I'm in Park Ridge, NJ. About 35 miles north of you. Only 29 miles north of the World Trade Center, though.

Oh really? Good to know there's another New Jerseyan here :)

Freedom Tower to overtake Empire State Building

The tower being erected at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan is currently nine feet from rising above the Empire State Building. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

nine feet? Six feet? ugh this is really annoying everybody is saying something different

And in case you didn't see it, sorry if you did, but I really want people to understand this photo I took- thanks

Lol this why I never listen to the media. They are usually behind and they rarely ever get their facts straight such as saying the tower being topped out by 2014 when we all know it will be 1,776 feet or whatever by the end of the year hopefully.

Anyway, any work on when floor beams might be installed? I haven't seen perimeter steel just hanging out in the open for this long before.

Outer beams are being installed now.

It's already petty dominant. From most vantage points, it's extra dominant on the lower Manhattan skyline, a reminder for people who've already forgotten what was lost down there.

Oh god, the latest pictures are killing me. From the sheer awesomeness, that is. Two months til I get to visit NYC again -- I am soooooo excited to see what 1 WTC looks like then! I don't care if steel is still going up (altho I am sure they will have just finished that by the time I get there - not that many floors left!) or if the glass is still stalling then. I never had the chance to see the original twin towers in person, plus I was born about 14 years after the original towers were done being built (if I correctly recall 1971 as being the year the original towers were finally topped out - I know they didn't have the grand opening until early 1973 though).

It has made me so happy to have had the opportunity to come to NYC and see, for myself, the rebuilding of the complex. Even better that I'm coming back again (and I plan on coming back again for new years!) so soon.

As for the 'ground zero' name - I agree, the media needs to be informed of that. Lol. I remember reading somewhere a number of years ago that when the complex was still essentially ground zero, that the New Yorkers hated when people would call it that. So I stopped calling it that then. Now, when that name comes up in conversation with someone else, I have to remind them - it's really not ground zero anymore, they began rebuilding years ago. And there are - GASP! - BUILDINGS there now! And a park! It's not a literal hole in the ground anymore! The only holes that exist now are the reflecting pools at the park.

So - let's hear it for the WTC!! Yeah! :)

Such a silly waste of engineering work now that the base is just a square. It is what it is, I guess. I'll reserve final judgment until I see the finished product, but I can't help but feeling the LED backlit base is going to look kitschy in 10 years.

There is something fishy about that wall. I bet it is for security reasons, not cost. I mean, why remove a staircase and put up a wall otherwise? Also, it looks like they put up some kind of glass barrier around the plaza. Perhaps to protect against a blast?

More likely it was yet another "security" measure. The high-boxed gardens provide another barrier against vehicular attacks while also serving to limit the avenue of approach for pedestrians to one set of stairs. This redesign looks like it was intended to eliminate multiple approaches and to discourage loitering by pedestrians.

Hell, just put a crew-served weapon position to the right of WTC's entrance and you've got almost all avenues of approach covered.

It doesn't matter. The old plaza of the World Trade Center didn't draw in much people either. Most of the shopping and the activities for the new World Trade Center would be the same. Either it would be in the skyscrapers or underground.

The plaza will get enclosed in black fiberglass to protect visitors against breeze.

What I don't get is why to add boxed gardens when you have already big fat bollards tied down all over the perimeter. Pretty sure the NYPD is behind all of this.
While these box gardens were added for security concers, I'm pretty sure the removal of the terraced steps and the fountain/skylight were ment to reduce costs. Benches simply don't work here, completely out of the architectural context...

Well at least the old one didn't have a big wall covering up half of it. I agree with aquablue, the old design was nice and open and inviting. this new design is going to sort of create a distance of the building from the people walking by it. I wouldn't mind if they got rid of the fountain and kept the big staircase, but this is not good. It seems like this would cost more because now they need a wall, before they just needed to make the staircase.

Wait wait wait. I thought they already poured all of those stairs back in 2009? That redesign is absolute garbage. Disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my feelings on this.

Personally I don't like the new design:hell:, I think the PA is too paranoid about another terrorist attack so they chose a different design for the plaza. I liked the old plaza, it was more open than this one. Only one staircase? What if somebody is running late for work there and had to run to that one staircase? I wouldnt like to work there...

The Twin Towers weren't exactly open. The plaza was two stories above the street. You had to climb two flights of stairs to get up. The plaza was windy and was devoid of anything except for concrete and the fountain at the center. The buildings surrounding it blocked the street views. This design isn't much different from that.

However the original World Trade Center's plaza was designed by Minoru Yamasaki to have more meaning architecturally even though it wasn't attractive. It was supposed to be a people's space in human scale to balance the huge bulk of the towers, and to bring a touch of serenity. The plaza also allowed the towers to be taken in as a whole. I am quoting a bit from Henry Gutthard. A man who worked with Yamasaki for the original World Trade Center.

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/09/09/us/sept-11-reckoning/the-world-trade-center-as-it-was.html

I think the Memorial would do the job now of balancing the bulk of the new towers of the World Trade Center. It would be the open space and the serenity that people need much like the plaza was.

:haha: Tenants will access the building through the north and south entrances, the west entrance is designated for tourists heading up to the observation deck.

The rendering was modified by the PA itself, they're too stingy to allow the 3D studio to make the modifications. Rendering can be found in this pdf (http://www.panynj.gov/corporate-information/pdf/bcp-032912-wtc.pdf) file, don't expect to see it at the PA's main site.

This is a very cool piece on the Mohawk Indians from Montreal that have been building Manhattan skyscrapers for the past 100 years...extremely well done as only NPR can do.

