To be exact, it's 36.8 miles away. Pretty close to 40. I was zoomed in over 20x also

I'm sorry...but I didn't mean to sound like I was busting your chops or anything. I apologize if it sounded that way. But, the miles you're quoting now...are they road miles?? If you look at a map...and do air miles..it's less than 25 away. If you drove it, it can easily exceed 35 miles because of all the turns and whatnot. Either way....please keep up the excellent work. You're one hellava photographer. Thanks for all you do here..and keeping guys like me glued to the screen with the great photos. :)

Words cannot express how absolutely beautiful the above photo is. The orange sky reflecting on the towers is breathtaking. The best thing about the glass design of 1WTC is it reflects the light around it, meaning it changes color with the sky throughout the day. Thank you for this contribution, NY Guy!

The Twin Towers used to do the same thing. Their steel would change color through the day. That was why Philippe Petit mentioned that the buildings were alive, and I guess One World Trade Center is coming to life now too.

I think you mean their aluminum skin, not their steel. And I agree. Back when I went to school just north of the towers, I loved looking up at the North Tower from a classroom window as its facade shimmered in the afternoon sun. It was really a sight to behold.

Steel and aluminum don't change color (unless dirty and heated of course). Steel and aluminum do however reflect light. That's what steel on every building does. When it was really sunny the Twins looked shiny, when it was cloudy the Twins looked grey. The "Four" steel spandrels on this buildings four sides do the same thing.

New World Trade Center skyscraper becomes world's most expensive new office tower

NEW YORK – The price tag for One World Trade Center, the signature skyscraper under construction at Ground Zero in New York, has risen to more than $3.8 billion, making it by far the world's most expensive new office tower, according to people familiar with the matter.
The new figure, up $700 million from the latest public estimate, marks another twist in the rebuilding of the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The process has been marked by thorny political challenges and ever-lengthening construction delays.

...By comparison, other-high profile buildings around the world have been far less expensive. The developer of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, in Dubai, has put its cost at $1.5 billion.

I guess "shorter" BILLION dollar skyscrapers aren't scarce in the U.S. Carnegie 57 is a billion and so is the Bank of America Tower. I think 432 Park will also cost a BILLION. For 1WTC it's just the necessary (for some unnecessary) safety features and extra building materials that have made the price skyrocket. It shouldn't be surprising. Look at the price for the Transportation Hub, a couple of feet away.

New World Trade Center skyscraper becomes world's most expensive new office tower

That's because other skyscrapers don't have the extensive safety features and extra building material 1WTC has, and also because the construction of the tower has been subjected to much more conflict and friction than any other tower.

Well, the original wasn't made to sustain substantial commercial conditions. This being said, unless it would be built as a monument structure like the Statue of Liberty, it would be hundreds of millions more. This considers how much it is to wire it, give it adequate light and heat it without taking away from it's classic look. It would most likely be used for commercial purposes if it was rebuilt, considering that nowadays, people consider economic boom. In the long run, it's probably over a billion, and it will be a waste, IMO. I'd go more into detail, but i'm wayyyyy off topic, and don't want to anger people, sorry about that. :( Anyways, 1 wtc would still probably cost more.

I never said it wasn't possible to build a modern pyramid; I said it would be costly, maybe about half as 1 wtc is, to build a exact commercial replica of the Pyramid of Giza, without messing up the design.
Aside from the point, does anyone know how high the glass is at 1 wtc?

The mast counts too you people. One World Trade Center is 1,776 feet tall. The tallest building in North America.

I think once its built, everyone will see why the mast counts towards height

As One World Trade Center soars, so do its costs

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/31/10279406-as-one-world-trade-center-soars-so-do-its-costs

One World Trade Center, the central skyscraper at Ground Zero, stands under construction on January 30, 2012 in New York City.

By Marisa Taylor

At 10 years in the making, One World Trade Center, the skyscraper that’s being constructed at New York City’s Ground Zero, is now the most expensive new office tower in the world, with new estimates of its price tag hitting $3.8 billion, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is managing the construction effort, is expected to release new estimates this week projecting $700 million in additional costs related to higher-than-anticipated construction costs and public leasing expenses, reported the WSJ. The additional expenses make it “by far the world's most expensive new office tower, according to people familiar with the matter,” the Journal said.

“Of the $700 million in additional costs, about $350 million comes from costs associated with leasing such as money given to tenants to build out their offices and commissions for brokers, the people said. That figure assumes the building would be nearly fully occupied. Other increases come from unexpected construction costs, financing costs, fees to consultants and the Durst Organization, and other contingencies,” the WSJ reports.

The Journal reports that the building was originally slated to cost $2 billion, but additional security costs associated with the 1,776-foot height of the building have upped the ante, bringing the estimate to $3.1 billion in 2008.

And since its inception, the construction of One World Trade Center has been marked by delays and political infighting that have been reflected in controversial toll hikes for area residents and reduced spending on other transportation projects. The office tower is expected to be completed in 2013.

The Port Authority is currently embroiled in a lawsuit investigating the toll hikes, which it had said were necessary to fund One World Trade Center, but papers it filed in conjunction with the lawsuit revealed that the higher tolls were actually going to be used for unrelated transportation projects.

And though One World Trade Center was never intended to turn a profit, new Port Authority executive director Patrick Foye made a speech last week advocating for its construction to pick up the pace, according to the WSJ. “I believe the agency must refocus on its core mission,” he said.

So how many feet tall does the Chrysler building look to you? At what point does it stop registering? Or how about the ESB--does its top roof not register to your eyes, being as narrow as much of 1WTC's spire?

World Trade Center design flaw could cost millions

Jan 31, 2012

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Tuesday the loading dock under One World Trade Center won't be finished in time for tenants to move their equipment into the 104-story tower. So it's building five temporary loading bays above ground.

The problem is due to a temporary station that was built for the Port Authority Trans Hudson subway. That station can't be dismantled to make way for underground freight areas until crews finish the permanent station.

"Several years there was a design miss," said Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority, "Should it have been caught? The answer is, probably."

Hi, guys :) New poster here -- but I have been lurking since before Christmas. I just have to say, Carlos, I LOVE the [daily] pictures you post. They are so cool to see!

I went to NYC for a week back in September and was there during the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and then got to visit the new 9/11 Memorial twice. I remember the first time I got off the E train at WTC, walked up to street level and the first thing I saw was 1 WTC. So breathtakingly huge and beautiful. :) I plan on a long weekend trip back to NYC sometime this spring, hopefully when they have started to finish topping out. So exciting to see history in the making!
