A waste of energy - and space - is you complaining about what people compain about. If you want to comment on the tower, that's fine. That you think no one else should have an opinion or comment is ridiculous.

I won't continue to point out that people have a right to voice their opinions on the tower, like or dislike. If you don't like the commentary, you don't have to, but that's your problem and no concern of anyone else's.

I have to agree and say I do think 1 WTC is cheating and the antenna will be ugly. At the same time given the cost of the tower and somewhat soft demand for office space, I have to say I understand the need to cut costs. I am hoping they at least light it up like the ones on 4 Times Square and One Bryant Park.

I noticed that certain parts of the mast are covered in steel while others are exposed. I think it would look 10x better if they covered the exposed lattice parts. It would also reflect better during the day and shine brighter at night. See what I mean:

The bitter irony to me is that, if they do end up re-painting the antenna (to give it a metallic finish) whenever it starts to rust or just to maintain that style yearly would probably cost a lot more in the long term than just putting the damn radome enclosure back on because we all know the reasoning behind its removal.

I'm honestly tired of this render. It is overly simplistic, and I mean WAY too simplified. There are no completely round sections, the first two cylindrical sections in the render are actually eight sided plate with rectangular openings for transmitting equipment. The next section is square (likely tubular lattice), and the last before the beacon section is five sided, also with cutouts for equipment. The platform like pieces that jut out from the sides will carry the LED fixtures and are designed to hold up the now cancelled radome. I modeled the two eight sided sections already, minus interior ladders and platforms. They are available in the links below my messages. I just want people to know what to expect. Nothing against any one.

They will all be similar in the sense that they will all be uplit by color-changing LED fixtures, but I would say the actual appearance you should expect to see for 1WTC will be closer to the look of 4Times Square than One Bryant Park.

IK, Durst's plan is really shortsighted.

Completely devoid of logic. Not only is Durst making the maintenance more costly (if that ends up being the case w/ the antenna) but he's also jeopardizing the tower's official height.

All this is for $20 million...

What happened to David Childs making an alternate spire design? Did he just give up or something?

Hopefully as time goes on and technology advances, they'll be able to renovate the antenna someday to improve aesthetics. Once the cranes are taken down, it'll probably be nearly impossible to add a radome enclosure in the future, and the only hope will be to rely on improvements in construction technology. I'm anticipating that this building will out-live the Great Pyramids, and it deserves so much more.

It wouldn't be that hard. Each section of any cladding wouldn't be much harder to install than a broadcast antenna. But it won't happen. The antennas they put up there would have had to be designed and installed with cladding in mind. They're not going to disrupt service for all their customers to add cladding later.
And the great pyramids will still be around 5,000 years from now.

The difference is shown here. I think he was referencing disrupting service for the construction workers. But I don't think that would be the case.
The radome itself wouldn't hurt anything, but its not going to happen.

I thought that they simply removed the radome, and what we are seeing right now is what would have been concealed beneath it.

The structure is almost the same, but the design and placement of antennas will probably be different. The windloading will be different without the cladding, But I don't think the resign was much more than removing the cladding mounting structure. Just a guess. I've done plenty of towers, but never worked on anything like the original spire design.
I just hope any antennas aren't mounted too far from the mast. It could get ugly fast. The farther out you put an omni broadcast antenna, the less of a shadow the mast makes.

30 minutes west of the city and we only have about 5-6 inches so far, but apparently the worst of this is still to come.

I think the city has honestly been spared most of the snow to this point, Long Island has it somewhat bad and MA and CT are the ones getting hammered.

I don't even know why they need that diagram comparison. The tower wasn't built to be the tallest in the world, though it would have been if built earlier when it was supposed to.
What they should be looking at is a diagram of New York's planned towers.

Just wondering if they are going to paint the antenna with anything, or is it already galavnized steel protecting it from the elements? Hard to believe they would not cover it with anything at all, unless the pre-fabricated sections are already coated in something?

