WTF?! Otie's diagram shows the observation deck now at 1241 ft instead of 1266? So now the observation deck isn't even as tall as the ESB?!:hell:

Now it's 112 ft shorter than the Sears Tower Obs. deck, 70 feet shorter than the original tower 1 deck, and nearly 140 ft shorter than the rooftop deck.

Oh well, at least it will be a nice building to look at from the outside... but 3 billion and all we get is an observation deck that's the same height as the ESB's?:koko:
That's a real nice gift for the people of NYC.

Will hopefully be going back to New York by the end of 2013, it's such a great city to visit.

Yeah, but have you ever been in the 102nd floor observation "room"?

It's more like an oversized closet - I think maybe 15 people at a time can fit in there, uncomfortably. The vast majority of people only visit the 86th floor observation deck.

Any anime fans or anyone with a Netflix account might be interested in checking out the ending to the 2nd episode of "Eden of the East". There's an interesting scene where the girl is showing the guy pics of her recent trip to New York City and then the guy sees a pic looking like one of STR's renderings of the new WTC and says "What's this?" and then it follows with a discussion about the "Freedom Tower" under construction and how she can't wait for it to be finished, and about Ground Zero and 9/11. I wish I knew how to take screen captures, but anyone with netflix can watch it instantly.

Disregard the above. Guess the simplified antenna profile on the diagram threw me off :duh I see what gramsjdg was talking about which used to be the airship terminal? Located in the upper right of the pic below:

Yes. I have been going there 7 to 8 times in the last 35 years since I was 10. That is true about the 102nd floor. It's like an observation room. It had been remodeled the last time i saw it 4 years ago. The roof deck at 2 WTC and The ESB were my Favorites to visit. Does anyone know what the total square footage will be of both observation floors in 1WTC when complete and what the original inside deck was in tower 2.

Supposedly, the spire will flash the letter N in morse code for New York.

Couldn't we do something a little more special? How about flash 9/11/01?

:slob::slob: SONY that pic is ridiculous. In regard to the lighting scheme, the beacon at the top of the spire will rotate and send out N, though I wish they'd include a second light opposite the first one flashing out Y.

But it'll be nice to have an entirely new lighting scheme on what will be the cities tallest building, as opposed to a color scheme like the ESB or BofA, or just a light on top of the spire like NYTT.

To see NYT, BoA, 4 TS, ESB, and 1WTC all lit up will be incredible. It will visually link Midtown with LM and make NYC look much, much larger.

I wish it were more creative than N, though.

Morse code is just on and offs on whatever medium you are transmitting on. Traditionally it is rendered into sound for the operator to listen to. If you can decode Morse, or at least you know it is Morse code, it seems reasonable. if you can't or don't, then it just looks like something is wrong with the flasher unless the pattern is very simple. SOS is ... ___ ... N is _. These are easily describable sequences. However, the number 9 is ____. Slash is _.._.
If you put together more than a few disparate letters you end up with a rather long sequence of longs, shorts, and gaps. Unless you both knew the Morse code AND took the time to decode it, a sequence of more than a few changes in mode (i.e. longs to shorts or shorts to longs) will seem random/intermittent/broken.
NNNNNN would be
Long-light, short-off, short-light, long-off, Long-light, short-off, short-light, long-off, Long light etc etc etc... In terms of dashes and dots this is
_. _. _. _. _.
That's a pattern you can get your mind around even if you don't know what it is sending.

NYC would be
_. _.__ _._. Imagine if you didn't know that was Morse code. It looks like a broken blinker.
WTC1, even more complex, would be
.__ _ _._. ._____

So... as a fan of Morse code myself, I'd welcome it being more complex. It would be amusing. Imagine going home on the Staten Island Ferry and having my out-of-town visitors watching the bizarre flashing. The geek in me would have great joy in explaining why the apparently broken warning light actually meant something. I could teach them a few letters in Morse. They'd act impressed. They'd grumble about me on the long drive or flight back to wherever. They'd never visit or call again.

