Why are people saying towers 2 and 3 are going to be scrapped, and the twins are going to be rebuilt, whats going On?

Even if they scrapped the actual towers in buildings 2 & 3 they are planning on building them up through the lobby and retail floors as 'stump buildings', however that's only until they get the financing to actually build the full thing up.

The site is far too complex to build anything other then what the current plans are showing...it's all too interconnected underground with the vehicle security center and the transportation hub.

To make a long story short (too late!), as soon as you were able to see any bits of the new tower 1 peeking up out of the ground it was too late to build anything else really.

No Twin Towers. They aren't coming back unless if someone builds them somewhere else.

watching people slide down the slope

right off the edge!

but yeah, an outdoor observation deck would be cool, but indoor is completely fine for me. Besides, both Rockefeller and Empire state have outdoor areas.

So basically you are saying that there will only be one skyscraper at the site, that being One World Trade Center Tower, and towers 2,3 will just be small buildings? I am confused. lol

Not exactly.

Until they get the money to pay for the full towers they plan on just building the stumps of 2 & 3 (lobby and retail levels). However when the money is in place they will build towers 2 & 3.

Marshall, Marshall, Marshall...sigh. There are going four new towers. Look at ANY rendering of the new WTC and count them. There's your answer.

They will ALL be built soon. This whole holding-off-until-there's-financing is merely a pause, not a stop. There is no way in hell that they won't all get built, one way or the other. If a disaster occurs and Silverstien cannot secure financing for towers 2 and 3 for some reason, politicians and governments will likely step in to finish this off. It just simply could not remain incomplete.

uaarkson
Sep 3, 2011, 12:46 AM
Yep. Silverstein is legally obligated to build those towers. One way or another, they'll get built.

Barring another terrorist attack, or a double dip recession (which the U.S. will likely skirt by), there will be anchor tenants for these towers within the net year.

The best location for an outdoor observation deck might be on top of Tower 3, think about it... WTC 1 has the spire and the lights taking up space, so no room for too many people, plus safety concerns. Tower 2 has no roof in the conventional sense and Tower 4 is the shortest of the bunch. Tower 3 would be perfect, central to the entire World Trade Center complex, surrounded by all the other buildings, you would truly feel a part of the whole experience. This could be an alternative addition to the indoor observation deck in Tower 1. Now if they just build Tower 3 to it's full planned height.

i like that idea:tup:...........kinda like the best view in midtown is at Top of the Rock, NOT the ESB

hunser
Sep 3, 2011, 12:54 PM
^^ right, because from the top of the rock you can actually see the ESB. same goes for 3WTC where you can see marvels as 1 and 2WTC. :) btw great pics everyone, keep them coming.

I guess they COULD have had an outdoor observation deck on 2 WTC, and it would have been interesting watching people slide down the slope

That would be so much fun haha, they should build a slide on top of tower 2. Kind of like the ride on the stratosphoere tower in vegas. :haha:

right, but the dilemma with an outdoor observation deck on 3WTC, is that the roof fins would be way too high for people to see anything! :haha:

imo, 2wtc, and 4wtc are more ideal...

btw: are people allowed to go on that big setback on 4wtc!?! aside from it being a setback, is there any use to it?... THAT would be a great view of the WTC site!

Well, clearly this building isn't actually going to be 1,776' tall.
Main Lobby is at Elv. 311'2
North Entrance is at 307'10"
Beacon is at 2087'2, 1776' above main lobby floor, but 1779'4 above north entrance.
PLUS, if you look at the top of the diagram, there's an 8' section above the beacon, making it 1787'4" tall.

1787 is actually a much better number, when you think about it. 1776 was when we declared war on a country that's now an ally. How the hell is that really relevant to this building? 1787, on the other hand, was the year the US Constitution was written and adopted. Much more relevant.

what datum is the project working off of for lobby to be at elevation +311'-2" and spire to be at +2087'-2"? clearly not the manhattan datum...

update/edit:
a few minutes on google and i've answered my own question...
http://www.pobonline.com/Articles/Cover_Story/fc71be768d0f6010VgnVCM100000f932a8c0
"Most of the work in New York City, however, is tied to a specific borough datum. In Manhattan for example, the Manhattan vertical datum is 2.75' above mean sea level at Sandy Hook. Transit Authority vertical datum is 100.1' above the Manhattan vertical datum. Similarly, the Port Authority vertical datum is 297.347' above NGVD 29. The Transit Authority and Port Authority, with tunnels well below sea level, use these datums so engineers and surveyors can work in positive numbers."

Funny thing is there are plans for WTC 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 and 7 has already been built. But as far as I know there is no current plan for any building to be built as WTC 6.

On topic what is going to be the official height on 9/11 this year? I know they've passed their goal of 1,000 ft, but I'm interested to know how high they've actually gotten for the anniversary.

WTC 7 is called "7" in honor of the original 7 WTC that was destroyed by the attacks. There will only be a total of 6 towers... on Fox News last night Shepard Smith interviewed Silverstein, and Silverstein specifically referred to SIX towers he planned to finish as "jewels" of quality design.

