I totally agree! To me, the tapered corners are reflective of the rest of the tower above and go well with the whole idea of symbolism throughout the plaza: namely remembrance and reflection on those who were lost.
Although I do like the similar chords the new design shares with the old towers, albeit a much more modern look this time around.

Nah. The tapering corners would make One World Trade Center look like a giant tower sitting on a Chinese Food takeout box. That doesn't look good in my opinion.

For all of you, stop complaining. I mean, what's more important? Our safety, or some design. Give the architects a break, they're already working hard enough to get this tower up..
Another gem from you.
The entire podium is bogus. If someone really wants to attack the new World Trade Center with a car bomb, why not target any one of the other towers that doesn't have a giant ugly concrete base? Or attack the fantastic new towers that will be at Hudson Yards? If that area is built as proposed, it will become a new focal point of the city.
I'm really losing interest in the WTC redevelopment as time goes on, especially when we are getting some fantastic architecture without the bullshit in Midtown.

That is because the World Trade Center is a symbol of economic globalization and capitalism. You don't think that the symbols that represent the American economy would never be targeted? This is the exact ignorant mentality that resulted in the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Once again, stop thinking about the base. There isn't going to be an attack, and if so, they won't judge the building's by their bases...plus the Hudson Yards towers aren't even being built

The plus side of removing the chamfered corners is that the tower should appear less bottom heavy. Looking at some of those recent aerials the tower looks ever so slightly awkward as it appears to get smaller at the base of the tower, which may be alleviated by the new base. As for complaints it will look like seven's base, it should look nothing like it, this is sheathed in glass, not stainless steel grating.

:koko: Did you even read the post? I said if they were to attack the WTC again, any person with two firing neurons would be able to realize that it'd be more effective to attack the towers without the ugly "bombproof" base.
Once again, stop thinking about the base. There isn't going to be an attack, and if so, they won't judge the building's by their bases...plus the Hudson Yards towers aren't even being built
Again? You just rambled on about the need to be safe in your previous post, and now you are saying it won't be attacked. So why is the base there? Paranoia, that is why.
And those towers are being built. Are you even trying?

And what would you say if the terrorists manage to hijack another airplane and crash it into One World Trade Center. What would you say then? In fact recently a newspaper article says Al Qaeda still has the capability to fly small planes like the Cessna and fly them loaded with bombs into buildings like One World Trade Center so what are you going to say now? Yes this would still do significant damage to buildings like One World Trade Center. Sure it might not collapse, but still the damage and the deaths would be maddening.

I am just glad they finally arrived at a solution for covering the base, and based on the renderings, I think it will come out quite nice. It looks like it will have a cool iredescant quality. Actually, I think once the tower is actually finished, people will really come to like it. It will grow on people when they see the finished building. As to the issue of the tower's security, Al Qaeda is seriously fragmented and does not have even close the capabilities they had a decade ago. Furthermore, in light of what happened on 9/11, if there was so much as a whisper of a plane being hijacked and on its way toward New York or any other major city, it would promptly be shot down. There is no way that will ever happen again. Sure, there's always a risk of a bomb threat from below, but the airplane threat is dead in the water based on the 9/11 tragedy. I am glad to see 1 WTC rising and look forward to its completion. And if that bothers Al Qaeda or any other would-be terrorists, too bad.

in my personal opinion, the base looks better tapered, but for the tower as a whole, looks more balanced with a straight base.

Yeah, but I think the US wasn't able to shoot down the plane in Washington because they were doing a terrorism drill of the very same type, around 9:00 AM and they were caught off guard.
I'm not sure I ever liked the tapered base, because it took away the depth of the tower at the bottom. Although I admit the new design is very straight-lined, very Asian looking. It brings back some of the flair of the orginal towers, but I think will also take the overall design in a totally different direction. I'm sure it will be nice when it's finished, regardless.

Planes seriously fly right over Lower Manhattan every day. When I came back from Africa to land in NYC, we flew right over the WTC.
All it takes is someone to hijack the cockpit, a pilot to be in on something, or someone cut the radio controls to the plane off and they can run it into a tower that quick. You can't scramble some F-16 fighter jets in just a little over 3 minutes. If some mentally ill individual or (individuals) wanted to something so terrible again, they could do it eventually if they wanted. Some sick people in this world, but you have to think to yourself.. You can have the "best security in the world" or the "strongest tower ever built" and someone could still change that title real quick.

And that is precisely why pilots should be trained in the use of, and then be allowed (perhaps even required) to carry firearms in the cockpit. Had that been the case ten years ago, it is very likely that the hijacking would have completely failed, if it would've even happened at all. The old World Trade Center twin towers likely would still be standing today.

100% agree with you, sir.
Instead of having to bring a plane down,
That would save not only the innocent 120-140 people on board an airplane (and possibly 20-40,000 people in a building), but the prices of the gas to fire up the fighters jets, and the destruction costs to properties from the plane falling. Just use the firearm and get it over with in a second. LOL!

