How tall does everyone think this will be November of 2010 how much progress will towers 2 3 and 4 have
Lets see....by adding the numbers, we can conclude this:

-1WTC is at approximately 125-130 feet with the new core steel. They probably won't finish the base until the start of next year, given the weather is on our side.

-The first office floor is at level 20, the floors will rise each week according to the PA's floor-a-week schedule, so by the end of 2010 we should have 52 floors(because of course, there are 52 weeks in a year).

-Going into 2011: There are 70 office floors in the entire building, with only 18 left to go(18 weeks in translation), then there are a series of mechanical floors. Then comes the roof, and all of its utilities, including the massive three-story communications ring, and the even larger 408 foot-high spire, which will probably be lifted into place by one of the tower cranes, or jacked up(that's a better alternative, since the tower cranes are centered within the core, unlike the tower's predecessor, which had four cranes positioned in the edges of it's rectangular core). The tower's roof height should top out in May of 2011, and the spire should be erected a few months after that. But it looks like everything's on schedule.

-Tower 4 should have topped out at the same time or in early 2012, and as for towers 2 and 3....well since their foundations tie into Calatrava's transit hub, the PA has to build, finance, or do whatever the hell it takes to get these towers moving. Hopefully they'll be more than halfway there by the time Tower 4 tops out in 2011.

According to the PA Schedule, One World Trade's rooftop will top out Fall 2011 so we'll see what happens.

That means we're gonna score about a floor per week? That seems to be just a bit faster than how fast the tower is growing today, which is what you'd expect because the base has a lot more to it than the ordinary office floors will.

However, I'm surprised they can get the whole tower up in 2 years but that it will take 2 more years just to open it after that point. That means that the interior walls and carpeting, etc take as long to install as the whole rest of the tower?

It looks like they'll top out at almost exactly the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I don't know if that's a correlation you'd want to intentionally make or a correlation you'd want to intentionally avoid.

From seeing past high-rises go up, once the exterior cladding is up, work on the inside of that floor will begin. So when the skeleton of say the 50th floor is done and they are moving up, the bottom floors will have been started on the interior work.

Still figuring the size of the tower, I would say about a year extra for the finishing touches depending on how fast they can do the insides.

What huh? They've already put quite a bit of steel up this morning. What do you mean by something? If you mean a milestone like glass starting, no, we're 6 months+ from that. If you mean the next floor about the east side, I suspect the tower will pull to even all the way around before it goes higher, but they have been adding to the core on the east side about the 4th floor.

http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/milestones.html

A detailed look at the PA's schedule for the Freedom Towers keeps with a 2011 topping out, with completion of the curtain wall around the third quarter of 2012 (beginning summer 2010). The building will be complete by the end of 2013.

A little more on next quarter (winter) milestones...
http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/pdf/3Q2009_Report.pdf

•Steel Erection Complete – 20th Floor
By the 1st Quarter of 2010, steel erection should reach the 20th floor level. It is at this level – above the reinforced base of 1WTC – that the construction of the typical floor sections begin.

•West Street – Water, Sewer and Fire Services Complete
These represent the connection of major utility services to One World Trade Center, which will provide the building with domestic water, water for the sprinkler system, and connection to the City’s sewer system.

•Concrete Core & Slabs Complete – 3rd Floor
The Concrete Contractor will complete this core work, having waited for the Steel Contractor to advance work enough to create an appropriate lag. The concrete core and slab placement for the 3rd floor will occur once the steel installation is sufficiently ahead in order to ensure uninterrupted work.

Not to a buzzkill, but wasn't the prototype glass made by Pittsburgh Glass at great expense and the contract went to someone else who then offshored it to be have the glass made in China? Even if it is somehow made to the save technical specs, it will probably have those little stickers telling you to "Wash your hands after touching it" rofl.

What was the emergency?

Not exactly sure. We work with Clean Air New York and they issued one yesterday. It may be tough to tell from the photos, but there was a thick smog in the air all day yesterday. It seemed like we were in LA. Brooklyn was just a yellow smear.

This may sound like a dumb question but aren't they done with the big red cranes since all the large 70 ton perimeter columns are in place? Or are they installing more big columns down the road?

They are done, but the large cranes will be assisting until the tower is tall enough to mount the third and final crane on the exterior of the building.

Not sure who did the prototype, but my understanding is that the glass has been outsourced to China and is being made and shipped back.

I recommend a pro Flickr account. It's worth it, especially if you have a nice camera.

