I disagree. If the official height isn't 1776 feet then a lot of people will be confused and angered since "1776" and "tallest building in the Western Hemisphere" has been the tagline for this building for years.

If that was the case,Durst would have already met an angry mob on his doorstep.

http://i45.tinypic.com/2iuck68.jpg

As has been already pointed out, this comparison is incorrect. More specifically, it’s extremely misleading and makes a lot of errors re: perspective, height normalization, etc. The building tops are almost aligned, and the tower’s edges are almost traced correctly, but very small errors in those tracings lead to large differences in projected height, and the bottoms of the buildings are not aligned at all (because the actual perspective differs from the render) — overall it adds up to a significant deviation. Also, this projection was done a while ago. Anyone using applying it to project the height compared to our current tower is compounding the error further.

To demonstrate, here is the same image, re-edited. Hm, suddenly you wonder how the original showed such a higher roof.
http://f.cl.ly/items/3l2d3I3I0G3t1A1p1e2F/1WTCcompEdit.jpg

I will post a more reliable comparison if I can find usable images. In the meantime I highly, highly recommend the diagram Otie has been maintaining as it is pixel-perfect and well-sourced. I will post the link once I find it. EDIT: here’s Otie’s diagram, this shows that the actual remaining height is much more modest than that old projection would have you think (note that I am not disparaging 1WTC’s height at all, in fact I think it is an impressive height!): http://www.flickr.com/photos/62018165@N04/7353421608/

Guys I think that I've just accepted the whole spire situation. I mean it's not great, but it's better than nothing. The old one was better, but Durst is trying to save money so that he can generate more revenue for 1 WTC and put more money in his own pocket.

I still think it looks better than Willis Tower's antenna as well as John Hancock Building's. At least we're able to say that. And who knows, if they can come up with a cool lighting scheme for it, then I think more people will change their minds about it.

Just a few more weeks until it's topped out! Can't wait! I'm gonna be going there in November. Do you all think the glass will be finished by then?

What if Donald Trump were to donate 20 million dollars?:D

Trump doesn't have that kind of money to "donate". His net worth has plummeted as the value of his real estate holdings most certainly has -- and that's assuming very conservative leverage ratios on his real estate.

That's the reason he's not really even a developer anymore. He's been licensing the Trump name to building projects that he has little or no involvement with in attempt to make himself solvent again. And let's not overlook his sham online Trump "University" and cheesy line of Trump ties, suits, chocolates, etc. Talk about pitiful desperation. The guy is a fucking buffoon con man.

Honestly, this diagram kinda confuses me. We have 2 jumps left. The Next jump takes us to the 105th floor, 1,334 feet. Then the next and final jump will take us to the parapet, 1,368 feet. I don't know if you mentioned this or the point your trying to make but we do not have that much left to go. We have about 60 feet left. The positioning of the rendering along with the real life picture does not match. Just wanting to clarify.

I am getting the sinking feeling people are just looking at the diagram without reading the whole post. :( I specifically made that diagram (or rather, re-edited it) to show how flawed such projections are — the original I was criticizing was WAY off in its projection, and was being dragged forward in time to boot, creating a double error in perception.

I put big red text in that diagram to try and prevent anyone from thinking that it was in any way, shape, or form indicative of ANYTHING current or accurate, but apparently that wasn’t enough?

So, in big big letters:

That diagram is significantly unreliable. It is meant to show how such ad-hoc diagrams can be very unreliable. It debunks an earlier, even more useless version of the same diagram. It does not apply to the current real 1WTC which is already taller and clad higher. The end. :haha:

Hey Carlos, post the other one that I sent ya too :D

This pic (and the other one I sent him) were taken around 1pm today when I visited the 9/11 memorial. They were lifting a BIG beam up, and I had my camcorder with me so I got it on video as well. If you look at the pic I had him post, you can see the beam at the top. That was when they had finished lifting it and were bringing it over. :)

I think so. What I think they should do is put in more cables so that it creates a sort of cone shape on top of the communications ring so that the tower will seem taller. They could light it up pretty well, too.

The top row of beams is floor 104 at 1,313' Floor 104 still needs columns and beams installed to take bring us to the roof level or floor 105 at 1,334' Then will come the 33' parapet.

It should be done by December, 2012. Work will still be done in the interior. That won't be finished till April, 2013.

You can just take the subway to the World Trade Center station and transfer to the PATH which will take you over to Hoboken. It's $2.25 for the subway and $2.00 for PATH. You can use the Metrocard for the PATH system as well. I have been to the World Trade Center, but never went over to New Jersey.

I've never received dollar coins from the regular MTA machines, CTA machines, or DC Metro machines. Maybe I'm just lucky. It isn't a huge deal, but it was a bit of a surprise since they aren't really in circulation in my part of the country.

Anyway, I think I've driven stuff of course enough. Back to 1 WTC. No new steel yet, right? Looks like I just caught them hauling up some more stairs to attach to the side of the tower on the earthcam.
