Freedom tower is taller than the old WTC by roof height, spire, and pinnacle.

no its has the same roof hight as one world trade center did and its spire is the only thing that makes it really tall i wish they made this building 2001 feet but im happy with what :)

I think the whole design looks cluttered and unoriginal. I would have preferred the original twin towers rebuilt as they were, but with higher quality materials and some kind of high tech emergency evac system. Heck even TWO "Freedom Towers" of the same height right next to each other would have been better than all those shorter slanted roof buildings (despite it's intended sunlight objective- will it really be that noticeable anyways?). Still can't believe this design got accepted.

Have either of you actually kept up with this project? The newest (under construction) design is dramatically different from the picture you posted, and will be an incredible complex.

I don't understand the sentiment of "big towers spaced far apart" - these are huge towers packed tightly together. Say what you want about the architecture, but the density leaves little to be desired.

This tower is the same height as 1 World Trade Center (North Tower) at 1368 feet at roof level. They list the South Tower at 1363 feet. So it will be like having 1 of the old towers rebuilt. The new tower two (200 Greenwich Street) is listed at 1350 at top of sphere. Thats pretty tall, only 13 feet shorter than the old tower. So theres no complaints from me about this final approved buildings. People complaining about the new freedom tower should go back to all the other proposals that were submitted. I think its pretty good compared to some of those proposals.

Thanks for the pictures. In one of them, you can see just on the other side of that big concrete wall where the underground concourse's beams are, that they have started steel construction for the memorial.

People tend to forget we're only talking 16 acres. When one looks out at the site from the Winter Garden atrium, it's actually hard to imagine how all the towers and other structures will fit.

Good to actually see some pictures. Maybe with bringing this forum back to the rest of us it will reinvigorate it. Keep the pictures coming. In the past there was a picture maybe like once every 2 weeks or so.

People, dont start that crap about wanting the original towers back. People would never ever work there in a million years if they rebuilt them so it will never ever happen so drop it.

NYC4Life

Agree, the memory of what took place there would only be brought back to life with a rebuilt Twin Towers. Family members who lost a relative would never want to see them rebuilt.

Could we just delete their posts and pretend they never existed? Such talk today is tantamount to trolling.

In addition, those TwinHippie websites that think "big things will happen"--well, it may have comedic value.:lmao: Maybe you could find a way to make an Internet meme out of it--remember the Iraqi Information Minister?--but such material doesn't belong in any of these forums.

This is strictly about the Freedom Tower (and the rest of the WTC as it comes along). Just keep to that and hope that the timetable is more optimistic when it comes out later this month.

That is one incredibly complicated looking site.

It sure is. When you factor in the fact that the site isn't just some run-of-the-mill megaproject but is worked on by several developers, owners, public figures etc, not counting the dozens of subcontractors for various projects within, it's easier to understand the delays at hand.

I just saw the site yesterday. All of my NYC family and friends, locals and lifelong NYers are embarassed at the whole mess. The rebuilding has been a disaster on all levels, from the recovery that was not complete, the demolition of Deutsche Bank, the design process, the politics, the subway/PATH components, the budget, the egos, the painfully slowness, the delays, the blaming & finger pointing, and around and around the circle goes.

I agree with them. The rebuilding process is an embarassment. I overheard some Brits at the site saying "that's it?" yesterday on the bridge that you walk over to WFC on.

Yes it is. However; the current MSG is being renovated instead of being razed as it currently stands.

As for the 4 towers, only the Freedom Tower has above grade construction. Estimates currently have the other 3 towers to reach street level by spring 2009.

But I doubt they will. But Im pretty sure the general public will come up with nicknames for them, becuse if I recall properly, North Tower and South Tower were nicknames given to the originals by the people of NYC?

I belive that the freedom tower and WTC,2,3,and 4 should be droped for the ground zero site and instead the 574m (1883ft) WTC Twin towers 2 disign should be built instead. The freedom tower design should be moved to hudson yards or the msg instead because it is a nice design but just not strong enough alone to be the new world trade center.

WOW! Those were some fantastic pictures!:worship: From the looks of things it would appear the south core of FT is about 2 or 3 stories above street level(??)

When will the north core start to catch up with it southern twin? Also, anyone know when the next delivery of steel beams for FT will arrive? when will the steel start to rise higher?

Progress.....sweet progress!

(Looks like the media is overblowing the lack of progress at the WTC site? )

Well once that stump starts to rise above street level, it's going to grow fast.

The 1 subway line runs through the site, but taking the PATH trains gives you a glimpse of the activities. Much of the PATH tunnel leading into and out of the WTC station is partly exposed.

I'll take either one of the above, they are both very bold and powerful as a symbol of commercial/economic dominance.

Usually I like Fosters designs but the above is just ugly, even with the spectacular sunset he is using to enhance the look. It is crooked, like some twisted abomination that would be forged in the mind of a Leibeskind or Gherry.

Yes, I agree, that tower above is just terrible. It reminds me of the 80s for some reason which was full of horrid styles lol

From the construction pictures it is not clear that there IS going to be a north core looking like the south core. The construction activitythere appears different. Maybe the north area will have larger interior spaces?

