This tower is the center of the USA skyscraper scene.

Na, I think 432 park ave is. 1WTC is a rebirth of an old icon (quite rightly), but 432 is a step up, and will become much more talked about, and iconic I believe, in the great NYC tradition of not just high, but ground breaking architecture.

Wow....I can't get over the amount of whining on here regarding the base and the spire.
And, while I understand the disappointment....and the right to gripe about it....it just seems rather juvenile. Personally...I would've preferred the radome covering for the spire...but Durst made millions by scrapping it and being able to make money trumped aesthetics.
I think it will look good....not as good as planned...but not as bad as some on here make it out.
Oh, and it WILL be counted towards the final building height. As I had posted on here previously, the fact that it is integrated with the building's construction...and the fact that it is a cable stayed mast...WILL have it included in the official height.
I feel similarly about the base. It is turning out better than I had anticipated. Again...I would've preferred the chamfered corners...it was a nice architectural touch....but the reasoning behind the change has been discussed over and over. Once it...and the mast....are completed and illuminated, I think they will look just fine.
I think it is important to realize that 1WTC was not meant to stand alone as a solitary structure. This entire site will be so much more impressive when 2WTC & 3WTC fill the space between towers 1 & 4.
I think I will just sit back and wait for the entire complex to be finished before rendering a final judgment.
You want to bitch about me bitching about your bitching? Fire away.
Your opinion doesn't matter to me anyway....just like mine won't change yours.

Ha! You're so passionate about that bland building. 1 WTC in it's cheaper version is still a much better skyscraper on all levels. If you think the average person is ignorant to what's going on at the WTC ask them if they've heard of 432 Park and just wait for the blank stare. Heck, One57 was a major story during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and people still couldn't tell you it's name from a photo. 1 WTC may not be groundbreaking but it's definitely everything you said that you think 432 is. There is no denying 1 WTC's when it comes to being an icon. And we're still only in the beginning.

Both use 12 or 14,000 PSI concrete. The strongest ever used in 1000'+ tall buildings anywhere.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do live in New York. I live in Staten Island and I can't see the spire near my job or where I live. My job is like 7 to 8 miles in a straight line away from the WTC. My house is about 10 to 12 miles in a straight line. I use to see the Twin Towers perfectly along with the antenna atop the North Tower. I can see One WTC from my house and my job but not the spire. Heck I can't even see the cranes sometimes and I have 20/20 vision. I don't know what else to tell you. Are you sure you aren't talking about the cranes because they even block the view of the spire right now. I guess we won't know what real impact it will make until the cranes come down. Well yeah there is nothing you and me can do about it to change the decision Durst made but there is nothing wrong with expressing an opinion on it. Trust me you'll be hearing negative views for a very long time so you best better get used to that. We live in a very opinionated world so people are always going to have to something to say. The spire is ok without the radome enclosure but it was a stupid move by Durst. If you want to like the spire be my guest that's your right. I'm just glad something is being built there at all you know.

I was in Shore Acres the other day ,and i saw 1 wtc mast just fine and i was also in Alice Austen park not to long ago and saw 1 wtc mast just fine , don't know about you ? because if you cant see it please don't state that it is not visible to others.

I agree with you 100% Otie. The biggest complaint I have with some of the comments on here is that they're judging an unfinished, under construction tower. I'm all for having an opinion but to say it looks ugly before it's even finished just doesn't make sense to me. Wait and see the finished product and then you can say whether you like it or not. And you cant judge it from a rendering either. I think the fins will look awesome once they're opened up. And I believe the spire will look great once it's finished. You seem to have some insight into the tower. Have you heard if they plan on painting the spire once it's finished?

Shore Acres and Alice Austen Park are close to the water so it would make sense for you to see the Tower. However, the cranes still block the view of that thin mast so I highly doubt you saw the mast. I'm over there a lot and I never see the mast even on a clear day. Perhaps it was the cranes. My job is actually closer to the ferry and I cannot see the mast. Don't state it isn't visible because I can't see it? This is an open forum pal I can say what I please and if you don't like it, please don't respond, it's as simple as that. How about I just tell you "Don't say you can see it in rain, sleet, and snow" because we both know you can't (visibility sucks on days like that), especially from Sea Gate or Coney Island unless you have X-Ray or Microscopic Vision. That's more misleading than what I have said if you ask me. Like I said, I'm just glad something is being built there. I could care less about the mast at this point in time. It's old news, there's nothing we can do to change it but it's still ok to express an opinion on it.

