By now, they've probably begun to install it. The East side cant be completed until the elevator is removed. I think they plan to wrap the cladding around the north side and install the other third on the east side before the elevator is taken down.

I have no pics, but I can tell you the North face is hard to photograph because it is directly across the street from the Verizon Building (140 West St) so the best you can see is from the street which currently is covered by construction platforms leading to the pedestrian overpass to the WFC. If I'm not mistaken, it has the least amount of glass installed of the 4 sides.

Here's a view of the North side of the base. But like Hudson said, not much is going on, on that side. The East side of the base cladding has stopped due to the elevator.

It's unfortunate, but hopefully the other towers will be a distraction when they are built. The sheer size of the tower group will be an eyeful, similar to the original complex. The antenna was an afterthought, if that.

I'll say this and recuse myself from further participation in the argument:

Give me a choice between this spire and that of 4XSQ and most of you should know by now which one I'd take. I mean, if you prefer the latter on Tower One, it's your call; but eh.......

All I'm saying that this spire at least looks like a complete, symmetric, visually uniform amalgam of a carefully planned whole. 4XSQ and the old North Tower had the exact opposite feel to me.

Final 2¢.

At least, they should put a giant flag of USA (let's say, 50 meters long, 25 meters tall) at the top of the spire. That would make people forget how ugly the spire is...

And would be quite symbolic for the World Trade Center !!

I don't usually comment on these boards, but I was just in NYC a few weeks ago and saw the building myself for the first time, and I have to agree that the spire is actually not as terrible as I thought it would be.

Maybe it's just me, but seeing the building in real life, the spire was really kind of a non-entity. Nothing really draws your attention to it, either good or bad.

Is it the best spire design that could have possibly gone up at the WTC? Probaby not. Is it the crime against humanity that many people on this site thought it would be? Not really that either.

For many critics I think that's the whole point. I mean the original design hinged on that beacon of hope that would shine for miles. Now it's gone from being a symbol of a torch to a basic broadcast antenna. I hope history shits on Durst.

only the beacon is still up there and it's amazing. I'm guessing you haven't seen it lit yet? There's no videos of it yet but it's been tested several times. I'd say it's one of the most awe inspiring things i've seen. Nobody will care what it rests atop of. The most important original design feature of the spire is still in place. That bright light is still sitting up at 1776ft thanks to the 'ugly' mast below it.

I will admit the spire is looking better as they remove temporary platforms. It even blends quite well with the skyline. That however ignores the fact of what it replaced and the intention of what it was supposed to represent. As is it's mediocre. As proposed it would have been stunning. It changes the feel of the building from optimistic and hopeful, to industrial and borderline dystopian.

On another note I will say that with the fins open I'm actually starting to like the base more than the original.

I've grown to like the spire. Even though I wish they had kept the original design, up close and even afar it looks gritty and intimidating. Maybe one day they might modify it to something different. But for now we have a beautiful tower which is symbolic for the city and the nation.

I don't disagree with that point. One thing that struck me was that as a pedestrian looking up from street level, you can't even see the spire. It's largely blocked by the building itself. I just don't know how much the cladding would have changed that.

To me, a bigger criticism of the building is that the glass around the base doesn't seem to match the glass on the tower very well. Also, this was my first trip back to the city since the summer of 2000. I attended college just north of there, so I remeber the old towers very well. Compared to them, this building doesn't seem to dominate as much. Perhaps that will change when all of the other towers get built...

That's the best we can hope for at this point. No one really paid attention to the original spire either. The only thing that changes that is if they insists on including this thing in the official height, which they probably will. It's from that standpoint that we will be forced to consider the design elements of it, which are horrible.

why would painting it white make it more appealing?

GeorgiaBoy24

:previous: Because the triangular lines and the the parapet are white. It simply flows with the existing identity of the tower and makes the mast look less tacked on.

painting the spire white would create a different, more bland effect than the corners which would be redundant. Since the spire's already different.