They wrap colored plastic around the construction lights. By "they" I mean one guy, at least the one guy that did the X-Mas display after hours. There might be a couple of people doing it now, but it's just the workers being patriotic. The PA is not paying them overtime, or rescheduling their work to facilitate the display.

Those perspective shots are righteously keen. Downtown, the Brooklyn core and Jersey City look like a single big-ass entity. And unless my eyes are deceiving me, 4WTC's crane is just barely poking up behind the Chase tower.
One of this chap's photos shows ESB and my Three Musketeers in a unique visual demonstration of skyline dominance.

Edit: I hope this comes out right:

With it all lit up red, white, and blue.....it really does look like the Freedom Tower. Had the named been kept, it would've been cool if they had found a way to light it up like that every night. It sure would be cool to see the building lit up like this one more time once it's topped out! Thanks for all the pics from everyone. It's awesome and so patriotic.

Wow... I was amazed at all of the people who lined up in Jersey City, Weehawken, and Hoboken extremely early before the fireworks.

Like I said, I live in the Silver Towers, so I could see all of the people lining up.. It was probably crowded at 4.

I bet the BEST view of all was from the helicopters flying above!

Also, I know the park is opening on September 11, but will they have the pools and everything already fixed up?

Agreed.. Church St at Lispenard St always creeps me out when I walk there.. I know the drain cover that they were filming when the first tower was hit is still there.. It's just weird to know that millions of people across the world have seen it and knowing that is the first glimpse of the tower getting hit..

I think I might be visiting New York again in the holiday season(last 2 weeks of December) this year to watch that Radio City Christmas special to show my brother and sister for the first time. So,to ask,how tall will WTC 1 be at that time? I know it will at roof top by early 2012,but will it be already taller than the Empire State Building at that time?

The tower's steel frame is scheduled to "top out" in late 2011/early 2012, meaning the steel frame will reach the top of the building.

See here:

Also, probably near December, they will be at the 82-85th floor (my speculation).

When the running Vice President came to my town to speak at a local stadium, I didn't find out until the morning of the event. I was supposed to work that day. I phoned in to work and said I wouldn't be coming to work that day. That is the only day in my life that I have skipped work. I did it because I knew that for years to come, I wouldn't regret missing that day at work as much as I would regret missing that piece of history.

The final completion of Freedom Tower evokes similar feelings for me, and for that reason I am already planning to travel out to New York (I live in Seattle) to witness its grand opening. As a young adult, much of my life has been impacted by the world events which were triggered by 9/11. That one day critically defined the course and devotion of my life. Seeing One World Trade Center rising again is therefore a part of history which I am honored to witness and aim not to miss. Cheers to the folks who are building this great monument. I aim to be there in 2013, so long as the world doesn't end in 2012. ;)

I don't post in here usually, but I do want to take the time to thank the New Yorkers who take pictures of the WTC site and post them here regularly. Being thousands of miles away, I wouldn't be able to watch the progress of this project if it weren't for you. Your cameras are the eyes of the world.

What bugs me about these documentaries is not politics, but the fact that they are coming out before the job is actually finished. It seems to me that a documentary show about a construction job ought to conclude with the completion of the building. But they seem to be jumping the gun with these. Rise of Freedom is coming out now but T1 will not be open for occupancy for another year at least. And the Discovery Channel one, The Rising, isn't that also coming out before anything will actually be completed?

Of course, it might be 2016 (optimistically) before all six major projects now underway are finished, and one wouldn't want to wait that long to see a documentary about the site. (Heck, it could be a lot longer than that if they waited for tower 5 and the Performing Arts Center.) But one would think they could at least wait for T1 and T4 to be completed before coming out with these self congratulatory shows. It just seems unseemly to me. Like having your graduation party when you are still a sophomore or something.
