Back on top: With beam in place, World Trade Center main tower is officially NYC's tallest building

The unfinished 1 World Trade Center officially became the tallest building in New York at 2:12 p.m. today after workers reached the 100th floor. The building will top out at 104 floors.

Conditions were good and the main tower at the redeveloped World Trade Center site surpassed the Empire State Building as New York City’s tallest skyscraper this afternoon. “We’re good to go,” said Steve Coleman earlier today, a spokesman for the agency, adding the winds would not hinder today's event. “It is happening.” ]

The World Trade Center is again the tallest building in New York one year after the killing of Osama bin Laden and more than 10 years after the attacks that brought them down. It is still a work in progress: The hulking steel structure known as the Freedom Tower is still 500 feet shorter than it will be when complete.

Lower Manhattan is the fastest-growing residential neighborhood in New York, with young families choosing to move into what had been a ghost town after dark for much of the past century. Businesses are relocating to Lower Manhattan as well, including many future tenants flocking to the Freedom Tower. Where George Washington took the oath of office, at Federal Hall, is again a vibrant crossroads at all hours.

Destruction is easy. Any determined idiot can do it. Building is hard work but infinitely more interesting. It is an expression of faith in the future.

We have been down a long road since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. And too often, the daily work of rebuilding does not get its due. But it is the main event, evidence of how we honor the past while moving on with life.

Today the Empire State building lost the crown for the second time in world history as the tallest building in New York City, first time in 1970 to the original north World trade Center tower and then 42 years later to the second World trade Center replacement buidling.

Such a wonderful momentous day for everyone! The WTC has reclaimed its rightful place in the skyline of NYC, and this is only the beginning. Before long, it will top out I can't wait for that ceremony it will be even better, when it finally reaches the same height as the old wtc.

Once complete, the 104-story “Freedom Tower” will hit 1,776 feet — making it the tallest building in the United States and third tallest in the world. The 104 floors will reach 1,368 feet — the same height as the north tower of the original World Trade Center — but a 408-foot, cable-secured spire with an antenna will be added to make it a symbolic 1,776 feet, representing the year the nation was founded.

The Council on Tall Buildingsan international industry group, says the mast will count toward the building’s height because it isn’t a stand-alone antenna. “This is something we have discussed with the architect,” said council spokesman Nathaniel Hollister. “As we understand it, the needle is an architectural spire which happens to enclose an antenna. We could thus count it as part of the architectural height.

Mayor Bloomberg lauded the milestone. “The New York City skyline is, once again, stretching to new heights,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “Today our city has a new tallest building and a new sense of how bright our future is.”

Very proud of these guys, and all of the construction workers accross the city that help put the skyline in place.

I agree. Ultimate office space, I'm tellin' ya. I'd LOVE an office with that kind of view. :)

But - I'm wondering - will they have any kind of filter in place on the windows for sunrise/sunset? They'll be pretty but also be distracting for these with east/west-facing windows at a high altitude since 1 WTC is essentially all glass.

Also, I just have to observe... WOW!! It's so surreal hearing "One World Trade Center" in the media once again. Surreal... But nice! :)

The steel that they are installing seems rather shorter than the other loads before. Why?

Also, seems like the pace is speeding up, glass seems to be going in a new row every three days, steel installation is going quicker than the normal 3 weeks, and maybe base glass will be installed.

Great to see it pass the Empire State building. Next milestone..the topping out of the roof! A quick question, I know with the parapet on top of the roof slab, the final height will be 1,368 ft the same as the old towers. But exactly how tall will it be just to the flat roof slab (without the parapet)? Will the topping out occur before or after the parapet is installed?

Roof slab is at 1,334'-8" above Ground Floor Slab. Topping out will ocur when they reach the top of parapet.

Topping off is the ceremony when they hoist the final steel beam that would make up the roof. It basically means that the structure of the building is done. The spire and mast doesn't count, and neither does the parapet.

Officially the topping out ceremony should occur once the last piece of the mast's structure is erected: the beacon.
http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg842/scaled.php?server=842&filename=020ssq.jpg&res=landing

But due to the nature of this project, they're going to celebrate the parapet erection.

So exactly how connected to the roof will the parapet be? I mean, is it just basically a superficial structural thing, sitting on top of the roof slab, or will it be somehow interconnected with the roof slab itself, if that makes sense?

The parapet structure is formed basically by the perimeter columns extending 33 feet above the roof slab with spandrel beams spanning between columns.

"Officially the topping out ceremony should occur once the last piece of the mast's structure is erected: the beacon."

These columns look smaller than the usual, but since this is 102, the next jump goes to 104 right?
We're not on mechanical floors right?
Considering Otie said the roof is 1,334.

Previous 1,244
After 1,271

So Next is 1,271
then 1,334?

104 floor is 1,313 feet but in my opinion that is a 42 foot jump and that seems to high for me considering they never did a jump that high before.
