Saw it in person for the first time this week as I've been working in NYC. Tall building, of course and a pretty nice feat construction, architecturally, etc. That being said, the building doesn't do it for me. I don't know why but it seems less exciting in person than I thought it would be. The leaning illusion is pretty cool from a distance though.

Truth is Out There
Aug 9, 2014, 12:30 PM
How fitting that in the photo, the floor they are on is unfinished and uncladded- just like the spire, which is why by all true reckonings, WTC-1 is 1368 ft tall. An unfinished spire is not a spire. Period. The only architectural element on the spire is the housing for the beacon.
Its not finished, so it can't count towards height.
Get over it. :koko:
I know and sympathize. It is such a shame. The building looks so good, but that unfinished thing on top is such an embarrassment. I know, we Americans try to put a brave face on it, and in our patriotic fervor call it “industrial”. But in reality, the two things just don’t go together (the building and the appendage), which is not surprising, as one is a beautiful finished structure, while the other is an unfinished embarrassment. But I do agree, it can never be changed, as a change (as per CTBUH) could disqualify the appendage counting towards the building’s height. So we are stuck with it in perpetuity, a testament to Man’s greed, and maybe, in that sense it is fitting.

I went to NYC two weekends ago, and did the memorial-museum package. I did not care for the foreign tourists laughing and taking smiling selfies by the reflective pools. They don't seem to understand this is sacred ground where thousands died, not the Smithsonian. If people get destroyed online for taking selfies at other sensitive sites like Auschwitz, why is this okay? Sorry, rant over. It just irked me. These pics are mostly looking up from the base, so it's a bit amateurish, but it does give you a sense of the scale.

^^ It's a very peculiar thing about this place; one of the city's largest tourist draws... Though it's people's natural reaction, when a camera is aiming at them, to smile, I have noticed that most are respectful enough to give a straight face or half-smile when posing in front of the reflecting pools. There will be, of course, teens and children who aren't taught well enough about the seriousness of the grounds.
I was there this weekend with a dozen friends who had never been, and one more thing was consistent: they all had great appreciation for the rebuilding going on around them. Specifically, for 1WTC, as they likened it to an enormous and powerful middle finger to those who stole what was there before it.

Went to the site late last week. Also had the chance to visit the museum.
For a place so sacred and moving, it angered me to see some kid's ignorance regarding 9/11. Don't want to spoil it for anyone, but for those who have been in the museum, the area which shows the first plane hitting and the firefighter reacting, as well as the infamous image of the African American woman leaving the area following the towers' collapse covered with ash, some of the kids there were laughing and mocking the airplanes crashing into the building.
Don't get me wrong, I understand that those kids have yet to realize the importance of it all, but I would go as far as prohibiting my kids from visiting such a historic site until they were old enough to truly understand the meaning and tragedy of it all.
Anyway, had the chance to see 1WTC's lobby as well. Can't wait for that baby to open to the public. :)

The true irony is the fact that you can't come to terms with other's opinions on the redesign. It doesn't bother you, and that's fine. So, the fact that you have a problem with other people's problem is the true irony.
Just so you know, this is an archictectural/skyscraper forum. Wo don't come here to argue over divorce, people come here specifically to comment on and view skyscrapers and architectural detail. It's why people are allowed to comment on how good things look as well as how bad. And no one "gets over" how good something looks.
Let that be understood by everyone for future reference.

I agree, but then again, it doesn't matter to me. Despite how many of us feel about 9/11, the city, specifically Lower Manhattan, cannot keep itself in the past and become offensive whenever people don't take history seriously.
It's their loss most of all since they can only enjoy the present. Many of us knew the towering giants that once stood on the place those waterfalls are now and remember a NYC that was dominated by them, in a world before 9/11, when those souls were still alive and enjoying life. We understand and have the perspective of both worlds.
Besides that, the memorial plaza will still sort of be like the plaza that came before it. A place of solace and rest surrounded by the busyness of the city and the buildings that will soon stand around it.

Aug 12, 2014, 6:21 AM
I, too, just visited the memorial back on Sunday, for the second time though. There were a TON of people there now that you don't need a pass to get in. Most of the people I saw when quietly looking at the pools and taking pictures and touching the names. Most of the smiling pictures came when they were posing in front of 1 WTC. I liked how people can "enjoy" themselves in such a somber place, if that makes sense. You're allowed to move on without forgetting is what I'm getting at I guess. Sorry, just wanted to chime in. The site is just so powerful, and raw with emotion, yet so elegant at the same time.

That was the intention of the design. It's not a park, but is not the same as the museum below, which has a more serious atmosphere. A lot of people at the memorial have never seen
or known the Twin Towers, and are taking in the size of the pools. The Freedom Tower as a backdrop serves as an indicator of scale.

Looks like the Port Authority paid over $3.5 Million dollars for a new WTC campus logo and all they got was a few plain boring rectangles
http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/08/14/nyregion/subWTC/subWTC-master675.jpg
“The logo acts as an icon for the whole physical space of the 16 acres,” said Erica Dumas, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the trade center site.
The new emblem includes the words “World Trade Center” set in the Helvetica Ultra Compressed typeface. It will not replace the logos of individual occupants of the trade center site, but is supposed to lend a graphic unity to way-finding signs, building entrances, digital directories, kiosks, uniforms, websites, apps and marketing materials.

The Freedom Tower's spire helps it of course in terms of height, but the bulkness of it is also a negative in terms of how the building appears to soar.

And people wonder why we have a record deficit in this country.
Let's see if this makes sense; save 20 mil by scrapping the spire, but blow almost 25% of that on a feeble rebranding that I wouldn't pay an art student 10 bucks for. The worst thing is it's not even a good logo! Even if it was the best logo ever, spending 4 mil on it would still boggle the mind. But THIS piece of crap?! :koko:

I like the logo. Not sure how much rebranding costs in general but the worst way to denigrate it would be on aesthetic grounds.

Agreed. But what can you expect? This whole rebuilding process has been laced with so much BS it would make any sane person question. But, as long as they are actually doing something, they can crap out as much money as they want.

That is a great shot. The sheer density and beauty not to mention the perfect visibility for such a shot. Bravo!!! :)
I can't wait to see that same perspective once all the the supertalls are finished by 2020. I can see myself spending hundreds on observation decks because I never get bored of this city. Its like crack for some reason.

Early 2015. I double checked various sources and they all point to Q1 2015.

I havent been to NYC in YEARS, but have loved keeping up with the WTC progress here with all the pics!!! We were down in FL last week on vacation and missed our flight from FL back to Cleveland. So we ened up having to purchase a new flight on another airline and wouldnt you know it that flight had a connection thru Laguardia. :D
I snapped this pic with my phone as we were heading in to land. I know its a pic from a plane and a pic using my phone, but it's the only pic I've been able to take of the WTC, so I figured that I'd post it here.

They start moving in/working there sometime in November and are phasing all 2,500 employees between Nov. -Jan/Feb. 2015 is going to be the most exciting year in a while for the complex. This and Tower 4 will welcome office workers back, Tower 3 will be rising, the transit hub will most likely and hopefully open by the end of next year, and Liberty Park. Ah!

This definitely came from Time magazine's panorama from the top of the spire. You can see the whole interactive thing here:

You can zoom in and take a screen shot or order fancy prints from their website.

^^How much earlier does onewtc turn off the lighting on the spiretenna compared to buildings in midtown like ESB? Is this Durst trying to save money or will it change when the building's completely done?