What date will this building officially open? What date will the observation deck officially open? It took 6 years to complete 1wtc & 4wtc, not bad! It will probably take another 3-4 years to build 2wtc & 3wtc, considering their foundations are fully complete. So around 2020 everything should look normal and settled in and we can enjoy, work, live and play in downtown nyc as intended.

The color of the spire is pretty dull. How will it be illuminated? Are there going to be lights shining up on it from the roof?

Not from the roof itself. There are a good number of fixtures to be mounted to a catwalk surrounding the base of the mast. Those, along with additional fixtures mounted on the bottom and top communication rings will uplight the mast all the way up to Section 8 (where the guy-wires attach). The rest of the mast will be uplit by fixtures encircling the mast on each of the platforms at 40' increments, ending with the platform at the bottom of section 16.

My understanding is that it will be lit in white in normal usage, and the color LEDs won't be used except for special occasions/holidays. I don't anticipate a lot of continual color-shifting on ordinary days like you'd see at 4 Times Square (Conde Nast bldg), because this is a special and more meaningful piece of historic architecture, and I think there is a sense that sometimes less is more, and this is a building that won't need all of that color-changing to stand out in the Manhattan skyline. It will do that on it's own. Also, with the horizontal beacon at the top rotating and shooting out in all directions, I think having a continual color-shift going on at the same time will be overkill.
That's just my impression from what I've been hearing regarding the limited use of the color.

Having said all that, at the end of the day this is a Durst property and they seem to have a love-affair with color-changing light shows on their other antennae in NYC, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Childs seems pretty impressed with the color LEDs as well....see article from 2011 http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/nyc_lightens_up_z6IxU26uv5Xx5mBI5KgQkI#ixzz1f0qZFxmo

It won't be invisible. And that is part of the problem with the design. All you need to know is that what we are seeing was supposed to be hidden. That sums it up nicely.

So the rest of the spire will be assembled above that platform, on temp stairs? Thats like 40 stories of temp stairs,, I don't think I'd like that job. Off topic why when you go to the opening of ssp, when you click on highest bldgs of 2013, 2WTC is gone, and 3 WTC, is there saying U/C. I thought they were both capped at 7 stories or so and stuck until tenants committ, I would hope 2 WTC would be built before 3,, I would think 2WTC would be NY'ers more of a demand or priority, because it's the taller, more radical, and the nicest of the 5 bldgs,, but that's (and I heard a lot of other's agree) my opinion. People already voiced their wanting new twin towers, (Years ago, But as everybody knows that's not possible anymore), but if they built WTC2 first,, I think a LOT more people would be satisfied. And if they had to scrap one, I think more ppl would rather see 3 put on hold, and have 2 be the one they start next. At Least I think 2 is the coolest of them all.

And if they had to scrap one, I think more ppl would rather see 3 put on hold, and have 2 be the one they start next. At Least I think 2 is the coolest of them all.

yes now that the Tower is 95% done I cant wait to see the
final 5%......

What Happens To Snow On Top Of The Freedom Tower?

February 12th, 2013

We’ve witnessed several pieces of the Freedom Tower be either hoisted up or slowly dropped down below to the ground again, but it is still thrilling to watch. It is a wonder
to see the skill with which the crane operator pulls heavy objects through the tight and windy sky without breaking windows. Anyway, we watched a big dumpster being pulled
up to the top of the Trade Center. The big kind of dumpster that scares drivers on the highway to the point where nobody with half a brain will follow close behind.

Just look at that reflection in the Freedom Tower…

We wondered what the dumpster was being brought up on a Sunday for. Then we looked below and saw what the crews were doing with the dumpsters at street level.

The construction crews needed to put all of the snow that stuck to the roof of the Freedom Tower into something in order to safely remove it so that they could get back
to actually building the building. It’s not like they could simply shovel it over the side of the building.
