Hello I'm new to skyscaperPage and not sure if it has been asked before but does anybody know why they didn't add a roof top observatory?? I'm sorry if I double posted. Thanks

:previous: The rooftop of 1 WTC is going to be filled with lots of antenna and cooling equipment. Its doesn't seem like there would be any viable space up there for a safe outdoor experience. Quite a loss but it has no affect on the greatness this tower's existence, especially today.

Wow, that is one very powerful tatoo! Maybe someday somebody will have a tatoo of the new WTC, as well.

I haven't mentioned it on the boards... but - I got a NYC skyline tattoo done on my back while I was visiting NYC in June - the day after I hung out with Carlos, actually. It is the Brooklyn Bridge view of Manhattan and I specifically requested the new 1 WTC be tattooed on it... my artist included the ESB and the Chrysler Building as well. If anyone wants to see a picture, drop me a message and I'll send you the picture. :)

That said...

Bless everybody who were hurt or perished on 9/11. I have thought about every single one of them over the past 11 years. I was freshly 16 years old and a high school junior on 9/11/01. It was Homecoming Week at my high school - and by sheer coincidence, we had planned Patriot Day to fall on 9/11/01... So I was already decked out in red, blue and white that day. I still actually have the shirt I wore that day. I was just in numb shock that whole day - how could anyone mastermind something so terrible... all these people on the four doomed flights who had no idea beforehand... As well as these who were trapped above the point of impact in both towers... Just sickening. :(

But, I am very thankful that we have been able to move on, to rebuild, to strengthen. I was obsessed with NYC as a kid... And 9/11 only made that stronger. Seeing everybody come together to lend a helping hand. New Yorkers are a tough bunch. :)

Shit! Just curious. How far in advance did you plan your vacation? When I read that, I just got chills...

I'm sure you're greatful you took it! I sure as hell would be. You took a vacation; God gave you the rest of your life...

I think I asked for the time off in June 2001. September 10 was the day my dad retired from the Navy and had his ceremony. I had actually debated flying back to New York the day after the retirement ceremony, because I wanted to get back to my girlfriend and a project that was ongoing at the office (we were testing Windows XP), so I would have been back in NY on the 11th, and at work on 9/12. Didn't happen though.

I'm thankful my dad retired from the Navy. That's all I can say

I saw a cool picture a year or so ago with a pair of rebuilt twins and the new 1WTC capped, complete with the communications ring, around the 50th floor. I haven't been able to find it since then, but it was pretty cool all the same.

I'd like to think tenants will be moving in come April but unfortunately I don't see the observation deck being open to the public by then.

Further, I don't see an open access plaza/memorial until the entire site is substantially complete.

On that note, I wonder if I'm alone in my reservation to visit the memorial while there's airport like security in place? Every time I go down West street and see the line of tourists coming out of the 9/11 gift shop and wrapping around the Marriott - I die a little on the inside.

The set up just doesn't seem conducive to the quiet, reflective and cathartic moment I need to have in that space to finally come to grips with how my life and city changed all those years ago. It's also why I can't go to any of those ceremonies.

Since 9/11 several 200m+ skyscrapers have been completed adjacent to the WTC (most notably Goldman Sachs, Barclay, 7WTC, Beekman etc). Unfortunately, the Lower Manhattan skyline is still far away from being restored but 2 and 3WTC will finally fill the gap. 1 and 4WTC are just the dawn of a new beginning.

1 WTC Spire Soon to Rise

September 11, 2012

With 1 World Trade Center (WTC) now topped out at 1,368 feet -- or 105 stories, the same height as the twin towers -- Port Authority crews in August began building out the roof and preparing it for the new steel architectural spire. The 408-foot-tall spire is designed to support antennas and communications equipment, and by spring 2013 will raise 1 WTC to the height of 1,776 feet above street level, making it the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.

The spire is being fabricated as 16 separate sections at a factory near Montreal, and will be transported by barge to New York City in mid-November. During its 11-day voyage, the barge will travel down the Eastern Seaboard and into New York Harbor to dock at Pier 25, at N. Moore and West Street.

Just after Thanksgiving, crews will begin to transport the spire segments one by one to the WTC site. Each one will be hoisted from the barge onto a 21-foot-wide truck specially designed to carry the sections feet and weigh up to 47 tons (about the weight of a full tractor-trailer). Upon reaching the WTC site, the spire sections will be assembled, piece by piece, at the top of 1 WTC.

Workers are currently installing a temporary steel framework at the top of the tower to support the spire during assembly. Two cranes will lift each spire section into place: one carries the section up to the 1,370-foot-high platform, and another lifts the piece into place onto the spire. The process is expected to conclude in early 2013, but the exact date will depend on weather during the operations.

