I understand the communications ring in this picture does not show the white dishes on it but has the steel ring been redesigned to.

antenna or spire, both are sticks thrown on top so let's just end that conversation here. Nice rendering, where's it from? Looks much better than those Miller-Hare renders.

It IS from Miller Hare.

I'm very curious and skeptical to see how the antenna and base cladding will look on this tower.

Why hasn't the base been squared off yet?

This shot is the 1st one that i have seen that shows the cooling towers that have been installed on the roof behind the parapet and also at the center of the steel deck above you can see the circular area for the antenna i believe. It is amazing how large some of those steel beams are over 1400' up.

Quebec-built antenna to top World Trade Center in New York City

By Alan Woods
November 10, 2012

TERREBONNE, QC—The 137-metre crown of the rebuilt World Trade Center is about to embark on a muted farewell tour of the province in which it was built.

Starting on Nov. 15 at the Port of Valleyfield, west of Montreal near the Quebec-Ontario border, nine hulking sections of an 18-piece antenna will be crane-loaded onto a barge. What follows will be a two-week voyage up the St. Lawrence River, past Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Quebec City and Rimouski. After a quick loop around the Gaspé and the northern coast of the remote Magdalen Islands the fruits of five years of precision cutting, drilling and fusing by the good men of Groupe ADF will push out into open waters.
Destination? New York City. The St. Lawrence Seaway closes to traffic in December, meaning that there remains just a small window of time to get the antenna loaded onto the barge and shipped to Manhattan where it is set to be installed in January. And just like the space shuttle Endeavour, which was drive 20 kilometres through the streets of Los Angeles on its way to the California Science Museum earlier this month, the Canadian-built antenna will also be a slow-motion spectacle when it is trucked piece-by-piece from the barge in the New York harbour to its new home around the start of December. A crane will unload the nine sections that have been sent by sea and load them onto trucks that will drive down Greenwich Street to the World Trade Center site. There, they will be reunited with eight smaller sections that are being driven down from Canada as well as the tip of the antenna, which has already been delivered.

Quebec-built antenna to top World Trade Center in New York City

November 10, 2012

Wow, this antenna will be 17 sections all together! This will be most famous antenna ever and possibly the most technological, with all the high-definition microwaves and LED's on it. I wonder if they already made the radome? Maybe they can make it feasible to maintain the radome in the future, hopefully; after all it was part of the master plan & final design.

In other good news, earthcam is back up, finally.:notacrook::cheers::cool:

Ok, we're messing things up here. First off, it's not an antenna, the word you're looking at is mast. Where in the world have you seen a 400ton antenna? Use the correct term, please.

Second, the radome is nothing but the fiberglass enclosure that was originally planned to cover the whole tower mast.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6709801577_fb87d9868e_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/62018165@N04/6709801577/)

What makes the crown at the base of the mast is called the Communications Platform Ring, and yes eventually it will be filled up with microwave drums and satellite-like dishes. As opposed to recent comments, this section wasn't re-engineered at all. All new renderings depict how will the top look in the short term, give it a couple of years and you'll have all the radio stuff mounted on.

That's the plan, but with the fiber buildout in recent years and spectrum reallocations, the microwave link business hasn't exactly been booming. And the size of those enclosures in the old conceptions made me wonder if they weren't enclosures for all kinds of different antenna systems and not one giant dish. There's pretty much no possibility they're going to have a nice, evenly spaced and pointed ring of dishes like the drawings show. That last picture is likely to be a lot closer to the appearance than the early ones. Uneven antenna placement will be a lot less noticeable in that design.
I gave up trying to explain what an antenna was a while back. When you have halfwits like one of the "experts" in this forum stating that they're dangerous because they they emit radiation as a byproduct, and half the people in the room believe him, it's pretty much a lost cause.

That may be true, but they are generally referred to as antennas. From the Conde Nast, to Sears, even to the original tower, its commonly called an antenna. The man on the street won't get too technical about it.

But whatever you call it, that won't change they way it will appear on the building, which would look so much better without it.

