Wish the ironworkers got to sign the beam before it was raised...all kinds of other people did instead (other trades, police officers, etc).

When do the ironworkers believe this will top out?

EDIT- Carlos your pictures are beautiful.

DCM is is scheduled to work this Sat & Sunday. Still need to build 80 foot tall dog houses above the roof for the cranes to jump up into so roof can be poured this fall, so plenty of work left this summer.

What do you mean by "80foot dog houses"

Thanks for the update

Think temporary steel structures above the roof (105) level so the cranes can jack themselves up and their base support will be above the roof level so the concrete roof can be poured and the cranes can be shifted around to allow for the placement of colling towers and errection of rings and spire.

As it turns out, that beam was signed by President Obama, Michelle Obama, Governors Cuomo and Christie, and Mayor Bloomberg.

So this was the topping out beam, I suppose.

Telecommunications spire? oh please... Is that Durst's pathetic attempt at getting what is now clearly an antenna counted in the final height? :whatthefuck:

I have no problem with this very nice tower being 1373 feet tall.
Durst just needs to give up on the BS. By removing the cladding the spire is no longer an architectural element and should be recognized as such by the CTBUH.

If you go to www.onewtc.org and click on the office leasing tab and then click on floor plans. There is a drawing of the building that as you run the mouse over it, tells you who has leased that floor. When you get to the top look at the drawing of the spire. There is still a lot of architectural design that went into this. It really gives you a better view of how nice this spire will be, even without the cladding. There wont be any equipment on it when it's finished. There may never be any equipment on it. I'm sure they will use the rings first. I still believe it will count towards the total height.

What you're seeing is basically the "bones" of the spire that was to be, no different than the antenna we've already seen. Nothing great about it, and there is no comparison to what was to be.

Whatever the CTBUH decides, it will probably be its most controversial decision since the Petronas. Still, I have a hinch that since the mast has long been an architectural element of the building (main feature of the logo for crying out loud!) they will count it in total height. Frankly, pretty ridiculous to count the dopey NY Times Tower stick and not this. :sly:

NewYorker2009
Aug 7, 2012, 1:16 AM
:previous: You have a point there. The NYT Tower's mast is a joke, I feel like I want to fling it off the building with my finger or just get a chainsaw and slice it off. They should count One World Trade's antenna those pricks I mean the height is there and it is being built while the building is under construction so it should count since it was part of the actual design.

I usually don't take part in the spire argument fiasco, but why should this antenna be counted?
It's an antenna. It's radome enclosure is what made it an antenna, the enclosure, enclosed the antenna. Now that's it's been dropped. It's an antenna.
If they include that, they should count the sears tower.

Since broadcasting equipment isn't going to be installed for a while, there's still a change for Childs to find a solution to the spire fiasco. The spire is what gave 1 WTC its great crown over the NYC skyline.

Well as I mentioned, the antenna is part of One World Trade Center's design despite the elimination of the radome enclosure. It should be counted since it isn't being added later on long after the building is completed. The antenna's atop ESB, Willis Tower, and the original 1 WTC were all added later on so it would be cheating in a sense. It's all up to the CTBUH to decide if it should count or not. Even if it isn't counted it will still be America's Tallest by pinnacle height.

Yet,the spire enclosed the antenna. If you remove that enclosure than it's no longer a spire, just an antenna. Honestly, i loved the spire, yet it seemed simple to call it one just because it has a fancy cone like structure built over it.

I know I already asked this, but its been 2 months, so things could of changed since.

But, How will the tower look in mid-late October?
How heigh will the glass be?
Will there be base cladding?
Will the parts of the antenna be on the building?

13 New Renderings of One WTC Without its Sister Towers

Tuesday, August 7, 2012
by Jessica Dailey

If you were wondering what the new World Trade Center would look like if One WTC was the only tower going up, today's your lucky day. The Port Authority and Durst Organization released 13 new renderings showing the tower's "recent design modifications," which we can't really discern (the antenna looks different?), but we did notice that they forgot two of the other towers—only Four WTC makes an appearance. Also, it is going to be blindingly bright at night, so get ready. The renderings show views from Brooklyn, New Jersey, and Staten Island, plus the W Hotel, New York by Gehry, and Pier 40, which may not be possible by the time the tower opens.

Here's 3 of them, the "better" looking ones...

Note:Everything is speculative and based on the current progress.

Facade should be at the 90th floor.
Base cladding should start installation during October,as told by the PA.
The mast shouldn't start until early Winter,at the latest early 2013;with the mast finishing 6 months later.

I'm not so sure about that. Look at 4WTC in real life. That glass is pretty dang reflective and colorless. Now look at 1WTC in real life. Bluer.

uuh it's not the only tower going up, 4WTC is already topped out about. Those renderings are ok but don't do towers 1 and 4 justice, they already look better than that in real life and aren't even completed.

Sad to not see towers 3 and 4 though, and 99 church street

In Updated Designs for 1 World Trade Center, Does the Spire Still Look Like a Spire?

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_eveningfrombrooklyn2_small.jpg?w=600

Matt Chaban 8/07/12

After all the wrangling over the updated designs for the Durst Organization-overseen 1 World Trade Center (we’ve heard there was a list of 20 changes the developer wanted from the Port, all eventually granted), new renderings have been released for the project. They show a building that looks a little sharper, perhaps a little less striking, but something still bound to dominate the skyline, as if that were not already abundantly clear from the just-about-topped-out tower. Have a look for yourself and decide whether this is an improvement.

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_dayviewfromwhotel_small.jpg?w=300
One of the most debated pieces has been the spire, no longer encased in a giant sculpture, now looking wispy but visible.

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_eveningviewfromwhotel_small.jpg?w=275
The facade is meant to look solid and grand.

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_viewfrompier40_small.jpg?w=600
With or without its spire, the tower still dominates the downtown skyline.

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_eveningfrombrooklyn1_small.jpg?w=600
From here, where's the point?

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_viewfromnj_small.jpg?w=600
A new day dawns downtown.

The new "spire" looks really thin and you can barely see it from far away (based on the pictures). I prefer the old, thicker design but at least a spire is being built.

What scares me is that there is no 2 WTC in those pictures and 3 WTC is capped off.

Oh man, the renderings... I really hope most or all of the cladding will be up on my next visit so I can take some really awesome pictures! The higher the cladding goes, the bigger it feels. Well, it already IS huge, even with the steel exposed... But the glass gives it a final and definite feeling of being a supertall. :)

There's probably no one more insulted and angry by the Durst's organization raping of his design for nothing more than a negligible amount of money than architect David Childs himself. I'm sorry, but no expensive rendering is going to wash over the ugliness of that industrial piece of steel on top of the building that they're trying to play off as a spire. Straightening the chamfered corners on the base really just makes the whole thing look like a bunker. Well...at least you won't be able to see the base from far away, but the spire really does look like shit. You can roll it around in sugary lights all you want, but at the end of the day, that's still one ugly bitch.

At this point, I'm so scared to see what Silverstein is going to do to WTC2...if that design gets screwed up, we might end with three could-have-been buildings on the most famous, symbolic, and important construction site in the United States of America...just to save maybe 5-10% of the project's total cost for developers who could absorb that minimal loss without even batting an eye.

Spire isn't good. If they maybe widen it up sorta like the BOA tower and maybe light the entire thing up lets say, bright white, Than Maybe. But as it is in the renderings, its a major disappointment.
