I have an idea for 1 WTC on New Year's Eve!
On the night of that day, 1 WTC will be lit blue. Then once it's 11:59, it will start showing on all sides 60, one second later it will be 59, and so on. And ONCE it's midnight, it will say 2013!!!
Do you like this idea?
I think the PA is far too cheap to pull something like that off. When it comes to meeting people short of their expectations, the PA definitely takes the cake. That being said, them going out of their way to do something extravagant like that would be out of the question, given their prior track record.
Besides, in the long run, it probably wouldn't really draw much attention in the first place. LM is more of a financial district; midtown is the part of Manhattan known for festivities.
All being said though, I would like to take the opportunity in advance to wish all of you a happy and prosporous new year.

According to the WTC (http://www.wtc.com/news/giant-spire-that-will-top-one-wtc-set-to-arrive-in-manhattan), the Port Authority (http://www.panynj.gov) will take about three months to complete the installation of the spire.

so throwing on a radome covering would make it something different?
doesn't make sense to me.
I'm sure it doesn't, but it is a critical distinction, not only for this tpwer, but others before and after it. Perhaps you should revisit the plan for the spire here.

I wasn't sure about this thing being anything but a radio mast, but I got a close look at those base sections last Tuesday. They could have used a Rohn 65 if all they wanted was a mast. This thing is built into the design of the building and determined how the cap was constructed. I must be at least ten times as strong as the mast on the old tower.
I don't think it's cheating to call it a spire.

No, it is just an illusion. I think its because we are finally seeing more recent images without the south crane and a clear sky background. The two remaining cranes are alone in the sky without any thing for reference. The crane on the platform is actually not tall enough to reach the tip of the antenna mast. This causes me confusion as a diagram from IrishInNYC shows all three cranes still on the tower but with the crane on the platform being a completely different make and model with a custom tower that looks like a regular tower on top of a giant external climber.

I've raised a lot of tower sections with cranes and have never picked one up from the top. There's no reason to when you can pick it up from the middle, just above the center of gravity. Just about any section less that 110 feet or so is strong enough to lift that way.

As a special for New Year's Eve, here are a pair of photos to remind us how far 1 WTC went in 2012. By the end of 2013, this tower is going to take a form that will exist as is for the rest of its existence. To many, the skyline will finally regain the height it had before and we will ever move forward in height. For the sky is not the limit to mankind's dreams of claiming tall edifices of wonder. This dream, which has been in existence since civilization began, has fueled the creation of one of the world's greatest cities that has grown up and from from the grounds of the isle of Manhattan. Many have tried to hinder the dream's course through history. However, as seen by this project, they have failed for the most part. Once again, Happy New Year, and may everyone have a good year.

Great Video! On You-tube. Now can somebody answer me this?:
Has the construction of the rest of the facade, at the top, and I understand it is on the 90th floor, stopped or slowed down, and if so, is it because of the instillation of the spire, or antenna, or whatever it's called? I'm asking this because the progress of the facade seems like it has slowed down quite a bit, and if whatever the case, is it on schedule? Or better yet what is the projected date? Is it on time? Is there a delay? Or is it going along as planned?

I understand the antenna mast will be hundreds of feet tall. It will be very heavy. The platform on top won't support it, plus it's off center. Will the mast go up through the round hole which is about the right size? That would mean it won't be centered. Is the structure on top an observation deck for tourists? None of this shows up in the renderings.

Yes that round hole in the platform is where the spire will fit through and yes it is centered. The observation deck is on floors 100-102.

I wonder if the yellow safety railings on the antenna sections will be removed after it is completed or if they were designed to be hidden by the radome.
I hope they dont leave the yellow rings arround the antenna structure when its finished.:???:

Wow I cannot get over how tall this thing will be. Basically just 100 ft shorter than the CN Tower! It really will be an incredible building. I was in NYC this summer and it looks like they have already made lots of progress since then.
1wtc will be only be 23 feet shorter than the CN tower by pinnacle height.

Had to do a triple take yesterday on my way up the NJ Parkway just after exit 117, there is a nice marsh clearing to the northeast and on the horizon you can see the tower. There are a couple more spots within the next few miles up to the Raritan River crossing where you can make out the top maybe 30 floors, so happy the skyline is back to be seen from such unexpected locations.
Will be in the WFC tomorrow, as well as around the grounds getting some shots, look for them at latest Sunday afternoon.

it really is much more pleasing to the eye aesthetically. just beautiful, and so befitting of america's top city. all of the new works together, and doesn't fight the surrounding skyline or feel as if it is simply a bunch of tall building props---perhaps Dubai comes to mind. a high price was paid, but, as usual nyc and americans did it right. God bless all of those who silently sleep.

It won't be official until the CTBUH makes their final decision on whether or not the mast should be counted towards the final height in 2014.
Hudson11
Jan 6, 2013, 4:03 PM
The CTBUH is only "official" here. Its taller by pinnacle height and shorter by roof height. That's that. The CTBUH will come out later with their ruling and that's what this website will go by. Also sorry Matt but I don't know the answer to your question. It all depends on when they begin to put the mast in place.

I know you asked PMad, those platforms are temporary and are needed allow crews assist the mast erection.

You mean the mechanical levels? They are already poured and cured, not visible because they are located inside the plenum (louver walls form the plenum).

At approximately what time will One World Trade Center surpass the Willis Tower in Chicago, and reclaiming the "tallest building in the United States" title for New York?
It may not hold title of tallest building in New York for long, let alone the U.S. The official height of the building won't be decided until it's complete.

They are squaring off the base with steel and will then start cladding the base.
