they started at the base....
from earthcam you can see the base
stuff is half gone......
The east elevators are being converted from hi speed material hoist to personal/material hoist for conde fitout through 2014. the base is being converted into interim loading dock since the roadway to permanent one can not be built till temporary path station entrance is demoed.

it's in the middle of the page. A little confusing if they're just lifting it up the tower or actually installing it. New York 1 had a piece this morning saying it will be raised so we'll just have to wait and see. here's a link for both.

Seeing those nicely painted white cranes next to the exposed spire support structure really brings home how important it was to paint the support structure white. I simply cannot believe that they didn't paint it white now that the support structure is going to be visible without it's covering.

I think the last piece will be hoisted and installed on Monday. That last piece is too big and heavy to just leave dangerously standing on top of the building while waiting to be installed. If the weather cooperates then the last piece will be installed almost immediately is my guess. Will the two cranes a top the building come down soon after they install the final spire piece? Since the radome was supposed to protect the spire, how will they maintain the spire if it gets damaged? The radome was really supposed to be a part of this building and no matter how you slice it, something will still be missing from this building. They need to come up with a alternative/feasable plan to cover the spire.

Absolutely gorgeous!
Worth the long, long wait. I think the disappearance of the radome did us an unintended favor. The net impact of the base rings, guy wires, industrial segmented shaft & gorgeous pinnacle produces an incredibly iconic mast. A fitting way to top off the most significant structure of early 21st century NYC.

I agree, if the favor was to get us to disregard the thing on the top as a design element. I'm sure the rotating beacon and lighting will be nice at night, but the mast in that form is way too long. Not to mention ugly. It looks like somebody stuck a giant fishbone on top.

Construction crews at the 16-acre World Trade Center site will raise the final two sections of a 408-foot spire to the top of One World Trade Center on Monday morning, making the building the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, according to the site's management.
A stainless steel beacon weighing almost six tons will be the final piece put in place to give the building an iconic height of 1,776 feet, according to a news release from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Once the architectural structure is complete, it will be comprised of 18 separate sections of steel and three communication rings.
Port Authority Assistant Director of Media Anthony Hayes said the original design included a radome -- short for radar dome --but that was rejected because of anticipated servicing and maintenance difficulties. The radome would not have impacted the height, but would have provided an additional design element, which ultimately proved impractical, Hayes told CNN.
The spire will serve a television broadcast facility housed in One World Trade Center, the press release said.
He meant, the only design element...

The inside story of boondoggles, self-dealing, common corruption, and why it's all taken so long.
From Part Eight: The Truth About the World Trade Center (http://www.esquire.com/features/world-trade-center-rebuilding-0912)
As the estimate for completing the tower rose past $3 billion, the PA struck a deal in 2010 with a city real estate developer, the Durst Organization, to help finish, manage, and lease the tower: For $100 million, Durst received a 10 percent equity interest in the building, plus a $15 million management contract that gave Durst 75 percent of any monies saved by cutting construction costs up to $12 million, and a mere 50 percent of every penny cut thereafter.
To nobody's surprise and David Childs's despair, Durst found costs to cut, particularly at the top and bottom of the tower. The prismatic glass chosen to wrap the base of the building was replaced with a cheaper version, requiring that the corners of the tower's first two hundred feet be squared off after those corners had already been tapered to meet the thousand-foot isosceles triangles of the curtain wall. Then Durst took its meat-ax to the tower's 408-foot spire: By simply scrapping the radome — a sculpted shell of fiberglass and steel designed to sheathe the antennae and maintenance platforms atop the building — shazam! $20 million saved.
Childs learned from a Durst press report that the radome had been whacked, and issued a statement expressing his disappointment and his hope that SOM and the Port could find an alternate design. Durst claimed its radome decision was strictly about maintenance cost and safety, not money. Patrick Foye, current PA executive director, agreed, adding, "What was designed was impractical, unworkable, and quite frankly dangerous."
Considering that SOM has somehow managed to build and create maintenance plans for skyscrapers in many places for many years; and considering that Douglas Durst himself paid to place full-page ads in New York City newspapers in 2007, urging the new governor, Eliot Spitzer, to murder the tower; and considering that without the radome, what was a spire may be discounted as an antenna mast by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat — the arbiter of building heights — which would mean that the Freedom Tower won't officially stand 1,776 feet tall: Regarding all this, David Childs is mum. Circumspect. Or plain worn-out.
"The simple, pure form — I'm proud of that," he says, and falls silent.

