Port Authority To Seek Ideas For WTC Observation Deck
January 24, 2012
Later this month, the Port Authority will be sending out requests for design proposals for the observation deck atop the new One World Trade Center.
It will be three glass-enclosed floors – the 100th, 101st and 102nd.
“We think, frankly, that the One World Trade Center observation deck is going to be the leading observation deck experience in the world, period,” said Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye. “We expect there’s going to be robust interest from companies in the United States and internationally.”
Foye says this time around, there are no plans to have any of the floors open to the air.

Such a travesty that Windows won't be occupying one of those floors, however I'm excited to see what they come up with in a design for the observations deck - I'm sure they won't disappoint.

Port Authority To Seek Ideas For WTC Observation Deck

Three floors for the observation deck? Really now. I can understand two floors, but I really think they are making a mistake by not putting in any kind of restaurant or bar on one of those floors. Someone should tell them to leave one of those floors bare as event space/future restaurant space.*
*Yes, yes. The restaurant service elevator is gone. Another foolish decision.

Keep in mind those spaces aren't "huge". The deck at Rockefeller Center (30 Rock) is three levels also. Meanwhile, the main deck at the Empire State is cramped with tourists. They are expecting the same amount or more at the WTC, so I think it will work in our favor.

I agree. Three would be needed at the very least, maybe even more tourists than ESB gets.
did the olf WTC have an observation deck on both towers? If so than three is easily justified as the old towers also had a larger floorplate to work with.

No. The South Tower only had an indoor and outdoor observation deck that occupied about two floors called the Top Of The World Observatory, but the North Tower had the Windows On The World Restaurant at the top floor and then telecommunication equipment up at the top including the mast. No observation deck existed on the former North Tower.

I remembered reading that they left an empty floor in Two World Trade Center for some kind of future even space or etc. Maybe a restaurant might go up there.

The same elevators that would work for the observation decks will be also work the small eateries. I'm not talking about full fledged restaurants, just a small food court in one of the floors, like the original 2 WTC had. I don't know what they are planing for 1 WTC, but I hope they realize that people aren't just gonna visit for the views. Like one of the posts had said before, this will be New York's largest obs deck and is expected to have many visitors. I just want this to be awesome.

I highly doubt it. The Empire State Building has no restaurants at the top, but it has an observation deck proving that it is successful, and if I remembered correctly the South Tower eateries and bars also had an elevator for that job which the new One World Trade Center doesn't have. I think the best hope for any restaurant would be at World Trade Center Tower 2 since you can change the design to include a service elevator, and since the top floors passes the 1,300 foot mark it would offer the same views as the Windows On The World Restaurant in the North Tower had.

Yeah, I read somewhere that around this time, the sunspots are most powerful. That positively factors in with temperature. Solar flares are more frequent for certtain weeks in an 11 year solar cycle. This is one of those weeks, and hopefully a warmer environment will speed up productivity. Sorry if it's off topic, I just wanted to explain why the weather's been so nice. Here's the link I found the article on: http://idealab.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/01/strongest-solar-storm-in-years-is-visual-stunner.php

Thanks. Yes it might. If it's steel headed and parked at the site it will be raised sooner or later. The Port Authority reported that they have been having trouble with the wind up there, the lack of steel arriving from DSM, and the trouble with moving the worker trailers higher and higher up. This is what is causing the delays to One World Trade Center.

In the original WTC, the Top of the World observatory had at least one snack shop. I would be VERY surprised if the new WTC's observation deck didn't have one. You don't need a massive service elevator, especially if they serve pre-prepared food.

I think in time they will put a food court or some place to eat on top of Tower 1 although it may not be a restaurant but it could be similar to what the South Tower had which was Nathan's or Sbarros. I mean the Tower should have three decks I think that's a good idea. I heard the observation deck will open summer of '14 so that would make sense because the building is scheduled for late '13 or early '14.

You can't unless if there is a freight/service elevator which once again it doesn't have. The original North and South Tower of the World Trade Center had one, but the new one does not. I know how everyone wants to eat a quarter of a mile in the sky, but the Port Authority will not allow it.

I have to agree with this, where's your social life folks?
Anyways, for those interested, work with hotel containers is almost done, today they removed the final trusses that supported them. In the next few days new steel will arrive, not columns but floor and filler beams for floors 89th and 90th; after that metal deck work is next. Once this stage is complete, columns for 91 & 91M will arrive.

