In some angles, this tower looks very slender, and in others, it's bulky.

I agree. I also don't get why the tower is inclined on the edges but near the top with the safety netting it straightens upwards..

For some reason the tower appears to be huge from a distance, but up close it isn't as intimidating.

I dare you to say that to 1WTC standing on West Street, right next to it. It's enormous, gigantic, and I'm saying this from a visit up close last June. It's MUCH taller now. Suggestion: Go see it up close.

Asking This Again..

Are they putting the marble up in the lobby, or atleast preparing for it?

On the Last page I saw that it looked like a white tarp was there/

Does anybody know?

Jan 4, 2012, 12:45 AM
^^Just use your head: most likely not, why would they expose polished marble to the elements before they've even begun to clad the base, they often use white tarp when they spray on fireproofing, which they are more likely doing to the steel in the ceiling of the lobby.

Interesting reasoning, but wrong. Fireproofing work began hmmm 18 months ago? Port Morris Tile & Marble Corporation has already begun with the Larissa White Marble cladding on B2 and B1 levels on the eastern section, moving forward to the Lobby. Almost all pieces already delivered.

I told you I wasn't directly below it. I was near 4 WTC. I never said it actually looked small, it looks smaller up close (but still big) than from far away. Here's what I mean..and yes the heights do look different. (taken same day)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7160/6631673707_df31578a07_b.jpg

You can't see how it towers as much from a distance over the other buildings.

And here you can really see how it dominates..just saying. Plus I believe this was discussed a while ago about buildings seeming not as tall up close. Another ex. to show what I mean with the ESB. (excuse my off topic-ness)

The NYPD was worried about truck bombs. Why this is the only skyscraper in Manhattan they got their collective panties in a twist over is a mystery. Just like why they waited till the last minute to make their objections.

Those old lobbies whenever I saw them I instantly thought of trade or commerce, in a way. Whenever I see an International Style building I think that. Maybe it because of the influx of International Style office buildings that were beginning to replace Pre-War/Art-Deco Styles in the 50's. But the new world TRADE center, will never (I don't care what anyone says) look like a place where trade or large companies are headquartered, that's just the nostalgia the old WTC has that the new one doesn't.

From what I can tell, the glass doesn't always move up faster on one side than others. It's really sporadic when it comes to which sides are clad the fastest. A few weeks ago, I believe it was the west end that was shooting up while the east, Carlos' view, was relatively dormant for a couple weeks.

Green Facts About New York’s New One World Trade Center

January 3rd, 2012
Tracey Schelmetic

Upon its completion in 2013, New York’s One World Trade Center (colloquially known as the “Freedom Tower”), part of a complex currently under construction to replace and honor the World Trade Center Twin Towers and other buildings destroyed on September 11, 2001, will be the tallest building in the United States (Sorry, Chicago!) and one of the tallest buildings in the world. At the very top of the completed skyscraper, the radio antenna that will top the 400-foot spire will reach a symbolic height: precisely 1,776 feet high, in honor of the year of American independence.

But here are some things you may not know: once finished, One World Trade Center will be the most environmentally sustainable building of its size in the world. (Seven World Trade Center, which was completed and opened in 2006, was hailed as New York City’s first “green” office tower, but it will be dwarfed by its new companion tower.) For starters, the building’s designer intend for it to derive about 35 percent of its power from renewable energy sources. Once the building is fully operation, it’s expected to draw as much as 70 percent of its power from green energy: no small feat in a part of the world as densely populated as the New York metro area.

The building features a whole host of green elements, including:
Green port-a-potties.

During construction, workers are using composting toilets in place of the familiar, chemically smelly portable toilets. Essentially, their waste is being allowed to do what waste was meant to do: mix with other decaying biological products and create nutrient-rich soil. After workers make their “deposits,” the solid waste is channeled into a container half full of saw dust and worms: industrious and conscientious workers who quickly go to work turning the waste into composted soil. The water of urine is evaporated away, leaving only the faintest film of biological material. (Hope you weren’t eating lunch!) In addition to being more efficient, the toilets are smaller and easier to move than large chemical portable toilets: an important consideration when your workers need to answer nature’s call more than 1,500 feet off the ground. Once human waste – both of the liquid and solid variety – is fully processed, more than 90 percent of it is re-used, eliminating the need to constantly empty and re-plenish the water in traditional portable toilets.

do you know when will the tower reach 400 meters tall ?

it really begins to dominate the skyline... starting now, the scar on manhattan is no more...

Jan 5, 2012, 10:14 PM
^ 400 m is around 1300 some feet, so that would be close to the topping out height. I would say if construction picks up, 4-6 months we should see it topped out.

That's arguable. 1WTC at least will be highly visible and recognizable.

i agree... although the design is fairly simple in concept, it is completely distinctive from anything else in the city. easy to remember/recognize... not to mention.... HUGE!

I think a main feature is the spire which will really make it stand out. Speaking of the spire/beacon, the top will flash the letter "N" in morse code for New York

What happened to STR? I remembered that he was the guy who would make stunning renders of the WTC and other projects in New York. Along with Zen,he would post great info on how this would all look like when finished. Not to say that Carlos and the others guys aren't keeping us up to date with 1 WTC,but out of the two that used to post here, STR is still here. Just saying. To move on to other things, glad that steel is finally coming up again.

So let's see, if they add new steel and the columns are about 40' tall the next steel columns should hit close to 1,180'. It will really be something once it tops out in the spring. Empire State Building look out, the World Trade Center is back in town

The skyline would be improved if those ugly blocks at the tip of manhattan were re-clad in glass or better, demolished. At least they kept most of the oldies, but the new blocks ruin it. I'm hoping that more glass buildings are built to balance out and modernize the heavy look of concrete and stone.

White tiles would do the lobby a bit more justice; but it ain't that bad.

SOM arranged the lobby in this way in order to highlight objects like paintings or the mighty dichroic glass displayed behind the front desk; rather than highlight architectural spaces. You should clearly get the idea if you compare both renderings posted on the last page.

Anyone who characterizes the NY skyline as one dominated by "60's concrete behemoths" has a serious case of penis envy. Anyway, the only city that could possibly criticize NY is London. No other city compares to NY.

FMIII
Jan 7, 2012, 1:08 PM
I agree with Robert, NYC IS the capital of the world. More than London, Tokyo or Paris. There is even a study which states that. Based on business, tourism, political center, art and cultural life, NYC ranks first (not in every category but first in total average)

Nonetheless some of its skyscrapers don't age well. Especially some downtown office towers from the sixties and seventies. When the twins were still there it didn't matter for they were almost invisible, dwarfed by the two giants.

Let's hope it will become the same again when the new WTC will be completed.