Seriously, I recall driving from Philly to Manhattan during a rain to see sunshine in Manhattan.
You might want to visit the city on Monday to enjoy the topping out ceremony.
My weather widget is showing sunshine with some showers (possibly) for Monday. :D
I wish I could... Sadly (more ways than one), I have to work, which is why I was kinda hoping they would postpone it 'til Tuesday. I'm off then...

Final Section Of 1 WTC Spire Not Being Raised Today
By: NY1 News
One World Trade Center is one step closer to reaching yet another milestone.
The final pieces of the building's spire were expected to be raised later today, but have now been postponed due to the inclement weather.
Once they're installed, the skyscraper will be the tallest structure in the country at 1,776 feet, and the third tallest in the world.
Installation of the spire began in December.
One World Trade is scheduled to open next year.
Meanwhile, sifting for human remains is expected to begin tomorrow morning near the World Trade Center site.
It comes after a part believed to have come from a hijacked plane was found wedged between an apartment building and Park51, an Islamic community center that has been the cause of some major controversy.
The area is being preserved as a crime scene.

I've always thought that, on cloudy days, the steel lining on the facade has a sickly, yellow tint. Is that because they have yet to be cleaned, or is that the final (and rather dismal) coloring?
If the latter is the case, then why didn't they save some money and just use nice, shiny, cheap aluminum?

I did edit the photo which increased the tint slightly (sorry I'm bad at editing! did not know how to remedy), but the increase was only slight--so yes, you are correct in your observation, but the picture does exaggerate it slightly.

For fun, here's a picture I took of 1 WTC from that same location (the courtyard of the WFC) back in September of 2011. It's not the exact spot, but close! It was so little then, and it hit 1000 feet during that visit. :D I'm actually envious of the people who work in 1 WFC (I think?) as well as 7 WTC - they've had the perfect front-seat view of 1 WTC's construction!

I was a little under the weather, but had intended to at least see it from a distance. I get another shot at it. Once the final pieces are in place, the ascension from "ground zero" back to where it was will be complete.
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/one_world_trade_center_soon_western_VgBh4h3chtUAhXmRT8QpBO
Officials had hoped that would happen Monday, but the weather did not cooperate.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the spire pieces plus a steel beacon will instead be lifted at a later date from the rooftop to cap the building at 1,776 feet.
Installation of the 800-ton, 408-foot spire began in December, after 18 pieces were shipped from Canada and New Jersey.
The spire will serve as a world-class broadcast antenna.
http://www.panynj.gov/press-room/press-item.cfm?headLine_id=1779
MEDIA ADVISORY PORT AUTHORITY POSTPONES PLANS TO RAISE FINAL PIECE OF SPIRE FOR ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER DUE TO WIND
Agency will reschedule media photo opportunity as soon as conditions permit
Due to winds, the Port Authority will postpone today’s plans to hoist the final section of spire to the top of One World Trade. We will reschedule the photo opportunity when conditions permit.
http://pix11.com/2013/04/29/world-trade-centers-tallest-milestone-postponed/#axzz2RtGauGJs
World Trade Center’s ‘tallest’ milestone postponed
Some experts argue the tower does not deserve that title, because the antenna is not an integral part of the skyscraper’s structure. The original One World Trade Center also had an antenna, but that building’s height was usually measured by its structural highest point, the roof.
The rebuilt One World Trade Center initially was supposed to have a structural spire element that would have enclosed the antenna, but that design feature was dropped due to cost concerns.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/04/winds_postpone_hoisting_of_fin.html
The spire is both decorative and functional, acting as a fixture for various antennae to be used by tenants of 1 WTC and others, including a state-of-the art broadcast facility planned for the building.
In announcing today's hoisting on Friday, the Port Authority reiterated its assertion that, once completed, 1 WTC will be, "the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere." However, that is a distinction bestowed officially by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an international arbiter of building heights based in Chicago. Chicago is also the home of the hemisphere's current tallest building, the 1,451-foot Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower, as well as its second tallest, the 1,389-foot Trump Tower.
The council ranks building height three ways: "height to architectural top," the category most commonly associated with the crown of "tallest building"; highest occupied floor, and height to tip. Completion of the spire will almost certainly crown 1 WTC as the hemisphere's tallest in the third category — exceeding both the Willis and Trump tower heights even with their antennae included.

My concern is not really what the antenna looks like, it's more of the sheer height of it.
In my opinion, it's just way too tall. To much. To me, it's height looks disproportional with the building.
I think the antenna looks okay. It would have been nice if it could have been covered in a thinner encasing, rather than the fat spire that we were about to get.
