Also, a fun little fact, because it sits on higher ground the 102nd Floor observatory in the Empire State Building will actually remain the highest publicly accessible point in the city.
I looked it up. The ESB is 51' above sea level. The 102nd floor is at 1224' above that. Do you know what both floors of observation at 1 WTC will be?
Floors 100 & 101 are 1551' 2" and 1565' 4" above PANYNJ datum. The zero elevation is located 300' below mean high tide at Battery Park Point. So if you wanna know the elevation starting from sea level, substract 300':
100: 1251' 2"
101: 1265' 4"

[QUOTE=PUSSY WILLOW;5409678]One crane is higher at 1WTC! that means more steel columns soon! also the cranes at 4 WTC are dominating the Woolworth Building!!! pretty soon it will be dwarfed by it!
Yes it does! They are finishing getting everything bolted up on 79 & 80 & raising the Subway restaurant...within a day or 2 there should be more steel erected.

^^^Not sure what you're talking about, they're exactly the same. The only difference is that seven's glass is broken up by metal frames between floors, spacing the pieces out, but otherwise the distortion and color are just the same.

Not exactly, while you are correct that Tower 7's mullions do create a different effect then that of the uniformed facade of Tower 1, the two towers do in fact have a slight discoloration. It is not the same when measured on the color pallet. And as for distortion Tower 1's glass is rolled to about 3/4 of an inch when it was made which i believe differs for the glass on Tower 7.

So now the obs. deck will not even be as high as the ESB? I don't know if i'd call that a fun little fact. I'd call it a disturbing little fact. At this rate, they would be better off just putting an outdoor observation deck on 2 WTC and forget about 1 WTC. That's just downright shameful. :hell:

The tower will never see a 7 point quake. It's much stiffer than quake zone towers, so there's not much point in a damper.

According to the Discovery special, the glass on 1 WTC is not the typical reflective glass used in many buildings, but is instead much more transparent due to its manufacturing process.

No, because the pace of construction of any building is always affected by unpredictable interruptions such as 5 snowstorms, a hurricane, a freak rainstorm, a cement strike, and whatever other hurdles this building will encounter. If we have a mild winter with little weather events, then it could get done rather early. If not, this could stretch into the early spring. And remember, the spire isn't considered a part of the "topping out". That's simply for the parapet.

The Port Authority website states the following "Upon completion, One World Trade Center's program will include 3 million square feet of office space on 71 office floors, a grand public lobby graced with a 50-foot ceilings, an observation deck 1,241' 8" above ground, a wide array of shopping opportunities and ample parking." So not sure if the Deck will indeed be the highest in the city or not, but thats what their site states. :)

The bottom was originally going to be blanketed in a special prismatic glass. Turns out the glass didn't pass shattering tests, so they scrapped it. I think they're still looking for an alternative.

Heh. My info said ~60, but I didn't research it all that closely. But yes, the 102nd is 1224'2.5" from the street. Additional numbers: the 107th floor observation deck in the south tower was 1308'4" above the sea, and 1298'4" above Liberty St.
So, to clarify, the 1 WTC Observation Deck will be higher than the Empire State Building, or not?
It will not be higher since the Empire State Building is on higher ground than the WTC. You will be, ever so slightly, looking down at the people in Lower Manhattan.

Most people don't even bother to go up to the upper observation deck of the ESB (time and cost) but I think its worth it. The old observation deck at the WTC was publicly given as 1,277 ft, but back then the old tower heights were given as 1,350 ft. I think the deck here will do great business, sucking up from the tourists below.

One W.T.C.’s many meanings, some visible and some not
September 9, 2011
BY Aline Reynolds
Whether riding the Staten Island ferry to Manhattan or driving into the city on the Long Island Expressway, one can spot a towering building under construction that, once completed, will rise above all other skyscrapers that make up the skyline.
The latest design of One W.T.C., unveiled in 2005, illustrates a 102-story skyscraper with a cubic-shaped base, tapering triangular forms on its middle and upper façade and mammoth glass panels that will have a kaleidoscopic effect. The building’s observation deck will have three levels approximately 1,200 feet high that will offer expansive views of the Tri-state area.
The building will have a swirling, steel spire that will flash the letter “N” for New York, which will be visible all the way from the Tappen Zee Bridge northward, and southward to Sandy Hook, N.J. The metal-and-glass parapet that will encircle the top of the tower will be composed of two portions, one measuring 1362 and the other 1368 feet — a tribute to the heights of the Twin Towers.
The prismatic glass panels S.O.M. chose to enshroud the building’s approximately 200-foot-high base weren’t manufacturable on such a large scale. The base’s new redesign, Lewis said, will be unveiled in the coming months.

"Three levels approximately" Wish the author wrote with more precission, if the word approximately wasn't there I would assume the 102 fl will be destined for the Observation decks.

Not really, we can only guess based on the start and end date of the spire construction, which we don't have precisely.

I dunno if anyone's noticed this but another reason the 1,007 foot mark is significant is as follows. The nose of Flight 175 struck the South Tower on the 81st floor. This is also the floor where the collapse began, according to the official NIST report. I don't know EXACTLY how many feet above ground this was, but coming up with a rough guess (using the formula (81/110)*1,362) gives a height of 1,003 feet. So the current height of 1WTC is more or less right around the point where the South Tower was struck and where its collapse began.

probably Citigroup or 599 Lexington. All the other buildings are relatively shorter than the Chrysler and would make the camera look up during the picture.
BTW i've been meaning to scan and post the special 80 page addition from the Post and and Daily News from 9/11 2011. The special 80 pg addition from the Post has a view of the Twins from the 70's shining and they look a billion times better than the new 1 WTC. But it's a great building in it's own right.

It would actually be more symbolic if 2 World Trade Center reached that height. The current new 2 World Trade Center bears the name of the South Tower before 9/11.

The source of those pics (http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/), the Charles W. Cushman Collection at Indiana University, is an amazing resource.
The old observation deck at the WTC was publicly given as 1,277 ft, but back then the old tower heights were given as 1,350 ft. I think the deck here will do great business, sucking up from the tourists below.
Not sure where the 1,277 figure comes from, mine comes from tower blueprints. But I agree that this will be crazy packed for a long time after it opens and a major destination long after.

I just looked at the updated diagram that Otie posted that shows the beacon at 1,776' and the total structure height to the top of the lightning rod to be 1,792'. I then looked online at an aviation chart. It has the 1 WTC under construction with an total structure height of 1,806' above sea level and 1,792' above ground.
The ESB is listed as 1,454' above ground and 1,505' above sea level.

Just FYI. The 1,454' ESB Total and the 1,792' WTC total is always to the top of the lightning rod mounted on the top of the antenna for FAA obstruction listings.
