hypothetical question; will the continuous development in downtown, one world trade center and the rest, lead to more development in brooklyn and jersey, if it does this development will reshape the harbor, as it already had?

Jersey City is a suburb of NYC.
How many suburbs have skyscrapers, you may ask?
Jersey City is also closer to Manhattan than Staten Island.
It makes sense to see development across the river.
As for Brooklyn (and let's not forget Queens either), further development would be so awesome.
Imagine having skyscrapers on both sides of the East River stretching for miles.
We won't have the density of Manhattan, but just a few scattered towers is all we need, then we will have a canyon on the river. ;)
Getting back on topic though, One WTC is (honestly) best viewed from either river and Jersey City has the best view, hands down! :)

I was wondering something:
afterall, does the platform-ring has only one purpose ? (that is: to support the dishes)
Or does it have another funtion?
Anyway, I'm happy that this ring is there. It gives a beautiful aspect. And brings the total roof height to 425 meters, even if it's not officially recognized.
I'm happy too that the ring doesn't look like this horrible redesign, with a "skeleton-ring".
1WTC is definitely Lord of the Rings !

I would obviously prefer the radone cover, but it is what it is and it doesn't look bad. It looks like most other spires/masts/whateverthehecks in the city, so it fits in.
If by something tall on top of a building, yeah it fits in. When the final crown is placed on top, people will be asking this question for years -
why couldn't the rest of the structure look like the top? Why didn't they finish it?
The top ring, meanwhile, is over 1,400 ft.

Welcome back Dominator, (wondering where you been,) now to clear up the observation deck question? There will be 2 decks? one that is 2 floors high, the one's just above the maintainance grooves and 1 perhaps 10 floors higher? That's what I'm getting out of the responses... And for photo 30887 NYC4life's photo, is that the last ring that's partial, or is there another 1 going on top of that one??, I thought that was the 3rd and last, but his render says 2nd of 3 rings,,?? Just wondering if thats the top ring or not?
Three decks. Floors 100, 101, and 102. 102 is the highest one.

The communication rings will serve three purposes. One is obviously to support the communication dishes and antennas. The lower ring will also contain the tracks for the window washing units. And I do believe the cable stays for the spire will attach to this ring also.

Yep. The guys will attach to the base of the ring. The ring will distribute the cable load without need special sub roof structure just for the guys.

Are they going to remove the gratings currently on the ring ???
Hell, then that's really too bad.

Removing all that grating on the rings would be a waste. Those look like they are custom fitted. Where will the workers stand when working on the different pieces of equipment going up on the ring?

Road cruiser, do you know if that is the final ring,, on those last renders or will there be another,, because the way I'm seeing it that's #3, the 1 that's very partially completed like 1/16 of the circle.. Simple ? is that the 2nd or (top) last ring??? Photo30887 to be exact; and NYGuys, 1 of his pics just before,so 30886, he's got a shot of the rings and it's apparent there's 3 there? but I'm confused because that photo says second of 3 rings????, these photos are on previous page.

There are 3 ring sections total. Ring 1 is done. Rings 2 and 3 are only partially built and are most visible on the south side of the building. That is the final ring.

The grating is permanent. I think he is referring to the temporary construction platform.

Love the glass on the base, it's a nice contrast to the glass above. The installed base glass has such a lightweight, shimmery, fragile appearance which masks and belies the massively fortified blast walls just behind that thin veil.

I hate to say it, but the industrial look of the rings and mast are really starting to grow on me. I think our judgment should be reserved until we see its final form. The base is meh, I'd like to see the so called fins. I do think as we near completion that the tower is taking on a new presence as the mast and base are coming to fruition at the same time , and it is hard to honestly bear judgment until this tower is complete. Its presence seems to change rapidly as these elements are completed.
That picture of that guy standing on the mast with his arms up, could become historic much like the one from the original WTC with the guy "mooning" the camera from somewhere close to the top during construction. Anyone have that pic?

The ring itself was always meant to be a somewhat "prominent" feature of the tower, or the crown so-to-speak. I really feel it could be considered
an architectural feature of the building. The antenna mast, on the other hand, is something completely different. When all is said and done,
it comes into question - if I place a bike on top of a house, does the entire thing become a bike? As nice as the top of the antenna is,
does it save the rest of the structure? Those questions will be answered.

