so according to that article, the observatory and windows on the world changed places, also the offices will rise to the 90th floor not the 88th, I guess that means that the last two will have super high ceilings for some kind of executive area or something.

I seem to remember that levels 89 & 90 were supposed to be for TV broadcast equipment but now that the TV stations will not be broadcasting from there they probably decided to use them for offices.

But due to the photos displaying the building so conspicuously I just had to... I will search every comment next time. Forgive me...:yuck:

Thanks for typing out the article NYGuy, I almost didn't notice the typos. (Many many hours spent in chat rooms I just read right past them.)

Let's see, there has been no official change of the designation of the 89th and 90th floors, they are still broadcast floors unless someone want's 20 foot ceilings. (Maybe some rich guy would like to lease them, they would make a great apartment with some GREAT views !)( Actually, even though the MTVA deal fell through they will still have broadcast equipment on those floors, just not as much.)

The ceiling heights of the floors above the sky lobby are no different than those below, all the office floors have a 13' 4" slab to slab hight.

The OB deck and the restaurant are reversed, the Restaurant is on the 100, 101st floors, the OB is 102.

World Trade Center Towers Light Up for the Holidays
Workers at One World Trade Center and Tower 4 put up brightly colored lights for the holiday season.

MANHATTAN — One World Trade Center is getting in the holiday spirit this year, with brightly colored lights that are visible from blocks around.

The red, green, yellow, blue and pink lights went up recently along the eastern face of the steel and concrete skyscraper, illuminating it like a giant 50-story Christmas tree.

"It’s a good will thing, to cheer up the job site for the holiday season," said Peter Amabile Jr., senior vice president of Five Star Electric, the tower’s electrical contractor.

The Five Star team created the display by swapping out the clear bulbs that normally light the open concrete floors and replacing them with tinted ones. Amabile said he picked a broad array of colors, rather than just red and green, to make the exhibit "universal."

The lights are on 24 hours a day to help workers in the tower see what they’re doing, but the colors are only visible from street level at night.

The colored bulbs are more expensive than regular ones, but Amabile said the cost was worthwhile.

Despite the cold, windy weather, many passersby stopped to admire the lights on a recent evening and several tourists took pictures.

"It looks beautiful," said Raziq Ali, 47, a Bronx resident, as he walked past the World Trade Center site.

"I think it’s cool," agreed Dave Dalpe, 33, a Jersey City resident who was gazing up at the lights. "It looks pretty as you’re walking down Vesey Street."

Just to the south, a much smaller display is visible on Tower 4, another office tower that is rising at the site. Workers draped several strings of multicolored Christmas lights over the base of the two tower cranes, adding a merry touch to developer Larry Silverstein’s construction.

Amabile expects to keep the bolder lights at One World Trade Center up through early January, so they can continue spreading holiday cheer during the cold weather.

"It’s a happy thing," he said.

CEO offices etc. and top firms might want higher ceilings... Maybe Bill Gates or Carlos Slim will make it their new place of residence

since the 89th and 90th floors are so large why don't they just add another floor or two and lower their ceiling heights, since it's closer to the top it couldn't throw the design that much off could it?

I think it's OK for someone to ask a question every now and then. If you don't have all day to read through pages of comments, it's hard to find the information you're looking for. If you don't want to read or answer someone's question for them, just skip to the next one... pretty simple. (And if you disagree with me you could say so, or you could just skip it.)

With this technology, all the crane's support is always visible, unlike a kangaroo crane where the crane's tower grows with the building.

And what a great view of it from this cam.

I think it was to make sure the glass was aligned perfectly. And the glass it amazing! 2nd floor!

Actually, I believe, it is so large equipment can be brought into that floor for HVAC systems and such. Once those systems on the 20th floor are complete, the rest of the glass should go up.

But yes you are correct it is so that the glass is aligned correctly.

Dec 9, 2010, 1:22 AM
Obey, you are correct, if you were not I would have posted with a correction. The whole HVAC thing is silly. The 20th floor is an office floor, nothing that can't fit on the construction elevators is going in there.

