Zen will know for sure, but it'll make it look 1400+ feet I imagine.

NYguy, any idea where within the WFC the underground concourse connecter will be? My guess is somewhere in the back of the Winter Garden behind the marble steps, but I haven’t found any indication anywhere in that vicinity.

Isn't there just a blank wall facing east on the first floor under the stairs/platform of the Winter Garden? I could see them putting in a few escalator banks there.

It's supposed to be on West St, just to the north of the Wintergarden (on the outside).

There is a ring track just above the parapet that can be seen in the rendering of the top of the tower. There well be three units riding on it with horizontal telescoping arms.

That makes sense.

That blank wall houses mens/womens restrooms. I could see them modifying the stairs that used to lead up to the north bridge though. Instead, they could lead down to the east-west connector.

I think the 18000 has two more pieces to go, but they just finished this bracket.

so that's the final design for the top eh? Not the ring, good I think it looks better, and makes the roof about ,,or at least look 1400 feet.

Apparently the offices which where supposed t rise to the 88th floor, r just shy of 1150 feet, will now rise to the 90th or so because they will probably no longer house communications equipment there?

I could be wrong though

Ah yes now I remember. When I was there I walked around trying to find out what the big blank wall was and then I saw the restrooms. Must be some restrooms. I'm not sure how I feel about the entrance being outside of the Winter Garden. I assume they will be building an enclosed connection?

This crane is insane. I hope it's still there next summer for my next visit.

Quick question.... does anyone know how tall the structure on top of the roof will be?? Not the spire... but the structure at its base. I'm curious because if that structure has the same perimeter as the top of the building, it'll actually make the building appear taller than 1368 ft.

If someone could let me know when they get the chance..

Thanks....[/B]

The top platform of the communications ring is going to be 1,401' 5" above the lobby floor.

I also found some info on why several official sites state the floor count as 109. The roof is 105, but then they keep numbering. The cooling tower catwalks are 106, then the 3 communications rings 107, 108, 109.

So it'll be like the roof is at 1400 pretty much then, sweet deal.

This may sound like a silly question but what exactly is a broadcast floor, is there just equipment there or do people work there too?

Does anyone know why they might no longer use 89 and 90 as broadcasting floors?

If anyone knows I'm curious..

The 89th and 90th floors were intended to house TV broadcast equipment and a small staff of techs.

Three feet of re-enforced concrete. Six feet at the lobby.

PS: the Twins had two sheets of 5/8th dry wall .

That's the thing about the Twins. Most people assume that the dust cloud was pulverized concrete when in reality it was all gypsum wall board and a tiny amount of concrete from the floor slabs. The way the PA took advantage of that new fire code in the 60s was absurd.

Am I the only one who doesn't like that the base rises outward and then there's the awkward angle where the rest of the building starts, and even though the rest of the building is technically rectangular from whichever angle you look at it, its shape creates the optical illusion that it tapers again inward.

There's something about that that bothers me, it's like the base is a toilet seat and the rest of the building is sitting on it... Why couldn't they have made the base perfectly straight and rectangular - more straightforward, more stylish. The tapering outward just makes it look awkward.

Anyone else feel this way...?

Also, I read on wikipedia that there are rumors it might not get finished by 2018...?? Is this true? And if so, is there a chance for a design change?

I assure you what you read on wikipedia is inaccurate. The current construction plan by the Port Authority is accurate therefore the Tower should be done by 2013 unless more delays pile up but I don't think that will happen. The rooftop will top-out in Fall 2011 and the communication ring along with the spire should be added on in the months following that so most likely by 2012 the building will fully top-out at 1,776 Feet.

No, those are just rumors. The PA's schedule is the most accurate timeframe right now, which is scheduled for completion in 2013.

The tower's base is 200 feet by 200 feet, which is a square. The top of the building actually tapers again inward, forming a diamond of a square. The core of the building at the base is shaped like a rectangle.

This is the rendering of the 1WTC without the rest of the site(keep in mind that the rendering of the site and the rendering of 1WTC alone are totally different.)

The original towers had their footprints chamfered slightly as well. They probably wanted to bring that back.

They can't change the design now that the tower is rising. That would only delay it to probably 2018.

Really? I'm not talking about the chamfered corners, the original WTC had a slight chamfer on each corner which ran all the way up, that's true but that's not what I was referring to.

