Surely you don't refer to the extended fins?

You betcha, it looks even worse than when the cladding was flat. The shinny angles going in all directions reflecting different buildings looks like a house of mirrors. This is even more disappointing than before. :uhh:

Well I couldn't disagree with you more my friend, with all due respect. I think the fins gives this building that bit of sharpness that it needs with to compensate for the rest of the massive proportions. I think since the base has such a different aspect of size it really fits in well with the diagonals and the reflection of the sun in many directions will physically and metaphorically light up the hallowed ground that is the WTC Memorial.

You're complaining about an unfinished product. Why not wait until the base is complete, the platforms are removed, and all of the fins are open?

Because no amount of waiting or fin opening is going to do anything to change the gawd-awful color of that glass. It looks like 10 year old, uncared-for aquarium glass. :yuck:

agree with the color, i said the color does not go with the scheme weeks ago and nothing i've seen since has made it look better but it is what it is,we have to live with it. The base sucks and the "spire" sucks but they hit a home run with the rest of it because the building itself is gorgeous

Sounds like a 1956 chevy, the messed up the front grill & rear taillights....but the middle is still cool LOL! We could have had a '57 chevy for a building but they built us a '56

Are the glass fins going to be "fixed" in place for good or will they open & close for ventilation or some other reason?

I cant believe they scrapped the radome because of "maintence costs" saftey concerns but they plan on having someone clean both sides of those glass fins to keep them clean?

Window washing must be done regularly, replacement spire covering not so much. Windex and guys on a scaffold must be cheap.

Any story on the mast lighting? Since they blew the July 4th unveiling date couldn't they just go live at any point or are they going to wait until 9/11 to make a press thing out of it for no good reason.

I remember reading a few posts back about a permit problem. How could that be? Hasn't the city known about this beacon for years now? Surely it can't suddenly be a problem for them.

There's isn't a problem with the beacon.

The next logical date to turn on the mast and beacon is on Sep 11.

Many buildings have bases that use contrasting colours. The Shanghai WFC is the same way.

I thought that 9/11 would be the next logical date for an unveiling of the beacon, but it's also the date we get the "tribute in lights" lighting we are used to seeing Downtown.
I don't know that they would want to run over that with a rotating beacon.

You realize the original design called for prismatic glass which would have reflected the light many ways similar to how the fins work. Well actually before that we had a cement bunker base. Personally I think the base looks great the way it is. The glass is more clear than it is green, I think it just looks that way because it reflects trees and contrasts with the blue glass of the tower above. In person it looks very nice, and when it's finished I'm sure it'll look even better.

I wonder if the WTC1 will adopt a policy where it changes various colors based on the season or event at hand? Such as Christmas,St. Patricks Day or even if the giants win the Superbowl like the ESB does.

although nashville, tn has a proposal for a building, which is about the size and ht of the 3rd building in the nyc world trade center, it was never presented as a building form such as these. supposedly the tallest in the nation, outside of nyc, it will have problems filling structures they are 1.5 million sq ft down to say 250 thousand sq ft.

as for the new york buildings, i am sort of confused on the final color or materials used. i like the designs of the three tallest, and i like the dome on the original building and the other roof angles of the originall building. the two or three tallest are very attractive in the initial renderings in the flashy aluminum. i'm just glad that their hts are back and being re-established in their rightful area of the island. congrats

So if I'm not mistaken this will be the only year the whole thing is lit up like this for the 4th of July since after the construction is finished the LED construction lighting on the inside of the building will be removed. Someone had said that before but I was just wondering if that's true or not.

correct, the workers create the color effects by wrapping construction lights in colored cellophane. Once the office lights are installed and the construction lights are removed, they won't be able to create the same effect.

I believe what he's trying to say is that they should permanently use colored bulbs instead of cellophane. This wouldn't be possible since the construction lighting will be replaced by standard office lighting.

People, if you want special "colored" lighting wait until they light the mast and beacon.

Quick question, is the antenna going to have the red warning lights down the length of it like the old one had?
No. It already has it's aircraft warning light on. (red at night, white strobe during the day)

That entire set was some of the best shots of how the tower fits into the skyline I've ever seen, but the one I quoted above takes the cake.

What a lovely picture. Hopefully there's no substantial interior work until after christmas so we can get a WTC Christmas Tree one last time.

Still, I have to point out they have the colors backwards. It should be red, white, and blue from the top down. Otherwise, its the French flag.

The Empire State building gets away with doing it the other way because the blue at the time is the smallest section (like in the flag).

I guess it's from what angle you're thinking of. When hanging as bunting or from a flagpole, the blue is first, followed by the white/red. Isn't your suggestion if it were hanging from the floor going upwards? That wouldnt be accurate.

That's true but I'm figuring that because we're doing colors and not a representation of the flag. It should be displayed as the colors are read - "red, white, and blue".

What mheadroom is referring to is that, every time you have a vertical sign, you read it from top to bottom... so red, white and blue means the red should be on top.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before... over and over. There are still 8 (by my count) temporary platforms that have yet to be removed. Somebody's got a great graphic that explains this. I'll try to go back a few (dozen?) pages and see if I can find it again.

Wow, you sound really childish, like a spoiled kid whining about his daddy not putting together a swing set in the backyard quickly enough. You obviously don't have any sense of what it takes to construct a building like this, or any consideration for the all those construction workers themselves and all the work they do. The building doesn't build itself, and it isn't being built solely for your satisfaction either.

In the meanwhile, I'm pleasantly surprised with how well the base glass cladding is turning out! I wasn't sure how I'd feel with the juxtaposition between the tower proper and the base, however it has surpassed my expectations.

I agree. My favorite picture so far. 4 WTC has been my big surprise. IMO the real thing is much better looking than the renderings. The great news with 3 WTC going up now, is everyone can see how amazing this new WTC looks. And I just love how reflective it is. With the older buildings around it, the new WTC buildings not only stand out, but does such an amazing job of reflection the sacred ground of the original twins. Well done everyone. And everyone who post these amazing pics everyday never gets enough credit. So thank you!

Please does someone know if they are going to add "hoods" on the cooling towers, as described in a few renderings ??

According to me, that would be a nice idea. However, cooling towers without hoods are good enough.

It would reduce the "transparent" aspect of the ring, when it's seen from far distance !

I believe what he's trying to say is that they should permanently use colored bulbs instead of cellophane. This wouldn't be possible since the construction lighting will be replaced by standard office lighting.

People, if you want special "colored" lighting wait until they light the mast and beacon.

Yeah, should be nice. I know they're still programming the system. Won't be as impressive as ESB, but I always look forward to PCK's signature projects.

Hudson11

i don't think they're still programming it. They've shown that they can light it fully now if they had the go ahead. But they're probably waiting to do some sort of pompous ceremony on 9/11/13.

I have no pics, but I can tell you the North face is hard to photograph because it is directly across the street from the Verizon Building (140 West St) so the best you can see is from the street which currently is covered by construction platforms leading to the pedestrian overpass to the WFC. If I'm not mistaken, it has the least amount of glass installed of the 4 sides.
