Just a friendly reminder, don't forget NOVA's "Engineering Ground Zero" airs tonight Sept 7th at 9pm et on PBS(see preview above) looks like a cool show.
After watching the show, I was excited to hear that PPG was making the cladding for the base. They're headquartered in Pittsburgh and it was always one of my favorite buildings growing up:
http://www.skyscraperpicture.com/pittsburgh12.jpg
So of course I was then a little saddened to hear that they couldn't figure out a way to make the prism glass work. The description in the skyscraperpage db still says
The base of the tower, which was originally to be clad in polished steel and titanium like 7 WTC, will now be covered in vertical bands of glass prisms.
Have there been any announcements or ideas put forward about what they are going to use now, or are they still undecided per the end of "Engineering Ground Zero"?

I liked the idea of the prism glass for the base (top 20 stories) to give it a more open feeling. I noticed that the concrete has openings to allow light in, but it seemed that the prism glass idea was too hard to execute. I wonder what alternative solution they will come up with! Seems like it will have to be a very heavy duty type of glass.
Have there been any announcements or ideas put forward about what they are going to use now, or are they still undecided per the end of "Engineering Ground Zero"?
They're going with glass fins. Something like the image below. Note: this a photo of another project, it is not a mockup of 1WTC. As of last report they're soliciting bids and doing testing.

And supposedly the fins will go in different directions. It will be interesting to see what they do here.

Looking at the Oxblue webcam this morning, it doesn't look like they have yet.
Link: Here (http://oxblue.com/pro/open/panynj/wtc)
However, it seems they have gone back to the Red, White and Blue night-lighting effect for 9/11, as they had for July 4th.

As for Tower one reaching over 1000 feet by the tenth anniversary,I'm doubtful. We shouldn't anticipate it if they haven't even laid down the decking yet.

They were originally on the site of what is now the Goldman Sachs tower, so they had to be moved to a suitable location. The Freedom Tower will have a more permanent light show when it is completed.

Now that the WTC Memorial is almost complete why don't they move the lights there so it would meet the alignment of the original Twin Towers, and be the same in dimensions too.

I seriously doubt there is any room at the memorial to put them. Don't forget the space is full of trees... and 2 acres of waterfall/fountain.
Not to mention they will need all the space they can get for the opening this weekend.

WTC's Twitter says they won't be doing any construction on 9/11. Didn't say about how long before or how long afterwards though. Seen workers putting up window panels on the webcams today. I'm starting to assume they'll wait until the day after 9/11 to start putting up beams.

After all that work and effort to reach 1,000 ft by 9/11, and to stop so close...
Just a thought... All along they wanted to be above 1000 feet by 9/11/11. When the poor weather conditions over the last year made that goal impossible (and yet they were so close), they may have held back the last couple of days so they could, on Sunday, have a ceremonial lifting of the column that surpasses 1000 feet.
Just a thought

During some TV liveshots of the site this morning, there was a lot of activity in the background, so who knows, they might lift the symbolic beam up before 9/11! Still time now that the crappy weather has broken

"An eagle-eyed contributor at the Skyscraper Page noted that this could actually push the tower to 1,787 feet" Cool! And, "First, the height of the tower is being measured from the midway point of the ground floor, not one side or the other."... "That means the new height would only be 1,784 feet. Second, and more importantly, the lightning rod has not even been designed yet. It could be two feet tall or eleven feet, one rod or a dozen."
Its cool that our forum initiated this re-evaluation!.

