There is no 319... and 317+318 (The beacon) are joined already on the ground.

Thanks!

[QUOTE=jmatero;6089844]315 just went up!

Doesn't seem like they attached it though..

[QUOTE=alan88;6089867]Correct
Thank you

section 316 was picked to the doghouse level today, 315 on the ground may go up on top of spire on Monday if weather cooperates. Section 316 arrived on site today, so all the sections are on site now.

so 315 and 316 are seperate but ready to go??? and 317&318 are already connected at ground level?? so 4 more sections to go well 3 if you count beacon and 317 together. Sound right?

315 and 316 are seperate picks. The crane has to jump up and the 317/318 go in as one pick.

How can the white crane jump up. The lower crane is to short to attach sections to it and these cranes have no frame on them for self jumping.

I saw the drawings last year, but Shapiro I believe is the crane engineer and if memory is correct, they will be using jumping frame and sections from Lomma to get the crane up to 1900 ft.

Forgive my absolute ignorance, but how are they getting the crane that high without decent support? Can the spire hold the anchor?

They might be jumping the crane, but I don't know why they would need to. Despite all the drawings showing the crane lifting the top piece from above, you don't have to do it that way. You only need to hook up above the CG of the last piece.

I still have these moments where I think to myself, "Wow, has this much time passed since 9/11?" - it doesn't feel like it to me, until I start looking at pics of the WTC complex. My very first visit to NYC, only 7 WTC had been built and they were getting it ready for its grand opening (this was in early 2006). It's really surreal to see pics now and see part of the WTC complex back and rebuilt. But it does make me sad at the same time - that we had to start all over again... I'm also thankful for these who were born after that day, they will never remember/know what that day was like. And hopefully they never experience a terrible tragedy like that during their lifetime.

I'm seeing in some of the newest pics - with the newest spire addition - that the cladding is now past the observatory floors and reaching the roof. WOW!! Talk about light at the end of the tunnel!

If you go back and look at post 30928 of the joined section 317/318 that 5 star is wiring up, you will see the lifting lugs at the bottom of section 318.

Apple-calypse now! New York City plays starring role in new Tom Cruise sci-fi epic 'Oblivion'
Though alien invasion leaves Earth in ruins, eagle-eyed moviegoers can spot a fully completed Freedom Tower in the background

By Ethan Sacks
April 13, 2013

Even in 2077, after an alien invasion has left the Earth in ruins, New York City will apparently still be the center of the universe.

The Big Apple gets some major screen time alongside Tom Cruise in the sci-fi epic, “Oblivion,” which opens Friday. A recurring flashback is set atop the Empire State Building — and eagle-eyed movie-goers will spy a fully completed Freedom Tower in the background.

“That was something I was really excited about: New Yorkers are going to get to see the finished Freedom Tower for the first time in this film,” says “Oblivion” writer and director Joseph Kosinski, who moved to the city in the ’90s to attend Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture.

With only one segment remaining, the spire atop 1 World Trade Center is on track for completion this month. The 408-foot-tall finial completes the tower's full height of 1,776 feet, while work continues throughout the 1,368-foot-tall skyscraper. The Port Authority presented the latest updates to Community Board 1 on April 4th, noting that 55 percent of the building is pre-leased, and tenant floors are now being built out.

Construction also continues concurrently in several more areas of the iconic tower, most visibly on floors 90 and 100, where facade installation is substantially complete. Because those floors house mechanical and ventilation systems, the facade takes on a different appearance due to air vents built into the glass panels, which allow air to pass through and cool equipment.

Port Authority Assistant Director of WTC Construction Quentin Brathwaite added that fitout is ramping up at the "One World Observatory" on the 100th, 101st, and 102nd floors. Operator Legends Hospitality, which recently signed a 15-year, $800 million lease with the agency, will continue its interior work both on the upper floors and in the sub-grade public-entrance level. Several details about the observation deck remain under discussion, including the opening date, dining options, and ticket price.

The observatory is expected to open in early 2015, and draw approximately 3.8 million visitors a year.

At the base of 1 WTC, also called the "podium," the special louvered glass panels are complete on the south side of the building, and crews are now beginning installation on both the east and west sides.

No way in hell, they'll have this done this week,,, their gonna milk REALLY milk the Rocket and the piece already attached to it... After seeing how fast the mast was going up from January to the end of February I thought for SURE it would be finished before I went to NYC in mid March.