NYguy I have questions for you.
Is this mast and ring just mounted to the roof like others we see on buildings. The ring is 140' or 150' in diameter. Is that the prominent factor on counting it into height. Not how it is mounted into the building.

The cladding of the vertical gap on the west side is looking great! At this rate, the gap should be completely gone by the time I visit in four weeks, and then the only gap left will be where the east side elevator currently is. look at the gap between that first "crown" piece (5th piece up) to the next, I guess the scaling is a little bit off but just a little thing I noticed.

Trying to get an idea of what this will look like once the temporary platforms running up the mast are gone and more of the rings are in. Take off the orange safety railings and they will look kind of thin. Needs microwave dishes to finish the look.
You would think they could mock up some fiberglass ones as place-fillers until they sell the transmission rights to people. Unfortunately they will look fairly sparse until then. And as for the bare mast...

That's all that's left? 4 pieces.. Does anybody know the page where, the one forumer (several pgs back, I can't find it, but it was damn good),, had it broke down spire piece, and the tonnage of each"? Gonna be sorta sad, we had to wait months, then bang, bang, bang,, there 3 pieces are DONE in 1 day.. With very little break for the final 1/3, of the spire,,so next piece takes us to 1606" #14 will the next piece be 14 or 15? (someone said there is no 17?)?? unless they count that as the long beam that supports the beacon? quite impressive,, so maybe a few more nice days and they can go to the rocket.. I have a feeling they'll wait on those last 2 just for press coverage,, because those last 2 represent, what? a 1/4 of the mast, antennae or spire... I just think they'll hold off till they get more publicity.. Anybody else think they may try to get a new "topping out" ceremony when the last and coolest piece is erected.. Can't remember the forumer who had that diagram but it was perfect,, For some reason ChiBears or Kanto come to mind.. Kanto could you diagram it is NOW at spire piece 14 or 13 whichever, last piece erected,,.. Whatever it is, it's exciting.. I'm loving it and I'm sure everybody else is who has been following this baby for a long time... Does anybody believe they'll have a topping out ceremony with the Beacon since there really never was 1 like they did with 4wtc? Somebody just informed me the spire diagram,, which is amazing was made by PMad, or OTIE,, although I coukld have swore it was someone else,,, On a different note I remember following this tower, roughly 2-3 yrs ago, and it looked like 8 Spruce street was the tallest Downtown,, now it looks like just an average downtown scraper,, with 1 and 4 WTC,, although it's a good 100ft taller(8 spruce) than any bldg in my closest major city...

Perhaps you know RCruiser what are the "big, what looks like Garage doors" in the middle of the base cladding,, Seems way too big for Entrances, and will they be cladded differently,, different glass, or are they not entrances at all? Or if they are entrances, is a different material going to be used to bring them down to normal sized entrances, perhaps clear windows,, looking for your expertise on this 1.

It looks like they've already assembled 317 and 318. That will let them raise the final piece with a shorter crane since the CG will be lower for the combo than for the top piece.

Everyone needs to quit bitching about the base cladding. It will look a lot different after they pop out the fins. It will give it a more dynamic, aesthetically pleasing look. Everyone should reserve their final judgement until after it is finished. The same goes for the mast.

I say everyone stop bitchin about what everyone is bitchin about. If people don't like what they see so far, they have a right to say it. And frankly its not looking good for the base. As far as the mast goes, I don't know how much more you want to see, but its nearly topping out. I think we have an idea of what it looks like. Don't expect a dramatic change. You either like it or you don't at this point. And like everything else on the building, its open for discussion.

I'll wait until I see it before I judge it, even then no one probably wants to read me bitch. So since I won't bitch later and I have the right to bitch, I think I'll bitch about NYguy's bitching that people should stop bitching about other people bitching.
If the first person is free to bitch, then the second person is free to bitch about the first person, and so on. This is after all the Freedom Tower, not the Censorship Tower. Please feel free to bitch about this.

My understanding is that the platforms are not being removed. The platforms are there to support the structure of the radome, which was removed; but because it was simply deleted and not redesigned, the platforms remain. But I am interested to hear from someone with more knowledge than me.

The base looks ok. I do not believe it looks as good as it would have with the original design, but it is what it is. Not horrible, not great. Average for a supertall base. The spire was cost engineered. Simple as that. We have the skeleton of what was supposed to be.
