But you forget that the Empire State Building was a much less complicated design, not nearly as many safety issues were brought up, they didn't have to clean up the biggest tragedy to happen to this country in history and also it was not nearly as tall as 1 WTC. Let us not forget that the original two North and South towers also took 10 years

Wow.. what a long slog. You'd think that they would be able to do it in half the time in this day and age.

I'm sorry. I hate to be yet another complainer, but windows are taking so extreeeeeeemly loooooooong to install. They haven't even lifted up the netting in forever. With about up to only (5 floors) of windows installed in the past 3 months, I say that the cladding won't be complete till next summer or late Spring. What about the base cladding.......... LOL Next Fall?

I remember a year ago when they said that "spire" construction would begin in March....then April, June, July, August, then October.....now finally here it is.....December, and one little section is sorta installed.

Lets not even talk about the museum.

And now, Winter is setting in. SURE to produce more delays!

The World Trade Center is one hell of a project, yes. But it also appears to be poorly managed. But that is just my opinion.

Regardless, it will be one hell of an exciting day when 1WTC is all finished! .......in a few years lol. (frustrated, sorry lol)

Finalists for the deck were announced in September...

http://gothamist.com/2012/09/27/danny_shake_shack_meyer_finalist_fo.php

the three-level observatory won't have a Windows on the World-style restaurant, but it will have food options available, as well as an event space for private parties. So, who are the finalists?

■Legends Hospitality Management which is a company owned by the New York Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys and David W. Checketts that "runs food services and merchandise sales at a number of stadiums and arenas."

■GSM Projects This Canadian company is working with Danny Meyer who owns Union Square Hospitality Group and its beloved restaurants like Blue Smoke, Union Square Cafe and Shake Shack.

■Montparnasse 56 USA "an affiliate of the French firm that runs an observatory and restaurant at the Montparnasse Tower in Paris." The company recently bought the observatory on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center in Chicago. For food they've "enlisted the Gerber Group, which operates the Whiskey Blue, Lilium and Living Room bars in New York, and Marc Murphy, the chef who owns the Landmarc restaurants in New York."

How funny, man! I live near the Montparnasse tower in Paris, and I've been once in the 'bar-restaurant' at the top.
Sure that if they do the same for 1WTC, it will be great.

Montparnasse Tower looks more impressive than 1WTC although it's only 200 meters tall; but it's surrounded only by buildings less tall than 30 meters. So, there's kind of "domination".
1WTC is surrounded by other supertall towers, then it looks less dominant.

Anyway, I hope they will had something like "WoTW" in 1WTC.

Maybe once the tower becomes operational in a few years, they'll consider something like Windows on the World. WoTW in the North Tower didn't begin operations until a few years after its opening if I'm correct.

The only thing extraordinary about it is its proximity to a special place.

The tower doesn't open until mid-2014....why are you so concerned about the rate of glass climb in late-2012? Put your emotions and expectations in context to those of a project that costs billions and consumes thousands of leading professional's full attentions for more than a decade. Anyway, the glass on this building was always destined to be slow going.

Spire, Antenna, what ever, Fancy restaurant or Mc Donalds at the top.
Anything has to be better than perpetual construction at this site,

I remember when the first glass went in and everyone went ape s@#!
bitching the glass was wavy, the wrong color, not going in fast enough,

Once 1WTC is finished, do you think office floors will look like the original "open-space" office floors in the Twin Towers ?

http://willyloman.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/wtc_office1.jpg

Notice that the floors were not tall at all.. People taller than two meters must have had difficulties to work here.

Floors are taller in 1WTC because there are 75 "real" floors, compared to 110 in the former towers.

The floors were short, yes, but that was normal for the time. 10 feet and a few inches if I remember correctly, so unless you were a giant you would have had little trouble. Maybe some claustrophobia, yeah. 2 meters is only approx 6.5 feet.

The new tower has 13 foot+ ceilings depending on the floor. That is the normal for today's towers, as you said.

That's because the Twins had tube frame non-structural cores and relied on perimeter steel for structural support. The new tower has a structural core which is significantly larger and stronger due to safety improvements. So, yes, the smaller floor area is to be expected.

No, the twins' cores were structural, but were only capable of supporting a gravity load. the ends of the floor trusses were 50% supported by the core. The misinformation surround the mythical non-structural core comes from the media and even some experts referring to it as an "elevator core." over time the title was explained [falsely]to mean that the core had the sole purpose of guiding the elevators. The core stood briefly after the collapses but were not designed to stay vertical without horizontal bracing from the floors and perimeter columns. The twins' cores also contained all the bathrooms, stairways, conduits, hallways, service rooms, local plumbing. Also if there is still any doubt of the structural nature of the core, how could the floors be supported if only one end of the trusses were attached to a load path? If it weren't OT I would go further, but I want people to not be misguided. The difference is that this core can stand alone in the worst case scenario of a partial collapse of the perimeter floors.

