Hey, is there any rendering of the Vehicle Security Center (VHC)--for the above-ground portion?

There aren't 12 floors of mechanical, though, there are only 6. The numbering then starts at 20 for the actual floors. In an older building, like the one I'm in, a few thousand square feet on every single floor are dedicated to AC and venting and whatnot. In a new skyscraper, none of any given floor is devoted to that, and all of it is centralized onto a few floors. FURTHERMORE, on mildly older skyscrapers, think 50s-80s, the tops of buildings were devoted to mechanical floors. Take One Chase Manhattan Plaza. There are 3-5 mechanical floors on top of the building. The top floors are the most valuable, though, and other than water towers, you wouldn't dedicate the top of a building to mechanical equipment like that. In the case of 1WTC, where security has been made such an issue, this gives you 200 feet from the street to have be a bunker instead of an office building, so that's handy as well. One final note, because 1WTC is so tall, and the core is so large, the lowest floors that are devoted to mechanical are not particularly large as compared to higher floors, so the actual square footage of space committed out of the building is not what it seems.

I'd be curious to see the plans (whoever might have them) of how many mechanical type floors there actually are before floor "20."

(And I'm sorry if they're already posted somewhere on the 481 pages of this thread and I'm just too lazy to spend several hours searching.)

Oh, they're keeping it as a sort of monument to the way things used to be at the site? I guess that makes sense - I've been visiting the place since I was a small kid, and even remember walking across that bridge with my grandmother (and she departed this world a long time ago). It's nice that some portion of the old state of affairs there will stay untouched.

is the cocoon system going to alter its square shape as the building tapers more and more?

steveve
Aug 27, 2010, 5:00 PM
This has probably already been asked before but is it just a trend for a building with a square base to end up with 6/8 sided building, or is it for functional reasons. because its probably not the most ideal for maximizing floor space.
For example 1WTC and SWFC:

http://wadias.in/site/arzan/blog/wp-photos/20060618-111153-4.jpg

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/74/Freedom_Tower_New.jpg

Onn
Aug 27, 2010, 5:19 PM
Purely design related, not all of them going up have followed that trend either. Check the IFC and ICC in Hong Kong. The floor space is not really compromised much however, they are still extremely large buildings.

RoldanTTLB
Aug 27, 2010, 6:28 PM
Not sure if you're keeping track, but 1WTC starts as an 8 sided building, tightens to a square, then finishes as a square. The whole time it also maintains 4 vertical faces, which do maximize floor area. It's meant to evoke the original twins without actually running ground to roof with 4 sharp lines.

Excellent post, just 2 corrections, there are 11 floors of mechanical spaces and every office floor has at least one fan room. (See prints above)

I would think they well have too. Otherwise the corners are going to be way to far away to offer any protection.

Why does it says 1,551 feet to the top of floor 100? Is the height measured from the lowest floor below grade level?

The PA uses an elevation system with the zero point being 300 feet below mean high tide at Battery Park Point.

The Lobby is at elevation 311' 2" or 11' 2" above mean high tide at Battery Park Point. (Subtract 311' 2" from any elevation shown on the prints.)

Try getting that info from another source !

(Yes, I am still bitter over Traynor's arrogance. If there was a way to block my answes from Traynor's being able to see them I would use it.)

I am willing and able to answer any question I can.

Having so many tunnels in it's domain and the PA not liking negative numbers in it's elevation system they adopted the 300' below system. For example, the lowest point in the Lincoln Tunnel is 236'.

Having been a skyscraper and bridge fanatic since i was about six, i most likely missed my calling. when others were drawing whatever when i was young, i drew skylines with a suspension bridge thrown in for good measure;) so, finding this forum to read and learn about my favorite city:cheers: and all the new construction going on has been a lot of fun, thanks to you all!

now that's how you create a good park!

symmetry should stay within the city, and parks should look as natural as possible. we don't need giant manicured plaza's with massive green lawns like ones being developed in china and the middle east. congrats ny :yup:

Yep, it'll ride the rails up the 7.5 degree slope.

The new crane looks to be a Favco model TD133. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Max Load: 8 metric tonnes @ 25meters
8.81 short tons @ 82feet

For comparison, the other 2 tower cranes are Favco 760D.

