of steel from the Twins was melted down and used for the construction of the USS New York's bow.

Work on the transit hub is going on, you can see the excavation continuing in that last shot, and the Deutche Bank is coming down faster now. The memorial voids are pretty much there.
And somewhere, at the end of this view, the Freedom Tower rises...

They'll have to add extenders on the boom for the mobile cranes so it can lay more steel on the top. It'll keep getting extended until it's 1776' in height. I mean, how else will they raise that spire that goes on top?

True Grit: America's daring ironworkers walk the girders just like their forefathers as they rebuild at Ground Zero
By Mail Foreign Service
26th March 2010
It is a symbol of blue-collar America at its very best.
The daring ironworker strides confidently across a foot-wide steel girder, hundreds of dizzying feet above the ground.
The images echo the famous 1932 picture of the riveters balanced vertiginously above the city streets while they ate the lunch during the building of the Rockefeller Centre.
But these incredible pictures were taken yesterday...

Did they switch steel types (the treated red to the rust brown), or will they just be spraying on the fire insulation later (turning ti whitish)?
JSsocal
Mar 27, 2010, 8:26 AM
The "raw steel," will get spray-on fire proofing, while the bright red will not. The paint itself is the fire proofing, and the reason it isn't being coated like the rest of the steel is because the sleeves for the columns would be too thick otherwise.

hello everybody i just visited freedom tower aka tower 1v2 yesterday and i was talking to one of the enginiers there and they told me why there is the difference of the two typs of steel. one: is the strenght meaning the base steel is higher strenght then the office floors cause the base steel would have to carry a bigger load. two: the paint as some of you say is practlically the fire proffing.
also the the big red on the west side of the tower will be taken down very soon i was told.
i must say that the building is getteing pretty damn tall now , and yes its true by december it will be about 52 floors high.

Anybody ever figure out if they're going to keep laying the top floor of the two floor additions first?
Delaying the laying and pouring of the odd number floors a couple of weeks could let them use two completely different crews for that job and speed up the process, letting them achieve the famous "one a week" rate.
Zensteeldude
Mar 29, 2010, 9:30 PM
The reason for placing decking on the 22nd floor before the 21st is clear now, they wanted to get rid of the 16000 and get it moved to the Hub construction. (it has to do with safty rules and how high they can go without decking)
PS: the floor a week thing has to do with steel erection, not the actual pouring of the floor slabs.
Great pics NYGuy, I'm going to go study them at my leisure.

I have been following the progress and must say it is heartwarming to see that finally downtown is being reclaimed by New Yorkers...at ground level...and in the sky. Despite the nonsense and incompetance of the different agencies involved, the people of the city are still pulling for it, the workers cant wait to get this juggernaut skyward, and the forumers havent lost their enthusiasm in here. Dubai can throw up a hundred glass and steel monuments to themselves, but New York is still the Worlds city.
Cant wait to see the view from the top of this tower...

New skyscraper rises from site of 9/11
By Ryan Parry 31/03/2010
It Will be a beacon of hope to millions of people around the world.
Almost nine years after New York's Twin Towers were wiped out in the 9/11 terror attacks the 105-storey Freedom Tower is rapidly rising from the rubble.
"Construction has really picked up pace in the last six months," says Steve Coleman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey who are developing the 16 acre site after years of wrangling over money and design. "We expect to be building on average a floor a week. In all we will have 105 floors of which 69 are dedicated to offices.
"By the end of this year, if everything goes to plan, we will have reached the 60th floor or around 600ft."
And by mid 2011 the gleaming new skyscraper should already be rivalling New York's 1,454ft Empire State building.

I'd guess so the big red crane can work in the area. Looks like the limit of what that crane can do is being reached.

Photos taken today by Sal Schiano over at WNY.
The 18000 has one lift left. Yes, they left out that steel to clear the jib of the 18000.

There's so much construction going on in the area, and Manhattan in general. People will pay a little more attention when these towers start to tower above every other buildng in the area though, if only in a quick glance up to see the new WTC taking shape. But in general, yeah people don't pay attention to construction if nothings falling...:)

If you mean towers 2 and 3, that's over in highrise proposals.

Zen, I 've got a question for you.
Just what in the hell is a sliding crane that is mentioned as helping out with the 1 WTC construction after the departure of the 16000 and 18000?
I keep on thinking of something like a gantry crane, but that makes no sense.

I think "climbing crane" got changed to "sliding crane" between the folks that know such things and the folks that do the press releases. The latest intelligence I have is that there well be a climbing crane installed somewhere on the north side. When, I don't know.
I asked a friend of mine if Federated Equipment had an external climbing crane smiler to there internal one and he said he had not herd of any but would ask.

I have just noticed this picture on another thread, it's a skyscraper under construction in the city of Incheon, its design is really close to 1WTC...
(Sorry if it has been already posted here)
Thanks everyone for all the great updates!!

Wow, that tower is very close to Tower One. Judging from the scale based on the tower crane it is about 2/3rds the height, and I doubt it has the base like Tower One.
Nice find, Paris-New York City.

We discussed this previously, but it only looks like 1WTC from this angle. This tower actually comes to a triangular point (on the side we can't see). So I guess it's half like 1WTC? or maybe 75%? Depends on your math.