What building are the 2 lights on? Maybe its just me, but I wouldve liked to see the lights in the old building footprints and only be turned on once a year on 9/11.

I think it's going to be amazing seeing the WTC site from the terrace of 4WTC,since it's going to be angled, overlooking the entire WTC site.

NYGuy:

What were some of the engineering challenges on 4 World Trade?

Mr. Demerjian: One of the exciting things we’re doing is creating an outdoor terrace on that setback for tenants to use as functional space, like Rock Center. That’s up on the 56th floor, which is taller than 7 WTC. Some of the challenge is the wind. How do you deal with that and create a windscreen? We’re talking about that, making sure it’s a usable, friendly space. There are some challenges with that and it’s great.

Anyway, I'm done. Carlos is the only poster doing his duty on this page.

:hi: Uaarkson, i think people are very passionate about this building but when all is said and done all those negative comments will just go away!

let's not forget the original World Trade Center towers were hated by most critics when built!

Part of that is because there's ongoing construction work on ALL sides of the site.

One World Trade Center Won’t Get an Exclusive Zip Code: USPS Officials
7:00am

» When it opened in 1971, the World Trade Center towers shared a single exclusive ZIP code, 10048. But when it is completed next year, the 104-story 1 World Trade Center building will be relegated to 10007, a zip code that includes dozens of other less notable buildings in its fold. But the World Trade Center isn’t New York City’s only building to have claimed a vanity ZIP code. Since the ZIP—or Zoning Improvement Plan—was instated by the United States Postal Code in 1963 in order to map out a more efficient delivery network, 43 Manhattan buildings—and their owners, of course—have earned codes exclusive to their address, either because of their great size or the number of people who occupy them. After the jump, a comprehensive list of Manhattan’s 43 buildings with exclusive ZIP codes and some of the vital statistics that helped earn each building bragging rights, along with illustrations by Brian Taylor.

I was just wondering, once the tower is finished and the immediate plaza around it is open to pedestrians, are there any plans to somehow put back the gold globe that was at the center of the old wtc plaza, and which survived the attacks? I know they moved the globe to a nearby park, but just curious if they planned to reunite it with the new wtc tower when it's finished next year?

I agree, it was amazing that the sphere survived the attacks. It was of course damaged, but basically intact. I'd like to see them incorporate it somehow into the plaza beneath 1wtc. Maybe even restore it. I don't recall when it was put on the original plaza, maybe after the 93 bombings?

The Sphere was installed at the site in 1973, so it was there as long as the Twins were. It really should be brought back to the WTC site, or at the very least, be included in Liberty Park across the street.

I hardly consider a move of a hundred feet to the West and right where a couple of trees or a strip of grass is going to go "radical". It is just another shameful whitewashing of the meaning of the whole memorial. The decision not to include the Sphere is reprehensible.

Just like they planted the "survivor tree" on the plaza, which was near the base of the Twin Towers and survived the attacks, I personally think it would be a powerful symbol of continuity and resilience to put the sphere somewhere near the base of 1wtc on the Memorial Plaza. Or in front of the performing arts center. Maybe with a plaque stating its history at the site. Or maybe even restore it to its pre-attack appearance. Just a thought. I am sure as time goes on, artists and scupltors will come along who will want to add tasteful, sculptural elements to the Memorial Plaza. The site should be a mix between remembrance and hope in my opinion. The near-completion of 1wtc is a big step in moving forward.

Seriously fellow forumers, How can anyone say the Sphere that survived 9-11 doesn't belong anywhere close to the site(because it's dented from falling debris and falling bodies,, perhaps?) This is just (in my opinion) the worst thing any fellow American could ever say.. Why am I so pissed and others aren't, Seriously the sphere represented the 2 bldgs... I saw it, before I entered back in 99 and it was Magnificent, It was the first thing I saw before I entered the WTC and remember it to this day.., Even though I live states away,, I remembr that sphere...

The Sphere was a sign of hope more than anything for New Yorkers...

The fact that it was originally sculpted as a symbol of world peace made the Sphere's endurance a poignant symbol of resilience after a horrific act of terror.

"It survived, out of all the things, it survived," Michael Burke told The Huffington Post. Burke's brother, Capt. William F. Burke Jr. of Engine Company 21, was killed on 9/11. "That's symbolic. It's a message that we want to convey to future generations. Hope, faith and the enduring values that overcome intolerance."...

Perhaps learning about the Sphere would change your opinion of its value and its display worthiness.