Is the plan still for the top steel linings to be thicker than the vertical ones? I remember they were in older renderings - it helped to make the vertical linings seem less sinewy and gave the building more bulk.

Whenever I'm up close to this building in person, it just feels so weird--it almost looks like it's CGI, or some kind of extra-dimensional monolith. It's like a supermodel that isn't very photogenic, but still manages to look decent in photographs due to overwhelming beauty. Pictures really don't do this building justice, though. I literally can't believe I'm looking at a real-world object when I see the new 1WTC with my own eyes.

WHOA! I'm headed back in 20 days now. At this rate the glass is going, it's gonna be pretty much finished by the time I get there :D

EDIT: I went to Earthcam and zoomed in on that same view. They have 1 floor left in that vertical gap on the west end. YEAH!!!! The New Jersey view will finally look like the north/south views :)

I noticed in this rendering of the mast, that some of the top sections have a more aesthetically-pleasing white covering over them. It is somewhat reminiscent of the North Tower's antenna. Are they actually gonna implement that? If so, that will be a very good thing!

Umm, that is broadcast equipment. That will be added and pointed in the directions that the broadcasters desire. The watchmacallits were never an architectural element like some people seem to believe.

umm thanks yeah so is the mast fyi.

i was just noticing they were present in the older render, but not in the newer. its as much of a minor mystery as the white sections of the mast. maybe someone who knows something about it can explain.

So correct me if i'm wrong,, 1 more "single spire" piece, then the finale the "double with the rocket beacon? Correct? So that erected was piece 314? next will be 315, which is laying on roof, then the double, longer rocket/slash long spire piece already connected, that's still on street. Is that accurate. Oh by the way sweet close ups Hunser!!! Current height is actually 1 foot less than Taipei 101? Incredible..

Great work NYCrulz, you're becoming a top seed around here, I just wanna ask you why do they apply this spire in such an unorthodox way, seemed like 314 was laying on the roof a week or 2 ago, they pull up 315,(lay that on the roof?) from street (I beleive),, did they lay that piece #315, down on the roof, and assemble 314, or was that the last and final normal part, before the double, or was today's the last section, and they added that right away, and if that's, the last piece before the double piece, or maybe they constructed 315 and maybe 314 is still on the roof to me,, I'm dumbfounded, I thought there was another single piece to have set,, is it possibe they lifted (THE FINAL) #315 2 weeks ago, set it down on the roof. Then constructed spire # 314 today and applied it?? Anybody have any explanations.. I'm quite confused because I though there were "now" 3 pieces left, 1 normal size, then the double top-off? Help needed.. Sorry so confusing, bottom line is there 1 more than the double? Equalling 3 more pieces, we all know the top and it's under piece are connected, so I'm calling it double.

There is still one more single piece before the double section. I'm not sure if they have hoisted it to the roof yet or not. I would probably say since it's such a large piece that it is probably still on the ground.

I can't get over how ugly the antenna is turning out. Wow. At least Conde's 'ornament' revels in its ugliness; this just happens to be a total afterthought.

Also, the Brooklyn boom is evident in the last photo, and activity is going to increase dramatically by the end of this year. Between each of New York's individual skylines, DoBro will see the most overall change--unless you count the Hudson Yards as a new skyline separate from Midtown.

It was hoisted yesterday to roof and we call the piece put up yesterday 315, the one on dog house 316, and the final pair 317/318. 316 needs a crane jump before it goes up and then final pair

Blaze23
Apr 21, 2013, 4:00 PM
Don't forget LIC; midtown and downtown will also change drastically in the next few years so I would say NYC's skyline as a whole will change quite a lot in the next decade.
Back to this tower, as much as I hate the spire/antenna, it's actually more visible than I thought, driving from the west side highway and even from Bensonhurst in Brooklyn you can clearly see it. Can't wait to see the whole thing finished so I can make a final judgement.

Agreed. Conde's charm is that it looks like a Frankenstein pieced together out of random bits of other scrapers, so its antenna suits it. 1WTC is sleek and shiny for 1,373 feet and then suddenly becomes the exact opposite, which is jarring.

A little old, but some pictures I took while I was in NYC on April 4th. I'm just getting around to posting them. I haven't gotten down from Boston to take pictures in NYC in about 3 years. I have been following the progress on here, but it was great to see it in person:

Is it me or am I the only one who thinks the mast/spire is to tall?

It's not even completed and it looks way to tall.