Port Authority Approves Freedom Tower Contracts
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY September 16, 2008 —Despite the current global financial turmoil, the Port Authority's Board of Commissioners went ahead today and approved several key contracts for the construction of the Freedom Tower.

WNYC's Bob Hennelly was there and has this report.

Fully 95 percent of the contracts needed to complete the $3 billion Freedom Tower have now been signed. Port Authority

Chairman Anthony Coscia said despite the current downturn, the agency's plans for the tower's 2.6 million square feet of office space remained viable.

COSCIA: This is an agency that for 80 plus years has been building through cycles and supporting the New York, New Jersey regional economy through good times and not so good. We built some of our most iconic structures frankly during the depression era

REPORTER: In two weeks, Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward is slated to release a report ordered by Gov. David Paterson that will include an updated timeline and cost estimate for the entire Freedom Tower complex and transportation hub.

For WNYC I’m Bob Hennelly

Coming Oct. 2: The September WTC Report

Port Authority officials rushing to create a comprehensive report on the World Trade Center redevelopment by the end of the month are getting a small reprieve. The report, which is expected to have a new timetable for the site's completion and a new (higher) price tag, was once slated for issuance Sept. 29 but is now due to be released Oct. 2.

The reason, according to a Port Authority spokesman: Rosh Hashanah, which runs Sept. 29 - Oct. 1.

A strange thought came to me. Those long rejected Foster "kissing towers" made me think of jeans. Pants. The top of it would need a bit more added to the middle so it doesn't look like they expose the...you know...area.:naughty:

BTW, Why do I have this feeling even more delays are nigh, even after the timetable has been released? The 3 day delay in just getting the report...it may be happening already?

Yeah, it looks like that! Looking around the site you can see a lot of stuff. More of that memorial steel looks like it's gone in. More of that trussing and it's covering over parts of the subway.

It really does look like they might be doing something I wondered about for awhile: filling in the hole around the tower up to ground level, rather than leaving it standing in an open pit while they built up. I still hope that they construct this tower sort of like how the Trump was done, so that lower levels get to at least looking complete with cladding as soon as it's possible, rather than waiting forever with mostly structural elements.

The due date was Sept. 29th, that shouldnt be an issue, in addition if Rosh Hashanah was sacred then why is the date right after it? NYC never stops never sleeps but were gonna put on hold the cities most important project in a half century for some matza balls. Great.

It's really difficult to say at the moment how everything will work out. It is in NO ONE'S interest to have a 16-acre hole in lower Manhattan. New York City needs this area to be developed AND completed as quickly as possible.

Ice Age Features Found at World Trade Center Site
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,426103,00.html

NEW YORK — Construction workers digging at ground zero have uncovered a 40-foot pothole and other features carved by glaciers about 20,000 years ago.

Unearthing these glacial features has been critical in preparing the foundation for Tower 4 of the new World Trade Center, being built by Silverstein Properties at the southeast corner of the site. Engineers need a clear understanding of the contours of the rock.

"You want to make sure you're not perching something on a ledge," said Anthony Pontecorvo, a supervising structural engineer at Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers, which is working on the project.

The bedrock could not be mapped until the soil was removed and the surface was fully exposed. But besides being an engineering necessity, the unearthing of geological features has offered scientists a rare window into the deep past.

But doing so...could that mean 16 acres, zero (non-government) tenants?
Who knows how long this crisis will last...2 years, 5 years, maybe a Second Great Depression, maybe a Japanese-style bear market, maybe Zimbabwe-style hyperinflation.

Maybe the WTC will be scaled back...FT/1 WTC loses its spire/antenna, while 2-4 are half their height, and the DB site is a park? Chicago Spire may be scrapped or reduced 50%? I don't know, but I am kind of paranoid about the economy and pessimistic about all of this.

I'd find it unlikely that the freedom tower and the memorial wouldn't be finished. I don't have a good reason to believe the other buildings won't get built, but they're more believable for getting delayed somehow.

They built Burj in less time :sly:

They also built the Burj with near slave labour in an environment where safety precautions are relaxed. Also the Burj was not built to be explosion proof or built on a majour transit hub. So really you are comparing apples to oranges.

In any case, I was watching the sunrise from DUMBO the other day and I was thinking about the skyline and how much it is going to change over the next few years. Everyone should just settle down and enjoy it the way it is now, it's in a very rare state, between World Trade Centers. Today will be, historically, that short and awkward period in the history of the downtown NY skyline where there were no Twin Towers but there also wasn't a new WTC. Like how there was a brief time where there was a Chrysler Building but no ESB. It's a unique period, historically, and we should be enjoying it while it lasts.

People love to blame the banks for screwing up our economy, and set this up as an us vs. them situation. None of you realize that the individual prosperity of Americans is directly linked to the financial well-being of banks and other financial institutions...

The better the situation of your bank, the more likely they are to extend you that loan on the bigger house or nicer car - major purchases and uses of credit that nearly ALL Americans require today. Even if you have good enough credit to get that loan/mortgage you need in this economy, you're probably getting a higher interest rate.
