Okay so far I have found many locations where the tower can be seen from more than 30 miles. 3 in Morristown, NJ, all 31-36 miles, one in Fairfield, CT which is 42 miles, and one in Jackson, NJ from Kingda Ka, which is 45 miles.

Possible the higher altitude lol. As the tower gets narrower, shouldn't there be less steel going up? (although the floors get much taller..) Also, do the glass window panes get bigger?

Their 'stamps' are all their union assessments (annuity, vacation, etc)...they've been getting paid their basic hourly pay but everything else is about 9wks behind. Several of the workers rely on their vacation fund for their mortgage pmts. There was talk of possibly working this past Saturday because of the time lost due to weather throughout the week. It was decided not to because their stamps are still so far behind. They've been talking about guys volunteering to take time off because with the stamps so far behind they can't afford to lay anyone off - when you're laid-off, they have to pay you everything you're owed including your stamps to date. Lets see if i can explain it as clear as possible. Every week a worker gets his pay envelope that contains his weekly paycheck for x-amount of straight time and x-amount of overtime,if in fact they have worked overtime that week. Also included in that envelope are stamps, similar to the old trading stamps,if you're old enough to remember those. Those stamps reflect those straight and overtime hours and are used to show proof of hours worked so they can be credited toward retirement and medical benefits. Those stamps are placed in a book for every year. When it comes time to retire, the said worker will have a book for every year worked. For instance,if the guy retires after 35 years,he should have 35 yearly books he turns in and retirement is based on the number of stamps in each book. Not many locals use the stamp books anymore. Most locals have gone to an electronic system nowadays. I will say though that it,in my opinion is a better way. I hope that helps a bit.

First, benefit compensation is no longer called "stamps", they are vouchers.
The voucher + wages equal approximately $3100.00 per week for a journeyman Ironworker not including compensation and liability insurance. In the case of tower 1 and tower 4 the fabricator of the steel is also the steel erector and the metal deck purchaser. This company is responsible for a tremendous amount of money (per week) for labor and suppliers. If the Port Authority or Silverstein Properties does not pay the fabricator/erector in a timely manner, then they can not be expected to meet their obligations. Credit lines can only go so far, I know because I have been on both sides of this issue.

If you mean how do you know when it's topped out: You just connect the lines. This is the simpliest building you could find that pretains to it being completed and when.
If you mean exactly 350 meters: I guess you can't tell without the cranes. But there's not much the cranes tell you anyway.

Not yet. It would at the next jump. 350 meters=1,158 feet.
If you want to know when it would be topped off it would be early 2012.

Actually, 'exactly' 60 feet!!! The top of the spire on the Bank of America Tower is 1,198 feet... So 1,198 - 1,138 = 60 feet right on!!! :)

What methods are the P.A. taking to ensure that 1 WTC is a "green" building? Will it collect rainwater to filter around the plumbing system,or have solar panels in the top to power a particular portion of the building? The first design featured windmills. What will the most definite renewable resource they will pay attention to?
THE BIG APPLE
Dec 16, 2011, 6:01 AM
The entire WTC will have fuel cells, a device that converts (chemical energy to electrical) will generate 4.8 million watts per hour. The glass (curtain wall) these days is also looked at as energy efficent, minimizing the use of electricity, for most of the day, and letting the sunlight come in, but also blocking the UV rays. Also building will use offsite wind and hydro power. The cooling systems will reclaim rainwater. LEED Gold.