Max Load: 64 metric tonnes @10meters
70.5 short tons @ 32.8 feet

Also, a 760D can lift more than half the capacity of a TD133 at 3 times the radius.

The 3 year old site plan I have says the third crane is for the concrete contractor.

But may things have changed in 3 years.:)

hey i was jst wonderin but will this tower get a Hat Truss ontop of the building like the original towers did ?

No, the concrete core (amonge other things) makes them unnecessary.

Isn't it necessary to put a Hat Truss on top of this behemoth? Wouldn't it effectively interlock all four sides?

Also, my next question may be silly for some of the high-end enthusiasts here, but for the noobs--what is cladding? Is it the exterior wall (curtain wall)? That's how I'm interpreting it. :koko:

Thanks =)

Someone correct me if I am wrong but hat trusses and belt trusses are meant to link together the sides to fight against certain rotational/torquing forces. I would assume the presence of a concrete core that carries most of the weight would eliminate the need of that. Since the sides don't carry all the weight (as in a tube structure like the twins) those forces are much less. Additionally the sheer walls embedded in the concrete would absorb all the lateral and rotational forces. That would effectively eliminate the need to have trusses every so often to hold things together.

I thought that since there was going to be a spire/tv antenna ontop of the building they would need a Hat Truss

You are assuming that Tower One because of it's hight and the spire requires the same structural elements as the Twins. Your assumption is wrong.

Nowhereman1280 is rather close to the mark.

The core takes a bit more than half the gravity load of the entire tower and the spire sits directly on top of the core. No need for a hat truss, the core takes all the gravity load of the spire.

The perimeter steel takes most of the wind loads. The spire is anchored to the perimeter steel via 8 six inch diameter Kevlar cables. No need for a hat truss the perimeter steel takes all the wind load. (Kevlar because it is invisible to electromagnetic radiation.)

Each exterior wall of the tower is called a wind frame, it has to be thought of as a solid plane of steel because that is how it reacts under load.

One last thing, each floor of Tower One is also a strong structural element in and of itself securing the core to the perimeter. (The ends of the main floor beams are actually dovetailed into the concrete walls of the core, something impossible to do if the core were to rise ahead of the floors.)
(Never expect a non-technical answer to a technical question-- Albert Einstein)

BStyles
Aug 29, 2010, 9:43 PM
The hat trusses were meant to redistribute wind loads from the perimeter walls to the core. On 9/11, with three walls compensating for one damaged one, the loads were redistributed through the hat trusses to an already weakened core, which ironically brought the towers down.

1WTC turns 45 degrees on its base, and unlike the twins, it can probably cut though high winds with no problem. The renderings on 1WTC make it look as if the spire's cables are attached to the communications ring. Thanks for the input, Zen. It's amazing what we can make concrete do.

The rendering you refer to is old and outdated.

On the prints there are 2 load factors for each perimeter column, expressed in KIPS, the maximum load under compression, and the maximum load under tension, or, the max load if the column is on the Leeward side of the tower or the maximum load if the column is on the windward side. ( Think Hurricane force winds.)

If you put enough rebar in it concrete well sit up and beg, or go fetch a ball.

One day I tried to count the number of #11 rebars running vertically in the core, I gave up ! (First time I ever saw #20 rebar, in 30 years of construction, was at Tower One.)

PS: rebar is numbered by how thick it is in 1/8ths of an inch, #4 rebar is half inch or 12.7mm.

Yes, it's the outside material (glass, bricks, stucco, etc.) used to cover the building.

Zensteeldude
Aug 29, 2010, 11:37 PM
In the case of Tower One the curtain wall refers to the outside skin of the building ABOVE the 20th floor slab. Below that is somethig a bit different comprised of prysmatic glass or plastic panels backed by stainless steel grating.

actually its going to take more then that to surpass the varcey aka verizon building. because tower 1v2 is 401.7 feet high now and the verizon building is 500 feet tall. so you got about 98 feet left, so you divide 98 feet divided by 13.4=7.3 floors left. so 4 more raises with the floor building and it will topple the verizon building and i predict it will be some time the end of october of 2010.
