Are you sure? We're now passed the height of the roof of the Trump Tower in Chicago

Floor 90 is 1,130' above the lobby + the column splices. That new column is as tall as 4 vertical construction lights or 3 floors of 13,4'' below it or about 40 feet tall.

It would seem that the height with the new columns is 13 ft taller than the current perimeter columns. Which would make the height about 1153', not 1170'. They may be 40 ft tall but they are being placed lower in the building. They sure the heck aren't sticking 40 feet above the current perimeter columns.

Trade Tower Is Set to Add Prime Tenant, a Law Firm

By CHARLES V. BAGLI
January 26, 2012

Chadbourne & Parke, a 110-year-old law firm, is close to a deal to move to the 1,776-foot skyscraper under construction at ground zero, from its headquarters at Rockefeller Center.

If the deal is completed, it would represent a return to Chadbourne’s roots in Lower Manhattan after a 40-year sojourn in Midtown. It would also assist in the redemption of a tower that was once reviled for its design and dismissed as a “white elephant.”

Chadbourne would be the second blue-chip tenant in the past year to take space in the tower, known as 1 World Trade Center. Two-thirds of its three million square feet of office space will now be accounted for before the building reaches its full height sometime this summer. It will be the first tower to be rebuilt on the 16-acre trade center site after the terrorist attack in 2001.

“It’s a thrill now to come down the West Side Highway and see 1 World Trade Center as a beacon,” said Elizabeth H. Berger, president of the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association. “The Lower Manhattan skyline is coming back. This is about the concentration of new, green, high-tech commercial space in the middle of what is now an exciting live-work community.”

At the time of the Condé Nast announcement, Chadbourne had been looking for a new home in both Midtown and downtown. The law firm initially considered moving to a proposed office tower in Midtown. Many of the partners at Chadbourne, who live on the Upper East Side or commute to Midtown from Connecticut or Westchester County, were reluctant to make the longer trek downtown, according to a lawyer at the firm. But other partners asserted that the firm would benefit from the lower rents and the move to the high-profile tower.

“The guys at Chadbourne are used to walking to Rockefeller Center from the Upper East Side and Grand Central,” said one member of the firm, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter. “I said we could get black cars for all these guys and still come out ahead.”

These look like core columns staggered to the outer columns. This makes sense when it comes to overall strength of the structure as well as in prep for the mazzanine levels coming soon.I came to this conclusion because if you look closely at Carlos' pick, you can see two connecting plates on the beams, yet only one protrudes the top of the structure. Looking closer we see no other beams beyond what is currently present, and again, in another pick subway, etc. has been moving out of the core as the building tapers with height, and we move up in two stages now, so I think. But we've all seen perimeter steel rise higher first many times and this does not appear to fit the profile at all. So, look at Otie's earlier posts and those awesome renderings done and pay attention to the core space in the upper levels. I think we will see core steel rise a level above now possibly till TO. First post, been following for nearly a year. Thanks all!

That is great news NYGuy, thanks as always for posting. More proof that these towers should fill up in the near future. AND we got more steel up top!

I did a little digging (http://www.observer.com/2011/real-estate/chadbourne-and-parke-makes-lemonade), and found that Chadbourne and Parke occupied about 300,000 square feet at Rockefeller Center, so I'd imagine they'd take a similar amount of space here at 1 WTC.

In the near future, or eventually. This tower is about 2/3 leased. Not bad for a tower of this size at this time.

Sky-high WTC Subway shuttered
After 18 months of rising along with the steel at 1 World Trade Center and serving thousands of sandwiches
to hungry iron workers along the way, a unique fast-food eatery has closed.

http://www.crainsnewyork.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/storyimage/CN/20120127/REAL_ESTATE/120129899/AR/0/Subway-at-1-World-Trade-Center.jpg&q=100&MaxW=800

As of last week the only subway at the World Trade Center site is once again the one that runs on rails underground. The other one, the Subway sandwich shop whose elevation had been rising along with the steel at 1 World Trade Center since 2010, is gone.

The national chain's most exclusive outlet—with a clientele that never exceeded about 250 iron workers building what will be the city's tallest spire, closed last week after 18 months of lackluster sales. It wasn't financial losses that shuttered the restaurant known for its $5 foot-long subs. The problem was strictly one of logistics. By design, 1 World Trade narrows as it rises, and the restaurant, which needs to be on a top floor to be near the workers, simply ran out of room as construction continued to the building's current 90th floor high point.

Meanwhile, now that the place is gone, a few restaurant inspectors are probably thrilled. A journey to the shop entailed taking a hoist, climbing stairs encased only in netting and sometimes mounting ladders as well. It was the only restaurant in the city where owners knew the inspectors were coming because they needed to be escorted to the site, Mr. Grutta said.

Mr. Grutta said the company is considering hoisting the restaurant to the tower's roof when the building tops off at 105 stories, so the iron workers will have somewhere to eat while they are installing its antenna.

:previous: Hmm. There could be a Subway in the obs deck when 1 WTC is finished. Or is that too far-fetched? I'm just keeping all the possibilities into account.

Yeah, put the Subway in the observation deck! Really, is there any reason they couldn't just temporarily close an elevator and use that when they needed to get stock up there (in place of a service elevator)?

Hi all,

Longtime 1WTC thread lurker, first time poster.

1WTC commands the center of my downtown skyline view from a Greenwich Village high rise window. It’s been very exciting watching it go up, and of course I’ve taken the occasional photo.

Here is how it looked an hour or so ago. Hope you enjoy!

Perhaps this will prevent people from getting eyestrain staring at a few sub-pixels... 100% crop (I only own a 150mm lens currently:() of almost the exact same shot, just taken a couple seconds later in worse light but with slightly better sharpness.

Hi, everyone.

Having followed the construction of the World Trade Center since I first visited New York in 2010, I finally registered on Skyscraperpage today. It is truly amazing to see the towers rise, and I can't wait to visit NYC again this October.

Thanks to all who posts updates, especially CarlosV. Thank you for your great work!

Her are some pictures from WTC Progress on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/WTCProgress).

The renderings are showing what's inside the mast:tup: the radio antennae wont be visible

Yes... I understand that  What I am saying is, to be counting as height, dosent a spire have to be a spire, and not an antenna covered in paneling. This argument has always been that if something has a function (like the antennae on top of Sears) then it does not count toward height. But if it is purely architectural (say like the spire on BOA) then it does. This "spire" is not architectural, it s a fancy antennae.

I would consider it architectural due to the fact that it enhances the look of the tower itself. Yes it is a radio antenna but it is there also as an architectural element.

Yes but some building that have spires as part of a design are made to handle antennas, so what is the damn difference? The freedom tower's mast is designed to look nice, therefore architectural, its not like there putting a generic TV tower up there.

I believe the 40' core columns that are going up extend from the 89th floor to floor 91. They have connector plates for floor 90 at 1,130' and Floor 91 at 1,151' + splices add 5' to 8'

Thanks. I've noticed of all 5 (soon to be 6 with carnegie 57) buildings over 1,000 feet, one world trade center is really the only building so far to have a "solid" roof height.....all the others are only tall with their spires, even the empire state building's capsule appears like a spire.....but this building really shows its height all the way to its roof, even it's spire. It may even appear taller than the sears tower! (btw we are currently tied with Chicago for most buildings over 1,000 feet) :)
