It's amazing how well the WTC complex complements each other and its surroundings, while still each building having its unique features.Like for example,I'm sure many people will love 2WTC while others may think 4WTC isn't as great and vise versa for someone else, but I'm sure 1WTC will be loved by everyone.

When the complex is all done... Oh man, imagine the gorgeous view you'll get when riding the Staten Island ferry. :slob:

Q&A: One World Trade Prepares for the Spire.

http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/OB-SP833_wtc04_DV_20120417132015.jpg

April 17, 2012
By Eliot Brown

In a word, the redevelopment of the World Trade Center is complicated. There’s a tangled web of owners and different towers rising at the same time, all on a compact site. One of the best vantage points for this complexity belongs to Tishman Construction, the New York-based builder that has overseen construction at many of New York’s largest towers, including Goldman Sachs Group’s new building and the Bank of America tower in Midtown. Owned by AECOM, Tishman is the construction manager for One World Trade Center (owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Durst Organization); it’s co-construction manager on the Santiago Calatrava-designed $3.4 billion transportation hub (owned by the Port Authority); and it’s building 3 and 4 World Trade Center (owned by Silverstein Properties). Mike Manella oversees all these projects for Tishman, and took time last week to chat about building One World Trade — slated to be the country’s tallest building — and the other projects.

WSJ: How long have you been involved in this?

Mr. Manella: I’ve been involved in the site since literally the day after 9/11. … Back in 2001, Tishman had a previous relationship with Larry Silverstein.

WSJ: On Tower One, how high up are you right now?

Mr. Manella: One hundred stories, passing the height of the Empire State Building on a structural basis in the next week or so, and on the way to 105. We’ll top out at 105 in the very near future, and we’ll go to the antenna above that.

WSJ: Is it a challenge to add on the spire – how do you get it up there?

Mr. Manella: It’s all been pre-planned from Day One. The cranes that were on the site were picked to raise that tower in pieces, at their maximum constructed weight. … Each segment of the tower will max out at 52 tons.

WSJ: Besides the antenna, what are some challenges with building up so high? I know you’ve had some wind delays.

Mr. Manella: The cranes shut down in excess of 30 miles per hour, and we’ve lost several weeks during the winter — not because of snow, not because of anything except wind. … The job did slow down — it looks lovely, the sun’s out, but the wind up there is pretty rough, so it’s been interesting.

WSJ: What about the construction makes (One World Trade) so expensive?

Mr. Manella: The building has enhancements that are very special because of the nature of the building: The height, the security of the building, the location, the amount of concrete sitting on top of the train—the PATH train, the track that runs to New Jersey runs right through the core of that building at the bottom of that building

WSJ: Of the three projects, the Silverstein towers, the transportation hub and One World Trade, which is the most complex to build?

Mr. Manella: It’s no question — Tower One is a challenge, but the transportation hub — the Calatrava type of project — is challenging. … The detailing of the steel, the nature of the structure is very, very architectural — it’s actually artistic, so it has very unique installation difficulties. The equipment is difficult… the heaviest pieces of steel have been in the hub.

WSJ: How big?

Mr. Manella: 100 ton-plus.

WSJ: Do you get put in a funny position when the Silverstein folks and the Port Authority folks fight at various times of the project?

Mr. Manella: We’ve had Tishman people on both sides of the table during the arbitration and we managed to keep everyone not mad at me. … I have often sat at the end of the table — in the middle—with the Port Authority on one side and Silverstein on the other, and tried to moderate and mediate. … We continue to get assignments because we have, I think, approached it so rationally or fairly.

hi everyone, i have not followed the construction of freedom tower since at least one month :) so can you please remind me the current situation ? i.e:

current height ?
current top-floor ?

thanks ;) ! actually it seems that the tower is now around 380 meters-tall, no ?

PZelda
Apr 19, 2012, 12:31 PM
We are for sure at the 100th floor now. I believe the current height is 1240', which comes to 378m so your estimate is correct on that one. (please correct me if I'm wrong on current height!) The next jump should have 1 WTC passing ESB as the tallest building in NYC. :)

Via the WTC Progress webcam, they've started cladding the south side of 1 WTC (see here: http://oxblue.com/open/panynj/wtc). That is awesome, because the last 3 days had them cladding the north side -- the side that is visible in the shots that Carlos takes. :) They've been fast, too - I checked the cam an hour ago and they hadn't started yet! They already have 1/2 of that side cladded now.

Does anyone else think this shot sort of looks like instead of the current design, they chose to sort of rebuild the twins, just a lot more separated from each other. 1WTC looks very boxy in this because you can't see the details and you can't see the setback on 4wtc so it looks like a twin just going up slower.

Floor 100 is 1,240' 2'' + the column splices bring it to 1,244' above the lobby just 6' lower then the point where the ESBs broadcast tower mounts above the 102nd floor at 1,250'

I actually change my mind, i thin 4wtc gonna finish before 1. I thought it had more to go, but it looks likes it closing in on t/o and it looks like its moving faster than 1wtc too

It will. One World Trade Center has 4 floors, but these floors are different compared to the regular office floor and take on average of 2 to 3 weeks per floor.