Video footage recorded in the hours before Superstorm Sandy hit downtown Manhattan has revealed an errie sound created by the strong winds whistling through the unfinished tower. The storm, which included gusts of 80mph, briefly turned the tower in an enormous concrete version of an æolian harp, a musical instrument played by the wind. The footage has been viewed more than 30,000 times on YouTube, where comments are divided between those who found the sound to be unearthly and a creepy foreboding of the disaster to come and those who think the high pitched noise has a certain tranquility and beauty to it.

i disagree, the antenna completes the tower. It wouldn't fit in at New York without a pinnacle. The cladding is nice but imo the flat top with the tapering would be look terrible and out of place in lower Manhattan without something to go on top.

its my opinion, but this... i don't like.

The design has had major changes in the last year. And even after it's basic structure is up, the appearance can be greatly altered without changing the basic structure. Hopefully, when they start adding antennas to the mast appearance will be a consideration and they won't garbage it up like they did with the ESB.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Only one of the original towers had an antenna on top, and the other tower didn't look "incomplete" without it. It they want to revive the spire idea, then I could see that as an extension of the design. I didn't see that with the original complex, and I won't see it with what they have planned now.

That may be true, but they are generally referred to as antennas. From the Conde Nast, to Sears, even to the original tower, its commonly called an antenna. The man on the street won't get too technical about it.

But whatever you call it, that won't change they way it will appear on the building, which would look so much better without it.

Antenna and mast are the same things at the beginning but mast is like the KVLY-TV mast and an antenna is on a building

I can't help but wonder if Durst doesn't want to put a spire because Conde Nast's antenna has been manipulated at night to look rather good. perhaps the new lighting there made for an argument for why a spire isn't needed here...?

Not at all. Different buildings. Durst has said the lighting of all three buildings (including the BofA) will play off of each other. But anything can be lit. This has to do with the overall look of the building - day and night - and what the spire was supposed to represent. Let us not forget that this is no ordinary development, and there was only one reason why a spire was included in the first place. (Had David Childs had his way, there would be no spire at all). Sure, you can put an antenna on top of any building, and it will be acceptable, but again, this isn't any building.

Omaha's Ballantyne to provide One World Trade Center beacons

By Barbara Soderlin
November 10, 2012

Omaha's Ballantyne Strong designed and is producing the high-powered LED lights that will shine from atop New York City's One World Trade Center when the building opens in 2014. The twin beams will revolve horizontally, like a beacon from a lighthouse, 1,776 feet above the city, the company said. They are intended to symbolize resilience, democracy and freedom by illuminating the skies above where the World Trade Center's twin towers were destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.

The light will be visible in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, said Jordan Barowitz, director of external affairs for the Durst Organization, which is developing the property with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He said the tower and lights will be “the most noticeable architectural expression on New York's skyline.”

Ballantyne announced Friday that its Strong Entertainment Lighting division won a contract to provide the beacons on top of the building's 408-foot antenna, and the lighting that will illuminate the antenna tower itself in colors that can be changed to celebrate holidays and events. “With the tragedy at the World Trade Center, to be awarded something that's going to be so visible not only in the United States but around the world, it's tremendous for our company and for Nebraska,” said Chris Stark, Ballantyne's senior vice president and chief operating officer.

Counting its antenna tower, the One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in North America; not counting it, that distinction still belongs to Chicago's Willis Tower, formerly called the Sears Tower. Even without the 408-foot antenna tower, at 1,368 feet, the building will be more than twice as tall as Nebraska's tallest building, the 634-foot One First National Center.

Stark said the LED technology behind the lights was originally manufactured in Omaha, and manufacture of the light assemblies already has begun at several U.S. facilities. The pieces will be delivered late this year and early next year according to the builders' regimented time frame. While Strong employees won't be installing the lights — that requires people qualified to work at great heights — the company will be performing some preliminary assembly on the ground level.

The beacon assembly will include 264 LED lights, each within a “reflector module” that magnifies its brightness. The building is being designed to the LEED Gold standard of environmental efficiency, and Stark said use of the LED lighting will complement that. A rotating mirror will send the light revolving out from the antenna tower.

“It's a one-of-a-kind, unique application of our LED technology,” Stark said.

If only it were still lighting the spire. That at least answers the question on whether the lighting will be horizontal or vertical. From some of the earlier videos, it will be capable of both.

