Someone should superimpose the beekman tower on to a pic of the old twin tower skyline and see how much dominance the beekman would take away.

Actually even though the roof is a bit higher in the rendering I did on paint One World Trade Center would be higher than the Beekman.

Not much, trust me. They were not on the northern tip of the WTC site, and thus were in the 'middle' of the LM skyline (from BK Bridge). The Beekman would be far in the silhouette from the Twins. BUT the Beekman will dominate the new 1 WTC from the Brooklyn Bridge.

I have a theory about why the glass installation has paused.

Wind loads increase with height, and the floors with glass installed obviously catch the wind more than the floors that are still open steel frame. So therefore, isn't it true that the higher the glass goes, the more sway there will be on the uppermost floors where the ironworkers are installing new steel? And isn't it logical that they consequently would have paused the glass for a while, in order to provide an additional safety factor for the ironworkers until the steel is finished on the uppermost floors?

If this is true, we might not see any new glass at all until after topping out. Maybe Alan88 would know?

It could happen 1 wtc pinnacle height is speculated to be between 1787 to 1792 so one could hope they will add 9 more feet to the lighting rod. :):):)

One World Trade Center Reaches 100 Stories, But It’s Missing A Few Floors

http://www.observer.com/files/2012/03/wtc-600x400.jpg

By Kim Velsey 3/30

One World Trade Center has finally reached 100 stories! Kind of. It turns out that 100 is kind of a flimsy number since some of the floors don’t even exist, The Wall Street Journal reports.

While the top of the tower’s steel frame is currently at the 100th floor, Tishman spokesman John Gallagher confirmed in an email, the tower was only at 93 stories just a few weeks ago. The tower is rising really, really fast—an average of 9.5 feet a week— but not 7 stories in 2 weeks fast.

So what happened? Basically, floors 94 through 99 don’t exist.

“It is fairly common practice in the design of high-rise towers to see variable floors counts,” a spokesman for the Port Authority told The Journal.

The tower, which is now 1,240 feet above the ground, will eventually reach 104 stories (1,368 feet). It will soon be taller than the Empire State building (1,250), but such skyline dominance may be short-lived with residential tower 432 Park Avenue now expected to reach 1,397 feet.

I don't have the height of the lightening rod but the filing done by SOM & PA with FAA to construct 1 WTC was for an overall height AGL of 1806 ft, which need to be surveyed once constructed to verify actual height. I have converted PDF to JPEG and posted all seven pages of FAA public notice on flicker but here is first page with the synopsis and the number you want to see.

I just logged into the work server from home to look for the lightening rod details, certainly have not focused on it before. The original SOM drawing from 2011, which might have been updated by a bulletin, shows an 8 ft tall 2 inch thick stainless steel rod starting at elevation 2095 ft 2 inches so that is 2103' 2" to the tip. then subtract out a lobby elevation of 310' and it appears the tip of lightening rod would be at 1793' 2" if it all works out the same as this Jan 2011 SOM drawing. We will have to wait and see.

You know what? Why don't they just add a few floors in the tower or transform the communications rings into floors so that 1 WTC can also be the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere? It's already so bloody close to the title. No offense to Canada but the CN Tower is already getting surpassed by so many towers in Asia. This building should go for a record to show more resilience. If being the tallest building in America is too questionable, make it the tallest structure in this part of the world. The old WTC held that title a little bit longer and so did the ESB. I don't care that much about roof height since 9 of 10 says I won't even go to the very top of this tower How tall the overall structure reaches to the sky is what really matters, either by roof height or a spire/antenna.

Can't tell ya on the exterior cladding dates, but I can tell you that most likely it will be on the edge of topping out by mid-May. We can't really say now because no one can predict the weather, but the schedule was pushed from April to May because of wind issues.

Exactly. When the Trade Center is complete, I'm going to work in the tower and I've been asked by friends(because I don't know which company I'll be working in)why I want to work there? Why shouldn't I work in taller buildings? I tell them because I want to work in the WORLD TRADE CENTER!!!

You aren't the only one. I have wanted to work at the World Trade Center since I was 4 when it was still the Twin Towers, and I will still want to work in the new one. As soon as I graduate college with a master's degree in Architecture and I have the resources to open my own firm I will try to lease in one of the new World Trade Center towers, but only time will tell.

I said the same thing when I accepted a job at Marsh and McLennan. Lot of good that did me. I don't think I could work that high up ever again. Not after 9/11.

I disagree, it is not tasteless. I think it is a great contrast of this new modern building compared to the sort of gothic style cemetery. Also, i think when its done it will be even better because the spire will sort of be similar to that style so it would be like a new twist on something very old. And it's sort of showing that the wtc is a memorial for those who died. I hope someone takes this same picture when it's completely done, it will probably be one of my favorites.

The amount of impatience and skepticism being displayed for these brave iron workers who are risking their lives everyday - facing extremely high winds, heat, cold, etc. etc. is just really insensitive and naive. Steel construction has been blazing lately, and it's almost topped-out. The gears that slowed this tower's progress were largely political and financial - decisions that were NOT made by the workers but by the rich power brokers behind this project. Also, weather has played an enormous role in delaying the project along with a steel company that pretty much went out of business...crane issues, etc.

So stop complaining about how the mesh isn't up yet and just be happy that this thing is actually rising in this economy. Almos every other city in the country would die just to have a skyscraper built right now, let alone a supertall.

Amen. People often forget that this building is not ordinary. It is standing in a place that has been through a lot. The fact that it's rising speaks for itself.

Love the pics, NewYorkSkyline117! Be sure and take some when it's topped out and post! Also, I second the opinions just shared, because we all want the tower finished, but we have to realize the risk that the ironworkers take everyday, so if it's windy, they can't put their lives at risk. The tower will be topped out soon, but caution always comes first!

Freedom Tower to overtake Empire State Building

http://msnbcmedia1.msn.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Video/120402/nn_11bw_frdomtower_120402.standard.jpg

The tower being erected at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan is currently nine feet from rising above the Empire State Building. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

Since the morning of 9/11, the empire state building has once again been the tallest building here in the new york skyline, just as it was from 1931 to 1972 when the trade center was built. that's about to change again. the new so-called freedom tower going up at ground zero in lower manhattan is now six feet from overtaking empire, if you don't include the antenna. that will happen four to six weeks from now when it's topped out in 2014 , it will be more than 300 feet taller than the great old landmark, antenna and all.
