Long time follow of SSP, finally decided to register. I've followed the rebuilding of the WTC from the beginning on this site and others. You guys do a great job with all the photo's and info back and forth. Last night's show on Discovery just put it over the top. That was AWESOME!!! Looking forward to taken my girls down to the site within a few weeks to see the progress in person, just like my dad did with me when the Twins went up almost 40 years ago. Life Long NY'er ...NYC is home now anfd forever. Great to see the Trade Center reaching for the skies again.

Here's why both I Love and Hate YouTube:

There are full episodes of The Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero all over YouTube, which is great, but it's broken up in a way that the titles make no sense. Because there are like five Part 1's. I have no idea which one is the actual beginning of the series. I guess I'll just wait until it airs here.

Meanwhile...

There's a new mobile crane on site today. I wonder what it's for?

Yeah, I thought it was awesome that the two different sides were always in a race. I which I knew which crane was which so we could see who won each crane jump. :D

And seeing the guys working on the tower made it all that much more "real." The two ironworkers, in particular, were a couple of goofballs.

The counterweights that arrived yesterday were for that crane, which is there to take down the tower crane that's next to the north pool. You can see the jib already on the ground in your first picture.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted... However, on close inspection, I can't see where those counterweights are. Also, now with Irene bearing down on NYC... Is that mobile crane going to be removed in time? Otherwise, it looks like a potential hazard to the curtainwall.

More than likely they're checking to make sure the pins that hold cables and lattice sections are all tight and have their retaining pins in them in preparation for the hurricane. Nice shot though of the iron workers out on the boom. I thought i noticed a guy on the crane on the side of the building as well. I'm sure they are lynching things down for the expected winds to come.

At World Trade Center, a Rush to Secure Cranes

By Andrew Grossman
August 26, 2011

At the World Trade Center construction site in Lower Manhattan, crews were readying 10 tower cranes for high winds ahead of Hurricane Irene’s arrival.

“We are not concerned about flood risk,” said Chris Ward, executive director of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the site. “We are concerned about high winds, as it relates to the tower cranes in particular.”

The cranes, some of which are being used to build 1 World Trade Center, will be either secured with cables or left to swing free depending on their location, Ward said. The tower is now 90 stories high, on its way to becoming the tallest building in New York City.

Well, it would take a surge of 10-12 feet to flood parts of the WTC. That's within the realm of possibility here. Though, the advantage of having exposed substructure in a lot of places is that you can hose the salt off everything, pump out the pools, and let the rest evaporate without worrying about mold.

:previous: Not exactly. It's why most channel's now have watermark logos in the lower right corner of their programs. If the majority of an image is of another's work that is copyright infringement. A picture of the room with the TV, and discovery channel on, would not be. If Discovery Channel really cared to; they would have a VERY strong case to have Carlos's images removed as they don't fall into fair public use like satire or the work being older than 70s old.

I'm sure they're fine; worst case all they could do is a cease and desist. They wouldn't win a suit for loss of income since he's not profiting of them.

Now that one crane is gone, they can just let the other one weather-vane in the wind without fear of it hitting the other's boom.

I wouldn't have thought the crane boom removal was necessary. I figure wind load for towers on occasion and it seems like that crane should be rated for way more than any hurricane breeze could cause.
I considered the remote possibility that I'm simply not as smart as I thought I was, but dismissed it as ridiculous.

^^^ High winds in Taipei tore the tower crane off Taipei 101. I'm sure you're right, but they just cannot take any chances.

Aug 27, 2011, 3:52 AM
As I said before, they have to let the cranes "Weather-vane" during high winds. They are strong enough to withstand the winds but normally there is one crane on top of a building. When you have two in such close proximity, they can't both just swing in the wind, because one will hit the other. That is why they took the boom off only one crane.

Yesterday I've watched all parts of that video RISING Rebuilding Ground Zero.(thanks for sharing screen shoots here) It's really hard and risky work there...But those builders really proud of what they do. Now I'm 18, my university of architecture just around the corner and the video like this really inspires to be a part of something huge, to love a job which you could be proud of the achieved results.
Can't wait to see the finish of the construction! :) Damn, it's gonna be cool to visit that museum of 9/11 and get the feel how was there at that day...

I thought they'd tie the booms down, but I guess weathervaning is a way to keep the crane aspect you want to the wind. You could make the windward side either the cab or the boom depending on the boom angle.
I assume the cab will be the lee side since that's the way the boomless one will have to be.

Condé Nast liberates ground zero

By Michael Gross
August 28, 2011

...when developer Larry Silverstein—who controlled the entire complex before the attacks—was asked how the 10-year logjam in rebuilding the site had been broken, he replied, “The key was Condé Nast.”

The Newhouse family's magazine company was lured downtown by its current landlord in Times Square, The Durst Organization's Douglas Durst. Their linked interests in 1 WTC were revealed in May. Durst bought a $100 million stake in the 1,776-foot-high, 3 million-square-foot tower; Condé Nast agreed to become its anchor tenant, renting the 20th through the 41st floors for 25 years for $1.9 billion.

Downtown has been heralded as the future of cool before, but it's cramped, dark and lacking in at least two Condé Nast prerequisites—high-end boutiques and chic restaurants. That may explain another concession to the Condé crew: 1 WTC is being redesigned to accommodate what Businessweek describes as “an enormous exhaust duct” for the company's kitchen.

Great pictures! If you look at pictures of the old WTC towers, their corners were slightly edged off so that the light caught them so as to accentuate their shape/height. The new One WTC has expanded on this, note the angular shapes. This will make for very nice picturesque views when the glass is all installed and the building complete, such as in sunrise/sunsets.

That infographic seems to say there will be an observation deck at 1,362 ft? As I understand it there's only supposed to be an indoor observation deck several floors lower then that...

marshall
Aug 28, 2011, 6:18 PM
I would like clarification on this too. Will there be an outdoor observation deck, or only an indoor one? I was lucky enough to visit the old WTC observation deck on Tower 2 in August 2000 and it was not a clear day but the view and feeling of being outside so high was still amazing.

Roadcruiser1

One World Trade Center will only have an indoor observation deck. They tried to study to see if it was feasible to put an open air observation deck, but the price tag was way too much.

these photos are amazing!
but made me notice that the memorial park/even when the entire WTC complex is rebuilt, there is still a huge presence of "emptiness" left in the skyline/in comparison with the rest of lower manhattan... the hole left that the memorials encompass is HUGE!
makes you realize how massive the World Trade Center site was, and how big of a portion of Lower Manhattan it took up.

but i think it's important to have that feel of "emptiness" where the memorials are, so that the past is not forgotten, and the beasts that once stood there...

Carlos, glad you are back safe to your place.
The Boom of the other crane is not yet back post #15887

Seems like they make more progress everyday. I still think they should add an outdoor observation deck sometime in the future :)

Sometime earlier next year...it's hard to say because a lot depends on weather. They've lost a lot time over the past year to weather delays.

It really is looking nice! It is a shame they did not build two of these - how tall is it at the moment?

What's the Art Deco building in the foreground of the third photo? Sorry about quoting all of the pictures. It won't work for me otherwise. I've never had that problem before..
