I was having a difficult time figuring out from what angle this photo was taken. I finally realized it when I saw the cranes for 3wtc sticking out in the lower rh part of the photo. Normally - I'm use to seeing 5wtc in the foreground of 4wtc when the shot is taken from the south of wtc complex. interesting angle...

Man does 7wtc look small in this photo...

I'm guessing that those cranes are now,at the least, in the same level of the Sears Tower height-wise. Hopefully, this is the starting point of many of NYC's future tallest to succeed. If Chicago doesn't come up with something soon, we always got Manhattan.

I'm working on a model of the base... but I made a bit of a stupid mistake when I made the steel last year.:duh: I used the steel that will support the base cladding for scale when I modeled the steel, knowing the elevation of the 20th and 1st floor. It turns out that I used a 13'9 1/2 spacing instead of the actual 13'4. Sounds like no biggie, but I'll have to adjust all of the angles in the base steel now, and the four sides aren't the same below the 20th floor.

See the top of the red support structures for the cranes. They are near 1400' up now. The tops of the cranes extended are near the mid 1600s

5 world trade center isn't built. The only towers being built at the moment is Tower 1 and 4. Tower 2 and 3 are going on hold, and no plans for tower 5.

Fun fact from Madagascar 3:
The Manhattan skyline originally didn’t have the new World Trade Center—a DreamWorker from New York City who had just been down to that area was awestruck by the partially completed building and asked that it be put in to show the amazing architecture.

Ummm 5 wtc?

To clearify my point - here's a photo taken, for the most part, from the same angle as the above photo. Both shots are taken from a camera facing north from the southern part of the complex. You can clearly see the difference in angle and the change in the site.
I'm use to seeing the pic taken with the empty lot where the bank once stood. The above pic is taken further back behind buildings to the south. The pic below was probably taken from the slinder white building in the above pic. The newer photo kinda distorts the depth and scale of the buidings.
Not to bring Five WTC into this page, but there's a pit there now. Not sure if it's been fill yet.

Freedom Tower

Alfred Huang was the original member of the World Trade center design team responsible for the project’s early responses to the masterplan as well as all public areas of the project, including below-grade retail, lobbies, exterior plazas and landscaping, observation deck and restaurant lobbies. He also pioneered the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for project design and delivery. The project challenged the design software of the time. Many challenges and lessons from the project informed the development of BIM software tool for large-scale projects.

The new World Trade Center Freedom Tower was designed to be the most important symbol of New York City, the 1,776 foot-tall (540 meters) as it strives to restore the skyline and draw inspiration from the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge and the sweeping twist fo the Statue of Liberty.

The design calls for 70 commerical stories with 2.6 million square feet (241,500 square meters) of office space with underground connection to retail and regional transit hubs. Above the offices is a broadcasting center, observation deck, and restaurant. Glass ceilings of the restaurant will look up at 400 feet (122 meters) of weaving cable-net superstructure housing wind turbines that will generate 20% of the building’s electricity. A 276-foot (85 meters) spire will top off the tower as a beacon of the city. The tower’s structural diagrid extends down the asymmetrical form, generating the weaving diamond-shaped curtain walls that clad the twisting east and west facades. At the base, the diagrids form a monumental arcade around the glazed cable-net lobby as it opens to the street.

Alfred Huang designed the project from 2003 to 2005 while employed with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP.

I wish they could implement a part of this design into the base. It would make it even more reminiscent of the tridents of the Twins, thus replacing what was there. Hopefully this design is used in another future NYC building.

PMadFlyer
Aug 26, 2012, 10:05 PM
:previous: No, with the exception of the glass "fins" it will be flat with the regular office window cladding. The black netting is over scaffolding like the black netting near the top of the tower. There is enough space between the scaffolding and the structure to install the panels. They might be using tarps to protect sensitive parts of the LED back-lighting system, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Also, if you didn't want to talk about the Libeskind/Childs design, you probably should not have block quoted ALL of the renders.

