I wonder if the Port Authority will allow Philippe Petit to visit One World Trade Center's observation deck for free just like when the PA granted him a "lifetime" pass to the South Tower's Observatory. My guess is not likely.

20 feet, and actually I would like to see Philippe Petit do something at the World Trade Center site. He is connected with the site due to him being part of it's history.

40 ft. in diameter than?

Nice picture Carlos. It can easily be made into something deceiving so people would think it is part of a Fringe episode.

This is such a great thing to look at it. I have been to NYC four times over the past two years, beginning with April/May 2010, and it was nothing like this back then.

Such a great piece of history we are witnessing. I can't wait to see it again and also to be there on the day it is done.

When I was in New York, I noticed that my whole sense of scale seemed to go right out the window. Des Moines' tallest is 630 feet, and a block away it feels like it just goes on for forever, looming above you. But in New York, I'd see an interesting building, jot down the street corner, look it up later, and be stunned that what seemed to be a mid-rise building was 650, 700 feet. Your city is just crazy like that.

I wish my city was New York,I'm from Nashville and been living here ever since.Yeah, the tallest one here in Nashville is 617 and looks amazingly huge from about a block away.I've always wanted to go New York but time and money doesn't allow.I bet it's mesmerizing seeing over 550 buildings that would dwarf anything in Nashville so densely packed.

SBARN, you should do the same thing with this picture, if its not too much trouble, i just think it would be cool to see it from the opposite angle and at a little closer distance, great job on it btw, the wtc and hudson yards looked amazing in it.

Thanks, I'll try to do one from this angle at some point. In the meantime, here are a couple more photomontages, looking from the north, with the WTC complex anchoring Lower Manhattan.

I hope I'm not being a PITA, but 15 Penn, GiraSole and Tower Verre would complete this. But then again, the first two might be blocked in that pic by the HY towers or the Manhattan West duo....or the first two might block the two duos. Looks to be the same for 50 West Downtown with the completed WTC complex (Edit: barely visible with a second look???). ANd I should add at least two imminent additions to 57th.
Any way I see it, if all goes well, this will be a mad crazy skyline.
BTW Nice superimposition of 432 Park; the dimensions look more realistic there. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with its height where it is, tho. ESB will inevitably lose her lone dominance...but while we wait for that to happen on the West Side, I'll haft get used to the new arrangement.

Sense of scale, man. Same thing that happens if you stand in between 1 WTC and 7 WTC, as I have done. They both look the same height - or they did last fall when I last visited - when you look up. Never mind that 1 WTC will be 2x the size of 7 WTC (in amount of floors) when it's all done. It's some serious mindf***ery. :haha:

Then - when you get to see 1 WTC from the south - the best view (I think?) being when you visit the 9/11 memorial park, you see 1 WTC and then go "WHOA! Now THAT'S huge!" :D

For me - having the tallest building in my entire home state being only 250ish feet high... 1400 feet is kinda a big deal for me! Lol. I remember looking at Rockfeller Center and the ESB for the first time, and trying to find their tops. :D

Yup!

For people who have a hard time imagining the size of NY's buildings, you can use the "Diagrams" page here at Skyscraperpage (see menu above) and enter your city's tallest building compared with NY's buildings.

As an example, I selected Des Moines' tallest building and Nashville's tallest (mentioned by NewYorkDominates), and placed them next to the WFC and 1 WTC so you can get a good idea of heights:

We are at 1248 feet. Next jump would make it taller than the Empire State Building. It would be 1,254 feet (382 meters) while the Empire State Building is 1,250 feet defeating it by 4 extra feet.

1,247 feet is way above 280 meters. 1 WTC is about to cross the 400-meter mark, the 4th after 3 American skyscrapers ever to do so. And we all know very well that two of them have a connection with this guy.

What's the radius of the Spire?3 ft.?

Also, someone mentioned the notion for Alain Robert to possibly climb the 1WTC.I believe he's going to leave the tower alone as this is sacred ground and shouldn't be a site to fool around climbing with the possibility of death, unless it's planned like the Burj Khalifa which I doubt New York would let anyone do.

From the current design, the widest section of the radome is located at the "110th" level, just below were the strakes begin, being ~24' in diameter from external face to external face of the fiberglass panels.