I don't live in a state of perpetual fear, so I don't give it much thought.
You realize I'm talking about a different kind of attack, right? The reason the base is an unoccupied pedestal is because the NYPD demanded that the design be changed in case someone parked a carbomb next to it. So, we have this big pedestal for Tower 1, but 2, 3, and 4 all have "normal" bases. If someone was going to attack the new WTC using a carbomb like the NYPD is/was so concerned about, they aren't going to attack the hard target (Tower 1). They'll go for the easier targets across the street.
All I'm getting at is that the logic behind the base is flawed, but we are stuck with it nonetheless. We don't have to live in fear, guys.

There is an airplane simulator on Google Earth, and there are plenty of flight simulators. So real you can actually learn how to operate a plane from playing Flightgear.

Nov 19, 2011, 4:32 AM
The simulator on Google Earth is just for fun. A real plane is MUCH, MUCH more complicated to fly, and I can't put enough emphasis on the MUCH! All you do is use the arrow keys and space bar to fly the plane. BTW the Google Earth product didn't go public on a continous basis until 2005.

Having now looked at the new base renderings a couple pages back, I've gotta say I'm conflicted about it.
On the one hand, I never really liked the chamfered corners, so this cubic design appeals to me. The glass and steel look awesome, IMO. I love the greater verticality of it.
I am a little disappointed though, that the steel structure of the base will now not be expressed externally at all, as on the corners of the rest of the tower, even though I never liked the design.
Because we all know what the underlying structure is, this new facade will likely always seem more like a draped curtain (albeit of glass and steel) than an actual wall to me. If this un-chamfered cube had been the design from the beginning, with steel structure to match, this would probably not be the case.

These people have, and will always be with us. Certainly we can improve security, yet hopefully not in a way that sacrifices liberty. Those that are willing to trade any amount of liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security. 9/11 was not a random act in a vacuum- it has a long history, and everyone ought to learn it. Perhaps if more Americans were willing to learn the motivations of terrorists, we could actually prevent terrorism, rather than accelerating the path towards tyranny. Spying on my computer and phone usage, creating massive databases to hold my most closely guarded secrets, starting new wars, and groping my mother doesn't make any of us safer.
I apologize for not buying into your paranoia and fear-mongering. There are and will always be millions of ways to injure and kill thousands of people for those that are willing to kill themselves for their cause.
BTW, you are referring to LGA's Expressway Visual RWY 31 approach. I have seen it many times and can't WAIT to see 1WTC from it again.
I really like the fins, I just hope they let as much light into the lobby as possible. This lobby needs a great deal, and I hope those thin "windows" provide that. I hope they don't bring airport security theater into One World Trade Center. I hope the steel supports will show through to the outside, I really loved that. I am sure it will be stunning, regardless.

Incorrect. Cockpit doors on airliners these days are build like freaking tanks and kept locked at all times, and pilots carry firearms in the cockpit. And even if, hypothetically, someone did manage to successfully take control of a commercial aircraft, you've still got 100+ passengers in the back who are very familiar with what happened ten years ago. You can bet after 9/11, someone's going to rush the clown hijacking the plane and break his neck. As for smaller private aircraft, flying a Cessna into a building like 1WTC would be roughly comparable to flying an insect into the grill of an oncoming semi. Guess who's going to win that fight?

Why do we have to wait until 2013 to see glass on the base? I thought the tower was opening in 2013? Also, when will the spire be placed On? Directly after the roof? If so, when>

Probably early 2013. The tower isn't done till April 2013, and the mast might be put up somewhere in mid to late 2012 after the topping off of the roof in early 2012.

If there is new steel rising then we are at floor 92.
WTC 1 is at the 88th floor. Vertical steel is up to the 89th.

That would probably take even longer. Maybe mid to late 2012. The building would be topped off by then.

Re: this question, most of the Korean is actually just English words written in the Korean alphabet (Korean script, unlike say Chinese, is just a phonetic alphabet, ex. the letter "m" looks like a little square). I could therefore decipher most of it except for a few Korean words I don't know. (I don't really speak Korean but I can read the alphabet since I lived there a couple of years.)

I like the sound of that. ^^
Ah, not necessarily related to construction (but it is about the building); does anybody know what this says? I know that it makes reference to the height of the base and the building itself... I'm not sure how accurate the whole diagram is (it looks a bit off).

Hmmm........Makes me wonder if perhaps DCM Erectors is paying into the guys benefit funds like they're supposed to. Perhaps they're a few weeks or maybe months behind on paying into their bennies. Not sure if the ironworkers still get their bennies paid by stamp book or not.........some locals still do it that way though so.........ya never know but i think i'm right.

Didn't they wait until the spire was finished on Trump in Chicago before they moved the thread? If that is what you are referring to, that is.
Lord knows they kept the Burj Dubai thread alive for ages after it was topped out.
And yeah, I read elsewhere that DCM Erectors (or someone) is behind 10 weeks on their payments to the workers. Props to the guys for still showing up to work. You can see some graffiti on the beams at Tower 4 in the latest batch of Woolhead pictures as well, but it isn't as easy to find.
Once again, thanks Carlos for all of the fantastic shots. I'll have to see if we can meet up and I can buy you a drink next time I'm in town.

The ironworkers are owed about 10 weeks in stamps...they've been behind for quite some time - that's why they don't work overtime on 1wtc anymore.

The ones that look like TV towers ARE TV towers believe it or not. Eagle Rock Reservation is right there. Midtown is farther to the left out of the picture.