The base is indeed a square on the ground but it rises slightly outward in each direction, doesn't it? In other words each side of the base forms an angle with the ground that isn't 90 degrees, but slightly sharper. Or am I incorrect, is that just an illusion created by the chamfered corners? (I'm talking about the sides, not the chamfered corners, which clearly do rise at an angle)

And then you're saying the rest of the building tapers in as well? My impression (probably wrong) was that the area of the square where the base meets the main body is the the same as that of the square on top, it's just rotated 45 degrees. Or is this incorrect, is the square on top actually smaller?

Please, let me know. Thanks :) Sorry if that was too convoluted.

As long as I know the base is just chamfered but doesn't actually rise outward at a sharp angle then my crazy OCD brain will be at peace :D

It's an illusion, the chamfered corners are the only part that rise at an angle like you said. I actually had to double check this. haha. Good question though.

The bottom square is larger. The red arrow points to the sides that rise vertically, the yellow arrows to tapered sides. The red square drawn is the bottom, the yellow the top of the building, as seen from above. Hope this gives you a perspective :)

:previous:

Wow, they should have called it Optical Illusion Tower :D

OKAY, I think I finally figured it out. Thank you both of you.

So yes, the base is perpendicular to the ground, just the chamfered corners rise at an angle, adding to the enigmatic nature of the building.

The same goes for the main body - the four sides rising off of the base sides rise straight up at a perpendicular angle from the ground, forming a single continuous straight line from the ground all the way to the top - so if you're looking at the building from the "right" angle which is if you're directly facing one of the four BASE SIDES, you will see a perfectly rectangular structure. You'll see this:

http://glasssteelandstone.com/Images/US/NY/NYC/WTC/FreedomTower3-001.jpg

However, if go to the side and face a CORNER, then you'll see a tampered structure - both the base will appear to be rising at slight angle, because of the chamfered corners, AND the main body will appear to be very tampered - the top will actually appear 50% smaller than the base.

And as you move from the side to the corner you'll get everything in between, from slightly to highly tampered. The pic that BStules and Blind_Guardian posted is a good example of it appearing slightly tampered from a slight angle. If you rotate it to the right a little bit it'll appear perfectly rectangular like the one I posted.

So, OKAY, I get all this. BUT, I'm still a little confused, because I've definitely come across renderings that are supposed to be of the final design, which appear very odd, and where the top square appears as big if not bigger than the base square. Here's an example:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9053/examplek.png

(sorry I printscreened that one)

In this one, I don't know if it's the angle that's playing some sort of a crazy optical illusion on me again, but the chamfered side on top appears just as big, if not bigger than the base side, and also just as perpendicular to the ground, when it should be 50% smaller and tampered + on top of that the one next to it, which should be the same size, definitely appears much smaller...? It does, doesn't it? So the top really doesn't look like a square to me. Also, I really think I should be able to see more of the base, namely the left side on that rendering...?

I'm also pretty sure I've seen some renderings where the top looked as big as the bottom, and from certain angles it almost appeared bigger. I think those might have been earlier renderings where they thought they would have the top square rotated at 45 degrees, but still be the same size as the bottom (so they'd be juxtaposed and the same size if looked from above ), so the building would look rectangular from ALL angles, as all sides would rise straight up perpendicular to the ground. But then they decided to have the above square be 50% smaller and fit into the base one when rotated, so that's what they did. Can anyone confirm if this is at all correct? Maybe I'm wrong about that, maybe its just an optical illusion I saw again.

Well anyways, I think it would have made more sense to have both squares at the top and bottom be equal in size and have the structure appear rectangular from all angles - this way it would have been even more enigmatic IMO, and it would have physically had more space. A lot more actually.

I don't know, it's still the most enigmatic and mysterious tower I've seen. I think that's what they were going for, so mission accomplished.

Man, that was a long post...

North Crane Jump Imminent? A couple of the black sections which were on the ground near Bigger Red have been moved out of view.

Meanwhile new steel has gone up over the tracks in the extreme SW corner of the bathtub over the rail tracks, including a diagonal cross beam today, with a lot of beams on the ground just to the south of the southwest corner. So it looks like, at long last, the entire length of "the hole" along West St. is to be filled.

This is why I knew the tower sections were not for either of the cranes on the Tower One site. This also applies to Tower 4 sense DCM is doing the erecting there too.

http://www.dcmerectors.com/tower-crane_video.htm run time is 6:22 and worth every second.

NOTE: you must allow the ActiveX add on to load in order to watch the video.

I guess you missed this. But it does not mean the north crane well not jump soon, just that they don't need to add sections to jump it.