Otie, where did you find out that the 91st floor had a mezzanine level because from Zen's prints it said only floors 92, 93, and 102 have mezzanine levels above the actual floors. Plus in some of your old diagrams I didn't see any 91M so I was just curious.

From what I understand, it will be early in '14. This building isn't supposed to be opened until late '13, so I don't think, that is because of a delay. After the skin is clad all the way to the top late this year, it'll still take about a year to finish, the internal work. 2014 will be an awesome year. Tower 1 will be done. The Super Bowl will be in MetLife Stadium in February. Does anybody think we can have an all New York Super Bowl? Jets vs. Giants? Maybe with the Manning Bros. I don't mean to start any rumours, however with Peyton likely not long for Indy, maybe, just maybe he can be the 'other' Manning, on the other NY football team. My apologies for going astray and off topic here, but this could be an omen for a very significant watershed period in NY. 2014. Watch out!

Carlos. Can you put arrows to floor 89 in the picture of 1WTC. I know the top beams are for floor 90 but floor 89 is the 1st 20'+ floor. The 2 levels of beams behind the blue netting don't look 20' apart. I think the 2nd ones down are for the curtian wall and floor 89 is at the bottom of the blue netting. Is that wrong?

As I mentioned earlier, Top of the Rock has 3 decks, and it's a better experience than going to the ESB with it's longer (2 hr) lines. A restaurtant would have been nice as well, but with the money the ESB is raking in with its deck, I think it's the way to go for now.

I took this yesterday from Greystone Park in Morristown, NJ. Nearly 40 miles away and the tower is still quite visible over the hills in the distance. I keep finding new places where NY can be seen and im sure theres alot more to be discovered.......:)

Very nice Otie. But it would suprise me if the antenna configuration was like that when it's finished. It's kind of 90s, before fiber took over most of the microwave link business. Those round enclosures must be 10 feet tall. Room enough to house dozens of smaller elements each. That ring would be a great place for some of the fancy spot beam data services you see in other countries.
Never heard of "Electronic news gathering antennas".
I imagine a lot of the configuration will depend on if they get the broadcasters back.
Any idea if they're building it from the top down and jacking it up? I have no idea about how they will build the Spire, but it WILL BE VERY INTERESTING to see going up! Can't wait!

I think right the opposite, the more you ask, the less ignorant you'll be. DCM has ordered to the steel shop to fabricate the mast steel more than 6 months ago.
First of all, let me clarify that once the tower reaches the roof, work will be devided in two separate projects: construction of the antenna with the erection of the roof and installing the mechanical systems.
Antenna
The antenna alone will weight about 400 tons and it will be assembled in 7 stacked sections that decrease in diameter the higher they go, there's an 8th section that will sit up above the rest that will form the beacon, the top of the 8th section will mark the 1776' elevation from Main Lobby.
These sections are all different between them, some of them will have as much as 20 sides while others will only have 4 sides, some will have a lattice steel structure while others will be made of steel plates with cut-out zones. The mast includes a variety of fabrication and construction methods so that transmission equipment can be inserted into it and can also give attachment points for antenna and satellite dishes.
The transition between sections will be achieved by using cast-steel connectors, this solves the problem of placing a structure above another one with different geometries.
The antenna will be anchored to the roof slab with 8 Kevlar guy wires, each of them being 8" thick. These cables will be made of aramid, a synthetic fiber that does not obstruct broadcast signal. (See picture below)

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7367/a05o.jpg
Radome Enclosure
The radome enclosure was necessary not only for aesthetic purposes but will also solve practical issues with the antenna and the wind loads.
The enclosure will have attached stiffness due to the 2.5" thick panels made of fiberglass and foam (See picture below), this stiffness will help resist the wind load. Fiberglass and foam are radio-frequency “transparent” materials, and were selected in order to avoid problems with the broadcasting equipment.
http://img.nauticexpo.com/images_ne/photo-g/sandwich-panel-fiberglass-pvc-foam-189053.jpg
Fiberglass-and-foam sandwich panel
The enclosure will also help protect personel at the maintenance areas inside the spire (platforms) and its repeating modular system will allow easy replacement in case they need to replace any section.
The radome will be assembled in 20 foot sections, all of them consisting of octagonal modules.
For further wind support, large helices or stakes will wrap the radome and will direct wind away from the mast, mitigating vortex shading and reducing structural fatigue. This, along with the guy wires, will help reduce the range of deflection to as much as 0.5 degrees in a constant 50 mile-per-hour wind,an engineering achievement...
Crown, or Communication Platform Ring
The three-level circular lattice ring will house microwave dishes, ENG antennas and whip-type radio antennas that television companies will use.
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9811/a06n.jpg
The Window Washing Track consists of 3 circular tracks located just below the lower platform ring and above the parapet line, it will allow three window-washing cranes to ride on it. These cranes will have telescoping arms, they will look similar to the Burj Khalifa's boom units (see image below).

