In my opinion One World Trade Center's observation deck should have the same name (Top of the World Observatory) and style as the one in the South Tower of the original World Trade Center before 9/11. Anything else would be rather disrespectful because it erases the history of the site. It shouldn't be different. Why are we trying to pretend 9/11 never happened?

Here is the South Tower's observation deck. Note the difference between this and the videos above.

When you look down from new 1WTC you see the holes in the ground where once 1 and 2 WTC stood.
So when standing on the enw observatory deck, pretending that 9/11 never happened is not an option.

9/11 DID happen, and it changed the world. We experience that every day in our daily lives.
Letting it never happen again, that's the point in our present days.

You're kidding right? This observation deck has nothing to do with the old observation deck, or the history of the site. Designing the observation deck like the old one, in my opinion, "erases history"...it would be as if nothing happened when dwelling inside.

What the Hell are you guys arguing about now?

The view is as close as you can get to pre 9/11 considering the building is on a different plot of land, the observation deck is indoors like the south tower, the view is some ways even better than before with many more buildings to look at.

Seeing the memorial plaza will ALWAYS be a reminder of 9/11. If you miss seeing that from the new observatory your blind.:koko:

You could not just build an exact duplicate of the old trade center without bringing up alot of bad memories, keeping the site a one big flat park would have suited the families better than new tall skyscrapers, what was built was a compormise of ideas.....No plan of rebuilding there could make everyone happy and have no complaints that it should have been built different.

I like the digital elevators as a cool effect, I dont quite understand the long rock wall entryway to the elevators, I agree the video of the new deck looks like a community college computer annimation meets the sims project, lets just hope the real thing is done with more class than the bad computer animation shows.

2 Questions on the observation deck-
-Does anyone know where the enterance to the observation deck elevators is going to be located in the building?
(Will you enter the main building lobby or through some outdoor location to access the observation deck?)
-What is the purpose of the long underground tunnel....other than to hold a long line of visitors?

Why would we try to recreate what was lost? Your view reminds me of those people who wanted us to simply rebuild the complex the way it was.

9/11 DID happen. Everything changed that day. Clinging to the past is not the way to honor it.

i just can't deal with the base, it just doesn't go with the rest of the glass . The shade of color it emits vis a vis the rest of the tower is just not happening. I guess if we focus on floors 20-105 we are good, just make believe the base that the concoction on the top arent there and we're good

I am saying the new observation deck erases history by not having anything similar to the old observation deck in the South Tower.

They did enough by having the building as similar to the originals as it is. It's not a rebuilding of the twins. This is a different building, and it will have an observation deck. The original observation deck also wasn't located in tower 1.

Then entrance to the deck will be from West Street (the west side of the building). As far as the "long" line, they are going to have to walk to get to the "skypods" anyway. The graphics give them something to look at (and learn) along the way. They could use some of that at the Empire State.

I would like to say that burying an opinion is not cool. I personally am not satisfied with the base cladding yet, but could change my mind later. I don't like the complaining either, but being this is a forum, we're entitled to an opinion. I would much rather accrual criticism like this than the "We should have twin 1WTC's" over and over and over again! Once these temporary parts come off the spire, I think will look nice.

The more I'm looking at the glass at the base as moe is added, and from farther off, the more I'm beginning to sense an almost ceramic glazed vibe to it.
We haven't yet apparently found out what the lighting down there's going to do yet. How the LED will go at both extremes of the building will no doubt be something to see. It'll be just as good as, though, (and hopefully better than) the "dueling psycho-lightsabers" at BofA and 4XSQ.

Haha, you just read my mind... when I saw the thread was up to page 1541 the first thing I thought of was the old Commodore 1541 disk drive... pictured in your post :D

I don't think they actually used them in the old observation deck did they? Lol, I was there in 1987 and I don't remember any computers at all up there, all I remember is the old observation deck had a kind of cheesy 70s vibe, although needless to say the view was terrific (and it's great to see it again in all these new posts).

I found the base cladding to be jarring as more was filled in. The cohesiveness just wasn't there, but then I realized that that this is not the final form of the base. The final look will have the glass protruding out in vertical fins, which should turn out looking quite nice; guess they are waiting for all the work to be done before adjusting the glass fins.

hey Patrick lighten up:rolleyes:. I've watched the damn thing go up since it was below street level and that's my opinion and i have a right to post it. I'm not on here constantly complaining about anything, in fact, the building itself i think is fabulous but they struck out with the spear on the top and the base but as someone else with a bit more tact than you that posted above said, it's incomplete so we will wait to see what it looks like when completed, maybe then it will blend with the rest of the glass. As far as pretending the thing on the top and the base not being there, it was a joke, man:shrug:

With three rings growing up the antenna seems much more beautiful.