Fewer Tribal Ironworkers Reaching For The Sky
by STEPHEN NESSEN for NPR
April 4, 2012 from WNYC

http://www.npr.org/2012/04/04/150008075/fewer-tribal-ironworkers-reaching-for-the-sky

Since the 1900s, the country's most iconic bridges and skyscrapers have been put up by men who risked life and limb to connect steel beams hundreds of feet in the sky. Ironworkers come from all backgrounds, but a small Indian reserve outside Montreal has supplied the U.S. with a proud lineage of Mohawk ironworkers.

But with fewer Mohawks going into the trade, the tradition may be on the wane.

Striding across a steel beam 26 stories in the sky, a lean ironworker grabs the corner column and pulls himself up. What could someday be a corner office on 55th Street in Manhattan is now nothing but open air. It's windless and the sun is bright, a perfect day for putting up steel.

"Like Houdini, he gets up there and disappears," one of the workers says of Kaniehtakeron Martin. "Poof!"

In 2 1/2 hours, the crew lays 68 pieces of steel.

"I'm a connector in the raising gang. It's my job to climb the steel and erect the iron," says Martin, or Geggs as he's known. "It's my job to put the building up, basically. The only thing mechanized about it is the crane."

Martin is a fourth-generation Mohawk ironworker from a reserve just south of Montreal. At about 5 feet 8 inches, the 35-year-old is one of the smaller guys on the site, and with 15 years of experience, one of the smartest.

"A lot of people, they watch us, they see what we do and they ask me if I'm crazy, but it's fun. You gotta love what you do," he says. "They always often ask me, 'Are you afraid of heights?' Naw, I'm not. A lot of people are, but I'm one of them who isn't."

The Long Commute

At the peak in the 1950s, there were as many as 800 Mohawks living in New York City. Now, Martin is one of about 200.

I don't think it's that bad. They can always change the design even after this is built. The PA will have to learn the hard way as this is not how you attract people to a tower.

I don't like that plaza revision. It makes the building appear to be even more closed off than it does now with the "bunkerish" base.
Where before the plan was to keep it lively, with people hanging around it looks like that will be discouraged. But this could be more
Durst than Port Authority.

There is something fishy about that wall. I bet it is for security reasons, not cost. I mean, why remove a staircase and put up a wall otherwise? Also, it looks like they put up some kind of glass barrier around the plaza. Perhaps to protect against a blast?

Im pretty sure glass wouldn't protect against a blast from a bomb but I'am curious why they redesigned and what the glass is for.

The 1WTC West Plaza redesign is a definite improvement. Now it separates the sidewalk and the tower plaza so as to maintain the movement of the streetwalkers while not encouraging 1,000 Europeans to sit on the stairs. 1WTC is not a museum and does not need to encourage loitering.

I know already since it will be so tall it will give an even greater affect as to the feeling how height up you are. I at first didn't want to cross the bridge since it was pretty long. I just wanted to walk the bridge a bit down to get farther into DUMBO to go to Brooklyn Bridge Park (my favorite place in the entire city) and snap pictures there. I decided not to however because it was a nice day out and in the end it was worth it.

No, the blue netting was pulled up to surround the recent steel construction. New black netting will fill in shortly. Facade work will continue being placed in rows on top of the existing facade as soon as internal concrete core, floor decking, stair wells and fireproofing move up and out of the way.

I think he means the black netting above the glass, "facade" in this case referring to the glass.

This is a bit off-subject, but what are the plans for the sphere? Will it be moved back to the WTC (the memorial, I'd think) or remain where it is?

1) There is no black netting there. That is open space. The poster above was correct.

2) The Sphere will be moved to Liberty Park in 2014. It will be a block away from the Memorial.

I believe that when all is said and done, the whole WTC is going to be gleaming at sunsets and sunrises. It will be a sight to behold.

Definitely. And, God forbid, if something happens to the new one, in 30 years they'll be complaining about the same 'problems' in the 'new wtc' of that time. Again, god forbid.

The glass already gleams. Look at the pictures I took from early morning. The glare was so bright that if I kept looking at it I would have been blind. It actually hurt my eyes so I took a picture and moved away. I am glad in how it turned out though even though I wasn't willing to stay too long.

RoadCruiser, your picture of the building from the little harbor in front of the winter garden, you didn't have a tripod did you?

The 1WTC West Plaza redesign is a definite improvement. Now it separates the sidewalk and the tower plaza so as to maintain the movement of the streetwalkers while not encouraging 1,000 Europeans to sit on the stairs. 1WTC is not a museum and does not need to encourage loitering.

It's not a "museum", but the purpose of that design was to encourage people to "hang around", creating life outside and around the building. They didn't want to create a sterile plaza like you find around many buildings, and certainly didn't want it as dead as it was around the original buildings. Furthermore, it's a tourist attraction, as that side and the entrance will be the only one specifically for the observation deck.

8+ hands on deck at WTC observatory

Companies are lining up for a chance to run the observation deck at the top of 1 World Trade Center. The Post has learned that at least eight of 10 groups are expected to respond to a request for proposal by May 7, with an operator likely to be chosen over the summer. The winner will take over the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors of the building and be able to run restaurants as part of their operations.

The Durst Organization, which has partnered with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to operate and manage the 104-story tower, will be reviewing the responses. Durst declined to comment.

The 100th floor observatory is expected to become a cash cow for the building as millions of visitors are already making pilgrimages to the Sept. 11 memorial pools and eventually a museum. Prior to 2001, the previous WTC observatory had 2 million visitors. Public restaurants will eventually open on the 101st and 102nd floors.