While 2 floors down they have to get a few Cat powered emergency generators inside the mechanical floors. That's something they need leave outs for.

Yes, I checked the prints.:D

^^ Couldn't they have just use the elevators on the side, or use a crane to drop it into that lattice tower?

Now that they are getting into the regluar pattern if installing the glass, it looks as if they will get about a floor per week installed, which the PA suggested.

Bright lights and big hearts fill World Trade Center workers' holiday gift to city

http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2010/12/09/alg_electricians.jpg

Electricians took it upon themselves to use cellophane-wrapped light bulbs to decorate Freedom Tower (b.), which is under construction, in holiday colors.

Michael Daly
December 9th 2010

Joe Russo was in his Staten Island home two weekends ago when he made a pronouncement that would result in the most beautiful sight in the city.

"I don't think I'm going to put up the tree this year," the 49-year-old electrician would recall saying. "I got a better idea."

"What's that?" asked his wife, Kathleen Russo.

"I'm going to light up the whole tower and see what it looks like," Joe Russo said.

He was speaking of the Freedom Tower, where he is a journeyman with Local 3, part of the Five Star Electric team. He arrived there the following Monday with various hues of cellophane purchased at a Michael's crafts store.

"Red, green, yellow, purple, whatever I could grab," he recalled.

Russo broached his idea to Gary Timm, the 59-year-old light and power foreman.

"Give it a shot," Timm said. "See what it looks like."

Russo needed only two minutes to wrap cellophane around a 250-watt construction light and secure it with cellophane tape. He did the south and east sides of three floors in an hour.

The idea had yet to be approved by Frank Leonard, the 45-year-old general foreman. He saw the lights the next morning before Russo arrived for work.

"Who did that?" Leonard asked.

"Why do you want to know?" Timm replied.

Leonard made his judgment known.

"Outstanding."

Leonard had been talking with other electricians about doing something special for the holidays. Nobody had to tell any of them they are laboring at a sacred place.

"Everybody really takes it to heart what we're doing here," Leonard later noted. "It's a special place. You think about who was here and what happened."

Leonard, Timm and Russo were also following an impulse that goes back at least to 1931, when construction workers put up the first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

"It's in the genes," Russo said.

Russo started as an apprentice at the World Trade Center in 1981. He now ended the day with seven more floors of multicolored Christmas lights. These were topped by three floors of blue signifying Chanukah. Two above those were lit a symbolic yellow.

"Candles," Leonard said.

The overall effect was all the more wonderful for looking like exactly what it was: something workers with rough hands and gentle hearts had taken it upon themselves to do.

"No one directed us to do it," Leonard said. "It definitely came from within.

"Just bring a smile to people's faces, you know what I mean?"

The smile was joined by a welling in the eyes of retired Firefighter Lee Ielpi, who lost his firefighter son on 9/11 and is now the guiding force behind the Tribute WTC Visitor Center.

"Powerful," he said as he gazed across The Pit at the lights of purest holiday spirit. "Beautiful. It comes from the heart."

On Saturday night, Russo took his wife to the site to show her the lights. She celebrates her birthday on Christmas Day.

"That's for your birthday," he said.

On Tuesday night, Russo came home from work to discover she had gone ahead and put up the tree.

"The tree was beautiful," he said yesterday.

Looked pretty serious for a second, but all seems fine now... Those 250 watt bulbs get hot, maybe it was a brief flare from some of that holiday cellophane getting to close to a bulb??? or just some steam from concrete pouring??? It is frigid today.

Freedom Tower Transformed Into A Christmas Tree
Worker Decides To Bring Holiday Cheer To Solemn Place

December 9, 2010

Construction workers rebuilding the World Trade Center site have given a holiday gift to us all.

He’s electrician from Staten Island who said he’s just a “regular Joe” who wanted to bring some cheer to the people.

So on his own time – and with his own money — Joe Russo started decorating One World Trade — better known as the Freedom Tower.

“The building was just white lights. I wanted to make it look like a Christmas Tree. Put some cellophane around it,” Russo told CBS 2’s Magee Hickey.

