^^^ For added security to possible truck bombings.

On the observation deck? I doubt it.

However, given how many stupid decisions there have been on this site I guess would not be surprised if they covered up a 2-3 story glass wall 1000 feet in the air with sheetrock because "carbombs."

Base lighting being tested again.

I was down by the WTC last night. The lights your seeing at the base are construction flood lights not the lighting of the base cladding. It was most obvious from the openings where the external hoist is. From what I can tell, they removed some temporary form work/scaffolding and what we are now seeing is the openings (slits)in the base cladding which is allowing the light to shine through.

EDIT:

As seen in the photo below, all of the scaffolding and forms (behind the steel super structure) have now been removed.

Yes it would be nice if the observation would be located up here, by the way in the indoor observation deck the the highest at the 102nd floor how high is it is it 1,270 or less or more?

I thought the same thing... That ring would be a perfect outside observation deck! Do you think it could be possible? They probably debated it and decided against it... I wonder why.

Seems like the main color used in 1WTC's interior design in white color.

White is sober, but it is a timeless color for an interior design so hopefully in 100 years 1WTC's inside will still look nice !

They never debated the idea of a outdoor deck because even if they didn't put the Communication Rings, there's still the mast which could harm you if exposed for too long.

It terms of radiation, as long as it's a one time visit and you aren't working up top every day you'd be fine.

Hopefully in the future that will change. This is too much of a good view to waste. From there, you are essentially looking from the heart of the New York metro area. Midtown is the heart of Manhattan, but Lower Manhattan is the heart of New York City and the region as a whole.

In terms of basics, an outdoor deck would require a new elevator and all the fun structural work that would go along with putting that in from the indoor deck. A pretty expensive retrofit considering all the electrical equipment above.

NYGuy, You said that 111w would "supposedly" rise. Is there some doubt as to whether it will or not?

No, but that haven't stated whether they would begin with or without financing, or if financing was even an issue.

When is this one expected to be occupied? The PATH trains are at capacity during rush hour, so it will be interesting to see how they cope
with another 20,000 new workers in lower Manhattan. Previously, 26% of the workers in the old World Trade Center commuted from New Jersey by PATH.

At capacity can mean different things. The Port Authority handles service and frequency on the PATH rails, so I'm sure everything is taken into account.
Obviously everyone coming in on PATH will be coming from or through Jersey. Even so, it's a different WTC.

Willis Tower has adjustments to make

January 11, 2014
By Michelle Manchir

Chicago's skyline showpiece, Willis Tower, will lose its nickname this year as the nation's tallest building, but you wouldn't know it by visiting its Skydeck observatory and two well-stocked gift shops. Key chains, mugs, picture frames, T-shirts, postcards, shirt pins, water bottles and even 3D puzzles that call the building the tallest in the country fill shelves in the store of the 110-story tower.

....once the tower's 1.6 million annual visitors pay admission to its Skydeck Chicago observatory, they're escorted through a hallway that boasts facts and figures about Chicago icons. One of the last vignettes they read says they're standing inside "the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere."

On the 60-second ride up the elevator to the observatory, a video repeats the fact. At the end of the tour, visitors find a machine that smashes pennies into an engraved copper souvenir that also says "the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere."

"We have plenty of time to make adjustments," said Randy Stancik, a spokesman for Willis Tower, in an email response to questions about how long the items will remain on sale.

Officials likely have at least a few months to do so. For the title to officially apply to 1 World Trade Center, that building must be structurally and architecturally complete, fully clad and open at least partially for business, said Daniel Safarik, a spokesman for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, via email.

Construction of the New York building is expected to be complete early this year, with its first tenants moving in by early 2015, said Anthony Hayes, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. He also couldn't say exactly when the title would stick.