I completely agree, they're going to milk the Rocket's installation as long as possible. I would guess they will attach that piece after completing a lot more of the communication rings, after finishing the parapet glass, and touching up some of the elevator glass on the west side. They'll want the building to LOOK finished when installing it, just for the reporters cameras at a topping out ceremony.

My guess: the Rocket's installation will be April 27, April 30, or (dear god) July 4th.
April 27th to be a symbolic completion of the tower on the anniversary they started construction in 2006, April 30 being the day it became the tallest structure in New York in 2012, and July 4th being for yada yada yada "Terrorists Hate Our Freedom!"

I would say, topping out ceremony definitely on April 27th or 30th and building completion date of July 4th. My final answer. lol

@ people of this forum:

There are several times in the movie where we can see the New WTC (1WTC, 2WTC, etc). Of course it's 3D-modelized, but, anyway, the render is very good, according to me.

The movie occurs in a post-apocalyptic future, but some scenes are flashbacks from Tom Cruise, at the top of Empire State Building, admiring the city.

Assuming the crane will require 1 more jump before installing the final piece of the spire (317+318), does anyone know what the height of the tip of the jib will be at that point? It'll obviously have to be taller than the spire, I'm just wondering how high will it actually reach? (It'll be the tallest structure in NYC ever (and likely for a very very long time).

They'll want the guys up before hurricane season starts. They might have been able to do without them, but it would have required a different roof structure. And everything in this building is about twice as strong as it has to be.

Yes they did. Probably the scenes were made before the decision of redesign, haha

That's good news - I'm hoping that the radome is engrained into popular culture enough that, when the big day comes and the tower is revealed as "finished", everyone will collectively go "That's It??"

Out-of-towners, who've been sold on the idea that the tower is actually on par with a national monument, will take notice and HOPEFULLY stir up enough of a fuss that the media will shame Durst into doing the right thing.

This scenario is the only reason why I hope tourists still refer to 1WTC as the 'Freedom Tower' - they're expecting a full-fledged sculpture of a building and will balk at the idea that their 'Freedom' is represented by some stripped-down mast.

Well the tower and site IS a landmark and I doubt they would really care. The only ones that do/would care about the spire are us forumers and skyscraper enthusiast that actually follow the construction. Other wise I can almost guarantee you nobody else will really pay attention unless its rules as an antenna and the height is reduced(which is likely not to happen)

Montroy Andersen DeMarco Selected to Design Landmark Observation Deck at the World Trade Center
New York-based architects partner with Legends and The Hettema Group for One World Observatory

April 16, 2013

Montroy Andersen DeMarco (MADGI) is pleased to announce that it has been selected to help design the observation deck at the World Trade Center in New York City, the One World Observatory.

Along with partners, Legends and California-based experience designers The Hettema Group, MADGI has been tasked with working to bring an interactive design for the space to life. The Hettema Group will design the interactive visitor experience and MADGI will execute on that design.

Nationally renowned Legends will develop and operate the observation deck atop what will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere when it reaches its final height of 1776 feet. Construction on the facility will begin in early 2014, and when open in 2015, One World Observatory will provide millions of visitors with the ultimate observatory deck experience on floors 100-102. Once completed, One World Observatory will include a dynamic welcome center, interactive viewing stations, immersive multi-media presentations, guest interpreters, as well as dining, retail and special event spaces.

"To be selected as the architect for such a key piece of this monument, which means so much not just to New Yorkers, but to millions of Americans and citizens of the world, is an honor beyond measure," said Dan Montroy, AIA, and Principal at MADGI. "We look forward to working with our partners on this project in making this a must-visit and meaningful destination, as well as a showcase for a panoramic and dynamic view of New York that has been missed by many."

How high is the mast right now? It would be nice to have a running height count until the pinnacle is installed and to know the exact day that the mast exceeds the height of the highest mast on the Sears/Willis Tower in Chicago, even if the 1,776 feet doesn't count as part of the official structural height (and given what I have read I don't think it should) it will have the highest pinnacle height of any building in the United States.

I personally think the building is ugly and unbecoming of ''America's Enduring Spirit". Grant it, yes, it's an office building. Nothing more. It's not part of the official memorial but still, I think something far greater could have come of this area. Just my opinion.

Take the drive and grovel in its presence. When the tower base was just poking out of the ground I took a drive in the winter from Michigan to NY and back in a total of 72 hours just to see it. This tower is the center of the USA skyscraper scene.

I don't know how many of you are lucky enough to reside in NYC, but I've had a front row seat to this towers construction since it pierced the downtown skyline last year. During the early days, I had a strong dislike for the radome, as it appeared cumbersome and obtrusive in all the renders being released - I wished that they'd scrap it.

