Please, somebody explain me what the strange thing they are doing with the corners ????
-
No more diagonal corners. They're turning the base in to a box. Unfortunate, but supposedly it was deemed necessary.

for real why? is it by design or for safety?

Safety. The prismatic glass that was orginally going to be used broke to easily into dangerous shards.

The base was squared off because some moron from the P. A. decided that the customers would perceive the building as less stable with the chamfered corners. The "safety" rationalizations were just tacked on to support their idiocy.

Where is your source for that statement? 1wtc will be the safest office building ever imagined and safest ever built. The building is already almost fully leased out with Conde Nast as the main tenant! This building will not be coming down or fail like the twin towers did. 1wtc is extraordinary in ever aspect!

That is not true. Stop spreading conspiracy in the construction thread of One World Trade Center.

The main reason why the base was squared off is the company couldn't manufacture the blast proof glass for a chamfered base, and even if it could be made it broke into dangerous shards as mentioned above. That is why the base is being squared off.

The problem was that the panels were so deformed after the tempering process that they couldn't be laminated. It wasn't ever intented to be blast proof glass, and the chamfering didn't played a major roll in the issue.

The new design created by SOM consists of faceted panels that, due to the arrangement of these, can't be positioned into a chamfered geometry without getting odd forms at the corners, so the chamfering was scrapped.

It would take an extraordinary effort to take this building down. It would take a great effort to take any building down, but this building is far more than any other building.
No one's going to be taking this building down, though I'm sure there are plenty of terrorist who would like to. And that's why the extraordinary effort went into building it.
What happened with the original complex was beyond anything anyone would have imagined, but the circumstances were unique.

I've heard both that and the shattering explanation that once they were deformed by the tempering process, a large number of the panels cracked and the few that did make it past all that failed catastrophically at the hammer test. I remember posts saying "there's a youtube video of the test," but I have never been able to find it.

PS the "unstable" image idea is BS, unless you find evidence to support it, however I could actually imagine that happening... there is growing conciseness that it looks better squared anyway.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but will there still be programmable lights once the building is completed? Or are our current light shows temporary?

It seems like the current lights are set pretty far back (i.e. within the space that will become leased), not embedded into the floors' cross-sections or anything. Somehow I cannot see 1 WTC's client businesses agreeing to let the building owners control lighting in their offices during such-and-such hours.

And I was wondering if(and when) the "Whale skeleton" would be built.

Is it being built?

Was the side crane removed?

Yep, it was -- they removed it on 1/3/13. I was actually walking down the pier towards 1 WTC (same route Carlos and I took when we walked down the pier during my summer 2012 visit to NYC) when they were taking it down. So I have pics of it :) Will post when I get caught up on reading posts.

It seems they have adjusted the curtain wall panels to account for the mechanical floors vents. It was not like this yesterday.

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww, I missed seeing it in person by several days! (I left NYC on the 4th)

Nevertheless, that is effing AWESOME and I can't wait to see it in person again. :) I actually may need to come back to NYC soon for some more tattoo work so I will have to try to stop by and check this out :)

I will be going to NYC on the 24th of this month for 4 days. I can NOT wait!!! I've been dreaming of visiting for more than a decade now. First thing I'm gonna do is go to the WTC. I can just imagine its grandeur and sheer vertical epicness.

Take the E train to the WTC!! (it's the very last southbound stop on that line) If you're staying in midtown like a lot of people do, you can catch the E going there from the Port Authority bus terminal (42nd and 7th, I believe, so in the Times Square area). :)

It's pretty freaking amazing walking up to street level when you get off the train because you literally wind up in front of the WTC complex. I still remember how awed I was the first time I did that. :)

You should also walk down the pier - west of the West Side Highway - and make your way down to the WTC. You can get some seriously unbelievably amazing pictures that way. And 1 WTC just smacks you in the face from that angle! I love it!

I am echoing what the other's have said in the thread about how large and massive this tower appears to be on the skyline. I was taking a cab to work and crossing the 59th Street Bridge this morning and the tower just looked massive in the distance. It is hard to believe there were 2 of these towers. I am a born and raised New Yorker but I'll admit in the 10+ years since 9/11 you almost forget how tall the Twins were but now looking at 1 WTC, its amazing to see the height back. It is just so much taller and larger in size than any other building downtown. :) Of course I was 15 when 9/11 happened and I didn't spend much time downtown when I was younger so I only got to see the twins on occasion.

I can't wait for tower 2 and 3 to join towers 1 and 4. :)

OK - here are my 1 WTC pics from my recent NYC visit.

This is from when I was walking down the pier on 1/3/13... One of just 1 WTC with no visible crane action occurring, the others are when they were hoisting the side crane down to the ground. Very glad to have caught that on camera! :D

Via the SI ferry. I LOVE it when the ferry passes the WTC/WFC complexes and when there's that brief moment where you can see ALL of 1 WTC. So so so so cool.

I don't get the beef with the squaring off of the base. I actually like it.

totally agree squaring off the base is a worse cost saving change than the antenna/spire. after all, this is what everybody actually sees the most. oh well we will wait and see how it turns out. who knows, if they use the same highest quality materials as they did for the paneling it will look great. keep hope alive!

Ya, I was actually pissed when they made this change, but as time has gone on I've realized that I was just projecting my anger from the spire change onto everything else. I really do like the new squared-off based. As someone who advocated for a rebuilding of the actual twin towers, I like the fact that the base is now covering the exact footprint that one of the original towers had....

I think the big square cladding will look quite spectacular when lit at night....

Roadcruiser1
Jan 10, 2013, 11:50 PM
I do not agree that the squared off version of the base is terrible. The reason is it reflects the base of the original Twin Towers. The base of the Twin Towers were a box. They didn't look like a Chinese food takeout box. To me the original base design looked like a Chinese food takeout box. It didn't in any way represent or symbolize the history or the significance of the site itself. To me the redesign of the base represents what was lost, and helps with the healing. Maybe they can chamfer the corners and then it would look even more like the base of the Twin Towers and help people get use to the new base design.

NYguy
Jan 11, 2013, 12:36 AM
The squared off base is only awkward because of the way the rest of the tower rises. Initially, I didn't like the sloped base because I thought just the opposite, but actually seeing it, it made the base - which many called a bunker - look less so. Now, we'll see.

I don't think it makes or breaks the building, merely stating that it was my favorite part. The base being squared off may turn out to be perfect.

I liked the taper at the bottom because to me it gave the building a floating effect, like we were seeing a reflection.

I believe the new podium enclosure will look more integrated with the building than the previous prismatic glass design, what worries me is the elimination of the stepped terraces and the isolation of the west plaza, these modifications will surely leave the building almost disconnected from the ground... quite reminscent to the original trade center :yuck:

When should we see the first piece of base cladding go up?
There are some technical problems related to the bolts on the base girders, don't know how long will it take to fix it, shouldn't be more than a week.

Since everyone's talking about the squared off base. I always thought they had intended to square it off. After a few years I started to think they weren't going to after all. I do like it more squared off but my opinion might be biased cus I wanted the entire building to be squared off.

I'm happy however it looks now though. Can't wait to see it in person soon. The first time I went to NYC there was just a hole in the ground, second time there was a 7 WTC and the PATH station had moved, this time there will be a 1, 4, and 7 that will be cool.

What I wanted it to look it:

I just don't see why to have the wasted space on the corners. And to loose another interesting angle in the building when structurally it is certainly not required.

Yeah, but it makes more sense to have problems with the base due to the redesign and likely confusion of trying to redesign at the last moment. Some things may have been overlooked, however, the antenna mast bolt issue is guaranteed to cost some jobs.