NOVA examines One World Trade Center on "Ground Zero Supertower"

By Rena Garrett
January 22, 2014

Return to Ground Zero to witness the final chapter in an epic story of engineering, innovation and the perseverance of the human spirit: the completion of One World Trade Center. "Ground Zero Supertower" examines the new skyscraper rising up 104 stories and 1,776 feet from the site where the Twin Towers once stood. In this update of NOVA’s Emmy-nominated special "Engineering Ground Zero," NOVA goes inside the construction of the tower’s final floors and the installation of its soaring, 800-ton spire and beacon.

"Ground Zero Supertower" on NOVA airs on Wednesday, February 26th at 8:00 p.m.

^^ It's considered the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere if you count the spire height, which is the official height. If you count the highest occupied floor, Willis Tower is taller.

It's a mast, technically. It's a spire that will have broadcasting equipment eventually. They considered it a spire because it's part of the architectural design.

I'm more inclined to cut a building some slack when it's trying to do something bold or give new expression to the ways that we live in the city. But a 1,500 foot monument to compromise (http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/skyline/2011/09/12/110912crsk_skyline_goldberger), corruption (http://www.esquire.com/the-rebuilding/world-trade-center-rebuilding-0912), fear (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/04/weekinreview/04ouroussoff.html?_r=2&hp&oref=slogin&), and our lack of self-confidence as a society? I too think the base turned out well. Its design over the original fits more in line with the clean look of the tower above it. Save for that spire at the top. It still looks very much under-construction which is what I don't like about it. The hollow radome base below it doesn't help either; something about the top of the tower just feels incomplete.
Nonetheless, at its core, 1WTC is a timeless design.

It deserves disdain (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/28/banksy-one-world-trade-center_n_4169568.html).

thats weird because i thought it is the most expensive building with a beautiful design yet an ugly spire and its 1776ft according to the cbtuh so before you lash out at this building remember without it downtown would look like a plateau so....

Just walked by tonight and the full spire is lit. Not the rings (if by rings you meant the circular floors at roof level). Looks pretty awesome in bright green...will try to get a photo tomorrow.

No, the communication rings will not be lit. The mechanical floors will, however. That will make the top of the building look much better at night along with the spire.

At least the mechanical floors will be lit. Cause this building needs that to look really good at night. Plus it looks really good with the green light!

The beacon or light is very noticeable at night on I-78 leaving Newark. Did it recently get brighter or is it just me? The power of the beacon might be the strongest one in the whole city. Its like a ball of light exploding every couple of seconds.

NOVA examines One World Trade Center on "Ground Zero Supertower"

By Rena Garrett
January 22, 2014

I mentioned that One57 will be feature in episode 4, but it starts off (next week) right here...

http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/stories/10-tv-shows-that-have-us-excited-for-february

PBS takes an inside look at the world’s tallest buildings in the four-part series “Super Skyscrapers,” beginning February 5
with “One World Trade Center,” the 1776-foot tower located at the former Ground Zero site in Manhattan.

Subsequent episodes cover London’s Leadenhall building, known locally as “The Cheese Grater,” China’s Shanghai Tower,
and One 57, a 75-story luxury residential tower in Manhattan.

It will be a good month for skyscraper watching.

Seeing the Super Bowl city from the One World Trade Center building

Broncos and Seahawks colors are bathing the top of the tallest building in the western hemisphere. Starting Wednesday, the orange lights for Denver and green lights for Seattle began to alternate on the spire of One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower.

Once a winner is crowned Sunday, that team's colors will be locked in and displayed for the world to see.
Looking out from the windows that surround the 102nd floor, where construction work is still being done, a visitor could see for approximately 50 miles in the right conditions.

When completed in late spring of 2015, the 102nd floor will be the top of a three-story observation deck attraction called the One World Observatory. It is being developed by Legends Attractions, under contract with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and The Durst Organization.

"It is the most stunning view in the city and maybe, in all the world," said John Urban, vice president and general manager of the One World Observatory.