13'-4" for One World Trade Center and 12'-0" slab to slab spacing on standard floors. The ceilings in the twins were about 8' high and about 10' in the new tower.

Don't know why construction is so slow since a few months...

Ten days since the antenna pieces are here, and they still have not yet assembled it on the rooftop.
Same with concrete base, still not covered by glass, although they had two years to do this.

Only positive aspect is that there has been no mortal accident during the construction..
:???: let me use a metaphor to kindly explain why the "concrete base, [is] still not covered by glass, although they had two years."

Imagine you are building a house. I come in on the fourth day of construction, stand in the middle of a bare frame and demand that the walls be painted by tomorrow. There, now do you get it?

Antenna Mast metaphor:
Can you please have that lightning rod put on my house by tomorrow, I know I still have to build the roof, but I started construction a month ago, so there is no excuse. :sarcasm:

Is 1wtc immune from collapsing like the original twin towers did? What kind of damage would the new tower sustain if it was attacked again like on 9/11?

vinny_77
Dec 22, 2012, 7:53 AM
Structurally, yes it is immune. It has a reinforced concrete base, 3-foot concrete walls for stairwells, elevator shafts, risers and high powered sprinkler systems. There is also high-tech soft ware to detect any abnormalities in the buildings such as unattended bags.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the former twin towers had a particularity in their structure:
a part of the weight was supported by the exterior columns, and not 100% for the concrete core.
That's why it collapsed quite fast: the planes broke half of the columns when they crashed. Although the MAIN reason of collapsing was the heat, that softened steel.

For 1WTC, that's different:
first, the tower floors become smaller as it reaches the sky: less weight to support.
Then, it seems that concrete core is quite massive, so it will help in case of crash.

The twins had no concrete core. 50% of the external floors' weight [between exterior walls and core] were supported by the steel core columns and 100% of the core floors' weight and everything on them was supported by the core columns. In other words, the core supported more weight than the exterior columns but almost none of the sheer forces. The twins were able to stand due to this shared load system for long enough after the impacts to save thousands of lives, but yes, the remaining load paths were at their limits and the heating of the steel pushed them over the edge. This tower is designed with a core that will act as a building within a building in the worst case scenario.

This tower serves as a living tribute to those who perished on 9/11/01 and the twin pools serve as a reminder of what was lost on that tragic day.

As for this tower itself, no other office tower has been built to such high standards yet.

Any company who leases office space in this tower will know that they are moving into the most secure office building in the city. :)

Why is the glass taking so long did they not get in yet cause at this rate it won't be done til june.

As of right now, the crews are fully loaded with tasks, the base is being uncovered, it is being squared off and prepped for the cladding, at the top, they're working on the mounting of the mast and getting all the pieces up and also they have not taken down the nets yet because the mechanical/observation floors are being maintenanced right now. The glass isn't one of the top priorities.

Head downtown and stop by the kitschy little shops. I bought a plastic model of Tower One back in 2011. There's several shops near the site that have them; I think I got mine from a little shop on Liberty Street across the street from 4 WTC.

There is, but I forgot the name of the shop that definitely has new 1 WTC models available for purchase. I'm fairly sure it was mentioned in this thread in the past month... I think it is in the 20s in Manhattan?

That's my thinking as well. I was just there with my wife and in-laws for Christmas; we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and around Chinatown. I can't wait for this sucker to be finished! You know what? With all the talk about the spire and what not (sure, Durst was a narrowminded pain in the ass), this is going to be an awesome building regardless. They actually have the modified drawing of the spire in the diagram, and I actually thing it looks pretty good. And considering how they're constructing it (along with the building as opposed to years later as was the case with the North Tower), I think it likely will be counted toward the official height of the building.

NO, that's not what draws the distinction between ornamental spire and functioning antenna mast. I don't think it could be made any more clearer what it's for.

I suppose the question really is, why is a toothpick like the spire on the NY Times (or many other buildings) counted towards the official height but something that has broadcast equipment attached to it is not counted? It makes no sense to me and seems rather arbitrary on the part of CTBUH. Of course the fact that CTBUH gets to decide these things seems rather arbitrary to me too.

Hard to say, glass has been progressing all week so maybe just a small crew. Also seems to be a lot of work on the base going on just nothing with the top.

:previous: When I used to post photos here, I never overlaid any of my photos with watermarks because I encouraged others to freely download my photos so they can print/frame/hang them on their walls to enjoy.

For those who wish to strictly copyright their work (with watermark overlays), that restricts us to freely download/print/display on our walls.

I certainly respect your desire to protect your work and will honor your request by not right clicking and selecting the option to download.

Having said all of that, I do have plans to post photos here (in the near future) for all to freely use, but my resources are extremely limited at this time.

Interesting how your idea competes with the traditional Times Square Ball (rise/drop).

Over the years, Times Square has become a very loud constant playing of music, which often gives the audience a headache after a few hours of non-stop listening.

Your idea of something special on New Year's eve can easily be done by the ESB as well.

But let's face it, we already have Times Square and Rockefeller Center doing their thing.
