Great idea!!! I am pretty sure that they will consider it. It will help to eased the congestion. It is right choice. I bet they will take on Skyway instead of going on subway.

Just a stupid question, but...

Now that 1WTC will be soon complete and has a lot of space on its rooftop to install antennas and communication gears,... is it possible that they remove the antenna on the top of the Empire State Building?

The antenna on the ESB is really ugly... and it was not supposed to be there, according to the initial plans. And it feels like half of the ESB is a big antenna (because of the upper part that is thinner than the lower part).

The ESB makes from that antenna. It wouldn't make sense from a business perspective.

NO. Some stations will use it as a backup, and some stations may not move at all. It hasn't been decided yet who, if any, will move back to the WTC site.

I don't know, but I'll tell you what. That antenna was a life-saver in the months after 9/11, when the WTC's original communication mast was taken out.

Since they added LED lights to the ESB's mast, the nightly lighting scheme looks even better.

Definitely gives 1 WTC's spire lighting a run for its money...

Yeah, the ESB antenna doesn't really bother me. The LED lights are really a saving grace for the ESB's, One WTC's, and other antennas around the city.

No doubt One WTC's original spire would have looked better during the day, but could they have installed LEDs into the randome for the nightly light shows like they have without it?

There used to be a big stairwell/construction rig going all the way to the top until (someone more knowledgeable answer here). I think once the dirt & grime gets washed away, it should all look uniform.

They left a strip of 2 windows open for a few month during construction. When they filled it in, the existing windows had already been pretty dirty. You won't see it once they wash it.

Actually, believe it or not, there was a service elevator on each side at one point. They have barely done any cleaning of the windows which is why you see different varieties of dirtiness.

I was thinking about the lower Manhattan skyline in that particular photo. If 125 Greenwich is built, and something at the 55 Broad St site could be built to at least 1,200 ft, we'd have that classic skyline back.

The actual photo looks a lot better than the rendering actually! Also, just wait until the observatory is open as well and the building reaches higher occupancy. It will really be a sight to see from that same vantage point. Not to mention, the spire even looks a lot better.

This observatory will be very transparent (especially at night) and will be very easy for people throughout parts of the city to see the camera flashes and vibrancy throughout.

When I use Google Earth and check the 3D buildings in NYC, I see that it has not been updated for two years!...

1WTC is still under construction with no windows on the upper part, as well as 4WTC. And you can't see 432 Park Avenue because it doesn't exist yet.

As NYC's skyline has changed so much in two years, it would be nice Google updates the 3D buildings of NYC :(

I still want Bing Maps to also update the birdseye view for the city. It is woefully outdated. Likewise for Google Earth.

The photo is a lot sharper than the render, but yeah, they are close enough that at first i thought it was the rendering.

I'm not so sure about the flashes, there will be so much light coming from the building. I always went to the original deck in the daytime.

I thought i heard last year the verizon building might be in for a makeover.

Verizon was going to get a glass facade makeover in '09, but this was scrapped after the recession hit.

I agree with pretty much everyone else that' it's one of the ugliest buildings in NY. Removing Verizon sign or even a facade makeover might marginally improve its appearance, but I think it just needs to be demolished. But that won't happen.

Ongoing plans for the renovation of that building can be seen and discussed here...still in the works, though not the original plan.

I doubt Verizon would be cool with that. I just don't see it happening while there's a business need for it. Perhaps it'll go eventually, but I'm a cynic. Look at how long we've waited for Penn Station to get back some of its' former glory, and there's been a lot more demand for that.

Anyway, I wanted to reply to your question, but anything else we should discuss it in the thread NYGuy linked.

Technically defining the southern edge of midtown, the ESB has always felt a little separate from the bulk of midtown to me. 432 is nearly at the northern edge of midtown so there is quite a bit of distance separating them. Creates 3 peaks in the skyline.

Not only that, also at night the Empire State Building will still make the biggest impact with it's new radiant LED lighting now extending all the way up to the 1,454 foot peak. :)

Not really, with towes like Nordstrom and 1 Vanderbilt. Even 30 Hudson will shine brightly at night. But what the ESB currently has is distance from any of those developing sites. If 15 Penn gets built, throw that out. It's the same thing with the Freedom Tower. Dominant now, but a lot less when 125 Greenwich or even 2 WTC gets built.

Sources: 1 World Trade Center to open within weeks

By Ryan Hutchins
Oct. 3, 2014

One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the crowning achievement of the Lower Manhattan rebuilding effort, is expected to open within the next month, according to four people familiar with the matter.

Two sources said officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Durst Organization, the building’s owners, are looking at October 27 as a target date, but they have not finalized their plans.

A spokesman for Durst, without elaborating, said an exact day has not been solidified.

But the timeframe is far more specific than previous ones, which put the opening at any point within the fourth quarter. The skyscraper’s anchor tenant, Condé Nast Publications, has said it will move its employees into its new 24 floors of space in November.

The opening, which is likely to draw the city and state’s top leaders, will punctuate an emotional, politically fraught and arduous 13-year endeavor to complete the skyscraper.

The visibility in that first picture is amazing. Also, on a side note, we can see LIC pretty clearly, and this view will give us a good idea of the potential for the area. With all of the towers going up and planned within the area, that area will look dramatically different. Almost like DoBro, only denser assuming most of the developments get built. Its like an extension of Midtown East in a way. From the observation deck, once it opens, it will be a treat to see all of these skyline clusters/downtowns. 99 Church street is also rising gracefully. Thinner than I thought from this view or maybe its just overpowered by all of the bulky towers in its proximity.

I just want to point out that at 1,368 ft and currently tallest to roof height in the city, the Freedom tower is on pace to drop to 4th or 5th. With 432 Park at 1396 ft, Nordstrom at (minimum) 1,490 ft, 111 W. 57th at possibly 1397-1,400 ft, and now 1 Vanderbilt with top off (minus spire) at 1,396 ft. It dodged a bullet with the planned 125 Greenwich at 1,356 ft. It's getting very crowded at the top. But that tacky looking spire is the one thing keeping it at the top of the rankings.

yeah i feel like extell is going to build nordstrom with that spire and do what trump did in chicago and re-measure the total height of the building and end up putting it ahead of 1 wtc.or maybe just file for two feet taller xD

18. Clearly, this is an entrance. Yet the CTBUH and SOM were up to shenanigans to certify this building at 1,776 ft, and so it is. (Until you take a photo from the northern side...

Thanks for the pics and captions, especially the ones describing the height difference between the north and west entrances at WTC1. Also I like the signage, is it similar to the old WTC?

Great pics NYguy:)

I don't recall signage from the old WTC, there were markers. But I didn't really look for any, it was just the World Trade Center.

This new signage reminds me more of the BofA tower...

I took this just now as the low clouds roll over lower manhattan. I wish I had this view before they turned the spire off at midnight but the cloud deck was completely opaque until recently.