Having the top square equal in size would be impossible unless the sides that I had drawn with red arrow were tapered outwards. Also, the side with the yellow arrow would still taper inwards. So the building would not be vertical from any angle you looked. Here's a rough idea of that:

So it looks like, at long last, the entire length of "the hole" along West St. is to be filled.

That red crane assembling that space never moves all day in the earthcam, and yet steel keeps appearing. Weird...:sly:

@Yankee: That was the rendering I was talking about. They just wanted to show the site's enirety, but for some strange reason, ended up twisting 1WTC into that shape. Probably to fit in the picture, I guess.

The angle that the tower looks like it's on, is actually perpendicular to both Vesey and Fulton streets, and 90 feet away from West Street, which is the one with the angle. If you look at the American Express tower across the street, it is also set at an angle away from West Street.

PS: Oh, they made the Manitowoc longer? Probably either to finish the base or to retain it's title as ''big red''.:haha:

The reason is that the subway is in use during the day and they shut down service at night so the crane can install the beams. I saw this happen a late night evening or two ago and it makes sense to do it that way. Or possibly crush a train full of passengers with a fallen beam and make headline news for an entire year, ya know.

Can anyone confirm operational hours for that part of the subway?

Well those are the PATH trains that run under the FT..so techinically not the subway but I believe that they run until like 11 I check right now...

Alright, yeah service is from 6:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. on the weekends..but that's for the green line that runs between Hoboken and the WTC..there's also a red line that runs between Newark and the WTC that runs 24 hours and 7 days a week..Not sure what this means..Maybe they run under different areas of the WTC..?

Also I have a question for the people that post photos up here. I take photos down at the WTC about once or twice a week and have been doing so for a decent amount time now..I've been wanting to post them up here but I was wondering if photobucket (or whatever sites you guys use) have some type of auto-watermarking function..don't know if this exists but I just don't want to have to manually put watermarks on each and every photo. It's not that my photos are amazing or anything it's just that I'm not to comfortable with other people taking them without my permission..you never know what can happen..Is this possible or do I just have to deal? Thanks.

Don't worry, the other buildings will only make 1WTC look taller, GS is the same height as 7WTC, and even Beekman is 100 feet shorter than tower 4 in that picture. There's not a building even proposed in NYC that will make 1WTC look anything but incredibly tall.

Almost it's 1350 ft with the antenna spire. The Area is 2,530,000 sq ft.

One World Trade Center is 2,600,000 sq ft.

I really like the design of 2 WTC. That first pic looks like it's from a scifi movie. Have you ever thought that if somebody from 1980s came to 2015 and saw this they would be like wth?? what happened to the twin towers? Of course we'd all know. I just thought its interesting how things change.

Question about [RIGHT]the ring on top of "One World Trade Center". The smaller circular shapes facing outwards on the ring are communications equipment correct? I cannot tell be looking at the pics, but I always thought they are part of the antenna and not lighting. One other question is will the base of he building change lighting pattern at night or stay a brilliant white light?

Towers 1 - 3 are roughly the same size. The FT's roughly 2.6, T2 roughtly 2.8 (including retail), T3 roughtly 2.5. Even tower 4 is listed at a combined 2.3msf though probably only about 1.8msf of that is office.

BStyles - from another board - the reason the crane in the SW corner doesn't appear to move is that the steel over the tracks is being placed from midnight to 4 AM with the tracks de-energized. The diagonal beam that I thought had been placed during the morning actually was placed that previous night, in re-looking at the first picture I used to make the comparison observation, the beam was already there, it was just hard to see in the shadow.

Cops stalling Ground Zero rebuild

By BRAD HAMILTON and REUVEN BLAU
September 27, 2009

A nitpicking cop crackdown on concrete at Ground Zero is costing taxpayers millions and snarling construction at the already behind-schedule Freedom Tower and other structures at the site, cement suppliers say.

Cops harass their mixing trucks with inspections that take so long, the concrete starts to harden and can't be used, the firms say....

"I built Trump World Tower, which is 92 stories, in 18 months," said Donald Trump. "I've done four floors in a week. What's happening at the Freedom Tower is a terrible situation."

The financial district of Lower Manhattan is a relatively small (compared to Midtown) neighborhood, and before 9/11, whenever you were down there, you felt immanently close
to the World Trade Center. Hard to explain, but I have that feeling again whenever I'm down there. There's a sense of something huge going on.
