It looks like more perimeter columns have gone up today - anyone know for sure? Looks like it on the WTC Progress webcam. :) So exciting! Making me even more excited for my upcoming visit. :D

Yes, more perimeter columns have been put up today. I'm sure Carlos will have some great pics later of the progress.

Hello folks! I thought I should introduce myself here in the forum to all you skyscraper fanatics! My name is Jesse and I live in Miami! But you New Yorkers laugh at our small 400 ft skyscrapers, hehe! :haha:

I'm new here as a member, but I've been following for almost a month now! :D

I'm very psyched about this project! :)

It's just so hard to believe:) And I've been curious about two things: As soon as the roof tops out, will they immediately begin construction on the communications ring/mast? And will this mast be thicker than the average spire?

Well its not like at the stroke of midnight at April 1 they'll just top out. At least possibly by the end of April. Theres only about 4-5 jumps left so maybe the mid to end of April

^ I don't see why they should, although it would be nice. The ESB does the lights. The old Twins never did anything like that. But the new WTC will definitely be more lit than the old.

I don't see why not. The steel is higher so it will grow taller faster. But if not early April than definitely late May-early June.

Feb 8, 2012, 11:49 PM
I'm happy to see new steel! Biggest columns so far looks like cause of mechanical floors, but anyway the PA released a statement today. It said that the reason of One Wtc's small delay was of two reasons, one being that it was cause of harsh winter weather .And two because, as some of you may have all ready seen, of a design flaw with the tenants loading dock under the tower. They also said the building is still on schedule and WILL top out this spring in either April or May!

I'll be in New York Mid May, really hoping to see the building topped by then, when I was there in early January I was already blown away by how much presence this building had, I can only imagine once they throw on a couple hundred more feet and a spire!

WOW!!!? Seriously!? That's so disappointing :( Why is it taking them so long?

There is no indication that anything he said is true. There is no reason, outside of weather, that their current pace will not continue. These are mechanical floors if I'm not mistaken, so they'll take a little bit longer than office floors, but again there's no indication that their current pace will slow.

Not to rain or your parade or anything but I just have the feeling that it's going to take another 2 months to raise steel again on One World Trade Center, I hope that doesn't happen again I really want this tower finished ASAP.

Why would you say that..? Let's not make negative assumptions without any proof :sly:

They remind me of my youth when I was young and I used to look out the window of my parent's Chinatown apartment and see the Twin Towers with the setting sun, and it would look just like those images you posted Carlos, but now new towers are being built, and they are completely different from the Twins, and I am proud something is being built to fill the void and to give the lights that the Twin Towers used to do. Slowly but surely your picture confirms that these new buildings will take over the job of the Twin Towers pretty well.

WTC agency vows cost cuts as project price soars
By Joan Gralla

The lead agency rebuilding the World Trade Center on Thursday sought to counter criticism about the project's long delays and cost overruns, stressing the need for spending cuts after the project's price tag ballooned by billions of dollars.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns the 16-acre (6.5 hectare) World Trade Center site. A preliminary audit of the authority's operations and the World Trade Center costs released Tuesday raised the cost of rebuilding to $14.8 billion, up from 2008's $11 billion estimate.

"That report is not going to go on the shelf and gather dust," Port Authority Chairman David Samson told reporters.

He has directed the agency's senior management to soon recommend ways to slice the soaring cost of its workforce.

Overtime, unused vacation days and rewards designed to keep workers from leaving the authority have helped raise total compensation by 19 percent to $749 million in the past five years, the audit summary said.

The World Trade Center's redevelopment has stalled for years due to clashes over insurance proceeds, security concerns and design problems. The Port Authority has had seven executive directors since 2001, the officials said. The audit called the authority a "challenged and dysfunctional organization" with "a lack of consistent leadership."

"The last 10 years this agency has gone through have been completely destabilizing," said Scott Rechler, vice chairman of the Port Authority. "There's a new team in town."

The Port Authority will have to spend an extra $1.6 billion on the World Trade Center rebuilding if it fails to recover cost overruns for delayed projects such as the National September 11 Memorial and Museum. That would raise the cost of the World Trade Center complex to $16.4 billion.

"The expectation is that we will be recovering a large portion of those costs," Rechler said.

Port Authority officials said the project's 2008 price estimates should have been $1 billion higher because they left out expenses, such as tenant improvements for One World Trade Center, the tallest building on the site.

An extra $500 million was spent switching the order in which projects - the transit hub, four skyscrapers, and an underground parking garage - will be built so the memorial to the 3,000 people who died on September 11, 2001 would be finished in time for the tenth anniversary.

Even with that, the museum's opening has been delayed from September 11, 2012 due to a clash over how much it will cost.

The governors of New York and New Jersey share control of the Port Authority and the two states have had a total of nine governors since the air attacks. Each time a new governor is elected, progress tends to slow because the newcomer has to be brought up to speed on the complicated construction project.

A second study of the authority's capital planning and the way it prioritizes projects is being conducted by financial advisory firm Rothschild Inc and is due in June. This study is expected to recommend "financing alternatives," the officials said, including more reliance on the private sector.

More news on cost overruns from Crains

An audit this week branded the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey as dysfunctional and warned that $3.8 billion in new World Trade Center costs loom. But the picture may not be a bad as it seems. A closer reading of the audit shows that the increase is largely due to newly budgeted commercial leasing expenses that the agency could recover, according to Crain's Insider.
The Port's remaining costs to complete the $14.8 billion World Trade Center project are expected to be $7.7 billion, up $1.7 billion since 2008. But the audit noted that the increase “was not primarily driven by cost growth in the original scope of the WTC program.”
Instead, while some of the additional expenses are linked to infrastructure cost overruns, nearly $1 billion stems from funds recently budgeted to lease 1 World Trade Center (about $700 million) and the site's retail space ($275 million).
“Why would you put the full billion in the Port Authority's costs?” asked one former employee, noting that the Port should be able to lease the space and make money in the process.
Port Authority Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Scott Rechler said the audit simply made public the project's total cost to allow the agency to properly allocate resources.

It's all about how tall a floor is. The twins had 12' office floors. Tower 1 here today has 13' 4'' office floors with many even taller floors. It will be 1,240' to floor 100 even though that floor is 81 floors up it is about equal in elevation to floor 100 in some other tall buildings. I think they skip floor count to make up for the equivalent of what other tall buildings have at that same elevation. The ESB is 1,224' to floor 102 not even a 12' average floor height with its tall lobby included. They could have put 12' floors on top of the 60' lobby at 1WTC and had a 107 floor building. It's all in the Floor height. The 1st 6 floors here cover the 1st 187 feet above the lobby. I spoke with a steel worker at the site last night and he also told me the column splices rise to 1,188' above the lobby.

It makes more sense if you start from the lowest basement level, not the lobby. Then the floor numbers from 20 on up almost exactly match 13'4" per floor.

Carlos, what's the URL link for the live earthcam tower 1 thing? I can only find the earthcam on the port authority website, and it's a pretty bad vantage point.

Another thing people forget is that this tower caps off a development that will complete the world's greatest skyline. It's tall enough for this purpose. By the end of this decade, no other city will come close.
