Broadcasters moving here would add about 4 million potential viewers in N.J. and on L.I.
Or, 162 viewers if you weed out the ones who haven't used an antenna in ten years.

Yes, it was nice to get a mention in the Inaugural Poem (One Today).

...One sky: since the Appalachians and Sierras claimed
their majesty, and the Mississippi and Colorado worked
their way to the sea. Thank the work of our hands:
weaving steel into bridges, finishing one more report
for the boss on time, stitching another wound
or uniform, the first brush stroke on a portrait,
or the last floor on the Freedom Tower
jutting into a sky that yields to our resilience.

More on Durst's plans for the antenna...

http://www.radioworld.com/article/developer-plans-broadcast-spire-for--wtc-in-new-york/213795

Durst expects its new broadcast center at 1 WTC to generate more than $10 million in rents and fees from broadcasters annually. Upfront capital costs to build the antenna are projected to be approximately $7.4 million, according to the developers. Projected total cost for the new building is now estimated at $3.9 billion, according to the NY Daily News.

Durst also operates rooftop broadcast facilities atop 4 Times Square in midtown Manhattan. The development firm is promoting the 1 WTC antenna as the city’s premium broadcast antenna platform. It plans to market both its locations to broadcasters with 1 WTC serving as a primary site with redundant power and 4 Times Square as backup, Durst stated in a press release.

The Empire State Building, 1,250 feet tall with a 204-foot antenna, is home to 19 FM stations — 14 on the master FM antenna — and most of the city’s digital television transmitters. Many radio and television broadcasters migrated to Empire after the collapse of the World Trade Center’s twin towers in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The former WTC’s North Tower featured a 360-foot broadcast mast.

A report in the Wall Street Journal said the Empire State Building generated $16.1 million in rent from broadcasters in 2010, according to securities filings with the SEC. Malkin Holdings, owner of the Empire State Building, did not respond to messages left by Radio World for this story. Jim Stagnitto, director of engineering for New York Public Radio, said he believes broadcasters transmitting signals from Empire will take a wait-and-see stance on 1 WTC. The Empire State Building’s rooftop facilities include nearly every radio and television broadcaster in the city. It’s long been rumored that the master FM antenna tower on Empire eventually will need to be re-built. Olkowski said he’s aware of no imminent plans to do so...... The Empire State Building also has what is referred to as the “mini-master” antenna, which replaced three separate panel antennas in 1996. It is home to WQHT(FM), WCBS(FM) and WPLJ(FM). “Empire has been the only player in town for over a decade. I believe competition is a good thing. The new tower will give broadcasters more options. That’s always good,” Olkowski said. He reported that Clear Channel and CBS currently are rebuilding some of their facilities at Empire.

Yes, it was taken from Greenwich, CT, precisaly from Tod's Point Beach AKA Greenwich Point (the picture is contained in an album called "A walk in Tod's Point")

Very cool picture, you can appreciate the earth's curvature (for example you can't see the deck of the Verrazano, obscured by the sea)

It would be nice to see a picture from the same point, 4 or 5 years from now, when 432 Park, HY and maybe other skyscraper are finished or well ahead in their construction.

By the way, it is about 49 km. away from Lower Manhattan.

Here it is a similar picture, you can also see, under the tree, the buildings of New Rochelle.

This is one of a *choice* handful of Sound-view pics of the Apple....A *wonderful* shot, this.

FYI, The towers of the Throg's Neck Bridge are to the left peeking above the tree-line, and the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge is almost dead-center in the photo. And I think JC's tallest is the very first high-rise you see from the left.

The Skyline view is so incredible that I'm still trying to figure out what building that is which marks the space between Midtown and Downtown. Trump maybe?

Edit: @CCs77: Thank you for the distance info (49 km= 30.44&c miles). Distance-wise, this is essentially tantamount to an unimpeded view the City from Jayne's Hill located about a mile from Long Island's Nassau/Suffolk county border. FYI, it's also the highest peak on Long Island @ max. 400' ASL, and an *extremely* short drive from my home.
The vista I just described would certainly lend itself to considerably greater detail owing to the height of the vantage point. IOW, if this were taken from Jayne's Hill, the Verrazano almost certainly *would* be visible, but only with the aid of an *extremely* high-powered lens. Also, as mentioned in another post, the "Big V"'s 693' towers--nearly 100' higher than the LIPA stacks in Northport, *themselves* reportedly visible from as far inland as the Hudson Palisades on a clear day--would surely be seen to tip towards each other due to the earth's curvature.
And yes indeed, the cityscape come year 2015 should be a sight indeed...I'm thinking possibly twice as massive as right now(?)!
Oh BTW...Have I mentioned, to the point of this thread, that 1WTC looks simply immense, even from that distance?
I feel so small........

What sits on the ESB looks much more like a spire than, what will be on 1WTC. Strip all the eqipment from ESB, make it look Permanant or a spire and let it be the cities tallest again

I don't think that is the Verrazano Bridge though. From Greenwich, the line of sight in that direction covers Queens and Brooklyn before getting to the Verrazano Bridge. Plus, that's not the angle of the Verrazano one would see from Greenwich. I'm pretty sure that's the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge.

Either way, awesome photo!

