There's quite an eerie similarity between Calatrava's new concourse arches and the Mexico WTC... Think it's on purpose?

Because Calatrava is overrated and not all of his designs are original from one another?

Nice to see the memorial take shape next to the FT. I kept waiting for steel to rise around the footprints till recently it hit me that it's the one place where it won't be rising. Common sense thould've told me earlier than when you build voids, you create them by building everything around them but not the voids themselves.

Yeah, and it also dries. "Curing" and "drying," while technically distinct phenomena, happen simultaneously. Maybe we'll throw in "set" just to spice things up.

Ever wonder why they call them "drying shrinkage cracks?"

Its becoming easier to visualize how everything will work together now that ground level has been reached in places. You can see the northern outline of the memorial falls, and the underground passageway separating the memorial from the Freedom Tower. The passageway and the memorial better defines the Freedom Tower's footprint, now I can't wait for some horizontal steel to be attached to the core and for the north core to catch up.

Those don't really bother me as much as the facade changes after the second setback of each tower. In fact, I quite like the copper, and I especially like that they (although perhaps clumsily) tied together the WTC site with the river via public space (the large atrium and retail space) rather than closing it off to just office tenants.

They fixed and upgraded it alot after 9/11. I still would not be surprised if they decided to reclad it to bring it up to date
With the glassy NWTC, sure hope not. But that's for another thread.

So you guys out there, What exactly is the "Wedge of light"? It's in all the plans, up the road between 2NWTC and the hub, and it seems very important as it seems to dictate 2wtcs shape. Just wondering.

I helped out with communications in the early days of that time. It still seems surreal. It will mean much to me to stand in that memorial one day and look up at the tower this thread is about. The end of a long dream. Despite the all knowing critics disdain of the two towers, they were my favorites ever since I lived on Governor's Island and saw them every day. I'm very much looking forward to their replacements, and hoping to stare up at them and say "Yep. They'll do"

Both will be dwarfed by what is to come. I think the awareness of the scale of the original WTC has been lost on some, but the combined effect of 3 supertalls (and a couple of 900 footers) in that short space will be more dramatic than what was there before.

There is indeed progress on the site. Each time I come on here it looks like the site has made no progress whatsoever. It looks like the core hasnt risen but a few meters or so in the past month, but there has been a lot of changes everywhere else.

The ramp is completely down now. And they're building something on top of that building in the center. I don't know if it's something temporary, like a crane platform or something permanent.

Those photos show how small the Freedom Tower's footprint is in context of everything else around it. With monsters like Goldman Sachs or the WFC around it'll look anorexic.

The freedom tower footprint is 200×200 feet ( 60×60 m ) so it's bigger than 7 WTC and around the same as WFC towers. The Goldman sachs tower upper floors around 150×240 feet. It may look like small now, but wait couple months !

In fact, the Freedom Tower has a very small base compared to the other WTC towers...

There's always progress on site, regardless of what you see above street level. Most impressive is the memorial, where they are now
predicting an earlier completion.

I believe the original WTC towers to be 208 X 208.

Yes. It should be a little smaller than 200 X 200 feet because of the outward rising notches that were added. The tower footprint on the memorial was supposed to be 208 X 208 but were made smaller for logistical reasons. But whats a couple of feet? For all extensive purposes the Freedom Tower will be the same size as the North Tower and the memorial will mark the footprints. As far as the progress I would wager the bitterly cold weather has something to do with the frequency of concrete pours. What I really want to see though is steel!

The steel for the memorial is flying. It won't be long before the entire west side of the site is at street level.

They expect to have all of the steel for the memorial in place before the end of the year. At the pace they're going, I could see that being done easily.

I hope someone out there is doing a time lapse of this project from the very beginning to the end of it. That would be the most awesome timelapse ever!
