Some of them are, some of them aren't. I check this thread at least once a day, and from what I can tell, what the PA/architects have decided to do with the base cladding has either been a) decided and not announced or b) not decided. No news or even rumors have circulated yet as to the solution they're proposing. Only speculation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's where we stand on the base cladding: no updates as of yet.

Well you should pay more attention then, it was already posted a while back:
A controversial tower rises at ground zero (http://archrecord.construction.com/projects/portfolio/2011/09/One-World-Trade-Center.asp)
At the ground, each side of the building will have a cable-net-supported glazed portal, 60 feet tall, although the lobby will be otherwise surrounded in concrete. The architects had planned to camouflage the podium with tempered and laminated prismatic glass panels that would reflect, refract, and transmit light, in order to “establish a relationship with the water cascading in the memorial pools,” says Childs. However, after discovering that tempering caused the panels to bow, interfering with the laminating process, the project team devised another solution. The alternate, which sources describe as glass fins projecting from the facade at various angles, is now in the bidding phase but has yet to be finalized.

Something like this:

I say the same every year (for the last 5 years) when I come to this thread and expect some descent progress (in comparison to every other country in the world).
I could have built this quicker if I made it from matchsticks!
But then again, I'm going from this thread to see how the Chicago Spire's getting on, which I haven't checked in on for 3 years...but I'm sure they've built that already...

How are glass fins going to solve the problem that they had with the previous design? They're both glass, so wouldn't the fins still shatter in a bomb blast?

The problems with the previous design had nothing to do with bomb blasts. The contractor just couldn't meet the design specs.

The problems were that the glass broke into huge deadly shards when the panes were hit by a force sufficient enough to damage them. Seems like a bomb blast could do that. ;)

Port, Silverstein say W.T.C. construction is on track

October 19, 2011
BY ALINE REYNOLDS

Construction at the World Trade Center is forging ahead as planned. That was the message the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Silverstein Properties conveyed at the Community Board 1 W.T.C. Redevelopment Committee meeting on Monday, Oct. 17.

“There was a great deal of coordination [involved] for the success of the opening of the 9/11 Memorial on the 10th anniversary,” said Quentin Brathwaite, the Port Authority’s assistant director of W.T.C. construction. “With those dates behind us, the Port Authority has continued its renewed focus to the perimeter of the site.”

One W.T.C., which is slated to be topped out sometime next spring, is now 86 floors high. With close to 1,000 workers on the project, the building, Brathwaite said, has become a “city within a city.”

“What’s really amazing is that the building is really commanding even more of a presence in the community,” said Brathwaite. “From almost every vantage point, you see the tower rising — not only from within Community Board 1, but as far west as New Jersey and as far east as Queens and Brooklyn.”

I live in Long Beach and I can see it everyday walking to the train. Much easier to see now that it's still dark in the morning, it's lit up so bright it already dwarfs the Empire State building from my view. It's a great sight to see each morning.

How are glass fins going to solve the problem that they had with the previous design? They're both glass, so wouldn't the fins still shatter in a bomb blast?

The contractor had a very hard time properly tempering the laminated prismatic glass. The issue isn't whether the glass would shatter in a bomb blast, but what kind of pieces the glass breaks into. Ideally the glass would break into harmless little cubes, but because of the shape of the prisms, it kept breaking into dangerous shards. Yes, the fins would still shatter in a blast, but it's much easier to make them break into the harmless cubes. Last months documentary on the WTC had a segment about the failure of the prismatic panels.

Nobody uses roofing shingles for a flat roof. The typical roofing material for flat roofs is asphaltic membrane.

Ellis Island in the foreground, so Liberty State Park most likely.

I definitely don't think it will be. I don't think NYC will be like any of the other cities that put a height limit in place so that nothing can surpass a notable structure in that city: i.e. Washington D.C., Munich. 1WTC will probably be different than other constraining landmarks because it's not so much about having it be one of the only proud-standing structures as it is to prove a point that we will rebuild from the ashes. It's height alone is significant to the point of rebuilding it and I honestly don't think that will present any hesitation to other future structures in the city to approach it or surpass it.

Anyone know when they are going to put some kind of cladding/cover over the base so it blends better with the rest of the tower? Once they do this, the tower will look much more uniform and streamlined, and taller!

It's been there for a few months. Presumably, it will be for when the glass is installed and whatever else that have to do to the outside of the base. The south facing side of the base has a black mesh over it so I guess it's not surprising to have not noticed it.

My pictures from today. It was a great day to take pictures from Brooklyn Bridge Park. No weddings, and not much of a wind. The cranes were moving about at the top installing new steel.

Wow that cloudbank gives the illusion of mountains in the background; very cool! We sometimes get that phenomenon here in the wintertime after a cold front, when cold air goes over the warm water offshore

The tower is very small in this picture, it's in the red circle.
