Under typical NY zoning (which the site is not), you wouldn't even be getting the 10 msf of office space built on those "blocks". They are only reserving the "footprint" area for the memorial, not even half of the WTC site.

I visited the 10th floor of 7WTC today which acts as a sales office for the new WTC and as the office for associates of the architects of the WTC. I had a close up view of the construction, unfortunately my camera died after taking some spectacular shots from the 52nd floor of 7 WTC. From what I saw the entire area around the Freedom Tower from West Street, to the memorial, to the temporary transit hub are up to street level. The Freedom Tower site is crawling with workers. Forms are starting to rise to encase the steel columns with concrete. The north core is severely lagging and I was told the south core is up to 300 feet, although that can't be accurate (maybe with the crane?). The perimeter columns below street level have been encased in a concrete wall. Also of note I was told that construction is progressing at 2 and 3 although right now only the bases will be built as financing in the current market cannot be obtained for the towers as well. The bases are being built to support towers and Silverstein is hoping to get financing based on projections of a rosier market when these towers are completed but as of right now its just not there and this'll become a major issue once 2 and 3 reach street level. It is imperative that they reach street level though since the PATH Station cannot function otherwise. Also 99 Church is indefinitely on hold since again there is no financing.

It's not ideal information to hear, but it's raw reality that we have to accept for now. I'm confident though that the WTC will be built as shown. How long it takes is yet to be seen, but it will happen. These current times aren't forever. My stance on the WTC also carries over to 99 Church Street.

I don't think 300 ft is accurate, maybe they were counting from the foundation?

Also good news. I didn't know work had begun on T2's foundation. I don't think either 2 or 3 will reach ground level before next year (could be wrong though), so we'll worry about financing when it's a clear problem.
BTW, did you get any photos?

An interesting article from the NY times
Add one more ear-popping superlative to the structural distinctions at 1 World Trade Center. On its opening in 2013, it will have the five fastest elevators in the western hemisphere, according to the company that is building them. The express cars serving the restaurant and observatory will be capable of traveling at up to 2,000 feet a minute, meaning passengers can get to the top of the city’s tallest building in less than a minute.

POSTED MARCH 2, 2009
Progress can be seen all around the World Trade Center site these days. But one of the most dramatic strands in that complex web of development is 60 feet below street level and hidden from view. It is the shopping mall and shortcut known as the “East-West Connector.”
When the Port Authority completes it, the retail-lined concourse will connect the new PATH station, designed by Santiago Calatrava, with the World Financial Center in Battery Park City.
Atop the tunnel, other workers are constructing a sheet metal roof that will be the base of an extended Fulton Street.
The columns on the north side of the concourse will frame storefronts for some of the half-million square feet of retail space in the transportation hub and office building lobbies—about the same amount of retail the Trade Center housed.
The concourse, now half finished, is expected to open along with the PATH station in early 2014, if the Port Authority can stay on its latest schedule.

It's hard to grasp that every piece of steel or concrete they put in there is going to be there when it's finished. It's like a giant puzzle, only it's a puzzle that requires another puzzle before you can start the real puzzle.

That's been discussed at length here. Reportedly work will commence faster on that end when the Port Authority suspends weekend service on the PATH trains that run underneath the tower this summer. The PA expects the north core to be rising above ground at that time.

With so many projects slowing down, we'll need something to watch. This one won't disappoint.

I'm excited about the Fulton Street element of construction (as well as Greenwich). It's just another step in taking the "ground zero" out of ground zero and giving the site back to Manhattan.

PORT AUTHORITY STUDY SHOWS SIGNIFICANT JOB CREATION, ECONOMIC ACTIVITY GENERATED BY WTC REBUILDING
March 05, 2009
At a time of national economic uncertainty, the public rebuilding of the World Trade Center will result in tens of thousands of good-paying jobs and a significant boost in regional economic activity, according to a Port Authority economic stimulus study released today.
Presented at today's Board of Commissioner's meeting, the Port Authority study showed that public investments in World Trade Center projects, including One World Trade Center, the Freedom Tower; the World Trade Center Transportation Hub; the National September 11 Memorial & Museum; World Trade Center retail and other related infrastructure will result in the creation of 26,538 direct jobs, including on-site construction, architecture and engineering, and program and construction management. Including indirect jobs, such as those generated by industries that supply services, materials and machinery to the rebuilding effort, the jobs number grows to 62,336.
The World Trade Center projects also are expected to generate $3.7 billion in direct and indirect wages and total economic activity of $14.5 billion.
Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward said, "What sometimes gets lost is that the public investment at the World Trade Center site is among the largest economic engines in the region. It is more than just steel, bricks and mortar. It's a real stimulus to the local economy."
During today's Board meeting, Executive Director Ward also provided a status report on the construction of One World Trade Center. The highlights include:
-The core of the building is 105 feet above street level - the equivalent of a nine story building.
-93 percent of the major construction trade contracts have been awarded.
-95 percent of the 48,000 tons of structural steel has been purchased, and 90 percent of it is rolled. 1,888 tons of structural steel has been erected, 1,175 tons has been fully fabricated, and 2,200 tons is being fabricated.
-35,106 cubic yards, or 16.3 percent of the total concrete in the building, has been poured.
-2,720 out of 11,331 total curtain wall panels (glass) are complete.

In a monthly report detailing progress at the site, Ward said that the core of One World Trade Center, known also as the Freedom Tower, had reached over a hundred feet above street level and that workers were preparing to raise a crane that will allow the building’s steel and cement to continue rising.