Do you know what I look forward to? Aside from visiting the tower during my yearly NYC visits, of course..I look forward to when it is topped out, and a maintenance man or someone who is lucky enough to be outside on the roof doing work takes video of the amazing view, and posts it online for all to see! Once it is finished, we can hope the antenna guys who have to be outside on the top to work on the various equipment will take some video as well. I recall one or two amazing videos posted on youtube by some workers who were actually on the North Tower roof, truly an amazing sight, without any of the barriers! Actually, when the topping out itself occurs in a few months, we will hopefully see some video by some of the workers or PA near the top outside taken and posted. That will be such a cool thing to see!

Nice photo, but I'm so sick of that overused filter.
I'm assuming you are referring to HDR photography(which I would normally agree with you in that case, because it is normally applied very, very liberally or in the simple tone-mapped method that results in glowing halos surrounding dark objects) but this particular shot is not the result of any filter or quick effect in photoshop. What he's done is take a series of long exposures and combine them to create a very balanced shot; this is what many HDR "filters" or processes are meant to create, but are often abused by amateurs. The lenth of exposure allows a lot of light and color to fill in the gaps that you normally wouldn't see in a photo. It looks surreal because you aren't used to seeing this much detail in a night time shot- honestly I think it's one of the best shots I've seen of NYC I've seen here in quite some time.

What does the upper floors cladding have to do with floor 20? please elaborate.
They are lifting glass up, and if they put the glass up there right now they have high chance of being broken by glass that is going up.

I've always thought (and still do) that the antenna ring platforms should be glass enclosed observation decks with the glass canted outward at an angle, similar to the CN tower upper deck. There's no way they need all those microwave antennas. Besides, they could still vent the HVAC through the center of the rings. That would make for a much better observation deck and it would be at ~1400 ft as opposed to 1266 ft on floor 102. It would then regain the crown from the Sears tower obs deck (1353 ft). That's the least they can do given how much money they spent on this building compared to other towers of the same size or taller...

I don't think so. Again higher observation decks would exist in NYC. Just not at the World Trade Center.

Do you ever have the tiniest idea what you're talking about?
The holes in the facade on 20 are for lifting podium glass. They have nothing to do with upper floors.

I agree, but it would only work if there's another building taller in NY that can take the broadcasting burdens away from the WTC. Until that happens, the obs deck here will be almost equal to the one located in the ESB right now.

Standing proud: Freedom Tower rises above lower Manhattan's skyline
where once the Twin Towers stood

26th January 2012
Over a decade after the world watched helplessly as two of New York's most iconic landmarks were reduced to rubble, a beacon of hope has rapidly risen from the ashes at Ground Zero.
The One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, has made its mark on lower Manhattan's skyline, standing defiantly over the site of the worst terrorist atrocity to happen on American soil.
As these new pictures show its frame now stands at 90 storeys high, with 20 more yet to be completed, the building already towers above the skyscrapers surrounding the site where almost 3,000 tragically lost their lives.

What an absurd assertion to make. What makes you think they don't? Nobody involved in the rebuilding here can afford to make unnecessary additions, and even if they could, why would they? Do you really think these people are that incompetent? Everything here has a purpose and has been finalized for years.
It blows my mind that people make comments like this.

Just a reminder for those not aware (don't mean you, jd3189): the observation deck at the ESB that is roughly the same height as the one at 1 WTC is the small observation deck that most people never visit.
The overwhelming majority of people only visit the main observation deck at the ESB, which is quite a bit lower (around 1050 ft high).
You can see the difference here:
http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=53535668
Reason I mention this is that for most people, they will in fact be quite a bit higher when visiting the WTC observation deck compared to when they visit the ESB deck.
And for those who DO visit the smaller high deck at the ESB, the experience at the WTC will be a lot better, with its 3 large floors compared to that tiny claustrophobic upper deck at the ESB (yes, I've been there ;) )
But enough about that... I'm just glad to see more steel finally going up!

Even on the diagram you can tell that the highest observation deck on the Empire State Building is still a few feet shorter than the new observation deck at One World Trade Center.
