I keep thinking that zensteeldude would have liked the spire now, because they aren't covering all that beautiful steel up.

Wow, look at that glass go! Looking amazing! I sure will miss seeing 1 WTC under construction when it's done... I didn't come along until the mid-80s so I missed seeing the construction of the twins by 15 years. It means a lot to me to have been able to visit NYC and see it under construction. It'll really be something else when it finally does open and we can all go visit the observatory. :D (but man, I would have given anything to be able to visit the outdoor deck at the original 2 WTC! I imagine that was quite the neat experience!)

for us newer people, was zen a forumer on here?

His username was Zensteeldude, he was an industry insider and had all the prints for 1WTC and the PATH station. Died in a car crash in April of 2011. He is now an honored member.

I think its because the view of One WTC from that angle resembles the view of the old WTC where the north tower mostly blocked the view of the south tower.

TOWER OF HATE: Racist and sexist slur-filled graffiti covers inside of new World Trade Center

That kind of stuff is scrawled in public restrooms, high schools, bars, public transport, parks, abandoned buildings and nearly all other freely accessible locations all over the nation. The best way to deal with these kinds of things is fine the vandals when they are caught, but otherwise there should be a policy of ignoring them and quietly cleaning the mess up. A news article in a major paper however will just encourage more vandalism since they now know that somebody got mad enough to write about it.

The new One World Trade Center requires no identical sibling to draw stares or smiles. Although we won’t see it whole for another year, my heart lifts from every vantage point — from narrow Fulton Street, where it thunders skyward beyond the shabby old storefronts; from the Brooklyn Heights Esplanade, revealing its prideful place in the lower Manhattan panorama; and from beneath the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo, a perspective that invites the Frank Gehry-designed 8 Spruce St. into a surprise pas de deux.

Slash (/) 21 Ann St. Yes. It has maybe 10-12 stories to go, I believe. From this angle, 115 Nassau will be next to it, and a bit taller.

Good article, thanks for posting.

If One World Trade Center conveys a mood, it’s tranquility. Despite its much greater height, it overwhelms nothing around it — not the memorial at its feet, nor the 1980s-vintage World Financial Center towers to the west, nor 1930s Art Deco spires to the south.

It belongs. But it isn’t a matter of merely fitting in like “contextual” projects: One World Trade Center doesn’t mimic its neighbors at all.

I agree here, 1WTC is a world class tower.

The wonder is that One World Trade Center came through the chaos at all — and much, much better than once seemed likely or logical.

Sometimes the impossible dream that is New York City comes with a happy ending we don’t quite deserve.

We really should be happy we didn't get the Libeskind design. And yes, the spire and base are a mess but it could have been so much worse.

I totally disagree! If you look at the renderings, 2 world trade isn't quite as dominant as its height suggests due to how the top of the tower tapers. In the end it will be a perfect companion to 1WTC along with towers 4 and 3. If anything it will enhance the dominance of 1WTC.

the spire and base are a mess but it could have been so much worse.

Well, that much can be said for any tower. But this isn't just any old tower for me. That antenna/spire will always be the disgrace of the rebuilding to me.
They will have proved the critics of this rebuilding right.

1 wtc will lose some of its dominence over lower manhattan because of the other two wtc supertalls but it will maintain its dominence over the wtc itself being the

They will work together as a group dominating lower Manhattan.

I have always said that we should be patient and wait until 1WTC is finished before judging it's impact on the skyline and height..In my opinion, (and I think the upper glass cladding going on now supports this), is that the tower will look much taller once all the glass reaches the roof, and it streamlines in appearance! Also the antenna will offset the main tower and also enhance it's height appearance, so in other words the best is yet to come visually! Once the glass reaches the roof and the antenna is finished we will truly see how giant 1WTC will be.

I agree that 2wtc and 3wtc will enhance and compliment 1wtc's height. Visually, the discerning eye will follow 2wtc and 3wtc, to the main attraction at the site, which is of course 1wtc. And to say nothing of the tons and tons of people who will be standing in line to visit the tower's observation deck once it opens! I also think something that doesn't get as much attention but deserves it is the fabulous new transportation hub that is being built. This will truly be an architectural and visual marvel. And unlike the old subway system beneath the twin towers which were buried, the transportation hub adds even more visual life to the site.

Basically I am an optimist and I think the new world trade center will be as good if not better than the old one, maybe it will take a few years, but I predict 1wtc will be a tourist hub as soon as it opens!

I think the new WTC works even better with the NY skyline as a whole than the old WTC did! 1 WTC's spire, it's taper, and gentle elegance really mesh well with the other gems of the skyline, like the ESB & Chrysler building! The twins were nice, but they always seemed a bit disjointed and out of place, but this tower actually works better in a more refined way, while still being plenty big, I think!

The original WTC was built in an emptier skyline. A lower Manhattan skyline still trying to kinda 'find itself'. A lot of New Yorkers hated the WTC for years until the 93 bombing then they were kinda accepted by the people. I do think the new One WTC (and the rest of the new complex) are more modern looking and fit the other skyscrapers that have been built since the 1960s around the site.