And in the scupltor's own words:

"It was a sculpture, now it's a monument," Koenig said, noting how the relatively fragile metal globe had mostly survived the cataclysm. "It now has a different beauty, one I could never imagine. It has its own life – different from the one I gave to it."Link to Wikipedia article about the: Sphere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sphere)

Yes the sphere has meaning way beyond it being merely a sculpture....it was and is as others have said here a sign of hope....in the immediate aftermath that it survived and we will too

I'm perfectly fine with the sphere being in Liberty Park it's better than it being all the way in Battery Park.

I was always strongly against putting the sphere in the memorial. It's much better in the elevated Liberty Park, overlooking the memorial.

But this thread is about 1WTC!!!!!

The sphere looks disgusting - it's an eyesore - it shouldn't be displayed anywhere

A lot of people disagree with that statement, obviously.

In fact, there has been talk recently of putting the sphere on one of the plazas around the Freedom Tower. I can't find the article I read, but here's a little...

The “Sphere” must make way soon — perhaps within a month or so — for a renovation of the park by the Department of Parks and Recreation on behalf of the nonprofit Battery Conservancy.....

The likeliest place would seem to be on the 9/11 Memorial plaza, not far from where the sculpture stood before the attack...But the chairman of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center Foundation — otherwise known as Mayor Bloomberg — will not entertain this idea. He hasn’t said so publicly, but his opposition presumably has to do with the fact that the memorial has already been designed to underplay evidence of the savagery of 9/11. What’s more, structural reinforcement would be needed to set the 22.5-ton sculpture on the plaza, which doubles as the roof of an enormous underground complex.

(The PA) favors moving the “Sphere” to the one place at the World Trade Center site over which the Port Authority has little control; and where the man who does have control doesn’t want it to go. That doesn’t sound too promising. There is, however, a plaza over which the Port Authority has authority and which, at the moment, has no defined future use. It is a small open space on Fulton Street, directly opposite the north memorial pool, between 1 World Trade Center and the site of a planned performing arts center.

Alternate location at trade center site could be new home for iconic sphere

September 10, 2012

The iconic Koening Sphere might return to the World Trade Center site, near the One World Trade Center tower, as an alternative to putting it back where it had been located on the plaza between the former Twin Towers....Burke, of the Bronx — whose brother, Capt. William Burke of Engine 21, was killed rescuing people in the towers — suggested to the Port Authority in June that returning the sphere to the site could have been the centerpiece of this year's commemoration, since the 9/11 museum will not be open in time.
Burke’s idea to return the sphere to the trade center site was endorsed by Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye.

He said Foye proposed the alternative location on the site during a meeting they had, after Burke spoke at the June Port Authority board meeting.
“He said an alternative might be next to One World Trade Center. I said, ‘That works for me,’ ” Burke said. “He said he’d look at that and the idea of returning it to the memorial plaza where it was.”

I personaly think that the sphere should either be in the muesuem lobby or one of the towers lobbies. If any 1 wtc seems the best

I would put it at the northeast corner of the memorial plaza...maybe lose 4 or 5 trees at that spot. Since the Museum pavilion is now where the Sphere used to be and I do not think the Museum lobby could house it, then the closest comparable and easily accessible location would be in the plaza.

Well, yeah, if you had a shitton of debris - we're talking well into millions of tons here - falling right on you, of course you're gonna look like a f'ing eyesore! Do you tell severe burn victims they look like eyesores?? I think it ROCKS that The Sphere survived the 9/11 attacks AND all that debris. I'd LOVE to see it in the memorial plaza, alongside the Survivors' Tree. :)

If you look at the layout of the memorial plaza as I posted on the previous page, you will see that according to the original design plan, there will be no trees in the spot just West of where it originally was. It was only going to be a clearing with a few strips of the grass anyway.

There is no reasonable excuse not to place it there, other than the owners of the buildings do not want their future tenants turned off by the constant reminder of the horror that happened nearby. That is the REAL reason the memorial has been so sanitized of the actual events. The owners literally buried the memory (Museum underground) to avoid the visual reminders.

That is the exact place I was referring to. I was under the impression it was originally where the pavilion now is, but your diagram is exactly where I was thinking.

I know this is the ONE WTC thread............

My bad; I forgot what page I was on, and I was responding to another post about the Sphere...although it was suggested about moving the Sphere into the lobby of 1WTC. I believe the "houses" are mechanical/vent buildings.

Excuse the question that has likely been answered already in one of the other 26,000+ posts, but in an effort to make my post about a 1WTC topic I'll throw this out there - when will the building be open to move in? I know we are looking at late 2013 for completion, but will they wait until everything is completed (i.e. observation deck) before allowing tenants like Conde Nast and the GSA to begin moving in, even in a limited capacity?