Four World trade Center Only has 5 floors left, i think all of them are office floors. So it should be one floor a week.

One World Probably will top out in June
4 wtc most likely will top out by the middle to end of next month.

Freedom Tower About to Top Empire State Building as NYC's Tallest

by Mark Berman Opposing Views
Apr 19, 2012

As construction continues, the rebuilt One World Trade Center is about to reclaim its position as the tallest building in New York City. The Freedom Tower will soon be taller than the Empire State Building, and it'll go even higher. The Associated Press has more:

Schumer presses for signature on GSA lease at One World Trade Center

2012-04-19
By: Mark Rockwell

As the scandal at the General Services Administration over lavish spending by its managers grows, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) pressed the agency not to forget its commitment to occupy space in the offices rising at the World Trade Center site. Schumer called Acting GSA Administrator, Daniel Tangherlini on April 18 to urge him to finalize the agency’s lease agreement for federal office space at One World Trade Center, which is slated to open in 2013. He said GSA had signed a preliminary “term sheet” more than seven months ago and that the agency’s concrete commitment would not only make it clear the building -- built on the site of the World Trade Center office complex that was destroyed in 2011 -- was open for business, but would bring the occupancy rate past a vital 50 percent threshold.

The GSA is embroiled in a scandal over excessive spending at a Las Vegas convention by some of its western regional leadership. Congress has convened multiple hearings on the issue during the weeks following the exposure of the expenses.

The current “GSA mess” shouldn’t derail the timeline for the lease, said Schumer. The agency signed a term sheet for 300,000 square feet of office space in the 1 World Trade Center last August, but the final lease, now under GSA review, hasn’t been signed. Schumer said he hopes to focus attention on the unsigned lease as the leadership at GSA changes in the wake of the controversy.

Yeah, but there's a difference between a want and a need, and it's heartbreaking to see that New York still needs to prove something to the world when we're the ones who set the standards.

In regards to the video, I'm one New Yorker who loves taller and this seemed to be proven with the new structures that are currently rising or in the near future. I'm not so focused about the size of buildings as much as before, but I love taller. I'm absolutely glad that we are reclaiming our skyline. 1wtc is already and will be a georgous building.

The Empire State Building should be surpassed sometime in the next week or so. The Tower will likely top out in June because we're still only at 100 and the next columns will be for 101 and 102.

The tower won't top out in June, in May it will. New steel probably next week, and then most likely a memorial day/ fleet week top out! The PA even stated it in a conference saying it will top out sometime in May for proof.

Nah,the PA also said it was topping out in April and it took them weeks for them to figure is wasn't ,all while Otie and others were predicting a much later date and as it seems Otie was right.Trust me,it will be after May.

No. The building is 4 floors from toping out it would not take 3 more months to top off. It will most likely be end of may or early june. I say may cause they can raise four floors in a lift if they want, but the next four are mechanical still so it will take a bit longer into may.

It will top out in late May or early June. Not July 4.

The base was supposed to begin cladding at the end of March, but they are adding the mounts that support the base work so i'll assume it will occur when the tower is done.

I thought that sometimes steel erection covers like 3 floors in 1 jump, so wouldn't it be like 1 or 2 more jumps until topping off?

Looking back at Otie's diagrams, it's more than likely going to be three. It's conceivable that they could put some huge 53' columns in that will take us up to 103 in one jump, but that's unlikely. More than likely the next jump will go up to 102 (since 101 is partially a mezzanine), then the next one to 103. 104 and 105 will probably be covered by one jump which will include four corner nodes where the angled sides come together.

Then there will probably be one more to the parapet, after which they'll install the roof slab and all the junk they need to have up there before beginning the communications ring and ultimately the spire.

The PA doesn't even know when it will top out, they only have an estimate just like we do. They have already given us false top out dates in the past because of the delays. They still have over 100' more to build and May is almost here so it will top out in June not that it really matters because it's already come this far.

nice work Carlos... but it's still a bit off ? steel is up to the bottom of floor 100, which is the first of the observation floors. thus the top of the steel in your pic should more or less align with the top row of vents in the curtain wall.

That's more like it. This building is going to tower over Lower Manhattan on a wide margin. And it seems that my prediction was true. June or July(just to be safe) will be the topping off time. I've been too familiar with the 2-3 weeks of preparing the mechanical and large observational floors to think that the PA actually knows when 1 WTC will reach roof height. But hopefully, it will still be in the spring time.

Looking at all the diagrams and pics, it looks like One WTC and Four WTC will be topped off at the same time, if they continue the construction at the current pace. I don't know if they are purposely trying to do that or not, but it would be great if they did. It would be so nostalgic; seeing 2 towers rise again at Ground Zero.