One WTC has grown on me watching it grow on here. Originally I just wanted the original towers rebuilt but the new towers would be a better memorial than just rebuilding the original towers and basically covering over the tragedy like it never happened.

You can tell that the first photo is back when the ESB antenna was taller at 1472 ft versus the current 1454 ft...

It was a big deal when I was a kid as it made the ESB "taller" than the Sears Tower which back then was listed as 1454 ft (per lowest entrance)

Written in honor of the Freedom Tower...

http://www.downtownexpress.com/you-stand-so-tall-now/

YOU STAND SO TALL NOW

By Victor J. Papa

You stand so tall now, rising up, emerging discernibly.

But why appear so reticent?

Is it mournful memories of the perished?

Those sorrowfully wrenched from us.

Those ordinary souls, intending only an ordinary day, instead enduring a vile holocaust, or

Perhaps reticence is really reverence.

Peerless were those silver towers that so marked our famous city.

And within her walls beloved souls who suffered God-less, cowardly evil.

They, cherished in our hearts, they too stand tall, venerated and palpable in our memories.

Or perhaps reticence is really prudence.

Borne as you were from a nation’s great tragedy, you were conceived to embody a nation’s memory,

exemplifying honor and virtue.

You stand so tall now, rising up, emerging discernibly.

You are ascending, assuming your esteemed place among the luminaries.

You will soar, still higher among other noble, timeless pinnacles alongside you.

They shall adorn and shall still pierce the sky above the harbor’s river,

but obsequious beneath your heights and your shadow.

You are not reticent, nor do you appear vindictive.

Your graceful form, which eschews cold, piercing lines, poises a gentle presence.

You are not reticent, nor do you appear strident.

Your blue elegance conveys a humble triumph for a city to claim.

You rise so tall now. Robust! Prominent!

A serene recompense for a mournful city.

You will become eminent in history, exuding resilience and hope, a sure symbol of progress.

And a perpetual cenotaph of a great tragedy that once shook the world and broke our hearts.

You are a sapphire; graceful, tranquil, with a lovely robe to behold.

Your crown will pronounce you regal.

Awwww. That was a really beautiful poem. :) I'm not much of a crier (and I'm a female!) and that poem got me all misty-eyed.

Patriotizzy, NYC really is something else, isn't it? I understand that feeling all too well -- I experienced the same feeling on my very first visit, back in 2006. It's such a beautiful, powerful city. It just sucks you right in and you never want to leave. I know I don't, every time I visit! I went 5 1/2 years between my first and second visits, and I never want to go that long between visits ever again. You're bound to have a great time every time you visit :)

The first time I got to visit the WTC site, it was still a hole in the ground (The new 7 WTC had been built, but hadn't yet opened). The second time I visited was right when 1 WTC hit 1000 feet (I think it was just past 80 stories at the time). I will never forget getting off the subway, walking up to street level and just seeing it right there. Got me all choked up too!

Here are a few Post 9/11 pre New WTC photos, I found the other day,
I thought you guys might like to see how far this project has come in 5 years.

I took these on 10/1/08, its the first time I have ever been to NYC, I planned to do the whole Statue of Liberty Ellis Island tourist thing and take a ferry to Manhattan....but we ran out of time and I never did mke it to the island of Manhattan....someday I will, its been a few years and I have not had a chance to get back. Kind of surreal to look at photos of me and my Wife smiling in front of an empty skyline, 7 years after 9/11 happened.

5 years after our trip it's still being rebuilt built, with 2 more buildings in limbo.
I hope at least for the Families sake the 9/11 museum is at least finished in our lifetime.

These photos are what led me to SSP, I used to check B. Maule's page out at phillyskyline.com for philly construction updates and found you guys from there.
I was wondering what the big red cranes were doing at ground zero when I got the photos back, I got to see it rise thanks to you guys! Thanks.

Not the best quality to enlarge....we had an old 1st gen digital camera at the time.

PZelda and sterlippo1, thanks a lot. NYC is the wonder city of the world, without a doubt. Hoping to quickly save money to go back during the summer.

No, look further down toward the enterance, at the very bottom of the base, there is something there that appears black along the base.

Do you have mac or windows?
If windows, click 'prnt sc' in the top right corner of your keyboard
THen go to paint and click 'ctrl+v' then click the circle and circle it. After you do that click 'ctrl+a' then click 'ctrl+c' then go to imgur.com and click 'ctrl+v' and then upload. Copy the URL of the image and paste it here

Perfect! Look along the right and left hand sides of the base. There is some black material on the base at the very bottom, at the ground.

Guess we'll know soon enough if this is the very beginning of the base cladding.

Wow,nice catch Chris and Hudson. It looks extremely reflective,so I presume it's definitely base cladding.

Also not to sure what's going on around the base but from earthcam I can see they have blocked off part of Fulton by the base for some reason. Any ideas?