You'll have to take Bob's word, I only have information of the architectural radome, as far as I'm aware the rod hasn't been fully designed yet.

It's very interesting that people complain we don't use the metric system but if we used yards as a measurement everyday it would be similar to the metric system of measurements.

An office with a view (http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/2012/03/27/an-office-with-a-view/)
By Lucas Jackson MARCH 26, 2012

http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS6A.jpg
Everyone knows that moving into an office with a view is a sure sign of status at your job. If it’s a corner office with a view in two different directions you have managed to place yourself within the upper rungs of the corporate ladder. If your office has a 360 degree view of the financial capital of the world, New York City, you must be a legend. Or, you could be an ironworker putting together the iron skeleton of the new One World Trade in downtown Manhattan.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS6I600.jpg

One World Trade, previously known as the Freedom Tower, has in the last several years quietly grown taller and taller. Today it stands a few stories below being the tallest building in New York City. It is still rising too, at a rather rapid rate and after visiting the top floor I met first hand the group of dedicated ironworkers who are piecing it together, one bolt at a time.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5X.jpg

Their commute to work is as vertical as ours is horizontal. Because the interior of the building is not yet finished, the quickest way to get to their workplace is via several different elevator systems and a couple of steel ladders. One external freight elevator (running express for the beginning of the daily shift and at lunch hours) took us to the 39th floor where one must catch another elevator that took us to within a couple stories of the top of the building. In this case it took us to roughly the 90th floor. Here we left the elevators behind and took two open steel ladders to the 92nd and 93rd floors where the steel skeleton of this building is being installed whenever the weather allows. One of these ladders is two stories tall and a little bit wobbly, it was climbing this ladder that I realized I am glad that I’m not afraid of heights.

On this clear Friday the weather on the ground was warm with a light breeze; up almost 1000 feet above the ground that small breeze was a little more intense and the temperature dropped accordingly. However, the view was incredible. At this height the building had risen far above any of its neighbors that either withstood or have risen since September 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the view, but for the very necessary reason of safety, there is plastic mesh surrounding these open floors to keep both workers and their equipment from falling off the side to cause chaos below. Even with this mesh the sense of height above the city is incredible and the view that you can see through the mesh is amazing.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS65.jpg

Inside this mesh a few dozen iron workers work busily to connect the beams that make up the massive iron infrastructure of the building together. Two cranes, whose massive bases take up almost the entire interior of the building, work in unison to lift the massive steel beams into place and to help make the minute adjustments to these beams that will allow the bolts that hold them together to be placed. The workers seem to have the balance of gymnasts as they move back and forth on the beams to both guide the beams that hang from the cable of the crane and then to come and attach them to the existing framework with large bolts and pointed wrenches. Safety is an obvious necessity at this height and when working with such heavy materials. Every worker in the air seems to have a partner below who is constantly watching to make sure that things look okay and everyone is strapped up, in some way or another, to the beams they sit, walk or stand upon.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5R600.jpg

For me it was difficult to keep an eye on everything moving around all at once while photographing. The safety officers and representatives from the Port Authority who organized this trip helped to make sure that we did not stand below workers attaching bolts since we were standing two floors below them on the highest finished floor in the building. We also stayed away from the areas where the cranes were lifting and placing the steel beams and where the workers used ropes attached to the beams to guide them into place. The repercussions of being in the wrong place at the wrong time in that area were too dire for us to get near, mostly because no one wants to be in the way or to distract any of these workers while they move thousands of pounds of iron beams through the air.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5F.jpg

It was a dream to photograph though. It was like a dance I didn’t know the steps to, but was mesmerizing to watch. Everything was as coordinated and precise as it could be when dealing with these beams. In the one hour we were able to spend up there it seemed as if half a dozen beams were attached. It was great watching one worker sit on top of a beam as he and another used a massive weight hanging from a crane to move the beam inches to the right so that the bolts would line up with the holes drilled for them. We were also lucky enough that one of the massive beams placed in the interior of the building to enhance the structural integrity was being guided into it’s final destination by an ironworker’s outstretched foot. It felt like another world to be up there.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5K.jpg