Yes, I think you are right, it must be the Bronx-Whitestone. Drawing a straight line in GE, the Verrazano should be slightly to the left of the Bronx-Whitestone, could it be those little things barely visible above the horizon, over that guy or girl bend over with the blue sweater? By the way the Verrazano is about 59 km. away from this point.

I guess that it is not an every day view, it must be pretty good atmospheric conditions, since it is so far away. A light haze could be enough to obscure that view.

I think that is quite likely - im actually not sure what else could account for those two points sticking up over the horizon. dont forget that the Verrazano is in the top 10 or so as far as tallest bridges in the world at 211 meters. i dont think there is anything in that sight path that is very tall, other than the Verrazano

Personally, I miss the "Chinese food box" base! The re-done "spire" is not too exciting as many have expressed their opinion on here like me. I am wondering though if the the round "telecommunication ring" is now going to be just plain also? I at least thought the previous original drawings of the t.-ring added a crown effect which looked good.

Like all, we will have to wait to see the final results and then we can judge.

Any word on whether the sphere will be re-located to the Memorial Plaza or beside 1WTC? I remember some speculation about this being done awhile back, but never heard a final word on it. Would love to see them bring the sphere back, and maybe even restore it to its original form and put it near the base of the tower. That being said, I'm sure in the future there will be new sculptures that will spring up all over the Plaza to compliment the buildings and the space.

The communications ring will be bare until broadcasters lease space there to have their communication dishes installed. I dont belive it will ever look like the rendering though. Communication dishes come in all shapes and sizes.

WTC workers scrawl graffiti of defiance, hope

January 24, 2013

On most construction projects, workers are discouraged from signing or otherwise scrawling on the iron and concrete. At the skyscraper rising at ground zero, though, they're being invited to leave messages for the ages.

"Freedom Forever. WTC 9/11" is scrawled on a beam near the top of the gleaming, 104-story One World Trade Center. "Change is from within" is on a beam on the roof. Another reads: "God Bless the workers & inhabitants of this bldg." One of the last pieces of steel hoisted up last year sits near a precarious edge. The message on it reads: "We remember. We rebuild. We come back stronger!" It is signed by a visitor to the site last year — President Barack Obama.

The words on beams, walls and stairwells of the skyscraper that replaces the twin towers lost on Sept. 11, 2001, form the graffiti of defiance and rebirth, what ironworker supervisor Kevin Murphy calls "things from the heart." They're remembrances of the 2,700 people who died, and testaments to the hope that rose from a shattered morning. "This is not just any construction site, this is a special place for these guys," says Murphy of the 1,000 men and some women who work in the building at any given time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. "Everyone here wants to be here, they want to put this building up," Murphy says. "They're part of the redemption."

On a frigid, windy winter day, with the 9/11 memorial fountain straight below and the Statue of Liberty in the distance, Murphy supervised a crew of men guiding the first piece of the steel spire that will top out the building at a dizzying 1,776 feet — the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. In the rooftop iron scaffolding for the spire, 105 floors up, a beam pays homage to Lillian Frederick, a 46-year-old administrative assistant who died on the 105th floor of the south tower, pierced by a terrorist-hijacked airliner.

A popular Spanish phrase is penned next to two names on one concrete pillar: "Te Amo Tres Metros Sobre el Cielo," meaning, "I love you three steps above heaven."
Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff wrote: "With you in spirit — those who perished, those who fought, those who build."

Time and daily routines have softened the communal grief as the workers carry on, trading jokes and gruff male banter. Some ends up in whimsical graffiti marking World Cup soccer matches, New York Giants Super Bowl victories and other less-weighty matters that have gone on since construction began six years ago. One crudely drawn map of the neighborhood down below shows the location of a popular strip club.

People on the ground below will never see the spontaneous private thoughts high in the Manhattan sky. The graffiti will disappear as the raw basic structure is covered with drywall, ceiling panels and paint for tenants moving into the 3 million square feet of office space by 2014. Knowing this, workers and visitors often take photographs of special bits of graffiti, so the words will live on.

If you're talking about sections below the guy wires, then they shouldn't have rings judging by the render.

Exactly. see the tapered section above the comm rings and below where the guy-wires attach?? It tapers up, then there's a straight section, but no ring between them. the rings don't start until above there (Level 15) That's why I'm confused by the photo with a ring/platform at the top of the tapered section

I still do not like how the tower tapers toward the top--I think it really loses the dominance that the original twins had (with the same size going straight up). I know most people on the board love this design (but hate the new "spire"), but I really wish the new WTC had more "bigness" to it. I see it up close and I still don't have that "awe" that the originals gave me. Just my opinion.

This tower will look plenty dominant once the glass cladding on top is finished, it will make it much more streamlined and make it look every bit as tall as it is! Also the antenna once installed will really make it look tall visually. But in my book it already is a behemouth! ;)

the columns were clad in panels that were very thin aluminum, but due to the 12' length and width, they weighted about 100 pounds. Sadly, some people theorize that on 9/11 many lives were lost when a fluttering piece of metal was actually a fast moving missile. The accents at the lobby and mechanical floors were made of polished stainless steel.

On a happier note, I've been fighting an unstable internet connection to bring you the most recent update to the spire model. The internal platforms and ladder of the two new sections are not yet modeled, but the model is available through the 3DWarehouse in the updated form.
I made a few with a cut away.