I agree Chris but the fact is that there is 408 feet of mediocrity on the most symbolic building in America. Sure buildings like 432 Park Avenue and 225 57th will be stunning, but they don't stand over the graves of thousands of people. This tower needed to provide vigil for the past and a beacon of hope for the future. The thing on top fails to deliver that. At least having a consistent color on the spire would make the thing look like a half-ass effort was put into it, be it silver or white or whatever.

The greatest comment i've seen on the spire. All I can say it's sad that nobody decided to either keep the original spire (radome) or came up with another design. I guess nobody seems to care about the meaning of this building, that will probably always have two names.

Yeah, I have to say that the "spire" is certainly un-inspiring. The original design was vastly superior. I mean, we'll get used to it, but when someone changes a large aspect of a building like that after it's been designed, mid construction, just to save money, the result usually isn't very good.

I know what you are saying.

Overtime most will just igonore the spire issue and move on and appreciate what we got.

Most people ignore it now, because they are not skyscraper followers. I am a skyscraper fan, and I know better. Most people just assume that the "greedy developers" will do
what they want to do, regardless. I usually disagree with that, but in this case, I'm forced to agree.

Sure buildings like 432 Park Avenue and 225 57th will be stunning, but they don't stand over the graves of thousands of people.

The sad thing is that there are so many people already out of touch with 9/11 and what this building represents. There are many, even here on this board, who see this as just another supertall,
a piece that fits into an already impressive skyline. It's an understanding of what it all means that brings distaste to so many. But for some, the mast is just plain tacky.

That ferris wheel is going to provide some of the best harbor views.

With talk about the spire, it wouldn't surprise me if down the road they decide to modify it and make it look better via cladding. I understand its a sensitive issue and yes i view the WTC1 as a symbolic tower there to honor and represent the sacrifice of the nation and those who died in vain by the evil that brought them to there demise, but it wouldn't surprise me if overtime they are to add some sort of modification to make it what it was originally intended to be. Right now it seems more of a money and time deadline problem.

Once the money roles in from rents, and tourism i'm sure they will consider it. Similar to how the ESB modified its spire.

i don't think they're still programming it. They've shown that they can light it fully now if they had the go ahead. But they're probably waiting to do some sort of pompous ceremony on 9/11/13.

Actually I talked to a guy who was working on it last week. Never gave me a "reveal" date but said they're still working on it.

I believe 9/11/13 would've made a great opening date for this tower. Maybe the complex can officially open on 9/11/16 (the fifteenth anniversary), because 2 and 3 will probably be up by then. Anyway, love this building and I cannot wait for it to be opened!

no, that's a storage unit that's been on top of the 3rd comm ring for awhile now. The hood vents likely won't protrude beyond the rings.

Looking from the Jersey side, the first guy wire pretty hard to make out. The Comms ring extends so far up and the hub where they attach is so low on the mast I don't think this will look anywhere near as striking as the original design and renders called for, but I'll withhold my full judgement until it's completely.

Not to throw fuel on the fire, but if the mast was covered in the white acrylic radome as originally planned, I'm sure the dark guy wires would stand out much more.

In this picture, mentally taking the crane off, we can see the 1WTC almost as finished. Although I would rather have the radome, Now that the temporary platforms are gone, I think it doesn't look that bad either, with the remaining platforms rhythmically placed.

I suposse they have to install all four before they begin to pull, otherwise they could desestabilize the spire. I guess they have to pull each one a little bit in cycles in order not to desestabilize the spire.

I find it really interesting that the guy wires, which are intended to be mostly functional, are what ties the entire building together. Aesthetically, they subtly echo the tapering effect of the building below and make the building seem more complete and pleasing to the eye. I wish there were more of them, like in the original design. (I wish they had kept the original spire, too.)

Yeah, it's a trailer. They do a lot of live close ups on Good Day NY, and everytime I see it, I can't help but think what a great observation deck that could have been up there, the nice
circular walk.