The view, the height, and the magnitude of the building that these workers have built were all amazing to see firsthand. I took as many pictures as I could to try and show the difficulty of the work as well as the amazing visual scene it made when combined with the openness of the sky all around these men. It was exciting to take photographs that are now a part of the record of these workers and this building that they have built above the site known to most as “Ground Zero.” It was also exciting to see the inside of this building that is soon to become the highest in New York and will house thousands of workers in it’s future. I now feel connected to this building by seeing it’s skeleton, it’s hard iron soul, even though I was only there for an hour. I cannot imagine the pride and connection that the ironworkers must feel and I don’t think any of them are going to be able to keep a straight face when someone talks about “an office with a view.”

Notice the non-structural red beams that form the louver walls at pic four, pretty much the same configuration at the podium's plenum.

Damn i was just about to post that. The pictures in that article made me realize that iv never really been even close to that high in a building. The highest iv been is the observation deck in the prudential in Boston, and thats tiny compared to this. I can't wait till i get the chance to be up there.

It's very interesting that people complain we don't use the metric system but if we used yards as a measurement everyday it would be similar to the metric system of measurements.

I *iknew* I shouldn't have volunteered the yardage info. I suck coagulated moose blood at math. :D

From New York harbor I absolutely abhor 4 wtc and find it such an unflattering angle of that building. That thing is such an imposing monster from that vantage point, though from the east, west and even the north it's just fine. Hopefully I won't feel that way after its complete but right now, oh my........

You are in the definite minority here--any city would be most fortunate to have it and, in the context of the complete World Trade Center complex, it will be stellar.

Anyhow, I tend to agree with him, this building is pretty banal in my opinion. Then again, that's a fitting tribute to the kings of banal which was the original WTC, but at least you can appreciate how overpowering those were, this is just one mediocre building that would be completely unremarkable if it weren't so tall and being built to replace the most notorious towers in history.

I'm sure I'm about to be completely shouted down, but here's to hoping 2 WTC is 2 times better than this boring tower... Hell I even prefer 4 WTC to this because the facade on it is much more interesting and attractive.

That is the reason why I liked the original World Trade Center. You can't say you hated them for their design because they both had the same design, because if you hated them then you hated both towers. :)

My thoughts exactly. The WTC never tried to be appealing. These towers impress by dominating their surroundings, much like the towers before them. It is the boldness that makes 1 WTC great, much like the ESB compared to the Chrysler. I'm just glad we are repairing the skyline instead of keeping a hole which was way worse than what we have now.

Yes, the building is not very exciting but it is not horrible at all. Anyone who finds it ugly has low levels of taste. It's a very handsome building.

The Norman Foster puts it to shame and I STILL don't understand why it wasn't selected. We wouldn't have to deal with the 2,3 WTC stump mess if we went with this.

i like this building. i like the glass, i like the design, and the pinnacle when complete, will serve its purpose with the building, ie. to be a symbol. the beauty of this building is its simplicity, in terms of design; offering a diamond and a pyramid shape at the same time. lol, i just thought of that symbolism, a diamond can represent strength, and the pyramid represents eternal life. anyway, as commercial demand goes, as well as the history of the area, this building and the others, will be more than great once completed, lets just hope they all do get completed.

One World Trade Center and the new World Trade Center is symbolic. The height of One World Trade Center which is 1,776 feet is symbolic of American Independence. The buildings surround One World Trade Center will make a spiral staircase like look to replicate the staircase in the torch of the Statue of Liberty. It also acts as a way to protect the footprints of the former Twin Towers. This is the design for the new World Trade Center. Hopefully people will stop arguing and finally see the meaning here.

Wow, this picture is amazing. Too bad the pier is sticking in on the left, but the colours and haze are amazing.

I think they will need to jump the cranes in order to erect the next level of core steel, yes?

:previous: Looks like it. May be the last jump, I think they only have two more levels of steel to put up until its topped out!!

While we are talking about the tower normally there have been news articles recently again with people complaining about the tower's height, or the floor count. Here are three examples.

Yes, so what's next? Crane jump? Cocoon raise? Steel?

Weather doesn't look great this weekend but will they be working?

Thanks

Seems like a cocoon raising soon, and they don't usually work on weekends.
