Rep. Grimm Applauds PANYNJ’s Decision to Light One WTC in Red for Cardinal Dolan
PA steps up to honor a hometown hero, after Empire State Building denies the request
NEW YORK, NY – Today, Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R,C-S.I./Brooklyn) applauded the decision of the Port Authority’s Executive Director Patrick Foye to light One World Trade Center in red to honor the elevation of Archbishop Dolan to cardinal. After Rep. Grimm’s request to light up the Empire State Building - which is traditionally lit to honor various causes and individuals - was denied yesterday by the building’s Lighting Partner Committee, the congressman made a similar request to the Port Authority. The Port Authority has agreed to light One World Trade Center – at no cost to the agency - beginning tonight, February 24th, for one week.
“Giving up is not in my DNA. Where there is a will there is a way, and One WTC is even more appropriate as a symbol of hope, courage and the bright future of New York, all of which Cardinal Dolan exemplifies,” said Grimm. “I applaud the Port Authority’s decision to step up and honor our hometown hero by lighting One Word Trade Center in cardinal red. This illumination will not just serve as a celebration of Cardinal Dolan, but of all our city’s heroes. It is an opportunity for all of us to honor the lives and bravery of those we lost, and to show our pride for a local leader who has given so much to the people of New York with his faith and charity.”
Upon its completion, One World Trade Center will become the tallest building in New York City, standing at 1,776 feet. It will have a public observation deck on the 100th and 101st floors for all to enjoy the view of city. The building’s construction has been moving at a pace of about a floor a week, and the steel construction has been completed to the 92nd floor as of today.

Yes,
It is around 3.5 degrees cooler at 1000 ft elevation than at ground level. It is something called the lapse rate by weather folks. So you can get ice formation on tops of supper talls when it is 35f at street level

Looks like 1WTC doing things that the ESB doesn't want to. Many people have asked if 1WTC will be lit like the ESB. I think the article semi-clearly answers the question.

When its finished, 1wtc will probably be lit in regular lighting on all the main floors, and the top part including the spire might be lit in a special ways to show it off, or to mark certain holidays, maybe in tandem with the ESB lighting. Certainly that spire is going to be a major beacon

3,087' to the top of the visible beam you see? The light beam on top of the luxor in Vegas its a solid beam for several miles above the hotel. That has been the brightest most visible light for 19 years. 1 WTC 93rd floor or 1,216' splices included.

I hope this doesn't come off to many of you skyscraper experts as a dumb question, and I am sure it has been asked before, but hopefully you can enlighten a novice such as myself..:) Just curious, exactly what type of structure is 1wtc? I know the old twin towers were tubular, and their strength came from the outside columns which acted as bracers, like a stick of celery. The old towers got most of their strength from the outside columns, and did not have many interior columns so as to free up more office space..1WTC looks to have an-all glass facade. Does it have a rigid steel skeleton as well on the exterior? I know it has strong interior concrete reinforced columns and beams? I heard somewhere that 1wtc's exterior facade is merely superficial, that it gets its strength from the interior, unlike in the old twin towers. Is this more akin to older skyscrapers like the ESB? Thanks.

So am I correct in interpreting what you're saying as the top of the light will extend 3087' above the ground? If elevation is included in that figure (as alluded to by NewYorkSkyline117 then surely every building in Denver, let alone other mountainous regions of the Earth will be higher?
Plus, like was mentioned previously, the beam from the Luxor in Las Vegas reaches far higher into the sky.

One World Trade Center uses a tube structure like the Twin Towers before it. How this works is there is a central core made of steel which contains the elevators and the stairs which is then bounded to the outer walls made out of steel by the floors, and floor trusses. This makes a building that is very resilient and won't really sway easily in the wind, and no the building get's it's strength from all it's major components, but the core and the fireproofing is much stronger than the one in the Twin Towers.
No. Old skyscrapers like the Empire State Building used a different technique in which there were columns at roughly every 30 feet square. This was a problem to many architects and engineers because if there is space you wanted to rent there are columns blocking the way. Leslie Robertson AKA the man that engineered the Twin Towers came up with the tube concept during the construction of the World Trade Center. Today his concept is used in skyscrapers throughout the world.
This video should explain it.

Thanks Roadcruiser, very informative. So basically 1wtc is built exactly like the twin towers were, with tube structure, perimeter columns, and hat trusses? Only it is being built much stronger than the twins?

Yes, but I don't think a hat truss is being used.

So I guess that means the structure will be rigid enough already that it won't need a hat truss to keep it from swaying too much in strong winds.

I thought that from the latest renders by NYguy, the beam was horizontal.
It will be capable of the horizontal light shows as well as vertical. It won't simply be a "lighting" as is currently done with the ESB spire. BTW, the original WTC had a horizontal light show as well in the early 90's.

If the perimeter steel were, hypothetically, removed, would the structural element of the core be capable of supporting the building by itself? I thought I read that somewhere, but I don't know if that's true.

First off, unlike the twins, the perimeter structure deals with the wind load while the core takes the vast majority of the gravity load.
This building can witstand the loss of as much as 2 columns on each side, the perimeter structure is designed to transfer the gravity load to alternate columns.

If you checked the video I showed you a page ago the core and the perimeter columns both are responsible for giving the building strength. Half of the weight of a skyscraper comes from the perimeter columns which hold the building up while the other half or the core of the skyscraper keeps the building down. This is how a skyscraper works. But to put the whole thing together floor trusses are used to put the thing together. That is how they are building all skyscrapers these days.

Epic. By the time most of the under constructions and proposed buildings are done with some added in between in Manhattan and around in NJ and the outer boroughs, we'll be seeing a very continuous skyline that will just be the next stage of arguably one of the largest collections of skyscrapers on the face of the earth.( And damn, that sentence was as long as this)

I don't think it would happen in Manhattan much anymore. The next wave of skyscraper development would probably be in Brooklyn. 10 or 20 years from now Brooklyn would have a tall enough skyline to compete with Manhattan.
