After I took the picture, the kid on the bike looked back and said, "that's the World Trade Center right? I didn't even notice it."

It's already blended into the skyline.

^^^ Without the cranes and such, this is actually the real deal in front of us. Not too shabby but it could have been better and still has the potential to be better.

maybe i'm one of the few, but I like the way the spire looks with all the platforms on them. I know some will come down, but I wished they were staying. They help the spire look larger and fuller imo. Helping with the size of the spire.

I still would have preferred the radome and I was shocked when they changed the design but I have to admit this turned out quite nice and the spire and tower actually look incredibly nice.

This photo was particularly nice and like I said this whole tower is looking pretty amazing

:( Forgive my very poor choice of words... but I think the "head" is way, way cooler than the "shaft." Looks like something that would be shot from the Death Star if they used mechanical ammunition.

So if they would just skin the shaft sections in between the decks in a fashion that matches the head.... and paint it all black like it seems to appear in the above photo... then we'd have ourselves one awesome, Tactical Death Spire to top off this magnificent megastructure.

But that's just my opinion. YMMV.

Your ____ May Vary.
On topic: I like it just as is. The brief color shift below the beacon really IMO doesn't make too much of a difference, especially the farther out you see it. The guyed masts, once they get installed, should facilitate better viewing of the spantenna.

What 's left to do at the top of this building? Will they start installing the guy wires soon? When will they start installing the antennas on the communication rings? When will they bring down the doghouse and two cranes? When will they start to bring down the servince elevator on the east side of the building? I feel once the antennas are installed on the comm rings it will bring some bulk to the top, but the antenna/spire situation is a failure and could have been much better if cladded with the radome as intended.

Guy wires around mid to end of June, need to remove the temporary catwalks on spire, temporary erection steel, remove doghouse and spire crane in july & august, then remove north favco .

TV antennas or microwave dishes on rings depend if Durst signs any leases, nothing goes in till there is a user.

East hoist stays up for a year or more for conde fitout etc.

Will the east hoist come down to the highest Conde floor though? Or stay all the way up to the roof...so I'm guessing glass won't really be finished until that hoist is gone.

That right just like the west side service hoist, the glass will not be complete until it comes down. Since this building is supposed to be finished by the end of this year, I wonder when tenants can start moving in?

The construction is coming along nicely but the buildings' spire looks strange right now due to those cranes. I also dislike the sphere-like objects along the antenna-spire. The original plans never showed these spheres. To me, they ressemble the New Years' Ball at 1 Times Square waiting to fall at Midnight. I was hoping the spheres would be temporary but it appears that they will stay.

Can lightning like last night do damage to the spire?

Not at all. That spire is practically a giant lightning rod. I'd expect the tiny antenna at the very top of the spire (or the "rocket" that houses the beacan) is a lightning rod. It's made to withstand the strikes of lightning and directs the strikes away from equipment on the roof. Another form of human innovation we can tip our hats in gratitude to Benjamin Franklin.

It's all a matter of how the spire had to be assembled. The smaller "spheres" are actually catwalks that help construction workers scale to the top of the spire whenever the beacon light or the FAA bulb (technical term?) need maintenance.

The Larger "sphere" (which actually looks like one ;) ) is necessary to secure the "spantenna" to the roof via the soon-to-be-installed guy cables. Of course the cranes will come down in due time (next month at the eraliest); but until some deals are reached to put telecom eqipment in (i.e. dishes for the rings beneath the spire) any installation equipment needed to place them will stay up.
We might have to wait a few years for all the unneeded stuff to be cleared out, most of the telecom apparatus tacked on and the top of the building in more or less its final form.

^^^ Makes you realize how out of place and dowdy the Goldman Sachs building looks compared to the new WTC towers.

You really think so? On the contrary, I think Goldman Sachs looks right at home... as a modern extension of the WFC, and a sort of transitional element from old to new. I think without GS, the contrast between the 80s-ness of the WFC buildings and the new WTC towers would be starker and more severe. Plus, it creates a visual stepping stone from the tiers and setbacks of the WFC buildings, to 4 WTC and eventually 3 and 2.

Unrelated -- I hope to see some photos soon of the side of the base with the fully extended glass fins. Just from the sections I've seen so far, the look is much improved. When you don't have all that glass stacked and pressed together, that sickly green gives way to the intended clear/blue color, while simultaneously masking those irritating horizontal stripes.

I can't wait until this building gets a good bath. You can't easily notice, but it's filthy. That glass is going to be like a mirror when it's clean.

No sh!t. You can clearly see on on the "west side" where they removed one of the external elevators... there's a darker 'line' of cladding running from top to bottom. All that glass should look the same, but since the glass to replace the elevator is technically newer.. and therefore cleaner... it just ends up looking like a racing stripe.

WASH THE BUILDING PLEASE!!!

Just checked out earthcam, looks like they're dismantling the spire crane as well as those "sphere-like" things around the spire.

Boom going down. It also seems that the lightning rod is gone. Maybe it's just the picture.

It looks like the two uppermost temporary catwalks are gone. The spire crane maybe took them down as the other crane perhaps cannot reach that high.

... Of course it's just the picture... why would they remove a lightning rod

Awhile ago, one of the crazier members of this forum assured me that the smaller platforms on the antenna would be removed because they were just for the construction process. I did not buy it. Looks like i was correct.

Define "smaller".

Because if you look closely, all the permanent platforms (NO yellow railing posts) had smaller temporary ones (WITH yellow railing posts) right underneath them.

The topmost two temporary platforms are now removed, leaving the permanent ones behind. According to the image above, there are seven temporary ones still to be removed.

For more clarity, please compare the image above with this graphic I made a few weeks back:

All in all, I would say that the crazy forum member was right and you were wrong.

I love how those fins are going to bring a strong vertical aesthetic to the facade.

Two top most removed. Eight temp circular catwalks remaining.

So clearly now that the catwalks are down, the lighting is rigged. I bet these cheesy bastards are going to wait until the fourth before they turn the beacon on.