“He asked if it was okay and I said sure, go with it. And we did. First we had to run it by the big guy, the foreman that is over me. And he said outstanding. Away we went,” electric foreman Gary Timm added.

So, 250 lights on 20 floors now are covered with red, green, yellow and blue cellophane and scotch tape, costing $100 from Russo’s own pocket. It took him 10 extra hours working in frigid temperatures. It was a labor of love appreciated by all those who work here.

“It gives you a lot of pride, a lot of pride to be working where we are and doing what we’re doing here, something special,” foreman Frank Leonard said.

And to one retired firefighter who lost his firefighter son on 9/11, the Christmas lights on the Freedom Tower are one more reminder that his son, along with thousands of others, is not forgotten.

“Many of whom were here on 9/11. This is their way of saying we remember, sending a special message to everybody with beautiful colors. It brings a tear to my eye. I say thank you to you and your crew,” Lee Ielpi said.

Very, very, very early interior shot of the lobby, with parts of the concourse visible. Missing: escalators, handrails and parts of the core.

I like how they built basically a moat to separate the tourists from everyone else.

I'll e-mail you a section view of the window washing track this weekend, and maybe that other thing I was going to look into.

All those brackets on the 20th floor spandrel beams are to support the monorail for the base window washing scafold.

The pace of construction on 1WTC seems to have slowed slightly. Normally they were doing 2 floors in exactly 2 weeks, starting on a Monday and ending at the end of the following Saturday workday. By this pace, they should have finished the last 2 floors by the end of last Saturday, yet they were still installing the floor beams and the metal decking until about Thursday of this week. Also, now that they've finally started on the next two floors (only this morning), they're only installing the perimeter columns instead of the core columns. When they do this, it usually means the pouring of the concrete in the core is slowing them down... which wouldn't be surprising, considering that we're now entering winter, which I'm sure slows things down with the concrete due to the temp and only being able to pour on warms days, or having to install those huge warmers around the entire core.

Hey everybody i just made som calculation on One world trade center. Right now there are working on the 51st and 52 floors right. so lets see each office floor is 13.4 feet, so lets see 13.4x 32=428 feet, now the base is 187 feet just about right, so 187+ 428=615.8 feet.

now we are all wondering how many feet and floors left for one wtc to topple 7 wtc right, well 7 wtc is 741 feet tall. so 741-615.8= 125.2 feet. so in feet wise 1 wtc will be as tall as 7 wtc in 125.2 feet. now in floor equation 125.2 divided 13.4=9.3 so let round that off to 10 floors. so in 10 floors it will topple 7 wtc. and i predict this will happen some time around mid april.

what do you all think.

It's a pretty obvious milestone. Aside from being the closest tall structure to 1WTC, surpassing it will make 1WTC the tallest building of the new WTC.

Someone over at SSC had their thinking cap on. A poster named Swiddle had a thought as to why the 20th floor has every other window installed.

It is his theory that it is to facilitate the lifting devices for the future installation of the base cladding. It makes sense:

There are no actual floors near the outer structure of the base from which workers or machines could safely install the panels. So in the future (sometime in early 2012 according to some posters on here) when the base cladding is installed, they will stage from the 20th floor and raise the panels from lifts protruding from the spaces in the cladding on the 20th floor. Then workers suspended on staging platforms (also supported from the openings on the 20th floor) could work in tandem with climbers on the steel, to install each prismatic panel.

Just a theory.

now we are all wondering how many feet and floors left for one wtc to topple 7 wtc right, well 7 wtc is 741 feet tall. so 741-615.8= 125.2 feet. so in feet wise 1 wtc will be as tall as 7 wtc in 125.2 feet. now in floor equation 125.2 divided 13.4=9.3 so let round that off to 10 floors. so in 10 floors it will topple 7 wtc. and i predict this will happen some time around mid april.

what do you all think.

You need a small adjustment. Everybody keeps quoting the office floors as 13.4 feet. That's not right. They're 13 feet 4 inches.
