If you look at the pic in the post above this one you can see the brackets set into the edge of the floor slab. They just bolt em on.

Looks like they are getting ready to lift the first piece for the southeast corner. This one is in full view of the earthcam !

Nice! Now, finally an end to the same repeated question.

While I do admit that the questions on when it'd be up had been asked to death, I think the excitement comes from the fact that it's the first feeling of "completion". Sure, seeing it rise is going towards being complete, but "this is it"... this is the final look that the tower will have.

9 years later, and it was worth the wait :)

Using a tower crane to install the southeast corner panel. That's three corners up so far.

Photo By GreenwichBoy over at WNY.
http://wirednewyork.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=11418&d=1289766906

I think it well take a bit of time to get the first row up, they have to get it just right or the rest won't fit. Once they get to the 21st to 22nd floor installation should speed up.

Let's see, no leave outs on the south side, maybe 4 panels each left out on the east and west sides for the constrution elevators. That leaves the northwest corner, I expect they well take down some crane track soon so there well be no leave outs for it.

Now that the question of "when cladding will start" has been answered, the next question we should ask is when will the first set of office floor windows (towards the middle of the outer skin of the building) be installed? :jester: :)

Even The Shard has distortion in its glass. There's no way around it. But truly high quality glass shows distortion at very few angles, which seems to be the case here. The glass looks as even and mirror-like as any glass in the world when you're not looking at it head-on.

I think that they should have the office space go all the way to right under the observatory, it's hard to believe they really need that much mechanical space plus they would be able to have more room for potential tenants.

Definitely in their best interest.

Well, they have waited a long time for it. It'll take a few days to sink in. Personally I'm enjoying all of the photos, saved me the trip down there. But as someone else said, it's something you should see with your own eyes, so I'll check it out on my weekly journey. The next glass reveal will be the base, I'm interested in seeing how that plays out as compared to the rest of the tower. Then eventually, the final reveal will be the crown and the spire, which is still a little vague at this point, though we have a general idea.

It's also:
A) The exact center of transit in the city and region.
B) One of the few LEED Gold office spaces.
C) Has lower-than-market electricity rates because it piggy-backs on the PA's power deal.

On the downside, there is the history of the site. That's about the only thing working against it. Yet that hasn't been a problem for this building, the most likely to be targeted, nor Tower 7.

Good points. Once a few floors are covered in cladding and more rigorous development is seen in the east bathtub, we should see a large demand for space here

Seeing as how DCM is paying for the tower cranes and has "First Dibs" on there use (and DCM charges other companies $1,750 an hour to use them (It's actually $1,750 per lift based on an average time over the life of the job of 45 minutes per lift)) I would say that curtain wall installation well be second and or third shift. (The construction elevators are only $750 per lift.) Who knows, maybe Benson has a machine to install panels just like how the Twins skin was applied.

The WTC towers, when finished, well be the most modern prime office space in the city, not to mention some fine looking towers in a prime location. I would be shocked if all the towers were not fully leased by there opening dates.

Redoing the exterior. First time around I basically half-assed it, which is why you never really saw that many close-ups.

It's also:
A) The exact center of transit in the city and region.

Well, the towers centered around Penn Station (like 15 Penn and Manhattan West) would be around the center of transit in the city and region, but they're not under construction. The transit around the WTC site is among the best in the city though, when you take into account the Fulton Street transit center is connected. Still, it doesn't beat Penn Station. Grand Central is pretty much built out.

^Any negative there is from walking 3 blocks from Fulton, is made up for by walking just 1 block from PATH, and being within another block from a couple of largely residential areas.

Work continues. The base will look drastically better this time around, now that I know what everything is supposed to look like.

Pretty much done with the tower portion. Got to rehab the base (which will look really nice) and the antenna levels. In the meanwhile, I'm playing around with the vents. Here's small wire-mesh inserts in the glass. I'll do full-length mesh next time through, which is closest to what the renders show (they actually show 4-story tall holes in the facade, not sure if I buy that, but we'll figure that out in a year and a half).