It 's impressive how the provisional rings between the blocks of the antenna are absolutely invasive, even from far, in the aesthetics of the antenna.
I'm impatient to see them cut off they are ugly!!!

U know, I understand ur enthusiasm, but for me - when I look down a block like that (Wall Street and street in that area_ - I'm expecting to see the WTC. For the new generation, it's not so much like that for them, but for those off us (or should I say myself) when I/we c the replacement structure, the emotional scares are ever-present. It's a reminder that their are still people that hate us out there. And that they will do whatever they have to disrupt my way of life.
I think 1 WTC is a beautiful building, but lossing the old buildings is like loosing a love one to a certain extentd...

Those white dishes are microwave dishes and they may be grey in real world. I am unaware of any deals yet by Durst/PA with anyone for microwave dishes. They will be installed by each lessee when they do a deal, so don't expect it to look like renderings. For example some one may want a dish pointing to Vernon valley satellite farm, so 1 or 2 will go in on west side.

4 sections is 1 side, we are being impacted so much by wind, it is hard to predict when you lose hours each day. The weather has been so harsh this year. We would like to get the rest of spire up this month, if only mother nature cooperates, then finish rest of rings, guy the tower by june and start taking temporary steel down etc.

I think for a lot of people 1WTC, and the new WTC as a whole, is like remarrying after your first wife was murdered after almost 30 years of marriage. Is she as special as the first? No, at least not yet. Is she flawed? Yes. Could you have done better? Maybe. But she is also quite lovely, and in a subtle way reminds you of your previous wife. She is there to help you heal, and she is someone new to love. She didn't exactly turn out the way we thought she would or how we thought she should have, but she is still beautiful and she is still special.

Alan told me on a previous post they hope to finish the spire this month, followed by the rest of the ring then the guy wires by June...so we shall see!

I've lived in NYC for over two years now, but I'd never been up any of its skyscrapers until today. It was one of the most surreal experiences, like looking at an enormous, detailed photograph.

I can't wait to see 1 WTC from this height when it's finished. That perfectly triangular wedge of light will be incredible!

Ooh ok got it, we'll that sounds good to me some family of mine will be out in June so I'm hoping to show them a mostly complete outside! Thanks for the info!

The winds wiped out this morning's planned work, wanted to get stuff done before memorial opened at 10am but winds just were too high, so work canceled. That is why it is so hard to make any sort of scheduled date for stuff now. Between rain and wind, it is not feasible.

As a weather enthusiast and someone who wants to become a meteorologist in the future, I follow the weather closely in the NYC area. Unfortunately it may remain a bit gusty tomorrow, but Tuesday should feature lighter winds.

I wonder if they'll need to take the original crane down to do the guys. Once they get to the lighter upper sections, it seems like they wouldn't need it anymore.

I know I'm a minority of one here, but Beekman always looked like somebody forgot to flatten the wrinkles out of the blueprints.

The rings, if you were to count them, are what brings the levels up to 108. But they likely won't be counted as official floors.

From watching the video several pages back,, looks like the observation deck will be considerably lower than the original,, from the looks of it there's roughly a dozen more rows of windows to the roof,, "above" the observatory deck,, just seems like It should be at the very top (or close as possible).. Anybody know for sure? but I'd guess the public deck is 100ft lower than the original South tower Outdoor deck? I think that sucks!!! Or are there gong to be 2 obs deck's, the slightly less expensive 1 (lower), then the higher (closer to the roof) more expensve? I know the SWFC is set up like that.

Aha, no problem, and you were right on with your edited post, the lower part of OWO is going to be maybe 80-100 below and then the higher, more expensive part will be about 25-50 feet below

Well, the observation deck is at 1266 ft. The Top row of windows hits 1368 ft.

That is 102 ft lower than the top row of windows and about 120 ft lower than the outdoor observation deck on the South tower.

For reference, that is about 40 ft higher than the ESB 102nd floor observatory.
Its also 87 ft lower than the Sears Tower Obs deck and ~200 ft lower than the CN tower's skypod.

Actually, it is 32 feet lower than Windows on the World in the the old tower one and it is also 112 feet shorter than the outdoor platform on the old tower two. Also, it is 135 feet shorter than the highest walking area on the building which will is the the highest ring's platform on this building.