Urban accompanied 7NEWS anchor Anne Trujillo on a tour of the 102nd floor Wednesday. To enter the active construction site, Trujillo and Urban were required to put on hard hats and reflective vests. An escort from the Port Authority was also mandatory.

Inside the building, rough walls were exposed everywhere and many bore messages scribbled by the people who helped to build it. Some were prayers or messages to the past, while others were signatures of the workers proud to have rebuilt a strong structure on that particular site.

The Port Authority escort confided that at least one future tenant has considered encasing some of the signed structural supports in glass, rather than hiding it behind walls.

"Everyone will bring their own meaning to this building," Urban said, acknowledging that some will see a trip to the top as a kind of American pilgrimage.

After riding to the top in an elevator that can climb as fast as 2,000 feet per minute, the first view visitors will get through the windows of the 102nd floor will be toward the north, along the island of Manhattan. It is a breathtaking view, as Urban showed Trujillo on Wednesday.

During the course of the tour and interview, the sun set and cast shadows from the lower buildings below. Pink and orange hues lit the construction materials that filled all but narrow paths around the floor. By the time the tour was done, the lights had come on to illuminate the other buildings in the city.

"At any time of day, the space evolves," Urban said.

The building gets its power from the ground below. Subterranean power source. Thats why when hurricane Sandy occurred, it was the only building in Lower Manhattan that had lights. Also, it has backup generators as well.

I'm pretty sure that most of BPC had lights during the storm because their grid is separate from the rest of downtown.

Didn't notice it till tonight. Was watching CNN, they were interviewing Guiliani with a live view of lower Manhattan in the background and I was like, The beacon is on. Sorta like a pulsar. I must say, I really love the spire/antenna. At first I didn't like it, but the more I'm able to see the building from my building, it just fits in with our industrial architecture. Last night I went downtown and the spire looks great lit. I think that the rings need to be as well though.

Can they not redesign something around the antenna that is decorative and easier to maintain? latticing or something? maybe in the future someone will step in and say "this is not right"

Why does the spire lighting on the bottom look different than the rest of it?

The mechanical floors are still not enlightened during the night...
That's unfortunate, because, on the renderings it looks really amazing when the upper portion of the tower is enlightened.

When will they turn on the lights?

The building is still under construction.

PBS launches 'Super Skyscrapers' series with 'One World Trade' episode

DOCUMENTARY "Super Skyscrapers"

WHEN|WHERE Four-week series launches with "One World Trade Center" Wednesday night at 10 on WNET/13

WHAT IT'S ABOUT Afraid of heights? Maybe you'd better DVR this hour for fast-forwarding purposes. The view can be vertigo-inducing from as close to 1,776 feet high as you're likely to get
near the tip of the tallest structure in lower Manhattan. Or, for that matter, America

Super Skyscrapers" starts with what the PBS audience is most interested in: this physical retort to terror rising on the main site attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, when both towers of the '70s-era
World Trade Center came crumbling down. Succeeding episodes will go inside London's new "cheese grater" (Leadenhall Building), China's Shanghai Tower and Manhattan's One57 "billionaire building."
But none touches the hearts of viewers like tonight's project, into which 26,000 local workers have also poured their expertise and sweat along with 150,000 yards of concrete pumped
a quarter-mile into the sky.

"It will be built to survive anything," we're told, as One World Trade has already been assaulted during construction by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake and superstorm Sandy's 125-million-gallon
water dump.

MY SAY Tonight's hour delivers its own assault of numbers -- 14,000 panels of blast-proof glass, 16,000-psi-tested concrete, 408-foot spire, 2,000-feet-per-minute elevators --
backed by building footage, with explanatory graphics and computer animation. "One World Trade Center" seems itself determined to survive as the ultimate documentation
of the seven-year construction project's final exterior phases.

BOTTOM LINE Go inside the design. The details. The drama. And the dream: Building it back is the best revenge.

So is the spire lit every night now?

^^^ I'm starting to think so. It's been lit every night since the 29th of January.