Then, when they did scrap it, I had a change of heart. The new mast renderings, with their rust coloring and spindly stature, made me wish for the days when something a bit more, well, cumbersome, would mark the top of this tower. I nursed a deep resentment for Durst and his pocketbook, going so far as to pen an essay on the death of civic-minded architecture. It wasn't a good time.

Now the mast is nearly complete. I've been watching it climb skywards from my 6th floor studio in the EV and from the roof of my Brooklyn apartment. In both cases, the mast looks healthy, not too wide and not too thin, a slender and stately mass of steel that, when paired with the rings and the guy wires, rings in harmony with the rest of the tower. Even the matte steel, while not ideal, looks nearly white in the daylight and will likely glow in the sun when completed.

The other day I went for a walk along the Brooklyn Bridge Park riverfront, south of the bridge. The slim new segments had just been erected and the true magnitude of the tower was beginning to be revealed. For the first time, gleaming in the sunlight, the tower looked cohesive, the massive blue trunk and the delicate lattice contrasting beautifully. Standing on the promenade, I made peace with the tower, and for the first time in over a year was giddy with excitement over its completion.

Oh what a time to be 20 and in NYC! :haha:

I see the tower at least a dozen times or more a day, but from the north side where the sun don't shine. It looks black and it does NOT look good at all. If they had just painted the freaking thing white or silver it would've been OK, but the battleship gray just doesn't cut it.

It's such an odd thing, a structural support never meant to be seen. Perhaps they'll affix the bathroom plumbing to the exterior facade if it saves them some money. ;)

Finally, seeing it in person, and realizing how easy it is to climb up inside of it with the platforms and all, I really can't see how replacing small radome panels was "too dangerous" for workers. Personally I think it'll be more dangerous climbing up their without the covering because of winds.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do live in New York. I live in Staten Island and I can't see the spire near my job or where I live. My job is like 7 to 8 miles in a straight line away from the WTC. My house is about 10 to 12 miles in a straight line. I use to see the Twin Towers perfectly along with the antenna atop the North Tower. I can see One WTC from my house and my job but not the spire. Heck I can't even see the cranes sometimes and I have 20/20 vision. I don't know what else to tell you. Are you sure you aren't talking about the cranes because they even block the view of the spire right now. I guess we won't know what real impact it will make until the cranes come down. Well yeah there is nothing you and me can do about it to change the decision Durst made but there is nothing wrong with expressing an opinion on it. Trust me you'll be hearing negative views for a very long time so you best better get used to that. We live in a very opinionated world so people are always going to have to something to say. The spire is ok without the radome enclosure but it was a stupid move by Durst. If you want to like the spire be my guest that's your right. I'm just glad something is being built there at all you know.

Bullshit. I live in Brooklyn Heights, three blocks from the promenade, and you cannot see the mast when it's raining (let alone sleeting or snow).

In fairness you also can't see the top 10 floors when there's heavy cloud cover so its not like the radome would've help.

The mast is more disable than I thought it would be but there's no need to exaggerate.

I am not liking the horizontal striping hiding behind the fins of the base cladding. I am afraid they will really clash with the verticality of the tower when the fins are finally popped out.

Furthermore the horizontal striping would detract from the wishful-imagining of any similarity to the Twins' base.

It's such an odd thing, a structural support never meant to be seen.

That's one thing that really bothers me the most about it. We're not seeing the tower at it's best. Sure, most people are glad to have a peak restored to the lower Manhattan skyline,
and they figured no one would care. But it's what everyone feared would happen once the "greedy developers" were in charge of the rebuilding.

Finally, seeing it in person, and realizing how easy it is to climb up inside of it with the platforms and all, I really can't see how replacing small radome panels was "too dangerous"
for workers. Personally I think it'll be more dangerous climbing up their without the covering because of winds.

That was all just BS. Especially considering the spire was to be designed as an open air structure around the antenna originally. They could have fallen back to that plan if the radome
was seriously a problem.

That base cladding is a great disappointment. I thought it would be more vertical like the Twin Towers. Instead it turns out to be horizontal. Not just that, but the jade green base glass collides with the glass on the tower which is more bluish. It isn't attractive in any way. They couldn't have found glass for the base that matched the rest of the tower?

i thought they already said they couldnt use the open air structure because of something about the radio waves wouldn't be able to get out or something like that..whether you believe it or not :D

and yea not liking the base cladding..im sure it will look good at night when its lit up with the same colors as the mast