LOL, or even responded to it. I think the design for that base was better than anything we have now.

With the risk of sounding like a dumb troll.....can anyone point me to a page in this 1340 page long thread about how they actually jump the cranes, I looked for 2 days over lunch to find out how they do it and cannot find it, honest!

NewYorkDominates

:previous:

Perched above New York City’s skyline, two tower cranes are piecing together the new One World Trade Center, which just became the city’s tallest skyscraper. How do those cranes get up there?

By using their own hoisting power to make themselves taller. While that’s the most common method, there are actually three ways: 1) the external climbing method, in which the crane—the arm plus its tower—expands upward along the outside of the building, 2) the internal climbing method, in which the crane builds a few floors at a time from the inside and then “jumps” to a higher spot, and 3) the “skycrane” method of airlifting in a crane on a helicopter. (Engineers at 1 WTC are using both of the first two methods.)

In the external climbing method, the base of the crane is fixed in a concrete slab in the ground, and the crane tower is erected beside the building using smaller, mobile cranes. Once the building is about 180 feet tall (some 15 stories), the crane is fastened to the building with steel collars, and new segments are inserted into the crane’s backbone. To add segments to itself, the crane has a special climbing section—a big metal sheath that scales the outside of the crane tower. This sheath raises the arm above the last vertebra and temporarily supports it, then takes in a new tower segment from the arm. The sheath holds that segment in place while workers bolt it in. They repeat this process every 180 feet or so: The crane constructs the building, then it’s fastened to the building, then it receives new vertebrae to grow taller.

The second way is the internal climbing method. The crane stands inside the center of the building, in a kind of makeshift courtyard, where it constructs the skyscraper around itself about a hundred feet at a time. A hydraulic cylinder at the crane’s base elevates it through the hollow middle of the building to a higher floor. Then workers slide steel beams underneath the crane to give it a sturdy new footing, and the crane begins building again.

The third method is to have a heavy-lift helicopter (or “skycrane”) fly the crane to the top of the construction site. This must be done piece by piece—just a single segment of a crane’s tower can weigh between 3,000 and 20,000 pounds. However, because of the cost, and because flying a load-bearing helicopter over a populated area is logistically very difficult, this method is the most rare, used only a few times a year nationwide.

Bonus Explainer: How do cranes get back down? Often by constructing the very gallows that will destroy them. To disassemble themselves, tower cranes construct derricks on the rooftop of the finished project. (Derricks are tower cranes’ simpler great-granddaddy.) These derricks then help dismantle the tower cranes, and—in the case of internal climbers—lower their parts one by one to the ground using extremely long cables. Once the parts reach the ground, they’re taken back to the rental service on flatbed trucks, then the workers take apart the derricks. Most of the derricks’ parts can just take the construction elevator. (External climbers, however, can jack themselves all the way back down.)

Based on this info:

85-88= Septmeber
89-92= October
93-96= November
97-100= December

Both Tower 7 and Goldman Sachs are nearly 200 feet taller than original 7 WTC. That is part of the reason that the new Tower One appears shorter than the twins.

^I think he means 7WTC makes a better mark with 1WTC than the old 7WTC did with the Twins.I do agree on that part.On cloudy days especially,is when both the WTC and WFC look awesome, and very much look like if they were all meant to be together.

Yes, and that makes perfect sense given the increase in height over the old tower.

^That's why Lower Manhattan>Midtown Manhattan

Wall Street>42nd St.>57th St.>6th Avenue

Better in what way? There is nothing on Wall Street and it's small. All those streets listed above are better and livelier.

Do you mean aesthetically? If so, no. In Midtown, 5th Avenue is far more beautiful than Wall Street (or any of those other streets).

The tapering effect of this building is so prominent now. Was driving into Manhattan from JFK and the building looks so tapered and nice from afar.

Is that as high as the cranes will go? They still don't look nearly tall enough to handle the mast unless they're going to use some sort of top down construction like the Burj Dubai did and jack it up as they assemble it.