I doubt anybody would find even 3 blocks a negative. The WTC site is now virtually tied into the Fulton St tansit center (check out the animation, the lower levels of the Freedom Tower are towards the end, or about 25 seconds in...)

nIUCwgCgV_Y

When its all open, sometime in 2014, you'll be able to walk all the way from the Fulton center all the way to the World Financial Center, and never step outside. But it's a pedestrian oriented city anyway. There are times of the day when you can watch and join the flow of people to or from the transit centers, like Penn Station, Grand Central, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, even the WTC PATH terminal. That's the good thing about it, basically everthing downtown is within walking distance of the WTC.

One World Trade Center’s Shining Facade Begins to Rise

November 15, 2010
By Julie Shapiro

The first stainless steel and sparkling glass panels for the facade on One World Trade Center began to rise this week and are already attracting attention from blocks away.

"It looks good," said Angela Medina, 20, a student who was visiting the site from New Jersey on Monday. "It’s going to look different from all the other buildings around. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing it when it’s done."

The tower won’t open until 2013, but workers installed the first pieces of the stainless steel exterior on three corners of the 20th floor on Sunday. They then began adding glass on Monday, said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority.

In all, the 1,776-foot skyscraper, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, will feature 12,000 glass panels, each of which is 5 feet wide and more than 13 feet tall.

The facade panels will form eight tall triangles of glass and steel, which grow alternately wider and narrower as they approach the top of the building. David M. Childs designed the tower’s glimmering exterior to refract light and change its appearance depending on the weather and the viewer’s position.

The first 20 floors of the building, which include the lobby and mechanical space, will have a more porous facade made of prismatic glass and an aluminum screen.

Construction workers at the World Trade Center site were said they were impressed by the first glimpse of the building’s future skin this week.

"Officially, I’m not allowed to have a comment," said one worker who is helping build One World Trade Center. "Unofficially, I think it looks sweet."

"You can start to see the scope of the building," another worker added. "You can see what it’s going to be."

Structural steel for the $3.2 billion tower has risen to the 48th floor and will continue going up at the rate of one floor per week, Coleman said. Soon, the facade will be following behind at the same rate, he said.

When the building is complete, it will stand tallest in the city.

Steven Carter, 58, a pedestrian manager who has been posted on Vesey Street near the site for the past two months, said Monday that the visible progress was encouraging.

"The way it’s going, it’s gonna look beautiful," said Carter, a Queens resident. "It’s gonna look fabulous."

Anna Wintour's New Office to be Very Well Protected

What's with all the good news coming out of the redevelopment of ground zero these days? High-profile tenants coming aboard, waterfalls turned on, facades going up on new buildings—after years of squabbling, these good vibes are just what the doctor ordered. And on cue, here's the Post's Steve Cuozzo to deliver the patient some bad news.

The latest concern down at the World Trade Center is what the NYPD has up its sleeve regarding security. The coppers are about to start getting serious about its proposed security measures, and there are fears that barricades, vehicle-screening turntables and closed streets will create a "war zone" and ruin any chance the new WTC has for being an open and thriving hub of activity. Clearly these people forget that there's a terrorist motel in the works just two blocks away! One source tells Cuozzo "there will definitely be some level of change to the open-street grid" under the NYPD's plan, but the details are still in their very early stages and other parties, like prospective 1 World Trade Center tenant Condé Nast, will be consulted. Phew, for a minute there we were worried that New Yorker and Vogue staffers wouldn't be briefed on matters of national security.

Yeah, the official renders just show giant holes in the facade. Literally, glass stops, the floor is open to the world. Which...is nothing I've ever seen on a building. I can see practical problems with random objects (like birds) even at that height. Plus, it just seems like an unnecessary safety hazard when someone has to go in and check the exhausts/intakes/whatever is up there.

Still messing around with the details (like the reflectivity of the glass, which I turned down in the 2nd wider-angle shot), but here's really, truely, actually what the base, and its mythical "prismatic glass", will look like.