Tower one will be a bit taller
Lightning Strikes 1 World Trade Center! Making Room for Rods, Tower Will Be Taller Than 1,776 Feet
By Matt Chaban 12:37pm
Whether poetic, patriotic or pathetic, Daniel Liebeskind’s plan to render the height of 1 World Trade Center at 1,776 feet—a nod to our nation’s declaration of independence—was one of the most remarked upon pieces of his plan for the project. In fact, after Skidmore Owings & Merrill took over the design from Mr. Liebeskind, who is now merely the master planner, about the only element of his design that remained at 1 World Trade was that the top of the tower would reach 1,362, the same as the original towers, and it would have a spire climbing further to that symbolic height of 1,776 feet.
It turns out the tower will be even taller, and we have Mother Nature to thank for that.
The World Trade Center is Now Totally Above Ground >>
A diagram for the 400-foot aerial appendage appeared in Architectural Record last week, and it showed an eight-foot protrusion atop the antenna. According to a source working at the site, it is a lightning rod. “There is a sense a lighting strike could be huge, so we have to protect against that,” this person said. Indeed, lightning has been an issue for decades at the Empire State Building.
Eight extra feet. (Architectural Record)
An eagle-eyed contributor at the Skyscraper Page noted that this could actually push the tower to 1,787 feet, if measured from the north side of the building. For the history buffs, that would be an equally or even more significant historical date: the creation of the U.S. Constitution. But our source said that would likely not be the case for two reasons.
First, the height of the tower is being measured from the midway point of the ground floor, not one side or the other. This was the point chosen by the designers because “we had to pick something,” the source said, not only to get the building built but for the purposes of having it measured by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which is the official arbiter of building heights worldwide. That means the new height would only be 1,784 feet. Second, and more importantly, the lightning rod has not even been designed yet. It could be two feet tall or eleven feet, one rod or a dozen.
How Hurricane Irene Helped the 9/11 Memorial Open On Time >>
Still, according to our source, even from a bird’s eye view, the lightning rod (or rods) would be all but imperceptible, lost in the scale of the spire and likely obscured by the flashing of an FAA-mandated warning light. “The sense is those things are so fine, you don’t even perceive them,” the source said.
As for that FAA beacon, it will be perched at the very top of the antenna proper—at a height of 1,776 feet. Call it the Beacon of Independence

Now that the WTC Memorial is almost complete why don't they move the lights there so it would meet the alignment of the original Twin Towers, and be the same in dimensions too.
i posted the same on the Memorial thread.... and yes, i think it would be great to install the lights on the memorials themselves...

Isn't it a bit early to list the height as 1,787, when the lightning rod hasn't even been designed yet? And does a lightning rod count towards height, anyway?

I agree - someone was a little quick with the trigger to change the title of this thread. While I am all for the height of the building being raised (I would even support 1WTC reclaiming the world's tallest title), changing the height in the title of this thread is dumb for many reasons:
1. The rod hasn't even been designed yet, the height could change.
2. The rod may or may not be recognized by the CTBUH.
3. The symbolic height of this tower was, is, and will ALWAYS be 1,776' in the minds of people around the world. The building will market itself as 1,776' in all media, brochure and publications. People around the world will recognize this tower as 1,776'. No one cares about an 8' lightning rod that is too thin to see.
4. This tower is 1,776'. Period. This shouldn't even be debated, and changing the thread title was premature. Talk about jumping the gun.
*Edit: And as for the CTBUH, I have a feeling they will go with 1,776' because this is the *official* and *symbolic* height of the tower that EVERYONE is using, from the developers to the general public.

Pinnacle height is a different height altogether when determining official heights.

I dont get it. Why is it so "cool" or "important" that it hits 1000 ft on sept 11? why not 1100 ft or 950 ft?
If you're on a skyscraper forum, you should know that 1,000 ft is the "magical" number that separates skyscrapers from "ordinary" skyscrapers in the minds of many. Having the floors of this tower reach that number is symbolic for various reasons.

Can someone tell me what the topmost floors on 1WTC will be used for? It looks like there's so much unoccupied space up there... like 30 floors worth.

Hi all.
Hi Matt.
The CTBUH has strict guidelines that they follow. The question is whether the rod is a permanent part of the structure or not. STR has the opinion it is permanent but if it a lightning rod I'm not sure there are any examples where the council considered it permanent. I don't know for sure on that one. The spire drawing in question shows the rod as 8 feet high.
The other thing is the lowest entrance (on the North side) is 3 feet lower (than the average ground level height the plans use) and if it fits the criteria (and it looks likely) for the council to start their measurements there then the height is 1779 not 1776. This happens regularly. As the planners said "they had to pick a number" (as 0.00 elevation for the plans) then, when the council looks at it they use "the lowest, significant, open air, pedestrian entrance".
1 - The rod is considered permanent - Both the height to arch. top and the height to tip measures will be the same at 1787 feet.
2 - The rod isn't considered permanent - The height to arch. top will be 1779 feet and the height to tip will be 1787 feet.
IMO the 1776 wasn't in the picture from the start, knowing how the planners picked their 0.00 starting elevation.
Ray.