Three double guys. You never see four. Three is actually more stable and less prone to oscillations.

Looks like I was wrong. I'm kind of surprised since I've put up a hundred towers with the math showing that three sets of guys makes for a more stable tower than four of the same rating. When you have an even number, it allows forces from and single cable to transfer to the opposite cable, causing all kinds of grief that an odd number of guys prevents.

I don't know how "real" these guy wires are - the spire has stood without them for months now. The schedule to install these would have been much earlier if they were essential. We all know we can have pretty strong storms in July and the engineers were confident that the guy wires were not necessary during this time. Though they might give more stability in the end, I think they're more for looks than for structure, imo...

I think the guy wires are needed more with a radome. Now, wind can pass right through the spire. With a radome, I suspect it would sway significantly.

Although it was mentioned by someone earlier, here is the actual NY Daily News article on the photo contest for 1WTC.

One World Trade Center holds photo contest to send three winners to the top
The contest encourages amateur photographers to submit their shots of the tower to its Facebook page. The three with the most likes will give the winners an early preview of the view from the top of the 1,776-foot-tall tower.

It doesn't work that way. The radome would have made the mast more aerodynamic and actually have reduced peak loads. The turbulence caused by the naked structure is much harder to predict.
The mast would probably stand on it's own, but the loads will be easier to handle when they're distributed over a wider area by the guys. The guys will also make the roof much more able to handle loads caused by an impact, earthquake or a hurricane. Several hundred tons of mast shaking back and forth would be a helluva load for that one small area to handle.

Construction Update: One World Trade Center

Work is beginning to wrap up at One World Trade Center, which saw its antenna completed this past May. The 1,368-foot supertall dominates the World Trade Center site, though its reign will not be permanent; 200 Greenwich, aka Two World Trade Center, will rise 1,350 feet, blunting the impact of One World Trade on the skyline. That assumes 200 Greenwich eventually gets built, which – at this point – looks unlikely.

Besides minor ongoing facade installation, most of the remaining work is on the tower’s interior. Designed by SOM, it seems the metal strips that define the edges of the tower’s isosceles-shaped sides are already turning a slight shade of yellow; likely a result of air pollution, but proof that smartphone-age materials remain susceptible to classic problems. Given One World Trade Center’s enormous price tag, maintenance funding is probably not a major concern – but it’s disheartening that the metal is already taking on an unexpected hue.

Such an unfair assessment of the steel considering the tower hasn't even been cleaned yet. That means there are literally years of grime that will be cleaned away that this article is not mentioning.

Years of grime when most of it has only been there for under a year... OK?

It began to become apparent earlier this spring, btw.

The yellow tint is the reflection from the World Financial Center - if you go to Chelsea piers or Tribeca or anywhere else that isn't at an extreme angle to 1WTC, you'll notice that the steel is just dully reflective, hence the tint.

I think that author of that article was just expressing his frustration over the time and money that the project has took. Judging from the tone. Plus even steel is victim to the environmental chemistry of oxidation. It could happen anywhere really.

One World Trade Center holds photo contest to send three winners to the top

One World Trade Center has set its sights on being not just America's tallest building, but the most photographed as well.
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is holding a photography contest for the monumental 1,776-foot-tall skyscraper that will give three lucky winners an exclusive trip to the top.

Photographers behind the three most 'liked' photos posted to the WTC Progress Facebook page from now until Aug. 25 will be given a sneak peak tour of the "jewel of New York's skyline" as early as a year and a half before it opens to the public.

This picture actually moved me.... and I wasn't expecting it. It is so close to the vision I have in my mind.... back in 1973.... as a child on the circle line.

I keep bouncing back between tears and a broad grin. I'm so happy with the way it turned out! It's undeniably and unapologetically American. And it fits perfectly into the NYC skyline. Well done!

Yup, sure is. They will be removed the cranes very soon. It will take a while.