I think I like the idea of horizontal illumination more since it suggests the building is bathing the area (New York, America, American soil) in the light and covering (protecting it?) It just seems more dynamic than a simple light shooting straight up into the sky. I don't know, I'll have reserve judgement until later, but we've already seen vertical beacons, but there are few horizontal ones. I think the building should go for more originality since that's what America has always been about.

And that last rendering with the light shooting up in the sky makes the building look like a light saber.

Just thought this be a nice update: From wtc.com

Under the Port Authority's supervision, tower steel has topped out at the 105th floor with the fitting of the glass curtain wall above the 88th floor and concrete floors poured above the 104th floor. Core shear walls topped out in October 2012 with the final concrete placement extending walls to the 104th floor mezzanine. The elevator landings, stairs and related structural elements is now completed to the 102nd floor mezzanine. All trusses for the east lobby escalators are set in position and the installation of escalators 1-7 are in progress at the east lobby areas between the B2 and ground floor levels. The installation of the 408-foot-tall telecommunications spire is expected to begin in late November 2012 and reach its full height, 1776 feet, in March 2013.

Spire Will Travel to Trade Center Tower Next Month Through Tribeca

http://www.tribecatrib.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/standaloneslideshow/spire-combo.jpg

Detail of diagram, shown to Community Board 1 on Nov. 14, illustrates the bottom nine sections of the 1 World Trade Center spire
that are scheduled to arrive by barge next month at Pier 25 from their factory in Canada.

By Carl Glassman

The lower nine of 18 sections of the 408-foot-high antenna structure are expected to arrive by barge at Tribeca's Pier 25 within the next few weeks. Each of the giant sections, up to 24 feet long and 20 feet in diameter, will be lifted by derrick crane onto a truck, then make a slow, nocturnal journey to 1 World Trade Center. It will travel one block up West Street to North Moore, east a block to Greenwich and down to the north side of 1 WTC, which has reached its full, spireless height. The first section could make the trip as early as Dec. 5, Brian Hegarty, the Port Authority's director of the 1 World Trade Center project, told Community Board 1's Tribeca Committee on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The pieces are so large that electricians in bucket trucks, traveling in front of and behind the spire section, will move traffic light poles out of the way, then swing them back into place after the spire-toting truck has passed. "You will see a very interesting train for this," Hegarty said.

The process for each section, beginning with the derrick operation, is expected to begin around 10:30 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. and could take place any day of the week, including weekends, Hegarty said. The pieces are so large, according to Hegarty, they could not travel directly down West Street because two pedestrian bridges stand in their way.

The size of the structures also prevents more than two sections at a time to be stored at the base of the building as they wait to be lifted into place. And because that hoisting is weather dependent, it is not certain how long it will take before all the sections can be off-loaded from their barge at Pier 25.

The whole process could take up to seven months, said Glenn Guzy, a Port Authority program director. No mention was made of the upper nine sections of the antenna. "The overall goal is to move a piece or two a week," Guzy said.

The spire became a center of controversy earlier this year when developer Douglas Durst, who has a $100 million stake in 1 World Trade Center, announced that the antenna would shed its ornamental casing, a savings of $20 million, he said. Critics questioned whether the unsheathed antenna should still count towards the building's 1,776-foot height, making it the tallest tower in North America.

And that last rendering with the light shooting up in the sky makes the building look like a light saber.

it better hum and buzz when it goes into light saber mode -- oh, and play the cantina music when you walk into the lobby!

I'm thinking they're going to erect the bottom third of the spire, place all the guys and use the spire itself for crane bracing to raise them to ludicrous height for finishing the job.

No, I thought so too, but IrishInNYC posted non-confidential pictures from the official rigging plan. A TG-1900 with a HUGE custom tower will rest on top of the platform and the base sections may be custom made to allow a higher maximum unbraced height.

view point is south looking north at the tower.

But to where?

Probably more temporary structure for ring/antenna erection would be my guess.

Has there been any "real" noticable progress on the site since Sandy? Or are they mostly doing concrete right now?

Rigging like that picture isn't even remotely possible. That crane tower has to either go through the base or be braced part way up.

There'll be plenty of gorgeous sunsets when the whole complex is completed. I can't wait.