By the way, I hope that ridiculous "window box" on the belly of of the rendition of 5 WTC never happens...

Another interesting tidbit about 1 WTC...The views from the indoor observation deck when finished will surely be amazing, I believe during Discovery Channel's "Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero" they mentioned that the windows on the floors will be expansive and offer wide angle views, unlike in the old Twin Towers, which had very narrowly-spaced windows, which supposedly to add a sense of security due to Yamasaki's fear of heights. Each window in the old Towers were only shoulder-length in width. New 1 World Trade will have much wider views, I believe.

(1) They're probably preparing for the cladding of the base which (2) is supposed to start sometime early next year, at around the same time (3) when 1 WTC is supposed to top out (quarter 1 of 2012).

I hope that answers your questions.

Nice Otie.
I don't think those floor connections can be more than 50 times as strong as in the original towers.

Hi all.

what datum is the project working off of for lobby to be at elevation +311'-2" and spire to be at +2087'-2"? clearly not the manhattan datum...

update/edit:
a few minutes on google and i've answered my own question...
http://www.pobonline.com/Articles/Cover_Story/fc71be768d0f6010VgnVCM100000f932a8c0

Hi Jay.

That article is worded incorrectly.
The port authority vertical datum, elevation 0 is 297.37 feet below NGVD 1929. Similarly the transit VD is 100 feet below the Manhattan VD. That is how their deep tunnels stay in positive numbers.

^Yep, though to be clear, the spire isn't "at +2087'-2". The beacon is at that height. The spire terminates 8' higher than that, per the diagram.

No, I don't! A spire is the pinnacle of a building with nothing to come above it. Big difference. I consider a buildings actual height when a majority of the columns have been placed not 1. As I said before just my opinion.

Seeing as the Western construction elevators were only ever going as high as the 40th floor anyway, why aren't they cladding the track above it? They have left a gap for no discernible reason.

Thanks Otie, very logical... I should have thought of that... They talked about the weather seal and the hockey stick they use to adjust it during installation of the panels on the Discovery special: The Rising.

And I am hoping Mike O'Riley and his partner can get at least one column up before 9/11, so it hits 1000 feet as they so desperately wanted.

The tower will never see a 7 point quake. It's much stiffer than quake zone towers, so there's not much point in a damper.

The tower will never see a 7 point quake. It's much stiffer than quake zone towers, so there's not much point in a damper.

Why is there one in the Citicorp Bldg?

man, i love downtown. the street layout, the architecture, it looks and feels bigger than it is. i like midtown as well, but the grid doesnt allow building to be noticed quite as well; on top of that, i dont like knowing where i am all the time, so with midtown there is very little mystery, though large and expansive wich allows more room for expression. downtown on the other hand has nooks and crannies that even natives might not know about, alot a vantege points. in other words, downtown is more of a signiture with elegant building, whereas midtown is more about economic dynamics...one think that stands out though is battery park city, im not sure how i feel about it, because the architecture doesnt seem good enough, the heights of the residential towers could be taller, particularly because of where theyre located, the demand for residences in that area is probably enormous....

The Citicorp building is barely strong enough to stand up in a stiff breeze. It wasn't even that strong because of a major contractor screwup until welded a bunch of joints.
You could pick up lower Manhattan with WTC1.
Archimedes might finally have his lever. Now he just needs a place to stand.

I hope they do retire that hideous term for good. "ground zero" evokes way too much tragedy and loss. Time to retire it for good!

I fully agree here, I mentioned it several times before that people should finally stop using the term Ground Zero. There's no hole anymore, heck we already got a 1000 feet scraper soaring into the sky. From now on, let's just call the whole thing by its name: the WTC site. :)

Silverstein Confident WTC Site Has New Lease On Life
By: NY1 News

http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/146573/silverstein-confident-wtc-site-has-new-lease-on-life

While new buildings rise at the World Trade Center, leaseholder Larry Silverstein says he has no doubt those buildings will soon be fully occupied.
Speaking on last night's "Inside City Hall", Silverstein noted that after the terror attacks, a lot of people thought new skyscrapers at the site would never attract enough businesses to be successful.

But now that tower 7 is fully leased, Silverstein is confident the other buildings will attract similar interest.

He says he's in negotiations with several large firms to lease space in the towers.

"There was a massive exodus from Lower Manhattan at that moment in time. As I watched this I said to myself, 'We've gotta stop this, and the only way to stop this is to start rebuilding,'" Silverstein said.

Later this morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will join Silverstein, Port Authority executive director Chris Ward, and other officials to give a progress report on the rebuilding efforts.

I'm pretty sure that when people need the semantics police to tell them what they can call a place they'll let them know.

Thanks for that link Carlos. It was worth watching.

Just a friendly reminder, don't forget NOVA's "Engineering Ground Zero" airs tonight Sept 7th at 9pm et on PBS(see preview above) looks like a cool show. NOVA's cameras have been following the rebuilding for years, and the show seems to focus a lot on One WTC. I for one am excited to watch them raise that spire on top of the tower once the floors are finished, that will be a sight to behold!