Apr 8, 2013, 3:37 PM
We'll have 3 observatory floors, yeah? The ESB has two - outdoors (86th) and indoors (102nd). ESB's 102nd fl observatory is neat in concept, but pretty meh in real life. But the outdoors is cool... the fact you can walk around the perimeter of the floor :) Top of the Rock's observatory is definitely my current favorite... the fact that their 3-level observatory goes inwards and that they have plexiglass(?) walls instead of the fencing on ESB's 86th fl observatory. So if you still occasionally have a tough time with heights like I do, it makes you feel more at ease. (though ESB's observatories were also fine for me, height-wise)

I think, once 1 WTC's observatory finally opens, it'll be a pretty nice experience for these of us who missed out on visiting the original twins... This will also be a pretty fun experience, getting an entirely different view of Manhattan (as opposed to visiting the current observatories in midtown) I missed out on the original twins, sadly... I was 16 at the time of 9/11. Really wish I could have gotten to go to NYC before then :(

Another thing I've been wondering... why haven't they been cladding the panels immediately next to the service elevator (on the east side), starting with the mechanical floors? Just curious. I feel better that they're finally cladding that huge gap on the west side... but now we have that! lol :D

the communications ring progress is great to see! I think the spire and ring will look great after all is said and done. Radome or not.

Well, if the communication rings don't work out, it looks like they can simply turn it into the world's highest rollercoaster! HANDS UP EVERYONE! SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAM!!!!!!!

Second of third communications ring being installed:

The communication ring seems more significant than it did in the renders, and for my money it's already making a world of difference for the spire. It's a transition from the gleaming surfaces of the tower into a more industrial (but still graceful) frame of reference, in which the spire fits.

The fact that the exoskeletal support rings on the spire are now exposed actually creates a nice relationship -- concentric rings above and within the bigger rings of the comm rig -- that would not have existed if the radome was still there. That's not to suggest that this version is better than the radome-covered version (although I'm one of the minority who never liked it much), but I think it will wind up being more cohesive than we all anticipated when the change was announced.

As some have said, though, I'd still love to see it all treated with the brushed steel look of the beacon.

From what it looks like, it seems that they're starting to disassemble the elevator on the east side and also the base cladding on the south side is *done*

*Done* meaning they didn't put in the row closest to the opening yet

Actually, it is 32 feet lower than Windows on the World in the the old tower one and it is also 112 feet shorter than the outdoor platform on the old tower two. Also, it is 135 feet shorter than the highest walking area on the building which will is the the highest ring's platform on this building.

I think they should change the design of Tower Two and make it an essential twin of Tower One (sans Spire), and establish an outdoor observatory on top of it, name it "Two World Observatory".

A healthy competition with One World Observatory is expected because it provides sheer cityscape, outdoor view, not any artificial, guided experience (tunnels and holograms, etc.)

Also, people could call them West and East Towers, respecting and even renovating the way North and South Towers were named after.

Never gonna happen, they can't at this point without having to tear apart the foundations already there and start from scratch. Also, tower 2 is the most spectacular of all the new towers and should be and hopefully will be left untouched:)

I think most people are simply "rationalizers". They simply affirm the reality, they rationalize what is happening. They bash what is not likely to happen.

Nevertheless, foundations could be modified, probably no need to start from scratch. and even there is a group of Twin Towers advocates planning to tear down both foundations of Tower 2 and 3 and make 111-story new Twin Towers. Then, it's far more probable to simply change the design of 2 WTC.

I think the current 2 WTC design, the most deconstructivist building in the complex, looks like being cut off by a samurai sword, and we don't know whether Libeskind's wedge of light concept gonna work or not due to the frequent height and design changes of surrounding buildings. After all, it's Foster's design and not Libeskind one.

Remember the past moments when both initial sky garden latticework and sky windmill designs for Tower 1 had been scrapped? That's why we have the current Twin-Towers reminiscent, octagonal antiprism design 1 WTC.

Anyway, only the foundations has been built and the design could be changed, only if people don't give up.

I think the 2 wtc is very beautiful, but it must be the protagonist of a another complex buildings.
Having the one wtc wtc and 2 wtc in the same project is like having two rooster in the same chicken coop

He's the king of the world.

I mentioned earlier that the top ring ( or any of them ) would have made a really cool observation deck. But that wasn't possible.

But back to the antenna, when the final piece is placed on top, and its clear just how ridiculous this thing looks, I wonder if Durst will see that as justification or regret.

Weather is awfully nice for the last few days.... sure would be nice if the final peice were to rise soon.

I see 1 WTC every day (I work at 1 liberty) and I really don't mind the spire as is. It's not ideal to be sure, but it doesn't honestly look awful in person and is still extremely imposing.

I would obviously prefer the radone cover, but it is what it is and it doesn't look bad. It looks like most other spires/masts/whateverthehecks in the city, so it fits in.

Welcome back Dominator, (wondering where you been,) now to clear up the observation deck question? There will be 2 decks? one that is 2 floors high, the one's just above the maintainance grooves and 1 perhaps 10 floors higher? That's what I'm getting out of the responses... And for photo 30887 NYC4life's photo, is that the last ring that's partial, or is there another 1 going on top of that one??, I thought that was the 3rd and last, but his render says 2nd of 3 rings,,?? Just wondering if thats the top ring or not?