Thank you! It's a Canon s90, which is basically a G11 with a smaller body and no swivel screen. It takes incredible macro shots. I cant wait for the air to clear here to see how it does outside. I'm growing tired of taking 10mp shots and ultimately posting 1mp shots here.

:previous: Ah, they're jumping the gun again. Putting in one random column when the other side of the building isn't finished. Plus all the new plenum columns on the east side. I wonder if this tower will ever catch up with itself....

Btw the Manitowoc 18000 is so large that the crane hook looks like an anchor.:haha:

This might be a dumb question, but the exterior columns, what are they going to do to fill in between them? Like steel or concrete? Then im assuming that is what they will put the glass on

From the ground floor to the 3rd floor (the floor where all the diagonal columns start branching) they well pour blast walls as protection against truck bombs. Above the 3rd floor it's all prismatic glass curtain wall, no further structural steel needs to be added.

Great pics everybody, I love seeing the prints become reality !

As for the news, It seems as if we got a lot of steel coming in and some rapid development. I just can't wait for the base to be done, but it's also worth the wait.

The floorspace of the Freedom Tower is roughly 2/3 that of one of the Twin Towers.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but looking at that above, 1577' is considerably above roof height (1368'). Is there going to be an obs. deck within the spire? (OB DECK INTERIOR T/SLAB 1577'-10")

Zapatan

Thanks meh cd

wonderlandpark, you subtract 311 feet from the numbers

88th floor = 1093
89th floor = 1107
90th floor = 1130

100 = 1240
101 = 1254
102 = 1266

the ceilings are pretty small above the 100th floor

not bad, I think the old wtc´s highest occupied floors were around 1290 so hardly a difference.

Subtract? Since the building is at sea level, usually that means 0 in a drawing. Even starting from the bottom of the pit you might take off -90 or something. Never heard of a building counting the piles as the starting elevation (which this must be doing, makes no sense otherwise)??

It's the standard in Manhattan, posted awhile ago. Based on the bedrock below the city?

First, thank you meh cd for your correct answer in my absence.

The confusion is due to the fact that ALL PA projects use a zero point 300 feet BELOW mean high tide at Battery Park Point. The PA does not like negative elevation figures. (Remember, they do tunnels as well)

As Zapatan stated, you must subtract 311 feet 2 inches from the elevations stated on the drawings.

The fininshed lobby floor well be exactly 311' 2" above the PA zero point. Or 11' 2 " above mean high tide at Battery Park Point.

So if the 105th floor is the top of the glass building that means the last 3 are in the communications ring.

So if the thread title says 108 floors shouldn't it be changed to 1776´pinnacle 1402´roof? If not it should be changed to 105 floors

Hardhats will soon be able get their grub at a special Subway shop that will rise
alongside construction cranes at the Freedom Tower site.

By TOM TOPOUSIS
November 16, 2009

Welcome to Ground Hero.

As the Freedom Tower makes its ascent into the city skyline, rising alongside it atop a crane will be a Subway sandwich shop that will turn out subs for hungry hardhats who can't spare the time to head back down to the street.

The shop, expected to be in place by the end of the month, will be fitted into a shipping container-like structure fixed to one of the tower cranes, alongside a bathroom and construction offices for the project managers.

The concession stand will rise with the tower, eventually stopping near the 105th floor -- at roughly the height of the old Twin Towers, or about as high as the former Windows on the World restaurant was, Port Authority officials said.

PA spokesman Steve Coleman said having the concession near the top of the construction project would speed up the work.

"This will allow construction workers to stay in the tower throughout their shift rather than having to go up and down," Coleman said.

The sandwich shop is being built at a steel-fabrication plant in South Plainfield, NJ, and will be installed at the Freedom Tower by the end of the month.

And workers will get a view along with their subs -- the concession stand will come with windows, Coleman said.

He added that the steel containers that will house the shop, bathroom and offices are also designed to provide structural support for the crane, connecting it with the tower's core as it rises.

"They will rise as the building rises," he said.

With 24 jumbo steel columns now in place, the tower, formally known as 1 World Trade Center, is finally making a dent in the skyline after years of work below street level.

PA officials expect that the 200-foot base will be done by February.

"The next year will bring recognizable progress to this signature building as the public sees it rise higher and higher. It will serve as a tangible reminder that the site is no longer a pit," PA Executive Director Chris Ward said.

Once the base is complete, officials expect that the tower will rise a floor a (week), till it tops out at 105 floors in December 2011. A spire will follow, bringing the tower to 1,776 feet.
